DAVENPORT -- Services for Martha H. Negus, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Mrs. Negus died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Manor Care Health Center, Davenport. Martha Finch was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Davenport. She married Julius Negus Sr. 1935 in Davenport. He died in 1983. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Survivors include daughters, Margaret Negus, Davenport, and Beverly Winquist, Niles, Mich.; sons, George, Wilton, Iowa, and Julius, Walcott, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Rieck, and a brother, George Finch, both of Davenport.

William Maley
CAPITOLA, Calif. -- Services for William E. Maley, of Capitola, formerly of Davenport, were April 17 at First Baptist Church, San Lorenzo Valley. Military services were conducted by the Alameda U.S. Coast Guard station. His ashes were scattered at sea. Mr. Maley died April 8, 1999, in Capitola. He retired in 1973 after 33 years in government service. He joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration team at Rocketdyne, Canoga Park, in 1961. He worked in the quality control engineering department. He began his career in 1938 at the Rock Island Arsenal. After retirement, he sold real estate and later sold car mechanics manuals. He was born April 21, 1918, in Davenport. He married Rosemary Williams in 1941 in Davenport. During World War II, he served with the Coast Guard aboard the cutter Hermes. Memorials may be made to Mainstream, Homes and Jobs for People with Developmental Disabilities, 2510 Rosedale Ave., Soquel, CA, 95073. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nancy Reich, Ben Lomond; a son, William M., Santa Cruz; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Herbert, Davenport.

LaVonne Mangels
ELDRIDGE, Iowa -- Memorial services for LaVonne J. Mangels, of Eldridge, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Eldridge. The body will be cremated. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery , Davenport. Mrs. Mangels died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. She was employed most recently as an attendant at the entry station of Scott County Park and at D & J Petting Zoo in Davenport. Before that, she was employed as a stenographer at Palmer College, Davenport. LaVonne Schroeder was born April 14, 1934, in Davenport. She married Edwin Mangels in 1955 in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Dawn Green, Grand Mound; a son, Ross, Davenport; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Josephine Blunt
PRINCETON, Iowa -- Josephine Blunt, of East Moline, formerly of Princeton, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at River Park Health Care Center, East Moline. No visitation will be held. The body was cremated. Private inurnment will be today in Oak Ridge Cemetery , Princeton. Nelson Funeral Home, LeClaire, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Blunt was employed as a seamstress and had been a home health-care provider. She was born July 16, 1918, in Avon, Ill. She married Phillip Blunt in 1937 in Burlington, Iowa. He died in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Wolf, Fort Worth, Texas; a son, William "Bill," Princeton; a half sister, Margee Schwenn, LeClaire; and half brothers, Don Simmons, Alpha, Ill., and John Simmons, Abingdon, Ill.

Grace Berglund
ALEDO, Ill. -- Grace S. Berglund, of Aledo, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Mercer County Nursing Home in Aledo. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Aledo Cemetery . The Rev. Michael Kincaid of the First Baptist Church in Aledo will officiate. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo, where memorials may be left for the First Baptist Church, Mercer County YMCA or Mercer County Nursing Home. Grace was born June 2, 1907, in Indianola, Iowa, a daughter of John Wray and Martha Jane Laird Selver. She attended Winter Creek Country School and graduated from Aledo High School in 1924. She married Clarence Guthrie on July 8, 1931. He died Dec. 18, 1948. She married Decker W. Berglund on Nov. 21, 1950, in Aledo. He died Feb. 22, 1994. She was employed as a secretary for several Aledo businesses, including the former J.C. Penney store. She worked briefly at the former Rutledge Flower Shop in Aledo before assisting her husband at Berglund Insurance and Real Estate Co. of Aledo. She retired in 1962. She was a member of the Aledo OES Chapter 126. She is survived by a step-granddaughter, Lovana Berglund, Jacksonville, Fla.; a step-grandson, Andrew Berglund, East Moline; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents and four brothers, Ray, Will, Wilbur and Vaughn, preceded her in death.

Paul Viniard
BETTENDORF -- Services for Paul Viniard 31, of 4077 Tanglefoot Terrace, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Paul died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. He was employed as a metallurgical engineer at Olympic Steel. In earlier years, he worked at Magnatech Inc. He was born July 13, 1967, in St. Charles, Mo., to James E. Viniard and Leita Myers Viniard. He graduated in 1992 from Scott Community College with an associate's degree in mathematics and chemistry. He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in 1994. He served three years with the Signal Corps of the Army. He was stationed in Germany. He was fluent in French and German. He was a volunteer at Gilda's Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, biking, running, eagle watching and arcade games. Memorials may be made to Gilda's Club. Survivors include his father, James, Buchanan, Tenn.; his mother, Leita, Bettendorf; sisters, Marcia Viniard Perkins and spouse Tracy, Arlington Heights, Ill., and Aimee Lucille Viniard-Weideman and spouse Jeff, St. Paul, Minn.; a nephew, Calvin Wallace Perkins; his fiancée, Marie Hoeger; and a special friend, Margaret Hoeger; and his great aunt and uncle, John and Inez "Tee" Moss, Blandville, Ky. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a sister, Rebecca.

