SAVANNA, Ill. -- Services for Helen G. White, of Savanna, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Savanna. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery . Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Mrs. White died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Samaritan Hospital-North, Clinton, Iowa. She had worked for 20 years as a clerk at the Savanna Ben Franklin Store. She also had worked for 18 years as a telephone operator. Helen Veme was born May 2, 1917, in Calmar, Iowa. She married Harvey White Jr. in 1937 in Clinton. He died in 1973. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church. Survivors include sons, Richard and Lester White, both of Savanna, and William White, Freeport; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Eastman, Hanover.

Arturo Herrera
DAVENPORT -- Services for Arturo A. Herrera, of Davenport, will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Mr. Herrera died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. He had worked as a laborer for many years in the Quad-City area. Mr. Herrera was born Nov. 24, 1958, in Mexico. Survivors include a daughter, Lynnette Herrera, Rock Island; his parents, Ricardo and Eulalia Herrera, Davenport; sisters, Leoner Herrera, Leon, Mexico, Estella Herrera, Rock Island, Sara Herrera, Los Angeles, and Cindy Naftzger, Davenport; and brothers, Mannuel, Jose, Javier and Hector Herrera, all of Davenport, and Abiel Herrera, Moline.

Shelba Jean Derby
DAVENPORT -- Shelba Jean Derby, of Davenport, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at her home after a brief illness. Services will be 7 p.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation is 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Additional services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gould Funeral Home, Richland, Iowa, preceded by a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery , Richland. Ms. Derby was employed as a clerk in the Scott County Assessor's Office, Davenport, for 29 years. She retired in May 1998. Shelba Derby was born July 20, 1937, in Rubio, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Sixth Floor Oncology Unit of Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Survivors include daughters, Darcy Gott and Marti Bugh, both of Davenport; sons, Mark Heston, West Des Moines, and Terry Heston, Davenport; and four grandchildren.

Helen Schultz
EAST MOLINE -- Memorial services for Helen Schultz, of East Moline, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Visitation is from noon until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Schultz died Monday April 5, 1999, at Parkview Health Care Center, East Moline. Helen Rozanski was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Rock Island, the daughter of John and Lydia (Moller) Rozanski. She married Archie Schultz on July 9, 1949, in Rock Island. He died Dec. 25, 1977. Helen had been employed as a secretary. She enjoyed dogs, taking walks and singing. Memorials may be made to the Heart Transplant Fund. Survivors include a daughter, Norma (Mrs. Thomas) McEllen, Shelby Township, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Sandra Symonds, Charleston, Ill.; grandchildren, Andrew and Kathryn; and step-grandchildren, Rodney and Donald.

Ralph Weaver
ERIE, Ill. -- Services for Ralph Weaver, of Erie, will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Burial will be in Erie Cemetery . Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Weaver died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at his home. He retired in 1989 after working for 31 years at John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline. Mr. Weaver was born Aug. 27, 1935, in Jonesboro, Ark. He married Ann Trouesdale in 1981 in Erie. He served in the Army as an MP. Memorials may be made to the Race for the Cure or American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife; children, Ralph Weaver, Erie, Shawn and Kristine Trouesdale, Antioch, Suzanne and John Podolak, Auburn, NY, and Allison Trouesdale, East Moline; six grandchildren; sisters, Ernestine Pierce and Doris Davenport, both of Jonesboro, Mary Hoffmann, St. Louis, Mo., and Marla Hill, Conway, Ark.; and brothers, Ray Weaver, Cash, Ark., Dale Weaver and Doyle Yarbrough, both of Jonesboro, and Anderson Weaver, Erie.

Leonard Koch
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Leonard A. Koch, of Muscatine, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park. The family will host a luncheon after the burial at New Hope United Methodist Church, Muscatine. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Koch died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at Community Health Resources, Muscatine. He retired as supervisor of the steel department after working for 35 years at Hon Industries. Mr. Koch was born Jan. 7, 1941, in Elroy, Wis. He married Verlee Kallenberger in 1965 in Muscatine. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lynn Volkl and Laura Koch, both of Muscatine; sons, Jerry Kingery Jr., Watsontown, Pa., and Allan Kingery, Muscatine; eight grandchildren; sisters, Helen Koch, Muscatine, Mary Dickenson, Moline, Diane Fitchner, Eliza, Ill., and Nancy Phillips, Nichols; and brothers, Robert and John Koch, both of Muscatine, and Leroy Koch, New Boston, Ill.

