Ralph Reitz
DAVENPORT -- Services for Ralph J. "Fritz" Reitz, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Mr. Reitz died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. He was born Feb. 4, 1935, in Galena, Ill., to Ralph and Beulah (Gerlich) Reitz. He married Joanne Davis on Aug. 15, 1953, in Galena. Mr. Reitz retired in 1992 from Packing Inc. in Minnetonka, Minn., where he was a sales representative. Before that, he had worked at Command Business Systems. He spent many years with youth baseball programs. He enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting and wood carving. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; sons, John, Jerry and Mark, all of Davenport; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Michael, in 1996.

Richard Smiley
ROCK ISLAND -- Richard J. Smiley, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Smiley was a police officer for the city of Rock Island for 23 years. He retired as a lieutenant in 1980. He later worked in security at Deere & Co. for 18 years. He retired Dec. 31, 1998, from the Parts Distribution Center, Milan, Ill. While working for the city of Rock Island, he received several commendations, including Police Officer of the Year. He was born Jan. 6, 1932, in Galesburg, Ill., to Wayne and Stella (Peterson) Smiley. He married Linda D. Nickelson on Aug. 18, 1972, in Rock Island. He was an Army veteran and was devoted to his family. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society for Colon Cancer Research, Easter Seal Foundation or Rock Island Police Benevolent Association. Survivors include his wife; daughters and a son-in-law, Shari Smiley, Rock Island, and Angela and Steve Bradley, Hampton, Va.; sons, Greg Scalf, Rock Island, and Alan Scalf, Anaheim, Calif.; grandchildren, Ashley Scalf, and Nicholas, Megan and Allison Bradley; his mother, Stella Smiley, Rock Island; and sisters, Madeline Daveronas, Rock Island, Marilyn Davis, Sherrard, Ill., and Sandra Tertipes, Moline. He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers-in-law.

Betty Nelson
DAVENPORT -- Services for Betty W. Nelson, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Mrs. Nelson died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. She was employed 30 years as a women's retail buyer at Petersen Harned Von Maur and Scharff's. Betty White was born Dec. 31, 1918, at Clear Lake, Minn., to Arthur T. and Beth (Jesdahl) White. She married Darol A. Nelson in September 1936 in Decorah, Iowa. He died Oct. 7, 1980. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Davenport; a 50-year member of Eastern Star; and a member of Business and Professional Women's Club. She enjoyed sewing, golfing, playing the piano, reading and traveling. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Davenport, and National Cancer Society. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Jacquelyn and Donald Davis, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Barbara and Neil Ells, Moline; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Carole Anne Nelson, White Bear Lake, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Lamb, Seattle, and Gladys Peters, Clear Lake, Minn.; and a companion and special friend, James Turner, Laramie, Wyo.

Robert VanWinkle
BETTENDORF -- Services for Robert A. "Rip" VanWinkle, of Bettendorf, will be 10:30 a.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers and Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, where military services will be conducted. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. VanWinkle died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at his home, after an apparent heart attack. He was employed more than 30 years as a sheet metal fabricator at Rock Island Arsenal. He retired in 1991. He was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Orville and Helen (McKenzie) VanWinkle. He married Marjorie A. Miller on March 22, 1958, in Lone Tree, Iowa. During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1957. He enjoyed fishing and wrote "Fisherman's Corner" for the Bettendorf News for many years. His memberships included the Quad-City Bass Club and the Dubuque Bass Club. In 1976, he was honored as "Fisherman of the Year." He also was an avid collector of Beanie Babies and phonograph records. Hardly a day went by that he did not visit a flea market or garage sale. One of his special joys was "running errands" for his family members whenever something was needed. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; daughters and son-in-law, Vicky and Robert Neitzel, Davenport, and Jenny VanWinkle, Bettendorf; a son, Jeff VanWinkle, Bettendorf; granddaughters, Amber and Nicole; a sister, Helen Louise Salek, Muscatine, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard R. and Sandra VanWinkle, Bettendorf, and Duane A. and Nina VanWinkle, Port Byron, Ill.; and a close family friend, Mona.

