Visitation is 3-7 p.m. today at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Mrs. Marquez died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Felipa Alvarado was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Emiliano Zapata, Dorongo, Mexico. She married Agustin Quiroz Contreras. Survivors include daughters, Socorro Gausin, Plainview, Texas, and Hortensia Ramirez, Muscatine; sons, Mateo, Rosalio and Agustin Quiroz, all of Muscatine; 18 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Ralph Berendes
DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Ralph A. Berendes, of Bethany Home, Dubuque, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Mercy Health Center, St. Joseph's Unit, Dubuque. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Dubuque. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, Dubuque, with a wake at 5 p.m. and a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Berendes was employed as a supervisor at Flexsteel Industries. He was widely known for his Stationary Gasoline Engines and was often referred to as "Mr. Gas Engine." He was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Marshfield, Wis. During World War II, he served with the Navy in the South Pacific Theater and in Australia. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1700 Lincoln Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001. Survivors include a brother, Herb, Davenport.

Richard White
NEWTON, Iowa -- Services for Richard D. White, of Newton, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Moulton Christian Church. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery . Visitation is 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, Newton, and 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Mr. White died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Careage of Newton. He farmed and had worked at John Morrell, Ottumwa, and Maytag Co., Newton. He retired in 1983. He was born May 6, 1920, in Schuyler County, Mo. He married Darlene Dodson in Missouri. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Nancy Douglas, Newton, and Donna Long, Mount Pleasant; a son, Lonnie, Newton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Anderson, Davenport, Mary Deere, Bettendorf, and Ruthie Sprague, Buffalo; and a brother, John D., Bettendorf.

Leo Byrne
DAVENPORT -- Services for Leo S. "Tom" Byrne, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mr. Byrne died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Leo Stephen "Tom" Byrne was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Muscatine County, Iowa, to William and Winifred (O'Toole) Byrne. He married Mardell Jurgens on Dec. 20, 1958, in Davenport, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Tom attended Texas A&M. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Marine Corps. He participated in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He retired in 1980 after 20 years as branch manager of Thermal Co., heating and air conditioning wholesaler, Davenport. After retirement, he was manager of the Elks Lodge and then the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the church and Elks Lodge, a past trustee and Elk of the Year in 1980-81. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus 532 and Loras General Assembly 4th Degree, Loyal Order of Moose, Iowa City I-Club, Muscatine Veterans of Foreign Wars and Dixon American Legion. Tom enjoyed life to the fullest. He cherished the time spent with his family and friends, especially the time spent with his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan and a true Hawkeyes fan. Memorials may be made to Leo S. Byrne Memorial Fund. Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephani and Kevin Lynch, Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Katherine Byrne, Davenport; grandchildren, Justin, Ryan and Shannon Lynch, all of Lexington; brothers, Emmet "Mick" Byrne, Muscatine; and William "Bud" Byrne and wife Ruth, Long Grove, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, James and Robert Byrne. May they rest in peace.

Nadine Holdgrafer
PLEASANT VALLEY, Iowa -- Memorial services for Nadine Parsons Holdgrafer, of Pleasant Valley, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Holdgrafer died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at her home, after a brief illness. Nadine's talent as a creative and skillful cook brought various catering opportunities and much pleasure to her family. She also formerly owned and operated her own restaurant in Pleasant Valley. Nadine Parsons was born April 29, 1936, in Buffalo, to Alpha and Helen (Barnett) Parsons. Nadine was a devoted advocate of animal rights and was a member of Scott County Humane Society. She had a beloved pet, Luci. Memorials may be made to Scott County Humane Society. Survivors include daughters, Bobbie Gillam, Bettendorf, Becky Noyd, Bettendorf, Debbie Hughes, Davenport, and Jeanine Slyter, Blue Grass; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her mother, Helen Twing, Kewanee, Ill. She was preceded in death by her father and brothers, Robert and Richard Parsons.