Mary Kappes
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Private services for Mary E. Kappes, of Kewanee, formerly of Chicago, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Kewanee. There is no visitation. Mrs. Kappes died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Kewanee Hospital. She had worked at Montgomery Ward, Chicago, before moving to Kewanee in 1967. Mary McNamee was born Jan. 26, 1905, in Forrest, Ill. She married Henry Kappes in 1952 in Chicago. He died in 1987. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kewanee. Survivors include sisters, Catherine McNamee and Genevieve Heller, both of Kewanee, and Josephine Schafernak, Lombard; and brothers, James, Vincent and John McNamee, all of Kewanee.

James Scalf
FULTON, Ill. -- Services for James F. Scalf, of Fulton, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton. Burial will be in Fulton Township Cemetery . Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Scalf died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Samaritan Hospital-North, Clinton, Iowa. He retired in 1989 after working for 32 years at the Fulton Corporation. Mr. Scalf was born June 16, 1926, in Corbin, Ky. He married Billie Carroll in 1955 in Morrison. Memorials may be made to Pine Creek Independent Church, Polo, Ill. Survivors include daughters, Nancy Barsema and Penny Graham, both of Fulton; a son, Lloyd Scalf, Fulton; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, a sister, Betty Poston, Lumberton, N.C.; and brothers, Bill Scalf, Louisville, Ky., Ned and Vernon Scalf, both of Corbin; Floyd Scalf, Panama City, Fla., and Orler Scalf, Clarksville, Tenn.

Norma Anthony
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Norma Anthony, of Kewanee, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at Oakwood Health Care Center, Kewanee. Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services. Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, is in charge of arrangements. Norma Doy was born Oct. 16, 1932, in rural Galva. She married Raymond Anthony in 1950 in Kewanee. She had worked as a waitress for 13 years at Waunee Farm Restaurant, rural Kewanee. She also had worked at Breeze, Wyoming, Ill. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Survivors include her husband; sons, Gary, East Moline, and Randy, Kewanee; one granddaughter; tow great-grandchildren; and sisters, Dorothy Thompson and Darlene Elgin, both of Kewanee.

Leonard Burg
CARROLL, Iowa -- Services for Leonard Burg, of Carroll, were Thursday at Holy Spirit Church, Carroll. Burial is in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Carroll. Mr. Burg died Monday, April 5, 1999, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital, Carroll. He had worked as a farm implement sales representative for Stan-Hoist Manufacturing Co. (later Bush-Hog Manufacturing Co.), until 1986. He worked as a salesman at Griffith Ford-Mercury until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Burg was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Divernon, Ill. He married Rose Mary Conrath in 1949 in Kincaid, Ill. He served in the Army. Memorials may be made to Kuemper High School and Kuemper Elementary schools. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Barbara Toohey, Bettendorf, Kathie Danielson, Des Moines, and Debra Gute, Carroll; seven grandchildren; and brothers, Edward Burg, Girard, Ill., and Louis Burg, Chatham, Ill.

John Martens
DURANT, Iowa -- Services for John H. Martens, of Mountain View, Calif., formerly of Durant, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Runge Mortuary Chapel, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Joy Cemetery . Visitation is 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Martens died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at San Jose Care and Guidance Center. He had worked for 30 years with NASA as a physicist of Nuclear Lab. Mr. Martens was born July 20, 1923, in Durant. He served in the Navy during World War II. Memorials may be made to the Sierra Club. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Peterson, Jan Mateo, Calif.; sons, John Martens, San Francisco, Tom Martens, New York City, and David Martens, Arnold, Calif.; three grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Kroening, Cedar Rapids; and brothers, Herbert Martens, Fort Collins, Colo., and Carl and Norman Martens, both of Davenport.

Maxine Amber Scott
DAVENPORT -- Maxine Amber Scott, Davenport, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Crest Health Center, Davenport. No services will be planned. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Weerts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Littleton, Iowa, to Horace and Grace (McLaughlin) Patton. She married George E. Scott. He died in 1977. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Davenport; and a 50-year member of Daughters of the Nile, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Davenport, or Ridgecrest Foundation, Davenport. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Patton, Hopkins, Minn.; and an aunt, Gladys Hitchings, Davenport.

