DAVENPORT -- Services for Maxine J. Kreinbring, of Davenport, formerly of Calamus, Iowa, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Lowden (Iowa) City Cemetery . Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Mrs. Kreinbring died Monday, April 19, 1999, at her home in Bettendorf after a brief illness. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Wolf Beverage Co., Davenport. Before that, she had worked at Saga Food Service at St. Ambrose College, Davenport. Maxine Hamdorf was born June 24, 1924, in Calamus. She married LeRoy Kreinbring in 1942 in Wheatland, Iowa. He died in 1956. Memorials may go to Scott County Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Association. Survivors include a son, Kim, Davenport; two grandchildren; and sisters, Jean Borchers, Big Rock, Iowa, and Millie McMillan, Davenport.

Warren Skiles
CAMBRIDGE, Ill. -- Services for Warren W. Skiles, of Cambridge, will be will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services Cambridge Chapel. The Rev. Brian Giese will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, Kewanee, where the Kewanee Veterans Council will conduct military rites. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Skiles died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. He was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Elmira, to James and Dorothy (Huff) Skiles. He served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II. He married Frances Girkin on Aug. 9, 1947, in Kewanee. He was employed 28 years as a maintenance man at Alcoa. He retired in 1987. Mr. Skiles was a member of First Christian Church, the Izaak Walton Trap and Skeet Club, Ducks Unlimited, Flemish-American Club and Post 31, American Legion, all of Kewanee, and the National Rifle Association and Civilian Conservation Corps. He shot trap for more 40 years and had helped operate Baker Park Trap Club, Kewanee. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Memorials may be made to the Warren Skiles Memorial Fund. Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Kim Lematty, Columbus Junction, Iowa, Debra and Tony Kares, Winterhaven, Fla., Cindy and Ron Hacker, Ohio, Ill., and Kelly and Keith Moon, Muncy, Pa.; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Jackie Skiles and James and Marie Skiles, all of Geneseo; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Gerald Skiles, Kewanee, and Floyd Cooke, Ankeny, Iowa. His parents and a grandson, Jason Larimer, preceded him in death.

Robert VanWinkle
BETTENDORF -- Services for Robert A. "Rip" VanWinkle, of Bettendorf, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at McGinnis, Chambers and Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, where military services will be conducted. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. VanWinkle died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, after a brief illness. He was employed more than 20 years as a sheet metal fabricator at Rock Island Arsenal. He retired in 1991. He was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Orville and Helen (McKenzie) VanWinkle. He married Marjorie A. Miller on March 22, 1958, in Lone Tree, Iowa. During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force and was honorable discharged in 1957. He enjoyed fishing and wrote "Fisherman's Corner" for the Bettendorf News for many years. His memberships included the Quad-City Bass Club and the Dubuque Bass Club. In 1976, he was honored as "Fisherman of the Year." He also was an avid collector of Beanie Babies and phonograph records. Hardly a day went by that he did not visit a flea market or garage sale. One of his special joys was "running errands" for his family members whenever something was needed. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; daughters and son-in-law, Vicky and Robert Neitzel, Davenport, and Jenny VanWinkle, Bettendorf; a son, Jeff VanWinkle; granddaughters, Amber and Nicole; a sister, Helen Louise Salck, Muscatine, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard R. and Sandra VanWinkle, Bettendorf, and Duane A. and Nina VanWinkle, Port Byron, Ill.; and a close family friend, Mona.

Bette Wendling
ROCK ISLAND -- Bette M. Wendling, of Rock Island, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. The Rev. Doug Ganyo will officiate. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. Mrs. Wendling had worked parttime at The Fashion, Rock Island, and was employed as a secretary at International Harvester, Farmall Works, Rock Island. Bette Mead was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Moline, to Arthur and Louise (Hallas) Mead. She married Chalmer "Chuck" Wendling on July 4, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. She was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church; King's Daughters; and American Legion Auxiliary 246, Moline. She was involved in several card clubs. She loved her cocker spaniel, Sassy. She enjoyed singing, dancing, crafts and music. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sally L. Vallillo, Rock Island; and a son, Scott Wendling and Trina Manilla, Sacramento, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, June Mart; and an infant brother.

Imogene Despeghel
MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Imogene R. Despeghel, of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery , Maquoketa. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, with the rosary at 4 p.m. recited by the Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil at 7 p.m. Mrs. Despeghel died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City, after a brief illness. She worked 25 years at Clinton Engines, Maquoketa, and was employed 15 years as a housekeeper for the priests at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa. She retired July 1, 1998. Imogene Jaynes was born April 27, 1930, in Spragueville. She married Lawrence Despeghel in 1948 in Maquoketa. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Julie Mara, Swisher; a son, Keith, Bettendorf; five grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and a sister, Jean Wilslef, Wyoming, Iowa.

KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for Carolyn E. Matuszyk, of Kewanee, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Kewanee. Mrs. Matuszyk died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria. She had worked at Kewanee Mail-o-graph, the CakenCream Restaurant, Boss Glove Co., Wyffels Hybrids, Mrs. Smiths Bakery and Kewanee Manufacturing. Carolyn Petty was born Jan. 30, 1937, in Kewanee. She married John Matuszyk Sr. in 1955 in Kewanee. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Survivors include her husband; daughters Anna VanDeSampel and Carolyn Eilts, both of Kewanee; sons, John Jr., Frank, Joseph, Tim and Anthony, all of Kewanee, and Mark, Wyanet; 22 grandchildren; a sister, Jenny Nadeau, Las Vegas; and brothers, Clifford "Beano" Petty, Dixon, Gerald "Sliver" Petty, Plano, Kenneth "Nook" Petty, Galva, and Lloyd "Butch" Petty, Kewanee.

Stanley Pickrel
WOODHULL, Ill. -- Services for Stanley R. Pickrel, of Bushnell, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Woodhull. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery . Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Pickrel died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. He worked many years in the construction industry including at Olson Construction. He was born Dec. 1, 1950, in Aledo. He was an Army veteran. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include daughters, Darcy and Amanda; sons, Joshua and Jesse; his mother, Lorraine Pickrel, Woodhull; sisters, Linda Schmeer, Kissimmee, Fla., Chris Dolan, New Windsor, Anita Monkus, Orion, and Jean Pickrel, Woodhull;. and a brother, Steve, Woodhull.

LOWDEN, Iowa -- Services for Stuart F. DeMoss, of Lowden, formerly of Epworth and Baldwin, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery , rural Maquoketa. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. DeMoss died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at DeWitt Community Hospital. He worked 12 years at Farm Service Corp., Anamosa, and 10 years at John Deere Co., Dubuque. Most recently, he was employed as a field representative the past 15 years at Tri-State/Swiss Valley Co. He was born April 28, 1937, in Iowa. He married Janice Hentges in 1962 in Galena, Ill. He served four years in the Navy. Memorials may be made to the Stuart F. DeMoss Memorial Fund. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Faye DeMoss, Holy Cross, and Jody DeMoss, Cascade; a son, Paul, Dubuque; three grandchildren; sisters, Mary Carlson, Monmouth, Arlene McCutcheon, Spragueville, and Dora Foster, Tacoma, Wash.; and brothers, Robert, Cascade, and Rex, Dubuque.

KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for Mary N. Weeks, of Kewanee, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kewanee. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee, with a rosary at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Weeks died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Jackie Ensley's Care Home, Kewanee. She was employed as a cashier at Gerwigs, Kresge and Black & Fletcher, all in Kewanee. She retired in 1969. Mary DeKazel was born July 22, 1906, in Wethersfield Township. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn Jenkins, Toulon; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Emily DePauw, Rock Island, and Elsie Kirley, Kewanee.

K'Hari DeJesus
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for K'Hari Xaiver La'nes DeJesus-month-old son of Ebonee Granger, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery , Kewanee. He died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Kewanee Hospital. K'Hari was born March 15, 1999. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a brother, K'Yi Griffen, Kewanee; his grandmother, Lillie Bond, Kewanee; and his great-grandmother, Leatha Bond, Gary, Ind.

Hazel Hein
COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa -- Services for Hazel Pine Hein, of Columbus Junction, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Columbus City Cemetery . No visitation will be held. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery . Mrs. Hein died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Beverly Englund, in Zellwood, Fla. Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, is in charge of arrangements. She had been a school teacher. Hazel Adams was born Dec. 9, 1903, in Columbus Junction. She married William Pine. He died in 1970. She later married Ralph Morton and William Hein. They also preceded her in death. Memorials may be made to Columbus City United Methodist Church. Survivors include daughters, Beverly Englund, Zellwood, and Nadeen Comann, Marble Falls, Texas; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; a half sister, Ida Korn, Wapello; and a half brother, Roy Adams Jr., of California.

BETTENDORF -- Services for Beverly K. Pesses, of Bettendorf, formerly of Rock Island, will be 1:30 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in Rock Island Hebrew Cemetery . Mrs. Pesses died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Beverly Krasne was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Fremont, Neb., to Michael and Lena (Lieberman) Krasne. She married Louis S. Pesses on Jan. 25, 1944, in Elkins, W.Va. She had attended the University of Iowa. She was a member of the Tri-City Jewish Center and Quad-City Chapter of Hadassah. Memorials may be made to Tri-City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Anita Pesses, Bowie, Md.; granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth and Jordan Leigh Pesses, Bowie; an aunt; a niece; and a nephew. She was preceded in death by a sister, Muriel.