Iris Miller
EAST MOLINE -- Memorial services for Iris L. Miller, of East Moline, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Moline Church of Christ, where she was an active member. No visitation will be held. Private burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Mrs. Miller died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill. Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, is in charge of arrangements. When her children were younger, she drove a school bus for the East Moline grade schools and United Township High School. Iris McBride was born June 12, 1934, in Hamburg, Ill., to Harry and Elsie (Knight) McBride. She married Ronald D. Miller on Dec. 20, 1953, in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moline Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Daniel Denato, Ashburn, Va., and Lori and Les Flores, Silvis, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Hope Miller, Springfield; grandchildren, Rebecca Ryals, Adam, Kit, Beth and Schawn Flores and Heather and Jaimie Jo Miller; three great- grandchildren; and a sister, Mardell Liles, Jerseyville, Ill. Iris was preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Flores.

Robert Williams
EAST MOLINE -- Services for Robert H. Williams, of East Moline, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, East Moline. Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Moline. Mr. Williams died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at his home. Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary Ltd., East Moline, is in charge of arrangements. He retired in 1985 as an assembler after 25 years at John Deere Harvester. He was born June 6, 1929, in Detroit. He married Anna McIntyre in 1949 in Georgetown, Ky. Memorials may be made to Rock Island County Hospice Care. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Veronica Brackins, Teresa Foreman and Sheryl Bowie, all of Lansing, Mich., and Janice Coney, Minneapolis; sons, Joel, Rock Island, and Rodney, East Moline; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bessie Thomas and Anna Williams, both of Georgetown, and Dorothy White, Moline.

Glen Hollenbeck
SILVIS, Ill. -- Services for Glen A. Hollenbeck, of Silvis, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Southlawn Cemetery , Seymour, Iowa. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Mr. Hollenbeck died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis. He was employed as head of customer service at American Air Filter, Moline, for 27 years. After that, he was employed as lead driver at the Greater Quad-City Auction. He was born Dec. 9, 1931, in Ravanna, Mo. He married Shirley Lear in 1962 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; a son, Fred Lear, Moline; and a brother, Harold, Seymour.

Mary Smith
THOMSON, Ill. -- Mary J. Smith, of Thomson, formerly of Mount Carroll, Ill., and Maquoketa, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at her home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery , Mount Carroll. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith retired in 1994 after 17 years as an English teacher at East Central, Mount Carroll, and Savanna schools. She was also involved in owning and operating Oakville Country Club, near Mount Carroll; and Lynnwood Lynks and Lodge, near Thomson. Mary McCarthy was born March 16, 1943. She married Randy Smith in 1964 in Maquoketa. Memorials may be made to Samaritan Hospice and Homecare, or the Carroll County Cancer Society. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Keller Coatney, and a son, Todd, both of Thomson; and a step-grandson.

Manuela Sanchez
MOLINE -- Manuela "Nellie" Perez Sanchez, formerly of Moline, died April 6, 1999, in Uriangato, GTO, Mexico. Burial is in Uriangato. Memorial services will be 8:30 a.m. Saturday and May 1 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Moline. Mrs. Sanchez was a homemaker. Nellie Perez was born June 7, 1928, in Moline. She married Carlos Sanchez in 1956 in Chicago. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include her husband; a sister, Jane Pena, Davenport; and brothers, Jesse and Seferino Perez, both of Moline, and Rufus Perez, Rock Island.

Robert McSparin Sr.
COAL VALLEY, Ill. -- Robert G. McSparin Sr., of 507 E. 22nd Ave. A, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at his home. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, with military services by Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 299. Visitation is 3-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline, with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. by Moline Chapter 258 Order of Eastern Star and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. at Doric Lodge 319 A.F.& A.M. Mr. McSparin retired in 1985 as a parts supervisor after 32 years at American Air Filter. He was born April 25, 1928, in Scott County, Mo. He married Betty LaMar in 1951 in Moline. During World War II, he served in the Navy. Memorials may be made to Doric Lodge Scholarship Fund. Survivors include his wife; daughters, C.J. McIntyre, Madison, Wis., and Jacci Albrecht, Geneseo; a son, Robert G. Jr., Coal Valley; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Miles Mason
ALEDO, Ill. -- Miles E. Mason, of Aledo, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo, with visitation two hours before the services. Masonic services also will be held. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery . Mr. Mason owned and operated Mason Jewelry Store, Aledo, for many years. He also employed in insurance sales. He was born Sept. 11, 1910, near Winfield, Iowa. He married Margaret Lofgren in 1931 in Memphis, Mo. She died in 1991. Memorials may be made to Miles E. Mason Memorial Fund. Survivors include grandchildren, Cindy Hutchins, Lisa Parkinson and Jeffrey Parkinson, all of Aledo; and three great-grandsons.

