Roberta J. Bliesener, 81, of Burlington died at 11:40 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2006, at her residence.

Born December 18, 1924 in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of Dale D. and Edna Weinrich Gabeline. On November 18, 1947 she married Ronald G. Bliesener in Burlington. He died January 14, 2005.

Mrs. Bliesener was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a telephone operator at the Hawk Eye and then became a homemaker. After her children went to school, she worked at Sunnyside School for 25 years, first as a teacher’s aide then as the secretary to the principal.

She was a member of First United Church of Christ and King’s Daughters. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, sewing, gardening, flowers – especially red roses, and red birds. She loved their cabin on the river.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry (Debbie) Bliesener, Richard (Kay) Bliesener, and Bob Bliesener all of Burlington; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Donna) Gabeline of Morning Sun; one sister, JoAnn (John) Waters of North Fork, California.

Her husband; son, Ronald “Tom” Bliesener; parents; and two sisters, Katherine Hundt and Evelyn Jarvis preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.

Paul Richard Boline
June 30, 1929 - July 27, 2006

Paul Richard Boline, 77, of West Burlington died shortly after 9:00 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

Born June 30, 1929, in Pleasant Grove, he was the son of Alfred and Vesta Hummer Boline.

Mr. Boline retired after 20 years service in the United States Army in 1967. After returning to West Burlington with his wife Hazel, he worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, was a truck driver for Chittenden and Eastman and a bus driver for Continental Trailways and for the Burlington Bees. He was also co-owner of the B&D Lounge in West Burlington and in more recent years worked for the Catfish Bend Casino as a courtesy driver.

He was a member of Moose Lodge #579, Burlington Aerie #150 Fraternal Order of Eagles, and AMVETS.

Survivors include three children, Terry Boline of Burlington, Guy Boline of San Antonio, Texas and Vanessa Paradeis of Weaver, Alabama; grandchildren; great grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Johnson of West Burlington and Vera Stanturf of Sperry; two nephews, Larry Johnson of West Burlington and Donald Johnson of Burlington; two nieces, Linda Johnson and Mary Ann Brown both of West Burlington and their families.

His wife and parents preceded him in death.

Ella Mae Boltz
April 30, 1917 - November 2, 2006

Ella Mae Boltz, 89, of Burlington, Iowa, died Thursday, November 2, 2006, at her residence.

Born April 30, 1917 in Edina, Missouri, she was the daughter of Charley and Mary Kiesow Baker. On January 6, 1942 she married George E. Boltz in Edina. He died July 24, 1968.

Mrs. Boltz was a 1935 graduate of Edina (Missouri) High School and attended college in Kirksville, Missouri. She retired in 1988 after 23 years as first deputy to the Des Moines County Recorder.

Mrs. Boltz was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church since 1954. She was a member of the Des Moines County Democratic Committee and inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1988. Mrs. Boltz was also a member of the Ladies of the Moose, and nominated as an International Co-Worker of the Year in 2003.

Mrs. Boltz enjoyed dancing, fishing, gardening, cooking and reading.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Todd of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Kieran (Stefanie) Todd of Plattsmouth and Kristi Todd of LaVista, Nebraska; one great granddaughter, Ireland Ciara Todd; and one sister, Francille Kilbride of Mediapolis, Iowa.
Her husband; parents; and three brothers, Lorraine Baker, Loyd Baker and Ralph Baker preceded her in death.

John Eugene Bragg, Sr.
December 27, 1932 - August 9, 2006

John Eugene Bragg, Sr., 73, of rural Lomax, Illinois, died at 2:24 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born December 27, 1932 in Iowa City, he was the son of Fred Morris and Mae Bryant Bragg. On December 29, 1953 he married Alice Irene Lennox in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Mr. Bragg was a Marine veteran of the Korean War serving for six years and was a sergeant. He worked as a mechanic and a truck driver for many years retiring in 1992.

He was of the Nazarene faith and a member of Teamsters Union. He loved his horses, hunting, fishing, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Irene Bragg of rural Lomax; three sons, John E. Bragg, Jr. and William “Bill” L. Bragg both of Burlington and Rodney A. Bragg of Earlham; three daughters, Roberta S. Ferguson of Burlington, Shawna L. Evans of Dallas City, Illinois and Tammy K. Grisham of Lomax; 19 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

His parents; two brothers, Frank Bragg and Maynard Bragg; and three sisters, Helen Jaeger, Martha Ray and Cleda Cuppy preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.