Doris Kochneff
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Doris B. Kochneff, of Muscatine, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery . Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Mrs. Kochneff died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Morning Sun Nursing Home. Doris Vetter was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Muscatine. She married Nick Kochneff in 1943 in Muscatine. He died in 1994. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the nursing home. Survivors include a son, David J., Muscatine.

Olivia Martensen
WELTON, Iowa -- Memorial services for Olivia C. Martensen, of Welton, will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Welton. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery , DeWitt. Mrs. Martensen died April 13, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque Olivia Zirkelbach was born Sept. 19, 1909, in Ridgeway, Ill. She married Carl Martensen. He died in 1971. Survivors include sisters, Anna Zeggling, Viola Meredith and Margarot Boungard, all of Evansville, Ind., and Lucille Mosby, Eldorado, Ill.

Shirley Shafer
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for Shirley M. Shafer, of Kewanee, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Kewanee. Burial will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Auburn Cemetery , Colchester. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Mrs. Shafer died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria. She had taught home economics for 27 years at Kewanee schools and earlier taught at Lacon, Plymouth and Fox Lake schools. She retired in1994. Shirley Wetzel was born Oct. 7, 1940, in Industry. She married Dwight Shafer in 1962 in Colchester. He died in 1964. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or Zion Lutheran Church, Kewanee. Survivors include her mother, Leona "Muff" Wetzel, La Harpe; sisters, Marilyn Huston, Roseville, and Evelyn Yard, La Harpe; and brothers, Robert Wetzel, Blandinsville, and Wendell Wetzel, Stronghurst.

Robert Therrien
EAST MOLINE -- Robert R. Therrien, of East Moline, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City. Private family services were held. Inurnment will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, with military services by East Moline American Legion Post 227 and VFW Post 2056. Mr. Therrien was employed as a property manager and had owned the Yankee Car Wash, Salisbury, Mass. He was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Amesbury, Mass. He married Winnifred Newman in 1953 in Amesbury. He had served in the Air Force. Memorials may be made to Portsmouth Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Dorina Therrien, Hampton, N.H., Denise Haggard, Moline, and Dorise Therrien, Dover, N.H.; sons, Robert R. Jr., Dover, Del., David R., Amesbury, and Dwight, Ironton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; a sister, Dorina Palumbo, Waltham, Mass.; and a brother, retired Lt. Col. Francois X., Orlando, Fla.

Carl Barb
MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Carl E. Barb, of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bridgeport Cemetery , rural Maquoketa. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Carson and Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Mr. Barb died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his home. He had his own business, Barb's Office Equipment, and operated that from the 1950s until 1961. Before that, he was employed as a business machine technician for different companies. He was born April 19, 1923, in Akron, Ohio. He married Marjorie Nims in 1945 in Riverside, Calif. She died in 1974. During World War II, he served in the Army. Memorials may be made to the Carl E. Barb Memorial Fund. Survivors include daughters, Vicki Reynolds, DeSoto, Mo., and Cindy Brady, Maquoketa; a son, Conrad C., Sabula; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Phillip Benton
VIOLA, Ill. -- Phillip Benton, of Viola, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, with military services by American Legion Post 121, Aledo; and Posts 569, 200 and 1303. Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Family Funeral Services, Viola. Mr. Benton retired in 1987 as a machine operator at Montgomery Elevator. Before that, he worked at the former Davenport Pack and Lockjoint Pipe. He was born Dec. 4, 1925, in South Beloit, Wis. He married Ilene Redman in 1948 in Milan. During World War II, he served in the Navy. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patty Benton, Viola; a son, John, Sherrard; sisters, Mrs. Floyd Lenz and Mildred Vance, both of Galesburg; a brother, Robert, of Missouri; and a half brother, Steven Benton, Milan.

