PAUL F. DAVIS
Paul F. Davis, son of Burton and Mary (Rupert) Davis, was born July 31 1925 near Clearfield, Iowa. He departed this life September 5, 2000 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr at the age of 75 years, one month and four days.
Paul graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1942. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, was assigned to the 11th Airborne Paratrooper Division and was stationed in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge from active duty, Paul farmed northeast of Mount Ayr.
On December 26, 1947 Paul was united in marriage to Olive Reynolds. To this union two daughters were born, Paulette and Teresa. In May of 1948, Paul and Olive moved to the farm north of Mount Ayr where they have resided since.
Paul was an active member of the Tingley Christian Church for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, Ringgold Post #172 and the V.F.W. Post #1797. He enjoyed a successful farming career as long as his health permitted. Being a devoted country music fan, Paul continued to enjoy visiting Darlington and Redding Country Music Shows. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Mary Davis; in-laws, Earl (Shorty) and Opal Reynolds; brothers-in-law, Bob Sprague and Allen Richards; and sister-in-law Fern Reynolds.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Olive; daughters, Paulette Weddle and her husband Randy of Chandler, OK and Teresa Small and her husband Steve of Urbandale, Iowa; five grandchildren, Rachel Kelsey and her husband Doyle, Becky Coyner and her husband Joe, Tara Smith and her husband Jeremy, Grant and Shannon Small; four great-grandchildren, Brady and Tristen Kelsey and Robbie and Reggie Coyner; brother Millard Davis and his wife Juanita of Grinnell, Iowa; sister Mary Ann Sprague of Lincoln, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and many good friends and neighbors.
Services were held Thursday, September 7, 2000 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Reverends Eydie Stephens and Merlin Wilkins officiating. Musician were Ginny Eighmy and John Allen. Casket bearers were Gary Myers, Mike Mercer, Royce Dredge, Nick Doolittle, William French and Doug Hosfield. Honorary pallbearers were Merle Drake, Frank Dredge, Henry Moser, Harold Brown, Willis Allen and Robert Richards.
Paul was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr.

WILLIAM (BILL) ORLO JOHNSON, JR.
Bill, son of William Orlo and Esther M. (Beymer) Johnson, was born April 13, 1928 in Diagonal, Iowa, and passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the age of 72 years and five months.
On September 21, 1955 he was united in marriage to Lois Blubaugh of Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Bill loved his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandpa and friend. His greatest joy was spending time with his loved ones, watching TV, reading good westerns and working at the trolley garage in Creston, Iowa.
Bill loved life and fought courageously for his life during the short time, after learning of his illness. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther Johnson, and one son Ricky Lynn.
In addition to his wife Lois, six children survive him: Janet Still of Mount Ayr, Peggy Trower of Canton, Michigan, Kathy and husband David Conley of Creston, Randy and wife Marla of Mount Ayr, Howard of Mount Ayr and Roger and wife Ju Lee of Mount Ayr; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth and wife Lois of Mount Ayr, Carrol and wife Beverly of Des Moines and Theron and wife Marylin of Delphos, Iowa.
He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Helen and husband Charles McGahuey of Mount Ayr, Bernice and husband Robert McCoy of Des Moines, Nina Powell of Mount Ayr and Linda and husband Bob Sickles of Creston; two brothers-in-law, Dale and wife Carrie Holtzman of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Bob and wife Helen Holtzman of Tyrone, Pennsylvania; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 12, 2000 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Musicians were Nancy Sackett, Margaret Bickers and Mary Trullinger. Casket bearers were Larry Drake, Eric Drake, Mark Triggs, Rex Sobotka, Steve Oxley and Bob Haley. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Waddell, John Krabiel, Laurance Bishop, Charles Fletchall, David James, Joe Snethen and Ron Smith.
Bill was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr. Military graveside rites were given by Ringgold Post #172 American Legion.

