PAULINE WALKUP DENTON
She was born during the turbulent time of World War I while her father was in France in the farm home of her maternal grandparents west of Maloy, Iowa. She died of a massive stroke in the Methodist hospital in the metropolis of Houston, Texas.
Violet Pauline was born October 25, 1918 to Glenn and Gladys Cordell Walkup and passed away November 13, 2000.
Pauline became a young matriarch to her five younger brothers: Harold, Bob, Ralph, Don and Willie. They all grew up on the family farm and all attended the West Gay country school. Pauline graduated from Bedford high school and furthered her education at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Missouri. It was during her college years she met the love of her life, Robert Denton.
Prior to their marriage on June 20, 1942, Pauline taught in the Hickenlooper country school and elementary grades in Adel and Blockton, Iowa.
Bob's employment with American Steel moved them to Georgia and various cities in Texas until Houston became their permanent home. Their home and marriage was blessed with the births of their son James Robert and daughter Elizabeth Ann.
Bob and Pauline were prominent members of their church, Memorial Drive Presbyterian. Pauline served as church secretary until her retirement. Her Sunday school class and the paint class included her most cherished friends. Pauline had maintained close contact and bonds with her fellow classmates. Several of her classmates attended her 80th birthday celebration and when asked to share some of the past escapades and anecdotes the reply was, "We are a close-knit group and we aren't telling."
Bob and Pauline rejoiced at the birth of their first grandchild Rob, but Bob's untimely death September 1970 prevented his being with Pauline to welcome grandson Keith and granddaughters, Allyson and Laura.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Bob; her parents, Glenn and Gladys Walkup; brothers, Harold, Robert, Donald and Wilbur; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Walkup and Wilma Walkup.
She is survived by her son Jim Denton and wife Theresa of Houston, Texas; daughter Ann Werline and husband Richard of Longview, Texas; grandsons, Rob Denton of Austin, Texas, Keith Denton of Houston, Texas; granddaughters, Allyson Werline and Laura Werline of Longview, Texas; brother Ralph Walkup of Ankeny, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mary Walkup of Clearfield, Iowa, Helen Walkup of Humeston, Iowa, and Annabel Walkup of Redding, Iowa.
A memorial service was held November 15, 2000 in the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. A eulogy was given by her daughter Ann, and friends in attendance responded with sharing their memories and giving tribute to this loved one.
Cremains were interred beside her husband in Memorial Oaks Cemetery , Houston, Texas.
How insignificant the words, "she will be missed," as these cannot fully convey the full depth of the void left.
ARLEEN ELSWICK
Etta Arleen Elswick was born November 24, 1909 at Woodburn, Iowa, to James Franklin and Laura Margaret (Darlington) Barton.
Arleen graduated from Kellerton high school and from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught country school in Athens township for four years.
On April 10, 1935, she was united in marriage to Norman Francis Elswick in Creston, Iowa.
Arleen and Norman lived and farmed for the next 55 years in Riley township. She was a member of the Kellerton Methodist Church, the U.M.W. and was a member of the O & E Club of rural Lamoni, Iowa.
Norman died on January 13, 1987, and Arleen moved to the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr in January of 1990.
Arleen died at the Clearview Home on November 26, 2000.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Laura Barton; husband Norman Elswick; infant twins, Sharon Kay and Barton Francis; sisters, Birdie Billett and Twyla Wagner; brothers, Pearl, Glenn, Oscar, Adrain and Walter Barton.
Survivors include her children Lyman Elswick and wife Carolyn of Maryville, Missouri, Sue Parsons and husband Don of Norwalk, Iowa and Sheila Grote and husband Galen of Sac City, Iowa; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Grace Elswick and Greta Cartwright and husband Jesse all of Lamoni; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at United Methodist Church, Kellerton, with Pastor Rick Hawkins officiating. Musicians were Louise Meadows and Richard Jackson. Casket bearers were Brian Elswick, Mark Freier, Don L. Parsons, Robert Barton, Mark Richardson and George Barton.
Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Richardson, Richard Barnes, Jesse Cartwright, Glen Sissel, Keith Elliott and Ronald Simpson.
Arleen was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Lamoni.

QUENTIN K. "CURLY" HAYWORTH
Quentin K. "Curly" Hayworth, age 70, of Weston, Missouri, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Missouri.
Curly was born October 17, 1930, in Taylor county, Iowa, to Alph and Mina Hayworth. He moved to Clarinda, Iowa, where he graduated from high school and junior college. Afterwards, he moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa, where he taught and coached junior high school.
After marrying Mary Ellen Murphy on August 7, 1954 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Curly was inducted in the Army and served during the Korean Conflict from 1954 until 1956. He and his wife Mary lived in Albuquerque where they began their family and Curly earned his bachelor of arts in education in 1960 from the University of New Mexico.
