EDWIN R. "ED" POORE
Ed passed away peacefully on October 3, 1999 having spent his last day with friends and family.
Ed was born November 5, 1934 to Alvin and Katie Poore in Beaconsfield, Iowa. He spent his youth in Iowa farming, working many jobs and playing varsity football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from high school in 1953 and studied for a year at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
After serving two years in the army, Ed obtained his bachelor of science and masters degree in agricultural economics at the University of Minnesota.
Ed married Mary Margaret Hood of Mount Ayr, Iowa in 1957. Ed and Mary had two children, Elizabeth Janelle born in Hudson, Wisconsin in 1960, and David Robert born in Winnepeg, Manitoba in 1965. Elizabeth currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta, near Mary. David currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
In 1963 Ed and his family moved to Winnepeg, Manitoba where he took a position with the faculty of agriculture at the University of Manitoba. Ed also worked with the Department of Agriculture where he would have a long career until his retirement.
While at the University of Manitoba and with the Department of Agriculture, Ed wrote many articles and published the textbook "Principles and Practices of Commercial Farming."
Ed was the director of the Planning Secretariat for the Department of Agriculture until 1978. He then moved to the Manitoba Agriculture Credit Corporation (MACC). Ed was the director of Program Planning Development and Evaluation until his retirement at the end of 1991. He continued working as a consulting agrologist with his consulting business, Worth Consulting.
In addition to a professional life, Ed took pleasure in many other activities. He coached youth baseball between 1970 and 1977, was the treasurer at Christ Memorial and Prince of Peace Lutheran churches and was a leader in the Cub Scouts.
Perhaps Ed's greatest pleasure in life was being with children. Family life brought great joy to him. Also, Ed spent a great deal of time with and was a great friend to all the children in his neighborhood, particularly in his retirement.
Ed's love and compassion will be remembered fondly by his children, the children around him and all his friends and family.
A memorial was held on Monday, October 11, 1999 at Neil Bardal Inc., Winnipeg.Memorials may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses, who provided much appreciated care and compassion to him, at V. O. N. Winnipeg, 301-831 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 0N6.

JOHN Washington PUTNEY, SR.
Funeral services for John Washington Putney, Sr., 63 were held Monday, November 1, 1999 at Magner-Maloney Funeral Home Chapel in Santa Maria, California with Pastor William Barber of the First Baptist Church of Santa Maria officiating.
Mr. Putney passed away October 28, 1999, in Santa Maria, California. He was born in Mount Ayr, Iowa on December 14, 1935, to Olie and Mildred Putney. He was raised and attended elementary and middle school in Des Moines, Iowa. He moved to California and completed high school, earning an A. A. degree from Compton College.
In Paramount, California he met Mary Farmer. They were married in 1960 and moved to Santa Maria.
He was employed for 30 years by the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers Local 433, as a steel construction worker.
Mr. Putney was president of the Orcutt Fire Protection District, Orcutt, California since 1983. In 1963, he joined the Elks Lodge in Santa Maria. He also joined Orcutt Lions Club in 1973 and was an active member of the club. He devoted his time helping his fellow club members in the community services throughout the Santa Maria and Ventura areas.
Mr. Putney was preceded in death by his wife Mary Putney on September 10, 1994; parents, Olie and Mildred Putney; and his stepson Richard S. Nichols.
He leaves his long time friend and companion Judy Core of Ventura, California; son and daughter-in-law John W. and Leticia Putney, Jr. of Orcutt, California; stepsons Kenneth D. Nichols of Orcutt and Michael D. Nichols of Garden Grove, California; brother Walter M. Putney of Kellerton, Iowa; sister Barbara K. (Putney) Weaver of Carlisle, Iowa; brother-in-law Maynard Farmer of Paso Robles, California; two granddaughters and nine stepgrandchildren.
Interment was in the Santa Maria Cemetery , Santa Maria, California.