MARJORIE ALICE POORE KNUTSON
Marjorie Alice Poore Knutson died Sunday, September 10, 2000 at Trevilla Nursing Home of New Brighton, Minnesota.
Marjorie was born in Ringgold county, Iowa on December 16, 1914 to Alvin Poore and Kathryn Holland Poore.
She graduated from Beaconsfield high school in 1932. After completing the Normal training program, she taught in the county schools in Stoney Point, Tingley, Benton and Beaconsfield. She also attended beauty school in Maryville, Missouri.
Marjorie was married in December of 1945 to Wilfred E. Knutson in Ringgold county. Following their marriage, they resided in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Kathryn Poore; husband Wilfred; brothers, Edward, Arthur and Dwight Poore; and sisters, Alberta Reed and Edith DeHaan.
Survivors include her daughters, Sheila Ebel and Martha Harrison; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
General services will be held on Friday, September 15, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Columbia Heights, Minnesota.
Marjorie will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Cemetery , St. Anthony, Minnesota.

ERVIN N. (ERV) OGLAND
Mr. Ervin N. (Erv) Ogland, age 75, of Indianola, Iowa died Friday, September 1, 2000 of heart failure at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Ogland was born on a farm near Eagle Grove, Wright county, Iowa on August 22, 1925 to Edwin and Nellie (Dueland) Ogland. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as an aviation ordinance man in the Pacific Theater and Africa.
Following the war, he worked for Winnebago in Forest City before moving to Indianola in 1965. He was a production foreman for McCoy and Kayot Manufacturing and later worked in their research and development department. Following their closing in Indianola, he worked 17 years as a stationary engineer at the Indianola Light Plant, retiring at age 62.
He was a member of the Trinity United Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Post 165 in Indianola.
Mr. Ogland is survived by his wife Susan (Eason) Ogland of Indianola; daughter Suzann Ogland Hand of Grand Rapids, Michigan; son Ed of Toledo, Iowa; three sisters, Anna Trotter of Des Moines, Mildred Knight of Clarion, Iowa and Helen Russell of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin; and two grandchildren.
Mr. Ogland's body was donated to University of Iowa School of Medicine. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2000 at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Indianola. Visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, prior to services in the Fellowship Room at the church. Military rites will follow the service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Iowa Heart Association or the Warren County Conservation.
Overton Funeral Home of Indianola is in charge of the arrangements.