While in Albuquerque he worked at a variety of jobs ranging from a milkman to selling insurance. In 1966 he moved with his family to Weston, Missouri and became a federal employee. He worked for the Bureau of Prisons in Leavenworth, Kansas, the Department of the Army in Fort Leavenworth and the United States Department of Labor. He was awarded the Distinguished Career Service Award in 1990 from the Department of Labor and retired in 1993.
Curly was very active in civic activities such as the Lion's Club of Weston, bowling and he attended the United Methodist Church of Weston, but his greatest service was with the Boy Scouts of America. He devoted 34 years to Boy Scout Troop 249 in Weston and served as scoutmaster as well as district commissioner including involvement with the Mic-O-Say program at the H. Roe Bartle Scout reservation.
During his tenure with Troop 249, 55 young men achieved Scouting's highest honor, the Eagle Scout. He was honored with the Artie W. Logan Scoutmaster Award in 1976 and the Silver Beaver Award in 1985. His tireless devotion to Scouting was an inspiration for several generations of young men.
Curly was preceded in death by his father Alph Hayworth in 1946; his mother Mina Hayworth in 1974; three brothers, Edwin, Benjamin and Kyle; and one sister Elsie, and two infant sisters.
He is survived by his wife Mary of the home; three sons, Carl Howard Hayworth and wife Susan K. of Longview, Texas, Dan Hayworth and wife Lynn of Diamond, Missouri and Robert E. Hayworth of Greensboro, North Carolina; one daughter Lynette Foltz and husband Thomas of Weston; one brother Ivan Dellano Hayworth of Lenox, Iowa; three sisters, Crystal Gourley of Bedford, Iowa, Becky Morehouse of Leavenworth, Kansas and Anita Hayworth of Mount Ayr, Iowa; one grandson Jason Driskell; three granddaughters, Kristin Foltz of Weston, and Carly and Caity Hayworth of Longview, Texas; one great-grandson Devin Driskell of Kansas City, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 6, 2000 at Vaughn Funeral Chapel in Weston, Missouri. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery , Weston.
Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop #249 of Weston or the Lion's Club Eye Foundation, c/o Weston Lion's Club.
ROBERT Henderson SALTZMAN
Robert Henderson Saltzman was born September 7, 1922, at home in Poe township, Ringgold county, Iowa. He was the son of Bert A. and Lora (Davis) Saltzman.
Robert graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1940. He was united in marriage to Nina Alice Miller on September 15, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Ronald and Barbara.
Robert lived his life on farms in Poe, Tingley, and Liberty townships. He sold feed part-time for Lucas Feed Company in Bedford. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Cattlemen Association, Pork Producers, Extension Council and Historical Society, all in Ringgold county. He moved from the farm to Mount Ayr in August of 1997.
Robert passed away on December 1, 2000, upon arrival to the Ringgold County Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Lora Saltzman.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Nina of Mount Ayr; son Ronald and wife Karen and their children Steven and Amy, all of Corning, Iowa; daughter Barbara Foy and her husband Dan and their son Evan, all of Des Moines, Iowa; sister Blondena Saltzman of Portland, Oregon; brothers Lial and wife Dorothy of Amana, Iowa, and Richard and wife Frances of Mount Ayr; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Memorial services were held Monday, December 4, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Musicians were Nancy Sackett, and John Allen and Alan Ibbotson. Musical selections were "Hymn of Promise," and "He Touched Me."
His body has been donated to University of Osteophathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines.

JEFFREY ALAN STOUT
Jeffrey Alan Stout, age 30, of Littleton, Colorado, formerly of Newton, Iowa, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, in an automobile accident near Pella, Iowa.
He was born September 10, 1970, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Alan Ernest and Joy Helen Jackson Stout. He graduated from Newton Senior high school with the class of 1989 and from Central College in Pella with the class of 1993. He was a resident of Newton until moving to Des Moines and later to Denver, Colorado, in 1997.
He worked as a controller at Vermeer Sales and Service of Colorado and Wyoming, Commerce City, Colorado, and was presently employed at Morey Mahoney Advertising, Denver, Colorado.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and he enjoyed sports, especially ice hockey.
Preceding him in death were his paternal and maternal grandparents; and nephew Joshua A. Swersie.
He is survived by his parents, Alan and Joy Stout of Newton; sister Jennifer J. (Mrs. Gabriel) Swersie of Orange City, Iowa; brother Jonathan W. Stout of Newton; two nieces, Abigail A. Swersie and Rebekah J. Swersie; and maternal grandmother Esther Jackson of Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 6, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with Reverend David Wendel officiating. He was laid to rest in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Central College in Pella.

BETTY JEAN TRIMBLE
Betty Jean (Dowell) Trimble was born on January 6, 1926, in rural Taylor county, Iowa, the fifth child to Irvin Charles and Edna (Perkins) Dowell.
She attended country schools until eighth grade and then attended Diagonal high school where she graduated in May of 1943. She then attended Thompson Beauty School in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated in 1944. She worked at May's Beauty Salon.