FREDERICK ARTHUR BRUNER
Frederick Arthur Bruner was born December 17, 1900, southwest of Clearfield, Iowa , to Blanche Knox and Daniel Bruner and passed away November 12, 1999 at the Clearview Home in Clearfield where he had resided since May, 1994. He was the oldest of eight children. He attended country school but had to quit at an early age to help with farm work.
He lived in Taylor county, Iowa all of his life and was a dedicated hard working farmer.
On January 24, 1923 he was united in marriage to Ava Greer at her parents' home near Conway, Iowa. They celebrated 74 happy years together. To this union was born two daughters, Dorothy and Darlene.
He was a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church, a former member of the Methodist Men, a Sunday school superintendent for many years and a Crows Hybrid Seed Corn dealer for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ava; his parents, Blanche and Daniel Bruner; brother Roland Bruner; sisters, Bernice Wiley, Marietta Abarr and Alice Whitmore; sons-in-law, Richard Larsen and Robert Parrish; and nine brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.
He is survived by his daughters, Dorothy Parrish and Darlene Larsen; 10 grandchildren, Bill (Sharon) Parrish, Dixie (Ron) Meyer, Diana (Phil) Hegwood, Debra (Doug) Boyer, Jim (Barb) Parrish, John (Patty) Parrish, David (Connie) Parrish, Ray Dean (Karen) Larsen, Paula Larsen, Barb (Art) Garrett; 27 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Sundell, Mildred Matthews and Helen Lyddon; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services were at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield on Monday, November 15, 1999 with Reverend Alan Rusk officiating. Maralene Longfellow and Kathy Nelson provided music. Casketbearers were John Lyddon, Kenny Nelson, Harold Hancock, Darrell Monk, Lawrence Siverly and Leo Sobotka.
Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery , Clearfield.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Clearfield was in charge of arrangements.

ELOWEEN IRENE CANNON
Elowene Irene Cannon was born May 7, 1919 at Guthrie Center, Iowa to Calvin and Cora Ellen Marshall Duff. Elowene passed away on November 13, 1999 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Elowene graduated eigth grade from country school and entered Winterset high school but then the family moved to Zion where she graduated from high school in 1938. After graduation, she worked as a child care provider in Winterset, Iowa until she married Bernard Dale Cannon in 1940. They lived in Bedford, Iowa from 1940 until they moved to Mount Ayr in 1944.
Elowene and Benny had two sons, Rodger Dale and Rollie Wayne. Elowene retired after 16 1/2 years as a phone operator with Contel.
Elowene did a lot of volunteer work after she retired and she enjoyed her clubs. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and the Ringgold County Hospital Auxiliary. She liked to walk and was known as an excellent cook: her pies, homemade noodles and bread were enjoyed by many people.
Elowene and Benny will be remembered for providing coolers of pop and popcorn balls to the girls' softball teams. She enjoyed going camping the 10 days at the State Fair and she loved to have her grandchildren come and stay.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Cora Duff; husband Benny on January 28, 1986; brothers, Jim, Leland, Roy, Donnie and Jack Duff; and sisters, Hattie Fuller and Bell Dickey.
Elowene's memory will be cherished by her sons Rodger and wife Jan of Mount Ayr and Rollie from Ada, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren; her sister Leone Farwell of Winterset, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mildred Cannon of Bridgewater, Iowa, Mick Garner and Mildred Cannon of Mount Ayr, Isabel Duff and Helen Duff of Winterset; and several nieces, nephews and a host of good friends.
Services were held at the First Christian Church of Mount Ayr on Tuesday, November 16, 1999 with Reverend John Brillo officiating. Kathy Wade, organist, and Della Earhart, soloist, provided music. Casketbearers were Jeff Cannon, James Ward, Don Cannon, Jamie Cannon, Neil Bollin and Raymond Farwell.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr was in charge of the arrangements.