According to Mr. Bragg’s wishes, his body will be cremated following the funeral service.

Gladys Isabel Brandt, 102, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mediapolis, Iowa. Born January 29, 1905 she was the daughter of John Berryhill and Mollie Bowman Leffler of rural West Burlington. She was a lifetime resident of Des Moines County. On July 31, 1931, she married LeRoy William Brandt in Monmouth, Illinois.

Mrs. Brandt was a 1923 graduate of Burlington High School. She taught at Spring Creek, Hunter, and Buena Vista rural schools, and at St. Patrick’s and St. Mary’s schools. She received a teaching certificate from Iowa Wesleyan College. She retired in 1967, the same year her husband retired from the CB&Q Railroad Shops in West Burlington.

She was a member of the Des Moines County Retired Teachers Association and the Burlington Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She was active within her church. She enjoyed playing bridge, scrabble and playing the piano. She thoroughly loved teaching and enjoyed giving piano lessons and taking care of her yard.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Mollie Brandt of Bethesda, Maryland and Judy Marlene (David) Amenell of West Burlington; one son, Robert LeRoy (Carol) Brandt of rural Burlington; five grandsons, Dale Brandt of Central City, Iowa, Richard Brandt of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Steve Brandt of Burlington, Mark Brandt of Lenexa, Kansas and Matt Brandt of Des Moines, Iowa; one granddaughter, Barbara Heim of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; two great grandsons, Austin Heim of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Kolton Brandt of Central City, Iowa; and one great granddaughter, Alela Heim of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

Her husband LeRoy preceded her in death on November 27, 1983. Also preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters and five brothers.

Dorothy Katherine Breuer
January 17, 1917 - March 13, 2006

Dorothy Katherine Breuer, of the Klein Center, went to be with her Lord Jesus on March 13, 2006. Dorothy was reunited in Heaven with her husband of 50 years, Glenn Breuer, who left this earth on June 24, 1990.

Dorothy was born on January 7, 1917, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the daughter of Swedish immigrants, Gustaf and Elizabeth Thaleen Linden. Dorothy graduated from Burlington High School in 1934. She married Glenn Breuer on September 3, 1938.

Dorothy worked at Carson Pirie Scott ready to wear for 10 years and became one of the first employees of Younkers when the store opened in Fairway Center where she was manager of ready to wear for over 24 years.

Her church has been at the center of Dorothy’s life. She taught Sunday school to 4 and 5 year olds for over 40 years at Woodlawn Avenue Baptist and then West Avenue Baptist Church. She was the oldest and longest member of her Church for 87 years. She also sang in the choir and volunteered with Christian Women’s Club. She was a regular volunteer at the Klein Center every Monday for 16 years and volunteered at the Great River Medical Center Gift Shop for 16 years.

Dorothy is survived by her four children, Bill (Ethel, deceased) Breuer of Atlanta, Georgia, Judy (Robert) Faeth of Springfield, Illinois and Karen (Gary) Timmerman and Bob (Kathy) Breuer, both of Burlington.

Dorothy is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Eric Breuer of Columbus, Ohio, Adam Breuer of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Sarah Breuer of Atlanta, Georgia; Anthony Faeth of Springfield, Illinois, Robert Faeth of Boise, Idaho, and Sarah Faeth and Joy Faeth both of Springfield; Douglas Timmerman of Parker, Colorado, Julie Timmerman Denmeade of Miami, Florida and Kindal Timmerman Glasgow of Burlington; and Jennifer Breuer of Davenport, Christopher Breuer of Burlington and Elizabeth Breuer of Iowa City.

Dorothy is also survived by 19 Great Grandchildren, Brandon, Haleigh and Cameron Breuer; Rayne and Jacob Breuer; Anthony, Christina and Joel Faeth; Rachel, Jonathan and Daniel Faeth; Elizabeth, Luke, Quentin and Max Timmerman; Megan and Zachary Denmeade; Kayla and Karli Glasgow. A younger sister, May Ann Eccles of Burlington; sisters-in-law, Leona Weaver, Bonnie Darrah and Verna Hollenrake; and many nieces and nephews survive her.

Dorothy Breuer was preceded in death by her older brothers, Vincent, August and Gordon Linden and by a sister, Siema Goble.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be given in Dorothy’s name to her beloved West Avenue Baptist Church.

Our mother made her memorial plans well in advance and wishes her passing to be a celebration of her life and the joyous reunion with her husband and her Lord.