Andrew Sorensen
DURANT, Iowa -- Services for Andrew A. Sorensen, of Durant, and Mission, Texas, will be 10 a.m. today at Risen Christ Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Durant Cemetery . Visitation was 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bentley Funeral Homes, Durant, and 9-10 a.m. today at the church. Mr. Sorensen died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Northern Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City. He owned and operated Sorensen Construction, Durant, from 1964 until retirement in 1999. He also owned, operated and developed the South Towne Mobile Home Park in Wilton until 1998. He was born Feb. 29, 1932, in Durant. He married Marilyn Telsrow in 1953 in Davenport. Memorials may go to the church. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Cindy Kummer, Tinley Park, Ill., and Bette Wells, Springfield, Ill.; a son, Mark, Maple Grove, Minn.; five grandchildren; and a brother, Dale, Winter Springs, Fla.

CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Paul W. Brill, of 2808 Garfield St., will be 11 a.m. Friday at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Everett Reynolds
KNOXVILLE, Ill. -- Services for Everett E. "Boss" Reynolds, of 711 Johnson Ave., will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Alexis American Legion, Post 189, and the Harry Philblad American Legion, Post 749, Knoxville. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Reynolds died Monday, April 19, 1999, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg. He worked at International Farmall Works, Rock Island; Haynes and Azdell Implement Store and car dealership, Alexis; and as an insurance agent at Pekin Insurance Company. He had also been a farmer. He was born Dec. 15, 1910, in Kelly Township, near Alexis. He married Louise Baker in 1942 in Kahoka, Mo. She died in 1997. He served overseas in the Army. Memorials may be made to United Presbyterian Church, Alexis; or one of the American Legions. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Moore, Knoxville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Violet Hickok, Monmouth, Ill.

Mabel DeSkeere
MORRISON, Ill. -- Services for Mabel DeSkeere, of Morrison, formerly of Kewanee, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Nursing Home, Kewanee. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, rural Kewanee. Mrs. DeSkeere died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Morrison. She was employed at many area restaurants. She also worked at the cab company, Peoples Cleaners and Walworth Co., Kewanee. She retired in 1965. Mabel Huffman was born Aug. 6, 1902, in Kewanee. She married Albert DeSkeere in 1965. He died in 1979. Memorials may be made to Whiting Home, Kewanee. Survivors include stepdaughters, Mariellen Davis, Kewanee, and Barbara Steele, Taylor Ridge; a stepson, David DeSkeere, Richland Hills, Texas; a grandson; 15 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Linnie A. Finley, of 2421 Lutheran Dr., will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Nichols Cemetery . Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Finley died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Community Health Resources. Linnie Mills was born Nov. 1, 1903, in Nichols. She married Clarence Ivan Finley in 1923 in Muscatine. They had farmed near the Bayfield area. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Lisle, Haynes City, Fla.; sons, James D., Muscatine, and Theodore D., Coal Valley, Ill.; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Slater
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for Phyllis Slater, of Kewanee, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery , Kewanee. Mrs. Slater died Monday, April 19, 1999, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. Phyllis Petty was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Kewanee. She married Franklyn Slater in 1942 in Kewanee. He died Dec. 18, 1998. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Kewanee. Survivors include a daughter, Rose Ocheltree, Moline; sisters, Marcella Wetsell, Davenport, Shirley Wilkins, Kewanee, Mary Gorey, Oklahoma, and Judy Miller, Tennesse; and brothers, Richard Petty, Toulon, Merlin Petty, Neponset, and Robert Petty, Galesburg.

Sadie Doherty
CLINTON, Iowa -- Sadie B. Doherty, of Clinton, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Samaritan Hospital North, Clinton. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Clinton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery , Clinton. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Schmitz Funeral Home, Clinton, with a rosary at 7 p.m. by Daughters of Isabella. Miss Doherty was employed as a department manager in the office of Burpee Seed Co., Clinton. She worked there 40 years. She was born Dec.15, 1918, in Clinton. Survivors include a cousin, Jeanette Betts, DeWitt; and special friends, Ruby Matthew and Maurice Losey, both of Clinton.
