MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Evelyn C. Shimanek, of Nevis, Minn., formerly of Maquoketa and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Carson and Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery , Maquoketa. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Shimanek died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Park Rapids, Minn, following a short illness. She retired in 1984 after 25 years as a calibrator and packer with Square D Company, Cedar Rapids. Evelyn Baresel was born May 2, 1932, in Jackson County, Iowa. She married Louis Shimanek in 1954 in Nashua. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include her husband; and brothers, William Baresel, Maquoketa, and James Baresel, Clinton, Iowa.

Chester Brimhall
NEPONSET, Ill. -- Services for Chester L. Brimhall, of Neponset, Ill., will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee, Ill. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Brimhall died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at his home. He worked as a supervisor at Johnson's Control, retiring in 1985 because of poor health. He was born Feb. 4, 1941, in Wedron, Ill. He married Helen Jackson in 1970 in Geneva, Ill. A memorial fund has been established and can be left at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mona Lisa Brimhall, Kewanee; sons, William, Neponset, Robert, Kewanee, and James, Peoria; four grandchildren; a sister, Doris Hauser, Aurora; and a brother, Robert, Ottawa.

Clarence Janssen
PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. -- Services for Clarence A. "Art" Jenssen, of 18521 Anderson Road, will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Prophetstown. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Prophetstown. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Mr. Janssen died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at CGH Medical Center, Sterling. He was born July 4, 1921, in Lyndon. He married Annelle Rick in 1943 in Sterling. The couple farmed most of their married life. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Judy Borg, Indianapolis, and Kathy Sandrock, Prophetstown; a son, Larry, Prophetstown; eight grandchildren; a step-grandchild; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Sally Habben, Morrison; and brothers, Robert, Rock Falls, and Dale, Sterling.

Avis Ashby
PEORIA, Ill. -- Avis C. Ashby, of Atlanta, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Atlanta. Services will be at a later date in Parkview Cemetery , Peoria. Family Funeral Services, Milan, is in charge of arrangements. She was employed 35 years with the Georgia State Police. Avis Jones was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Peoria. She married Jim Ashby in 1952. Survivors include a son, Bob, Tampa, Fla.

Gilbert Smith
SILVIS, Ill. -- Services for Gilbert G. Smith, of Silvis, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery , East Moline, Ill. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Mr. Smith died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis. He was a painter for John Deere Harvester, East Moline, where he retired. He was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Wilford, Ark. He married Josephine Trujillo in 1961 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Tommie Stephenson, Jonesboro, Ark., LaDonna Smith, Arkadelphia, Ark., Beatrice Trujillo, Corvallis, Ore., Mary Coussens Clark, Silvis, and Anne Steagall, Barstow; sons, Jackie, Truman, Ark., Gilbert Frank, Moline, Ernest, Saxton, Mo., and Joseph Trujillo, Peoria; a sister, Pansy Matucha, Moline; a brother, Donnie, Fort Madison, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Elsie Hirstein
DAVENPORT -- Services for Elsie M. Hirstein, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Hirstein died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at her home, after an extended illness. Elsie was born April 12, 1915, in Davenport, to Raymond and Nellie (Minick) Carlin. She was a member of the first graduating class at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Grade School (class of '29) and later graduated from Davenport High School. Elsie married George L. Hirstein on June 15, 1941, in Davenport. Mr. Hirstein preceded her in death last June. After graduation, Mrs. Hirstein worked for her father at Moskin's Clothing in Moline and later pursued retail clothing management positions with Hecht's and Lou-Marge's in the Village Shopping Center in Davenport. Elsie was a very caring and generous individual. She was proud of the fact that she was awarded the 1,000 hour volunteer pin with Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. Elsie had a love and talent for music. She was an accomplished pianist. Her musical talent could best be summarized by stating she had something that could not be taught. It was through music that she met her husband and later became a member of the George Hirstein Orchestra. Elsie took great pride in reminiscing how her grandfather, William Patrick Carlin, was involved in building St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. She enjoyed a charismatic life full of optimism and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading and walking her dog, "Tinker." She was a wonderful mother and a great friend. She will be dearly missed by those who knew her, especially her family. Memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Gulasy; a son, Dan; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Hirstein; a son-in-law, Richard Gulasy; grandchildren, Kathryn Hirstein, Kimberly Hirstein and Christine Gulasy, all of Davenport.

