BETTENDORF -- Juanita Kay Wilke, of Bettendorf, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. A reception will be held at 2:45 p.m. at the church. Juanita Morton was born May 20, 1937, in Springview, Neb. She married William Wilke in 1956 in Denver. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Angela Hendricks, Phoenix; sons, William Wilke, Salt Lake City, and David Wilke, Atlanta; three grandchildren; her mother, Anita Morton, and a brother, Jerry Morton, both of Bassett, Neb.

Thomas Miller
DAVENPORT -- Services for Thomas J. Miller, of Davenport, will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Mr. Miller died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at his home in Davenport after a sudden illness. Thomas Joseph Miller was born March 11, 1939, to Herbert R. and Helen M. (Klouda) Miller in Davenport. He married Judy G. Robuck on May 23, 1964, in Davenport. He served his machinist apprenticeship at Alcoa and received Machinist Certificate. He was employed as a machinist at Alcoa until his retirement in 1987. Tom enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He especially cherished the time he spent with his three grandchildren. He was a proud grandpa. In addition to the church, he was a member of Knights of Columbus 532, Davenport, the Alcoa Retirees Club and Twenty-five Year Club. Memorials may be made to an education fund to be established for his grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Rodney Howell, Moline; a son, Aaron T. Miller, Davenport; grandchildren, Michael, Jeremy and Jessica Howell; a sister and brother-in-law, Audrae and Tim Wear, Davenport; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Herbert R. Miller Jr., and an uncle, Grover Miller. May they rest in peace.

Lelah Shubert
DeWITT, Iowa -- Services for Lelah Grimm Shubert, of DeWitt, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, DeWitt. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery , DeWitt. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. today at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, with a Wake service at 7 p.m. Mrs. Shubert died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Westwing Place, DeWitt. She and her husband had farmed near DeWitt and Grand Mound. She also had worked in area restaurants. Lelah Kellow was born Nov. 6, 1918, in Corydon. She married Walter Grimm in 1941 in Grand Mound. He died in 1974. She married Frank Schubert in 1984 in Clinton. He died in 1992. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or DeWitt Community Hospital Fund. Survivors include daughters, Betty Warner, Port Royal, S.C., and Carolyn Lane, DeWitt; sons, Lonnie Grimm, Davenport, and Carlie Grimm, DeWitt; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; half-sisters, Sharon Baulduck, Cedar Rapids, and Maxine Ranson, Des Moines; a brother, William Simons, DeWitt; a half-brother, Bob Pasley, Springtown, Texas; and foster brothers, Robert and Gene Doran, both of Durant, and Ralph Doran, Elizabeth, Ill.

Phyllis Griffin
EAST MOLINE -- Services for Phyllis Lucille Griffin, of East Moline, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the mortuary. Mrs. Griffin died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at her home. She retired in 1994 after working for 17 years as a sales clerk at Cleveland Quarry. She also had worked at the former Turnstyle, Moline. Phyllis Arnold was born Oct. 25, 1935, to Oren and Irene Arnold in Ottumwa, Iowa. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her many friends at Bingo. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Reita Griffin, Lynn Center, Ill.; daughters, Connie Griffin, Orion, Ill., and Betty Schmidt, East Moline; grandchildren, Paula Griffin, Geneseo, Ill., Jennifer (Steve) Van Watermeulen, Orion, Ill., and Tracy Griffin, Silvis, Ill.; step-grandchildren, Nick Mason, Moline, Darey Mason, Rock Island, and Shannon Mason, Lynn Center; great-grandchildren, Tyler Griffin, Silvis, and Nicholas Griffin, Geneseo; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Odell Arnold, East Moline, and Richard and Liz Arnold, Phoenix. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

LeRoy Schutt
WHEATLAND, Iowa -- Memorial services for LeRoy H. F. Schutt, of Wheatland, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Private burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery , Wheatland. Visitation is 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Schutt died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Davenport. He retired in 1981 after working for more than 25 years as a sales representative at P.W. Stankee Co., Wheatland. Mr. Schutt was born Feb. 28, 1916, to Herbert and Alma (VonRoden) Schutt in Toronto, Iowa. He married Mildred E. Rowold on Feb. 4, 1939, in Wheatland. She preceded him in death Feb. 10, 1998. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Wheatland, a past master of Zireditha Lodge 184, Wheatland. He also served on the Wheatland City Council. After retirement, he developed a passion for counted cross stitching and making stained glass art work. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Church of Christ Cemetery Fund. Survivors include daughters, Karen Buckingham, North Bethesda, Md., and Judith Guenther, Eldridge; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a brother, Kenneth Schutt, Omaha, Neb.