Jeanne Cook
BETTENDORF -- Jeanne Cook, Bettendorf, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the mortuary. Mrs. Cook was employed 31 years as a bookkeeper at Walgreen Drug, Davenport. She retired in 1994. She was born Nov. 7, 1927, in Macomb, Ill., to Ofal and Bessie (Bayless) Marlow. She married Elmer L. Cook on March 7, 1948, in Macomb. She was a member of Cedar Memorial Christian Church, Davenport, and Genesis East Auxiliary. Her family was the most important thing to her. Memorials may be made to Cedar Memorial Christian Church, Davenport. Survivors include her husband, Elmer; sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Jan Cook, Davenport, and Ron Cook, Rock Island; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Chuck Mowder, Bettendorf; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Audrey and Fred Robinson, of Arizona, and Liz Shield, Macomb, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Brother Emil Thomas Jr.
DAVENPORT -- Brother Emil "Bud" L. Thomas Jr., was born Sept. 15, 1926, to Emil L. Thomas Sr. and Clotielde E. Carter Harris in Davenport. He passed away at home May 7, 2000, at 3:30 a.m. in Davenport. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday with a Masonic service conducted by Hiram Lodge 19 at 7 p.m. at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial will be National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to Hiram Lodge 19, Davenport. Emil attended schools in Chicago and Davenport Community School systems. He entered the Army on Jan. 6, 1945, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 11, 1946. His rank was a PFC in Company E 364 Infantry. While in the military, Mr. Thomas was a member of a 12-man rifle squad and was an acting sergeant of the guard for 10 months. He was trained to use the automatic rifle, bazooka, grenades, pistol and machine guns. He received the following citations: Victory Medal Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Overseas Service Bars and Good Conduct Medal. Emil married Camilla Wallace on Aug. 25, 1951, in Monmouth, Ill. Children born to them of this union are Cathy J. and Cheryl M., Davenport; Calvin K, East Moline; and Cornelius M. "Neil" Thomas, deceased 1986. He also leaves to mourn his death seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two special nieces, Sharon and Stacey Thomas, both of Davenport, and a host of nieces and nephews and friends. Emil held various employment, including shipping clerk for Hays Furniture Co., the Silvis Round House and later for Tri-City Car/Blackhawk Rental Co. for 38 years. After retiring, in 1984, he worked part time at W & H Limousine Co. Emil took great pride and honor serving his lodge, his fellow brothers, sisters and his community. He was a lifetime member and treasurer of American Legion, Marshall Brown Post 482 and member and past treasurer of Hiram Lodge 19, AG Clark Consistory 68, Davenport; and Bashis Temple 156, Waterloo, Iowa. His interests included bowling, fishing, gardening and hunting and he loved to volunteer his time to various community activities. His parents; stepfather, Elmer A. Sales; and a brother, John W. Thomas, also preceded him in death. Emil lived his life to the very fullest.

Scott B.C. Lennon
LOCHMABEN, Scotland -- Archibald Scott B.C. "Scotty" Lennon, formerly of Davenport, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at his home in Lochmaben, after an extended illness. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Lochmaben. Burial will be in Dryesdale Cemetery , Garden of Remembrance, Lockerbie, Scotland. He came to the United States in 1959 and obtained his U.S. citizenship while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He then joined the Davenport Police Department on May 16, 1966, and served until he retired on Dec. 21, 1991. After serving his community for 26 years and becoming well known to many, he returned home to Scotland. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on Dec. 28. 1936, to Francis and Mary Ann Lennon. He married Jessie Maxwell Montgomery on Nov. 21, 1970, in Davenport. He enjoyed his family and friends, fishing, the outdoors and crossword puzzles. He was a member of the Masons and Iowa Police Association and served in the Royal Air Force in Scotland. Survivors include his wife, Jessie; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lynette Lennon, Davenport; sisters, Gladys Day, Swinden, England, Susan Kirby, Yorkshire, England, and Greta Craig, Wellwyn Garden City, England; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Sonny, of Britain; and a sister, Mary A. Heiser, Davenport.