Paul Gedye
DAVENPORT -- Services for Paul Eugene Gedye, a resident of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation will be today from noon to 9 p.m. at Halligan-McCage-DeVries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery . There will be additional visitation at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Paul died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, from injuries received in a vehicular accident. Paul Eugene Gedye was born Aug. 1, 1956, in Rock Island, the son of Eugene Merle and Patricia Lorraine (Osborn) Gedye. He married Patricia M. Short in Rock Island in 1980. Paul attended John F. Kennedy High School, Denver, and graduated from St. Ambrose University, Davenport. He was employed by John Deere Harvester, where he was the recipient of a Customer Service Award on Saturday. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and UAW Local 865, East Moline. Paul was very dedicated to his family and friends. He was always there for anyone who was in need. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend. He had a special knack with writing. It was in his creative writing that he could articulate his true feelings, thoughts and ideas. He was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and loved to play billiards and golf. Memorials may be made to an educational fund for his daughter, Jessica, in care of Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, or Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include his daughter, Jessica Gedye, Davenport; a stepson, Terry Patrick, Davenport; his mother, Patricia L. Gedye, Davenport; his father, Gene M. Gedye, Denver; brothers, Greg Gedye and wife Debbie, Ormond Beach, Fla., Scott Gedye and wife Laura, Phoenix; a sister, Nancy Green and husband Duane, Davenport; stepbrothers, Ron Gedye and Steve Gedye; stepsisters, Jeaninne Dyer and Roxanne Timmerman; his grandmother, Arlene Gedye, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marlin Thornblade
DAVENPORT -- Memorial services for Marlin C. Thornblade, of Davenport Lutheran Home, formerly of Manly and Mason City, Iowa, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly. At his request, the body was donated to University Hospitals, Iowa City. Mr. Thornblade died Monday, April 26, 1999, at the nursing home. McGinnis, Chambers and Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is in charge of arrangements. He owned and operated Marlin's Department Store, Manly, from 1944 to 1965. He later was employed in insurance sales and at Raizes Department Store, Mason City. In early years, he was employed as a commercial artist at Central States Theaters, Mason City, and was in sales and artistic window design at J.C. Penney, Mason City. In later years, he was senior advocate and former board member of Elderbridge Agency On Aging in Mason City. He was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Mason City. He married Helen Rausch in 1938 in Mason City. Memorials may be made to the church or Shriners Hospital for Children. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Carolyn Keeney, Bettendorf, and Marilyn Miller, Cedar Falls, Iowa; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Francisco Cardona
MUSCATINE-- Services for Francisco S. Cardona, of 710 Colver St., will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Muscatine. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , Muscatine. Visitation is 2-7 p.m. Thursday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mr. Cardona died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Community Health Resources. He was employed as a carpenter and in maintenance for Terry Mealy Enterprises. He was born Aug 14, 1938, in Del Rio, Texas. He married Angela Diaz in 1957 in Texas. Memorials may be made to Francisco Salazar Cardona Memorial Fund. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Maria Rodriquez, Waukegan, Ill., and Maribel Ramirez, Muscatine; sons, Francisco M. Jr., Juan J., Oscar M., Raymond M. and Anthony M., all of Muscatine, and Enrique M., of Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Guadalupe Cardona, of Louisiana, Jacinta Veliz, Del Rio, and Martina Cardona and Rosie Basquez, both of Texas; and brothers, Felix, Jose and Jessie, all of Texas, and Juan, West Liberty.

Gladys Blake
KEAWNEE, Ill. -- Services for Gladys Blake, of Clarksvillle, Tenn., formerly of Neponset and Kewanee, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Kewanee. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery , Neponset. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Mrs. Blake died Monday, April 26, 1999, in Clarksville. She was a homemaker. Gladys Lyle was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Modena. She married Ellis Blake in 1934 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Survivors include her husband; sons, retired Lt. Col. Robert E., Huntington Beach, Calif., retired Col. Phillip L., Clarksville, Steven L., Sophia, Bulgaria, and Lt. Col. Douglas B., Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jayne Shaffer
EAST MOLINE -- N. Jayne Shaffer, of East Moline, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Private family visitation will be 7 p.m. today at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, Jefferson City, Mo., with additional visitation 1-2:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in River View Cemetery , Jefferson City. Mrs. Shaffer had served as an election judge in Rock Island County. Nola Schneider was born May 9, 1920, in Jefferson City. She married Earl Shaffer in 1938 in Linn, Mo. He died April 28, 1990. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Moline, for a rose garden. Survivors include daughters, Sheree Rogers, Moline, and Kimbra Bartz, Palatine, Ill.; three granddaughters; and a brother, Harold Schneider, Jefferson City.