LaKeel Stengel
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for LaKeel Stengel, of 2213 24th St., will be 10 a.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park. Visitation is 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Stengel died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, Melrose Park, Ill. LaKeel Wistedt was born March 5, 1915, in Moline, to Keel and Emma (VanDaele) Wistedt. She married John R. Stengel Jr. on Sept. 24, 1937, in Preston, Iowa. He died Feb. 11, 1985. Mrs. Stengel had worked along with her late husband at the Rock Island Athletic Shop, which they owned. She later worked at the Ruth Helen Dress Shop, Rock Island. She was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and a founding member of the Allegiance Circle of King's Daughters. In early years, she played the violin with the Tri-City Symphony. The highlight of her life was her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Memorials may be made to Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island or Make- A-Wish Foundation. Survivors include a daughter, Sally Ivaska, Elmwood Park, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, John R. "Jack" III and Nancy Stengel, Milan, Ill.; grandchildren, Amy McCarthy, Matt and Adam Ivaska and Zach, Chris and Katie Stengel; and a great-grandson, Conor McCarthy.

Rose Day Mettler
DAVENPORT -- Memorial services for Rose Day Mettler, of Davenport, will be noon May 1 at Elmwood Cemetery , Mason City, Iowa. Mrs. Mettler died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Crest Health Center, Davenport. Rose Day was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Wichita, Kan., to Loran Sr. and Selma (Taeger) Day. She married James R. "Dick" Mettler on Aug. 10, 1945, at First Presbyterian Church, Mason City. She was a homemaker. As wife of airport manager, Dick Mettler, Rose lived in Mason City, El Paso, Texas, Los Angeles, San Jose, Calif., and Saudi Arabia before returning to Davenport. Rose was the first and only woman drum major at the University of Iowa during World War II. Rose was a wonderful and inspirational person. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Mason City, or Ridgecrest Foundation. Survivors include her husband; a son, Bruce Mettler, Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brothers, Loran Allan Day Jr., Davenport, and Lawrence Alvin Day, Manhasset, N.Y.; five nieces; and two nephews. Mrs. Mettler was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Steven Allen Mettler.

Dorothy McCormick
MOLINE -- Dorothy E. McCormick, of East Moline, formerly of Moline, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Dorothy Schupp was born Jan. 9, 1912, in Washburn, Ill. She married Dr. Loyd J. McCormick in 1936 in Chicago. He died Oct. 2, 1988. Mrs. McCormick was office manager for her husband's medical practice for several years. Before that, she was an administrative assistant at St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago. Memorials may be made to the church or Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley, Ill. Survivors include daughters, Marian Keeley, Fort Myers, Fla., and Susan Bronner, Exton, Pa.; a son, Dr. William J., Moline; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Merwin Sorgen
MOLINE -- Services for Merwin "Mike" Sorgen, of Moline, formerly of Erie, Pa., will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Monday. Mr. Sorgen died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. He retired in 1974 as customer relations manager after 40 years at General Electric. He had been campaign manager for Democratic Sen. William Sesler. He was born March 17, 1916, in Fort Wayne, Ind. He married Mary Conroy in 1937 in Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice, Moline, and American Heart Association. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Susan Susol, Erie; a son, Tony, Moline; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Robert, Fremont, Ohio.

Nellie Asmussen
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Nellie Marie Asmussen, of St. Joseph, formerly of Davenport, died Friday, April 23, 1999, in St. Joseph. Interment will be 3 p.m. Monday at Davenport Memorial Park. Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Funeral Home, St. Joseph, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Asmussen lived in Davenport until relocating to St. Joseph with her family in 1949, where she lived until her death. She was employed 15 years as a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward and Co., East Hill Shopping Center, St. Joseph. Nellie was born Feb. 7, 1910, in Canton, Ill. She married Carl T. Asmussen in September 1928. He died April 26, 1977. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, St. Joseph, and the Mother Church, Boston; and past Mother Advisor of St. Joseph Assembly 7, Order of Rainbow for Girls, where she also had served on the board. She was an active member of Order of Eastern Star, when she joined in Davenport on Nov. 17, 1934. She transferred her membership to St. Joseph Chapter 198. She also was a member of The Social Order of the Beauceant, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moila Shrine Temple and Prescott Club. She was a member, along with her husband, of the Belles and Beaux pattern dance club. Survivors include a daughter, Irene M. Remy, Shawnee, Kan.; a son, Robert H. Asmussen, St. Joseph; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and three step-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her father, Clinton Oscar Waltrip, her mother, Iva Lois (Matthews) Waltrip; three brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter, Stacie Oxford, on July 21, 1994.