HELEN OVERHOLSER
Helen Irene Fredricksen Overholser, daughter of Andrew and Anne Soudek Fredricksen was born June 16, 1908 in Schuyler, Nebraska, and departed this life as we know it September 3, 2000 at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, two months and 18 days.
On November 8, 1928 Helen was united in holy matrimony to Stanley Clayton Overholser in Creston, Iowa which they had been childhood sweethearts. Together they lived on various farms around Diagonal until moving into town in 1962. Helen and Stanley then worked together for the next six years operating the telephone exchange in Diagonal until manual dialing was installed.
Helen's family was her life. She devoted much of her life caring for her family members including her brother Harry who stayed with them much of the time. Helen enjoyed her gardening until she went to the nursing home. She was also known to several people as their favorite noodle and angel food cake maker. Helen was a member of the Christian Church in Clearfield.
Helen and Stanley are parents of four daughters: Barbara Ellen Tjaden (husband William) of Titonka, Iowa, Bessie Ann Austin (husband Eddie) of Diagonal, Betty Lou McCombs (husband Delbert) of Knoxville, Iowa and Bonnie Belle Fletcher (husband Ed) of Diagonal.
Preceding Helen in death were her husband, Stanley; parents, Andrew and Anne Fredricksen; one granddaughter, one greatgrandson, one infant at birth; and three brothers, one sister and one brother-in-law.
Surviving her in death are her four loving daughters; nine grandchildren: Randy Tjaden and wife Lisa of Titonka, Terry Ng and husband Wing of Kansas City, Missouri, Mike Austin and wife Vicki of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, Dixie Baker and husband Bruce of Audubon, Iowa, Becky Stamps and husband Steven of Diagonal, Lyle Turner and wife Liz of Santa Fe, California, Terry Oye of Knoxville, Tenlea Reyes and husband Alex of Knoxville, Britt Fletcher and wife Lisa of Red Feathers, Colorado and Shawna Fletcher and Roy Davenport of Diagonal.
In addition, there are also 19 great-grandchildren: Stephen, David and Jacob Tjaden, Allyson and William Ng, Shane and Kerry Austin, Amy Schultes, Kylene and Jason Stamps, Brandy Starmer, Braden Westfall, Tashi and Trevin Oye, Justin and Tate Davis and Dillon, Aaron and Megan Davenport; 10 great-greatgrandchil-dren: Melissa Austin, Taran, Adam and Miranda Austin, Devin and Amber Westfall, Devin, Cede, Megan and Brooke Starmer; three sisters-in-law: Vyletta Schott of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Doris Fredricksen of Creston, Iowa; Leona Overholser of Clearview Home, Mount Ayr; and many, many relatives and fiiends.
Helen was a loving mom and terrific grandmother, greatgrandmother, great-greatgrandmother, neighbor and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church of Clearfield on September 6, 2000. Officiating was Reverend Eydie Stephens. Music was provided by Mrs. Claire Newton and Curt Turner. Casket bearers included Richard Hammond, John Whittington, J.P. Whittington, Billy Bentley, Charles Morris and Clint Whittington.
Honorary pallbearers were Randy Tjaden, Wing Ng, Mike Austin, Steven Stamps, Bruce Baker, Terry Oye, Lyle Turner, Alex Reyes, Britt Fletcher and Roy Davenport.
Interment was in the Union Cemetery , Diagonal. Memorials may be directed to the Christian Church or Union Cemetery.
Wilson Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

MILDRED SAVILLE
Mildred Saville of Mount Ayr, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2000, at Ringgold County Hospital at the age of 96.
Mildred, daughter of Edward and Anna Baxter Worthington, was born October 21, 1903, near Maloy, Iowa. She was the oldest of six daughters.
Mildred began her education in rural schools and graduated from Maloy high school. She attended Extension College from Cedar Falls and later attended Des Moines University. After receiving a teaching certificate, Mildred taught in area rural schools and taught junior high in Benton, Iowa and later in Callender, Iowa. It was there that she met Lloyd Saville who was superintendent of schools in Callender. They were married in the Clearfield Methodist Church in 1935.
They continued to live in Callender until 1941, when they moved to the Saville family farm near Redding, Iowa. Lloyd and Mildred were the parents of five children: Jacob, Anna Mary, Paula, James and Ellen.
In 1952 Mildred resumed her teaching career at Redding where she taught until the school closed in 1971. She expected a great deal from her students and many of them returned to visit and thank her over the years.
While living on the farm, Mildred's summer days were often filled with "fixing lunch,"--not just at noon, but at 10:00 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. There was always room for one or two more at her table. Neighbors, friends, preachers, car salesmen and relatives passing through would often end up at Mildred's for "lunch." Mildred enjoyed sewing, crocheting, card games and cribbage. Although her days were busy, she could always find time to read a story to her children and later to her grandchildren, or to recite her favorite poems and sayings meant to teach a lesson about good character. She was a faithful member of the Redding United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was active in UMW.
After retiring from farming in 1978, Lloyd and Mildred moved to Mount Ayr. Lloyd passed away in 1987 and Mildred became a resident of Mount Ayr Health Care Center in 1994. She continued to be active there enjoying Country School, Sunday school and Church services, watching ball games on TV, playing bingo and card games and many other activities, as well as visiting with friends and family.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anna Worthington; four sisters: Pauline Wise, Madge Nelson, Jean Harvey and Edwilda Coursey; her son Jacob and granddaughter Janet Saville; and her daughter Anna Mary Ridenour.
Left to cherish her memory are a sister Gail Rothmeyer of Dallas, Texas; her children, Paula Dimit of Albuquerque, New Mexico, James Saville and wife Marilyn and Ellen Elliott and husband Craig of Mount Ayr and daughter-in-law Kay Saville of Coralville, Iowa; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren including Jeff Ridenour and Sarah, Elyssa and Theresa, Derric Saville and wife Jeannine, Dana Mosher and husband Ken, Doug Saville, wife Suzan and Bailey and Ryan and Angela Elliott and Christopher Elliott; as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the United Methodist Church in Redding with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Musicians were Debbie Cannon and Judy Cunning. Casket bearers were Jeff Ridenour, Dana Mosher, Angela Elliott, Derric Saville, Doug Saville and Chris Elliott.
Mildred was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr.