FRANCIS ADRIAN "PERCY" DICKERSON
Francis Adrian "Percy" Dickerson was born February 19, 1924 to William and Imogene Stark Dickerson in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He passed away November 10, 1999 at the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, Iowa at the age of 75.
Percy attended rural school in the Mount Ayr area and graduated from Mount Ayr high school. He served his country both with the Army and Navy.
After service, Percy worked at a grocery store in Creston, Iowa for a few years and then moved to Greenfield and worked at the United Food Market where he met Virginia Tilk. They were married February 25, 1955 at the Presbyterian Church in Greenfield. After the United Food Market closed he went to work for the Pepsi Cola Company in Greenfield, worked as janitor at the Greenfield junior high building for three years and drove the school bus for 25 years.
From the time their godchild Lesley Gates, whom he loved like a daughter, was a year old until school started she spent a lot of her time staying with Percy and Virginia.
Percy enjoyed going dancing every Saturday night for many years and especially loved sports. He had played softball and sometimes took his vacation when the World Series was on television. He also looked forward to having coffee with some of the school bus drivers and friends after the bus route and going to the pool hall after lunch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Imogene; three brothers, Burl Evan and Dale; and one sister Fern.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Dickerson of Greenfield; a special godchild Lesley Gates and husband Steve of Des Moines, Iowa; two brothers, Hollis Dickerson of Des Moines and George Dickerson and wife Laurie of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one sister Oma Reynolds of Huxley, Iowa; his little dog Midget whom he loved very much; and other relatives and many friends.
Memorial services were at the Greenfield United Methodist Church, Greenfield, on Saturday, November 13, 1999 with Reverend Hugh Stone, pastor of the Greenfield United Methodist Church officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Janna Nelson, organist, and Mrs. Pat Hogan, vocalist.
A private family interment was held at the Greenfield Cemetery , Greenfield.
Steen Funeral Homes of Greenfield was in charge of arrangements.

MAURICE HENNING HANSON
Maurice Henning Hanson, son of Henning and Lillian Christell Hanson, was born August 26, 1911 near Stanton, Iowa. He passed away suddenly on November 8, 1999 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Maurice was raised near New Market, Iowa and in 1936, he married Arlene Hankins and to this union two children, Sandra and Randall were born. In 1936, Maurice moved to his present farm east of Clearfield, Iowa.
In 1962, Maurice married Velma Leonard Lind. Maurice was proud to be a farmer and a livestock producer. He kept active in the interests of the farm and his community. He enjoyed playing cards, loved to fish and enjoyed the 17 winters that he and Velma spent in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Maurice was proud of and loved his grandchildren.
Maurice was a member of the United Methodist Church, past Master and 50 year member of Noble Lodge #458 A.F. & A.M.; 50 year member of Cornelia Chapter #524 Order of Eastern Star, being a Past Patron in 1974 when Marla was Worthy Matron; Scottish Rite; Za-Ga-Zig Shrine; and Charter member of the Clearfield Lions Club. He had past involvement with Grant township as a clerk and trustee, Ringgold County Board of Supervisors, Ringgold County Fair Board, Board of Directors with State Savings Bank, was past president of Clearfield Phone Company and a former 4-H leader.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law, Donovan Leonard, Marvin Orme and Paul Brummett.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Velma; children Dr. Randall Hanson and wife Carol of Waukee, IA, Sandra K. Whitmore and husband Don of Conroe, TX, Kay Thomson and husband Dr. John of Starkville, MS, and Marla Bickel and husband Dale of Clearfield, IA; nine grandchildren, Brent Whitmore and wife Teresa of Frisco, TX, Jeffrey Whitmore of New York City, NY, Matthew Hanson and wife Laura M. and Gregory Hanson and wife Amy of Iowa City, IA, Dr. Daniel Thomson and wife Cindy of Ames, IA, David Thomson of Council Bluffs, IA, Vincent Bickel and wife Mary of Gordon, NE, Brenda Willis and husband Craig of Benton, IA and Brian Bickel and wife Robyn of Clearfield, IA; and seven great-grandchildren, Eva M. Hanson, Trevor and Austin Whitmore, Hagan Willis, Kelly, Kaitlyn and Tori Thomson; brothers Lorence Hanson and wife Maxine of New Market, IA and Dale Hanson and wife Mary Etta of Clarinda, IA; sisters Dorothy Brummett and Arlene Orme of Shenandoah, IA; and a sister-in-law Rose Mary Leonard of Clearfield, IA.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa on Thursday, November 11, 1999. Officiating was Rev. Alan Rusk. Musicians were Patty Parrish and Cindy Selim.
Casketbearers were Brent Whitmore, Jeffrey Whitmore, Matthew Hanson, Gregory Hanson, Dr. Daniel Thomson, David Thomson, Vincent Bickel, Brian Bickel and Craig Willis. Honorary pallbearers were Glen Larsen, Vernon Straight, Marvin Boyer, Darwin Sollars, Wayne Wilson, Joe Stevenson, JB Routh, and Dr. Vale Thomson. Masonic rites were given by Noble Lodge #458 A.F. & A.M.
Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery , Clearfield. Arrangements were made by Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home.