Helen Koolbeck
DAVENPORT -- Helen M. Koolbeck, formerly of Davenport and Sun City, Ariz., will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Mrs. Koolbeck died Monday, April 26, 1999, at the Alverno Health Care Center in Clinton, Iowa. Born Helen Marion Benedict in Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Koolbeck moved with her family to Dubuque, Iowa, in 1924. She graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1930 and received a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1932. She was a career librarian, beginning as a college librarian at the University of Dubuque. Later, she held positions with the Davenport Public Library and Marycrest College and was librarian at Adams School in Davenport from 1955 to 1975. She married James S. Koolbeck in Dubuque on Aug. 24, 1935. They settled in Davenport in 1942 and later retired to Sun City, Ariz. He died Jan. 5, 1997. Besides an enthusiastic interest in her children and family, teaching and reading, Helen enjoyed tennis and golf and music. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, and of a book club of dear friends, also in Davenport, for many years. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, or the Adams School library. Survivors include daughters, Martha (Mrs. Thomas) Hayes, Clinton, Iowa, Linda Rodgers, Sedona, Ariz., and Johanna (Mrs. Thomas) Dvorak, Cedarburg, Wis.; grandchildren, Jennifer Rodgers Antonelli, George Rodgers, John, Patrick and Michael Hayes, and Jamie and Joseph Dvorak; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Sophia Antonelli; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Allen.

John Hicks
MOLINE -- Services for John P. Hicks, Oconomowoc, Wis., formerly of the Quad-Cities, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island, with military services by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Hicks died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his home. He was employed as manager and car salesman at Wilde Dodge, Waukesha, Wis. He was born Sept. 22, 1945, in Moline. He married Pamela Liedtke in 1978 in Rock Island. He had served in the Navy. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kristi Hicks, Oconomowoc; sons, Craig, Denver, and Shane C., Oconomowoc; a sister, Judith Siegel, North Miami Beach, Fla.; and a brother, James, Moline.

Mary McElroy
BETTENDORF -- Mary Jane Garvey McElroy, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, died March 1, 1999, at her home in Cleveland Heights. She had lived for 30 years in Bettendorf. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. The body was cremated. Private burial was in Parr Cemetery , Blue Grass, Iowa. She was a registered nurse and supervisor of obstetrics at the former Mercy Hospital, Davenport, for 33 years. She retired in 1975. She was the first registered nurse to be hired at Mercy in 1929. Mary Jane and her husband, Vaughn, retired in 1978 to Corpus Christi, Texas, to live near friends and enjoy the fishing. In 1985, they moved to Cleveland to be with their daughter, Evie, who was, at that time, an actress and director at the Cleveland Play House. Mary Jane was born Dec. 22, 1910. She was a member of the Registered Nurse Association, NARF and Ministry of Praise at St. Louis Catholic Church, Cleveland Heights. Survivors include a daughter, Evie McElroy, Cleveland; a dear friend, Estelle Painter, Cleveland; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Garvey and Mary Tobias.

Elizabeth Dean
MOLINE -- Services for Elizabeth J. "Betty" Dean, of 307 18th Ave., will be Thursday at noon at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 12:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with a wake at 6:30 p.m. Mrs. Dean died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Jackson County Hospital, Maquoketa, Iowa. She was employed 14 years as a waitress at the Belgian Village Inn, Moline. She last worked April 23. Before that, she had worked at the former Nino's Steak House, Davenport. Elizabeth De Wispelaere was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Moline. She married Milton Dean in 1948 in Moline. He died in 1980. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Cornell, Peosta, Iowa; sons, Robert, Milton and James, all of East Moline; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Joanne Carlson, Andalusia, Ill., and Sandra Gluck, Moline.

EAST MOLINE -- Services for Thomas K. Williams, of East Moline, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Presbyterian Church, Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Mr. Williams died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his home. He worked 26 years at John Deere Harvester, East Moline. He was employed as a special investigator. He was born April 6, 1948, in Moline. He married Sally LeMaster in 1968 in Moline. Memorials may be made to a Christian education fund. Survivors include his wife; sons, Matthew, Moline, and Nathan, East Moline; a granddaughter; his father, James Williams, Silvis, Ill.; and sisters, Kim Anderson and Chris Tipton, and a brother, David, all of Moline.

Carol Mayers-Kirk
DAVENPORT -- Carol A. Mayers-Kirk, of Davenport, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at her home. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Kirk was a homemaker. She was born Dec. 13, 1949, in Davenport. She married Robert Ruhl in 1968 in Davenport. She married Albert Kirk on Jan. 15, 1999, in Davenport. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Angela Ruhl, Davenport; a stepson, Lee Kirk, Davenport; two step-grandchildren; sisters, Rae Conser, Muncy, Pa., and Pamela Merriman, Davenport; and brothers, James Ryan and Laverne Jr. and Robert Mayers, all of Davenport.