HAROLD STEPHENS
Harold Keith Stephens, adopted son of Albert and Eva Thompson Stephens, began his life with them on September 9, 1906. Harold was raised on the homestead farm in southern Ringgold county, Iowa and resided there until the last few days of his life, when he was moved to Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
As a young man he attended school at the Red Brush school and was taught by Genevieve Shepherd and Flossie Woollums. He then attended the Caledonia School and was taught by Gladys Stuck.
Harold was a man of the land. His love for nature was evident by his lifestyle. He was a caretaker of both plant and animal life. Gardening was a love of Harold's and he so enjoyed sharing with his neighbors. Caring for animals and raising chickens, guineas, pigeons, parakeets and canaries were a big part of his life also. Harold shared many hours with his best friend, his dog Tammy.
Harold knew the meaning of the word neighbor. He so enjoyed baking cookies or cakes and having the neighbor kids come to share a tune on his piano, a little poem recited by him and one of his special treats. Many fond memories have been shared by those of us here today.
Harold died at 1:45 p.m. on October 9, 2000, at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He was 94 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents and one baby sister. He will long be remembered in the hearts of those who shared his neighborhood.
Graveside services were held in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr, on Thursday, October 12, 2000 with Pastor Ed Shields officiating. Musical selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden." Casket bearers were Jerry Shields, Junior Reynolds, Barton Shields, David Still, Mick Still and Dick Still.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr was in charge of the arrangements.

WILLIAM LLOYD ABARR
Mr. William Lloyd Abarr, age 82, of Altoona, Iowa, died November 28, 2000 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Abarr was born February 14, 1918, to Harlan and Minnie Abarr, at Redding, Iowa. He graduated from the Redding Consolidated high school in 1936.
He served in the U. S. Army tank battalion in World War II and was captured in North Africa by the Germans on his birthday, February 14, 1943. He was a prisoner of war in a German prison camp for 26 months until he was freed by Allied forces in 1945.
He was employed by John Deere Co. in Waterloo and Ankeny as a machinist until his retirement.
He married Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson in 1955. They lived in Des Moines until moving to Altoona in 1987.
Mr. Abarr lived the past 12 years in Altoona and prior to that he lived in Des Moines. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he volunteered for the Des Moines Food Pantry. He loved his church and like to be with people.
Preceding him in death were his wife Elizabeth on May 1, 1995; and eight brothers, Quentin, Kenneth, Emile, Barton, Lyle, Joe, D. C. and John.
Survivors include son Ronald Abarr of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Patricia Bushong of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; son Charles Johnson of Pleasant Hill; son Craig Johnson of Des Moines; daughter Sonia Nicholson of Altoona, Iowa; daughter Peggy Raney of El Cajon, California; daughter Janet Wee of Ankeny; and 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 1, 2000 at Union Park Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. Pallbearers were Abarr nephews, Gary, David, Andrew, Charles, Weldon and Sam. Interment was in the Altoona Cemetery , Altoona.
Memorials may be made to the Union Park Presbyterian Church and Hospice of Central Iowa.
Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines was in charge of the arrangements.