On September 1, 1945, she married Donavon J. Trimble in Des Moines. They later moved to California and then came back to Iowa where she opened up her own business called Doll's Beauty Salon. After operating the salon for 30 years, in 1986 she closed her shop, they sold their lake home in the Ozarks where she and Donavon had spent many happy times and they moved to their retirement home in Altoona, Iowa.
Don passed away in March 1987, and Betty continued to make her home in Altoona until just one month ago when she entered the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr to be closer to family.
Betty wanted to be an independent person, she loved her garden, flowers and the out-of-doors. She enjoyed special times with family, loved feeding birds, walnut gathering time and mushroom hunting as long as she was able. She enjoyed cooking and shared her homemade goodies with neighbors and friends. She was a neat person and will be missed by all.
Betty and Donavon had no children but she leaves to survive her, sisters, Mary Stevens of Des Moines, Marjorie and husband Dick Yashack of Diagonal, Iowa, Patty and husband Wallace Sobotka of Benton, Iowa; one brother Donald Dowell and wife Evelyn of Waukee, Iowa; sister-in-law Irene Trimble of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Betty in death were her husband Donavon; her parents, Irvin and Edna Dowell; her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Trimble; brothers, Orville and Iven Dowell; sisters-in-law, Eva Pritchard, Mabel Ader, Mayme Hopkins; brothers-in-law, Lester Trimble, Fred Pritchard and Ralph Stevens; and a nephew Ronald Yashack.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 4, 2000, at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Reverend Pam Farren officiating. Musicians were Ginny Eighmy and Rhonda Brand. Casket bearers were Mike Sobotka, Bob Sobotka, Dennis Dowell, Brad Seley, Jr. VanHoften and Gary Ladd.
Betty was laid to rest in the Altoona Cemetery , Altoona.
LARRY EUGENE WHITE
Larry Eugene White was born December 18, 1960, at Peoria, Illiniois to John and Kathryn (Eyrse) White. He grew up at Hopedale, Illinois and has lived most all of his adult life at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Larry was a carpenter and worked for several construction companies in the area.
Larry died December 2, 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his daughter Sondra White Comer of Mount Ayr; a sister Judy Johnson of Corning, Iowa; and several brothers and sisters in Illinois.
Memorial services will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2000, at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr.
After the services, family and friends will gather at The Still Bar & Grill in Mount Ayr.
Honorary pallbearers are Rick Supinger, Charles Supinger, Bob Malcom, Stan Minnick, Pat Schwienebart and Mike Monaghan.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
JERRY LEE JOHNSON
Jerry Lee Johnson, 42, of Massena, Iowa, formerly of Diagonal, Iowa, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident April 4, 2001.
Mr. Johnson was born August 15, 1958, in Mount Ayr, Iowa to Perry Beymer and Donna Marie (Tindle) Johnson. He graduated from Red Oak high school in 1976. On June 4, 1977, he married Carole Jean Lombard in Red Oak, Iowa.
He was employed by Kraft Foods, Inc. at the time of his death.
Survivors include his wife Carole Johnson of Massena; his son Benjamin Johnson and special friend Dawn Wiese of Creston, Iowa; his parents Perry and Donna Marie Johnson of Creston; uncles, Elvin Johnson (wife Rebecca) of Arlington, Virginia, and Cecil Johnson of Red Oak; brothers, Joe Johnson of Creston, Jim (wife Elaine) Johnson of Dallas, Texas, Jay (wife Vicky) Johnson of Houston, Texas; one sister Jil (husband Frank) McMullen of Massena; mother-in-law Edna Lukehart of Red Oak; brothers-in-law, Robert (wife Myrna) Lombard, Charles (wife Linda) Lombard, George (wife Carolyn) Lombard, all of Red Oak, Mike Lombard and special friend Bonnie Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Rose (husband James) Sparr of Elliott, Iowa, Nancy (husband Robert) Swentor of Carter Lake, Iowa; stepbrothers-in-law Jerry (wife Karen) Lukehart of Bellevue, Nebraska, Randy Lukehart of Clarksville, Arkansas, Rick (wife Deb) Lukehart of Coburg, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, one son Christopher Lee Johnson; grandparents, Neil and Olive Johnson and James and Sarah Tindle; brother Jack Johnson; sister Jan Overholser; nephew Richie Hagen; brothers-in-law James Lombard, Jr. and Joseph Lombard; sister-in-law Patricia Lombard; father-in-law James Lombard, Sr.; stepbrother-in-law Kenny Lukehart; stepsister-in-law Patti Ottens and stepfather-in-law Harry D. Lukehart.
Memorial services were held at United Church of Diagonal in Diagonal on Monday, April 9, 2001 with Reverend Pam Farren officiating. Judy Newton was the organist. Casket bearers were Mark Schlapia, Jim Routh, Tim Saville, Curt Eason, Eric Virtue, Danny Meek and Mike McCormack.
Mr. Johnson was laid to rest in the Bethel Cemetery , Diagonal.