Harry Johns, 100
MORRISON, Ill. -- Harry A. Johns, of Morrison, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Morrison. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery , Morrison. Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Johns was employed at Kroehler Manufacturing Co., Kankakee. In 1927, he was transferred to the plant in Binghamton, N.Y., where he became office manager. In 1943, he was transferred to the Kroehler general office in Naperville, where he was production planning supervisor and coordinator during the World War II years. In 1951, he was appointed plant manager of the Kroehler plant in Cleveland, where he remained until his retirement in May of 1959. They owned the farm on Lyndon Road, where his wife, Gladys, was born. He was born April 17, 1899, in Champaign. He married Gladys Kennedy in 1924 in Morrison. She died in 1995. Following high school, he volunteered for service in the Army with the 308th Field Signal Battalion. He trained at Camp Sherman, Ohio, and saw action in France and in the Army of Occupation in Germany from June 1918 until August 1919. Memorials may be made to the University of Illinois Foundation and Rotary Foundation.

Harold Conrad
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Harold F. Conrad, formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, in Sarasota. Memorial services will be in June. Arrangements are pending at National Cremation Society.

Bernice Moore
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Bernice "Bonnie" Moore, of Rock Island, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Moore died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at her home. She was a seamstress, working out of her home. She worked for the Argus Santa Fund for many years and for the Red Cross during World War II. Bernice Peed was born Sept. 20, 1903, in Christian County, Ill. She married James Moore in 1921 in Kewanee, Ill. Memorials may be made to Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Survivors include a daughter, Collene Hays, Rock Island; sons, Lewis, Albuquerque, N.M., Ivan, Edmond, Okla., and Richard, St. Mary's, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Charlotte Dzekunskas
MOLINE -- Services for Charlotte M. Dzekunskas, of Moline, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Cemetery . Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Mrs. Dzekunskas died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. She was a homemaker. Charlotte Clark was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Black River Falls, Wis. She married John Dzekunskas Sr. in Sparta, Wis. He died in 1981. Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Houck, Davenport; sons, Thomas Sr., East Moline, Michael and Dan, both of Colona, and Anthony and Timothy, both of Moline; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Hovde, Eau Claire, Wis., Marion Jones, Sparta, Margaret Eddy, Neilsville, Wis., and Elizabeth Hanger, Hearland, Wis.; and a brother, Andy Clark, Waukehsa, Wis.

Leonard Roling
CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Leonard H. Roling, of Thornton, Colo., formerly of Clinton, will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery . Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Friday at Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory, with a vigil at 5 p.m. Mr. Roling died April 15, 1999, in Northglenn, Colo. He was employed many years as a cost accountant at Nabisco Foods, Clinton. He was born Feb. 4, 1922, in Clinton. He married Dorothy Jordan in 1942 in Clinton. She died in 1988. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Survivors include daughters, Gloria Koepp, Thornton, Norma Schlotfeldt, Colorado Springs, and Cheryl Hentz, Tucson, Ariz.; sons, Dennis, Denver, Michael, Tucson, and Paul, Clinton; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Bartels, and Marilyn Roling, both of Clinton; and brothers, Robert, Clinton, Duane, Laurel, Md., and Vern, Davenport.

Richard Lohse
CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Richard K. Lohse, of Clinton, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery . Visitation is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Lohse died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. He was employed as a millwright at Clinton Corn Processing and later as a machine repairman at Deere & Co. He was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Rock Island. He married Viola Roggendorf in 1946 in Clinton. He married Mary Robinette in 1954 in Valdosta, Ga. She died in 1997. He served with the Navy on the USS Holder. Memorials may be made to Clinton Humane Society. Survivors include daughters, Sandra Van Zandt, Bettendorf, and Katherine Grell, Davenport; a stepson, Ernest "Bill" Hughes, Fairland, Okla. ; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
