Robert Hale

Robert Ingold Hale has passed away in Southern California.

Robert Ingold Hale, a past resident of Burlington for 30 years, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at the age of 90. Mr. Hale was born May 22, 1915, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Leonard Olver Hale and Martha Ingold Hale. He grew up in Grinnell, Iowa and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1932, and attended Annapolis Naval Academy. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa, graduating in 1937 with Honors as a member of the esteemed Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society. Robert married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Molsberry in 1935 and they were married nearly 60 years at the time of her death in 1994.

Mr. Hale had an enthusiasm for aviation his entire life. He originated the Flying Club at the University of Iowa with a rebuilt glider flown behind a Cadillac driven on a dirt road near Iowa City, the Club's inaugural flight. He went to work after graduation for Glen L. Martin, in Middle River, Md. This plant was the origin of Martin Marietta Corporation and later became Lockheed Martin. During WWII he assisted in designing and building the B–26 Martin Marauder Bomber. He noted later in life that some of the B–26 wings were built in Burlington at the current Case Plant. He also worked with many of the engineers and pioneers in the American aerospace industry throughout his career in aviation: William Boeing, Donald Douglas, founder of Douglas Aircraft, and Lawrence Bell, Bell Helicopters. In 1942 Hale went to work for Transcontinental & Western Air Express, and was working at the Burbank Plant when that Airline was purchased and converted to passenger carriers by Howard Hughes, and renamed Trans World Airlines. In 1950 Hale became a partner in Booz, Allen & Hamilton, a world renowned consulting firm in Chicago, Ill., as a strategist and technology consultant. During this time he was participating in research and development for the U.S. Military's future military aviation, and jet and rocket engines.

Robert Hale eventually returned to his roots in Iowa, and moved his family to Burlington in 1963. He began his life in Burlington as Manufacturing Manager at J.I. Case Co., and in 1967 became the General Manager of the Burlington Plant which manufactured earth moving and construction equipment, loaders and backhoes. He had always attributed the success of the Burlington Case plant during those years to the employees and team members around him. He retired from J.I. Case Co. in 1983 and continued to live in Burlington until 1994. Bob and Helen spent many weeks driving across the US and to Mexico in motor homes, visiting family, past acquaintances. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, built model and lightweight airplanes, and was an active member of the Burlington Golf Club. Robert Hale was also a community leader, and served on the Board of the Burlington Bank & Trust, Burlington Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, Burlington Golf Club, Burlington Memorial Hospital, and the Iowa Manufacturers Association. He also continued to support the University of Iowa, and served on the Board of Examiners of the U of I Engineering College. All who knew and worked with Mr. Hale spoke of his integrity and genuine concern for others, in the work place, the community and among those who he considered his many friends.

Robert Hale moved to Sun City, Ca, in 1996, and lived there until his death. During these years he traveled, learned ballroom dancing, flew a glider again, and attended granddaughters' and grandson's weddings, while watching his great–grandchildren begin their lives in this loving family.

Mr. Hale is survived by three adult children and a large extended family: son, James R. Hale, of Naperville, Il; daughter, Janice Messer, of Canyon Lake, Ca., and daughter, Dr. Jean E. Hale, of Gold Beach, Or. He was predeceased by a third daughter, Nancy Hale. His sister, Martha May Hale Agar, lives in Green Valley, Az., with her children and grandchildren, and there are nieces and nephews throughout the country. His sister–in–law, Constance Molsberry, still resides in Grinnell. He had 5 grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren. All will miss him and remember his humor and gentleness with love and affection.

Mr. Hale's ashes will be inurned in Grinnell's Hazelwood Cemetery , alongside of his wife, and parents, and grandparents. A small family graveside service will be held later in the spring.