CYRIL DON STARLIN
Cyril Don Starlin of Diagonal, Iowa died November 12, 1999 at the age of 73 at his home.
Mr. Starlin was born August 2, 1926 in Grant, Iowa, Cass county, the son of Myrtle Eblem and Lester Leroy Starlin. He attended the Cass county schools. From December of 1944 to May of 1946 he served in the U. S. Army in the Philippine Islands in World War II.On February 6, 1947 he married Viola Darlene Dukes in Troy, Kansas. Over the years he worked as a farmer, construction worker and in a welding shop. Cyril and Viola made their home in Kent, Prescott and Diagonal, all towns in Iowa. He was a Farm Bureau member.
Mr. Starlin was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Myrtle Starlin; three infant siblings; one brother Glen; one sister Martha; and two brothers-in-law.
Survivors include his wife Viola of Diagonal; children Dona Tillman of Creston, Iowa, Karen (Gary) Zabel of Lenox, Iowa, Donald (Lexie) Starlin of Creston, Deborah (Larry) Foltz of Mount Ayr, Monty (Nikki) Starlin of Diagonal, Kevin Starlin of Diagonal, Sherri (Jerry) Calvin of Lenox and Michelle (Greg) Jobe of Ellston, Iowa; a sister Bernadine Combs of Clarinda, Iowa; and 16 grandchildren, two ste-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were on Monday, November 15, 1999 at the Platte Center Church, Faith Presbyterian Parish, with Peter Brantner officiating.
Interment was in the Grove Chapel. Military rites were conducted.
Memorials may be sent to the Don Starlin family. Coen-Beaty Funeral Home of Creston was in charge of the arrangements.

BEATRICE I. MCGINNIS
Beatrice I. McGinnis was born June 4, 1911, at Newton, Iowa to William and Hazel (Eaton) Stam. She passed away on November 17, 1999, in Omaha, Nebraska.
On January 21, 1939, she was united in marriage to Lester J. McGinnis. They lived in Jasper County, Iowa and Baxter, Iowa. Lester died on September 12, 1969 and Beatrice moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa in 1973 to be near her son and his family.
Beatrice always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was always actively involved in church functions. She created many heirlooms by quilting, crocheting and knitting over the years. She also did a lot of sewing, crafts and scrapbooks.
Beatrice was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Church and a prayer group at Heritage Park Apartments. She was a former member of the Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lester; a brother Kenneth Martin; and three sisters, Lucille Shafer, Zola Martin and Lorraine, at birth.
Survivors include her son Walter McGinnis and his wife Beverly of Mount Ayr; granddaughters, Kim McGinnis and Karla McGinnis and her husband Carl Taylor all of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister Roselin Enderton of Davenport, Iowa; two brothers, Lawrence Stam of Weldon, Iowa and Lesley Martin of Colfax, Iowa; nieces, nephews and many good friends.
Graveside services were at the Newton Union Cemetery , Newton, on Saturday, November 20, 1999 with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr was in charge of the arrangements.