LaVonne Mangels
ELDRIDGE, Iowa -- Memorial services for LaVonne J. Mangels, of Eldridge, will be 11 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church, Eldridge. The body will be cremated. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery , Davenport. Mrs. Mangels died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. She was employed most recently as an attendant at the entry station of Scott County Park and at D & J Petting Zoo in Davenport. Before that, she was employed as a stenographer at Palmer College, Davenport. LaVonne Schroeder was born April 14, 1934, in Davenport. She married Edwin Mangels in 1956 in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Dawn Green, Grand Mound; a son, Ross, Davenport; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Nellie Willgus
MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Nellie Willgus, of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery , Maquoketa. Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Friday at Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Mrs. Willgus died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Mercy Hospital, St. Joseph's Unit, Dubuque. She was a homemaker. Nellie Prindle was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Jackson County. She married Arthur Petersen. She later married John Willgus. He died in 1968. Memorials may be made to Nellie Willgus Memorial Fund. Survivors include sons, Arthur Petersen, Delmar, and David Willgus, Maquoketa; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Richard Conley
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Richard N. Conley, of Rock Island, will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Rock Island, with military services by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Conley died Monday, April 26, 1999, at his home. He was employed as a plumber 25 years at Rock Island Arsenal and 22 years at the former Franciscan Hospital, Rock Island. He was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Hayward, Minn. He married Marcella Flaherty in 1955 in Mason City, Iowa. He married Catherine Hohmann in 1981 in Moline. During the Korean War, he served in the military. Memorials may be made to Salvation Army or Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include daughters, Brenda Somnis, Fairmont, Minn., and Barbara Conley, Moline; stepdaughters, Julie Crandall, of Missouri, and Lisa Milne, of Virginia; sons, James, William and Gary, all of Rock Island; stepsons, Dennis Ritt, of Wisconsin, and Steven Ritt, of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; a great-grandson; and sisters, Lavonne Williams, Hayward, Minn., Carol Conley, Nadine Moller and Carol Conley, all of Minnesota, and Bernice Ashley, of North Dakota.

Ruth Haring, 101
CLINTON, Iowa -- Ruth A. Haring, of Clinton, formerly of Camanche, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at the Alverno Health Care Facility, Clinton. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Clinton Lawn Cemetery , Clinton. No visitation will be held. Camanche Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Haring had worked at Curtis Co. and later was employed as office manager at Oliver W. Haring Co. Ruth Dannatt was born Sept. 3, 1987, in Low Moor. She married Oliver Haring in 1930 in Clinton. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a step-granddaughter, Ann Kent, Muskogee, Okla.; and a nephew, three nieces and cousins.

Robert Van Lancker
MOLINE -- Services for Robert A. Van Lancker, of Goodyear, Ariz., formerly of Moline, will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a wake at 6:45 p.m. Mr. Van Lancker died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Phoenix Regional Medical Center. He was co-owner and a pressman at Model Printers. He retired in 1984. He was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Osborn, Ill. He married Mary Becker in 1943 in Atkinson, Ill. She died in 1998. Memorials may be made to Lions Club or a favorite charity. Survivors include daughters, Ellie Van Lancker, Fort Wayne, Ind., Zoe Carpenter, Goodyear, Mariette McGrath, Dillingham, Alaska, Anita Ziffren, Kailua, Kona, Hawaii, and Melissa Padesky, Moline; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Blair Varnes
CHICAGO -- Services for Blair "Barney" Varnes, of Clinton, formerly of Chicago, will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Lombard, Ill. Burial will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery , Hillsdale, Ill. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. today at Brust Funeral Home, Lombard. Mr. Varnes died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at his daughter's home in Clinton. Snell-Zornig Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge of arrangements. He was a circuit court judge in DuPage County in Chicago. He also was employed in the state's attorney office in Cook and DuPage counties. He was born April 28, 1904, in Stoughton, Wis. He married Madeline Wardan in 1933 in Chicago. She died in 1968. Memorials may be made to VNA Hospice, Clinton. Survivors include daughters, Valerie Kruse, Clinton, and Pamela Srock, Colbert, Wash.; sons, Robert, Sheridan, Ill., and Douglas, Chicago; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

DAVENPORT -- Services for Charles W. Furchbrich, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery , Davenport. Mr. Furchbrich died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport. He was employed as a systems accountant at Rock Island Arsenal. He was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Davenport. He married Marjorie Collins in 1965 in Davenport. During World War II, he served as a captain in the Army Air Corps. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport. Survivors include his wife; and a sister, Catherine Edens, Davenport.

Burial will be in Farlow Grove Cemetery , Matherville, with military services by Aledo Veterans of Foreign Wars 1571. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Matalik died Monday, April 26, 1999, in Phoenix. He was employed the past seven months as a transportation engineer at MS Carriers, Phoenix. He was born Nov. 17, 1974, in Moline. He served as a turrent mechanic in the Army from 1992 to 1996. Memorials may be made to Vera French Community Mental Health and DARE of Mercer County. Survivors include his mother, Sharon Moore, Matherville; his father and stepmother, Richard and Peggy Matalik, Davenport; a stepsister, Susan Lang, Hastings, Minn.; stepbrothers, Scott and Brian Long, both of Davenport; and grandmother, Beverly Miller, Moline, and grandmother and step-grandfather, Shirley and Ben Sproston, Aledo.