Carmella 'Carm' Long
BETTENDORF -- Services for Carmella H. "Carm" Long, of Bettendorf, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Long died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Carmella McGrath was born Nov. 20, 1921, to Joseph M. And Margaret F. (Buckley) McGrath in Davenport. She married William K. Long on April 29, 1944, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and a former member of the Catholic Service Board. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy in life. Memorials may be made to Assumption High School, Davenport. Survivors include her husband, William; a daughter, Maureen Kimmell, Colorado Springs; sons and daughters-in-law, William M. and Peg Long, Schaumburg, Ill., and Mike and Teri Long, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Andrew, Jamin, Kevin and Tommy Kimmell, and Michelle, Steve, Kathy, Christie, Abby and Anthony Long; a sister, Margaret Pracht, Bethel Park, Pa.; and a sister-in-law, Margaret McGrath, Davenport. She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Gilhofer, 1992, and a brother, Joseph McGrath, 1992.

Dorothy Schultz
STANWOOD, Iowa -- Services for Dorothy C. Schultz, of Stanwood, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Stanwood. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Oxford. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton, with a Parish Vigil service at 7 p.m. Mrs. Schultz died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. She was a homemaker and had worked at Sears in Iowa City and John's Repair Service. Dorothy Cox was born March 21, 1928, in York Township, Iowa County. She married John Taylor in 1963 in Stanwood. He preceded her in death. She married John Schultz in 1978 in Cedar County. He preceded her in death. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Patricia Isaacs, Iowa City, and Elizabeth and Mary Matthess, both of Tipton; sons, Michael Matthess, Ladora, Barry Matthess, Lone Tree, and Lloyd Matthess, Tipton; 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Margaret Bartels, Maquoketa; and sisters, Margaret Schott, South Amana, Maureen Hamilton, Moline, Mary Vest, Uklah, Calif., Colleen Keith, Iowa City, Emilie Young, Oxford, and JoAnne Neuzil, Riverside.

Raymond Anderson
MOLINE -- Services for Raymond A. Anderson, of Moline, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Anderson died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill. He retired in 1972 from the paint and maintenance department after working for 35 years at International Harvester-East Moline Works. Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 27, 1914, in Almyra, Ark. He married Ruth Meadows in 1938 in Missouri. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Carol Christensen, East Moline, and Nancy Nelson and Shirley Oakleaf, both of Moline; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Egger
EAST MOLINE -- Services for Mary Jane Egger, of East Moline, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Cemetery , Silvis, Ill. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Mrs. Egger died Friday, April 9, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis. She retired in 1989 after working for 12 years as a computer programmer at J.I. Case, Rock Island. Mary French was born May 12, 1932, in Moline. She married Clester Egger in 1958 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Nancy Spencer, Rockford, Ill., and Crystal Gooch, Colona, Ill.; sons, Robert Kopel, East Moline, Jerry Kopel, East Moline, and Tim Egger, Chicago; six grandchildren; her mother, Margarette French, East Moline; and a sister, Betty French, Dixon, Ill.

Clyde Jess
BELLEVUE, Iowa -- Clyde R. Jess, of Bellevue, died Saturday, April 11, 1999, at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue. In keeping with his request, the body has been donated to the medical science department at the University of Iowa. Private family services will be Tuesday at Kingery Funeral Home, Bellevue. There will be no visitation. Mr. Jess was born March 11, 1919, in Dubuque. He married Algean Gretchen in 1940 in Iowa City. He had worked as an ammunition packing specialist at the Savanna Army Depot, retiring in 1973. He served in the Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sharon Kurt, Bellevue; sons, Tom, Tampa, Fla., and Marty and Mike, both of Bellevue; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Merrick, Maquoketa, Jeanette Watson, Savanna, Ill., and Grace Struble, El Cajon, Calif.; and brothers, Kenneth and Donald Jess, both of Bellevue.