Brian Jensen
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Brian G. Jensen, of 3140 36th St., will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Jensen was employed 28 years as a machine operator at Parr Instrument Co., Moline, before retiring. He was born Nov. 28, 1945, in Rock Island, to Rollo J. Jensen and Kathleen M. (Murrin) Jensen. He married Pamela Welling on Jan. 15, 1994, in Rock Island. He graduated from Alleman High School in 1963. He enjoyed motorcycles and bowling. Memorials way be made to American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Juliette Jensen, Lawton, Okla.; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Staci Jensen, Rock Island, Shawn and Sheri Jensen, Rock Island, John and Shantel Jensen, Lawton, Okla., James and Christina Jensen, Milan, Ill., and B. Scott and Shellie Jensen, Rock Island; five stepchildren; 11 grandchildren; his mother, Kathleen Jensen, Rock Island; and a sister, Janet Jacobs, Summerfield, Fla. He was preceded in death by his father.

Robert McCoy
MILAN, Ill. -- Services for Robert A. McCoy, of Milan, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. McCoy died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. He was employed 18 years as a machinist at Rock Island Arsenal. He retired in 1972. He was born March 14, 1917, in Memphis, Mo., to Phillip Logan and Edith Hellen (Grabowski) McCoy. He married Mary Kuehnel on July 31, 1995, in Rock Island. He married Rosalie Phipps in 1950 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She died in 1982. He was a longtime member of the Rock Island Boat Club and served as commodore. He enjoyed fishing, reading, golfing and traveling. He was devoted to his family and friends and loved animals, especially his beloved dog, Scruffy. From 1942 to 1947, he served in the Army's 41st Tank Battalion. He achieved the rank of master sergeant, served in Germany and Austria and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received several medals of honor including the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Purple Heart. He fought in World War II and the Korean War. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Helen (Mrs. Clyde) Kent, Springhill, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Mary Lucas, Richmond, Ind.; stepsons, George Lekos, Milan, and Marshall Baker, Widefield, Colo.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Edith Daniels and Erma Johansen, Memphis, Mo.; and brothers, Ora McCoy, Marshalltown, Iowa, and John McCoy, of California. He also was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil and James; and sisters, Mabel Gray and Ester Hart.

Gertrude Grant
DAVENPORT -- Services for Gertrude L. Grant, of Kahl Home for the Aged and Infirm, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mrs. Grant died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Gertrude retired in December 1971 as a clerk at Rock Island Arsenal. Gertrude Lucille Thauren was born March 9, 1911, in Muscatine County, Iowa, to Frank X. and Margaret (O'Melia) Thauren. She married Ralph Grant on Feb. 19, 1949, in Davenport at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He had been the president and manager at the former Davenport Drop Forge Co. Ralph died June 23, 1975. Gertrude had been a WAC, serving in the U.S. Army as a Tech 5 Sergeant, during World War II. She was a member of the church, American Legion Auxiliary Post 26, Quad-City Times Plus 60 Club, Catholic Women's League, Arsenal Retired Women's Club and NARF. Memorials can be made to St. Anthony's Care & Share. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and David Pyne, Dexter, Mich.; a granddaughter, Marilyn Pyne, Kalamazoo, Mich.; and sisters, Mary E. Bunce, Maywood, Ill., and Margaret George, Muscatine, Iowa. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, John and Frank Thauren. May they rest in peace.

MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- Marjorie A. Vensel, of Marysville, formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Marysville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Underwood Funeral Home, Marysville, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Vensel was a homemaker. She married William Vensel Sr. in 1941 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Judith Bennett, Normal, Ill., Kathy Schroeder, Center, Mo., Jean Huber, Rock Island, Mary Stroup, Brentwood, Mo., and Barbara German, Marysville; sons, William Jr., Galena, Ohio, John, Minooka, Ill., and David, Bettendorf; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Whisler, Fairfield Bay, Ark.

CAMDENTON, Mo. -- Services for John T. Bednarik, of Camdenton, formerly of Bettendorf, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Allee-Reed Funeral Home, Camdenton. Burial will be in Allee Memorial Gardens, Camdenton. Visitation is 3-6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Bednarik died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Windsor Convalescent Center. He was employed as a machinist at Bettendorf Co. and later worked at ACF Industries, Albuquerque, N.M. He retired in 1972. He was born April 13, 1912, in Chicago. He married Josephine Malik in 1935 in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Camdenton. Survivors include wife; daughters, Patricia Doyle, Davenport, and Nancy Register, Bangor, Maine; sons, John Jr., Thorndike, Maine, and Frank, Camdenton; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Jones, Camdenton.