Helen Baker
COLONA, Ill. -- Helen Marie Baker, of Colona, died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill. The body has been donated to the School of Medicine at the University of Iowa. Runge Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Helen Rayburn was born May 18, 1919, in Davenport. She married Donald Baker in 1936 in Davenport. She was employed at Oscar Mayer, Davenport. Memorials may be made to any organization helping Native Americans. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Lisa Brown, Davenport; sons, Donald and Jerry Baker, both of Davenport; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Edna, Betty, Nora, Margaret and Goldie.

Karen Ladwig
MOLINE -- Karen A. Ladwig, of Moline, died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. In keeping with her request, cremation rites will be accorded. No services or visitation will be held. Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Karen Lentz was born May 3, 1942, in Rock Island. She married Larry Ladwig in 1966 in Rock Island. She was employed as a teacher at Rock Island High School. She also had taught in Moline. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Laurel Richardson, Georgetown, Tenn.; a son, Steve Ladwig, Schaumburg, Ill., and a brother, Nicholas Lentz Jr., Rock Island.

Brian Mellen
SAVANNA, Ill. -- Memorial services for Brian H. Mellen, of Savanna, will be 3 p.m. today at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, Iowa. Inurnment will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery , Clinton. There is no visitation. Mr. Mellen died Friday, April 9, 1999, at his home. He had worked at Drives Inc., Fulton. He also had worked at Eagle Foods, Clinton. Mr. Mellen was born Feb. 21, 1959, in Clinton. He served in the Army for three years. Survivors include his mother, Lois Mellen, a sister, Susan VanHyfte, and a brother, Robert Mellen III, all of Clinton.

Velma Boulton
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Velma G. Boulton, of Muscatine, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery . Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Eastern Star rites accorded at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Boulton died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Community Health Resources, Muscatine. She had worked as an insurance clerk at the office of Dr. House and for 10 years as a telephone operator at Sears & Robuck. Velma Wasson was born June 28, 1920, in Nichols. She married Floyd Boulton in 1942 in Columbia, Mo. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Ann Jones, Muscatine; sons, Steven Boulton, Tema, Guana, Africa, Richard Boulton, Blue Springs, Mo., and David Boulton, Muscatine; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Elsie Campbell, Marion, Ky., and Darlene Carr, Mattoon, Ill.

DAVENPORT -- Services for Thomas S. Shadden, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, with military rites accorded by Davenport American Legion Post 26. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Mr. Shadden died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at his home. He was employed as a fork lift operator at Apogee Packaging, Milan, Ill. Mr. Shadden was born Jan. 12, 1946, in Centerville, Iowa. He married Judy Brems in 1963 in Rock Island. He married Janis Rank in 1977 in Rock Island. He served in the military in Vietnam. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include daughters, Kelly Shadden and Elisha Shadden, both of Davenport; sons, Steven Shadden and Joseph Shadden, both of Rock Island; nine grandchildren; sisters, Betty McClain, Pana, Ill., Delores Fryxell, Moline, Marzel Guyton, Guin, Ala., and Barbara Veach and Pat Sury, both of Unionville, Mo.; and brothers, Robert Shadden, Cincinatti, Iowa, Billie Shadden, Coal Valley, Ill., and Richard Shadden, Davenport. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Billy Morris, a daughter, a granddaughter and two sisters.

Effie Wiedle
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa -- Effie May Wiedle, of West Liberty, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at the home of her daughter in West Liberty. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, with a memorial service at 7 p.m. Effie Yarber was born July 23, 1907, in Point Pleasant, Mo. She married William Wiedle in 1926 in St. Louis, Mo. He preceded her in death. She had worked as a seamstress and at Warner Brothers Pharmaceuticals, St. Louis. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Little, West Liberty; a granddaughter; and sisters, Freddie Smith, Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Nellie Counts, Little Rock, Ark.

Lilly Erickson
DAVENPORT -- Services for Lilly Erickson, of Davenport, will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Mrs. Erickson died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. She was employed as a cook and retired in 1986 after 32 years at the Park Cafe of the Village of East Davenport. Lilly Peterson was born April 4, 1924, in Strum, Wis. She married Paul Erickson on Aug. 17, 1946, in Whitehall, Wis. He died Feb. 9, 1990. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Kiddoo, Moline, and Sandra and Don Hudson, Davenport; a son, Paul Erickson, Davenport; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Edna Hanson, Eau Claire, Wis., Mavis Hanson, Eau Claire, Wis.; a brother, Dennis Peterson, Whitehall, Wis.; a brother-in-law, John Erickson, Osseo, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
