RUBY HENSLEY
Ruby Belle Hobbs Hensley was born in Harrison county, Missouri on September 2, 1908 to Lee and Maude (Brown) Hobbs and passed away on March 18, 2000 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa at the age of 91 years, six months and 16 days.
Ruby attended school in Chillicothe, Missouri. On December 24, 1934 she married Lloyd Wayne Hensley in Grant City, Missouri. Wayne and Ruby enjoyed 62 years together. Ruby was a homemaker having great pride in caring for her family and worked at the Ringgold County Hospital in the laundry room and food service department. In 1979 Wayne and Ruby retired from the farm to their home in Mount Ayr.
Ruby was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and served the organization faithfully. Ruby enjoyed children so that upon moving to town, she provided child care out of her home from many families in Mount Ayr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; her parents; sisters, Mary Lynch, Gladys Thompson and Luella Hobbs; brothers, Lester and Bill Hobbs; in-laws, Aubrey Lynch, Verl and Nellie Hensley, Lester Hensley, Everett Hensley, Walter and Bessie Hensley, Vera Hensley, Belle Wilson, Sadie and Ernest Black and Lester Denney.
Survivors include three sons: Donald and wife Edith of Kansas City, Missouri, Gary and wife Dianna and Raymond and wife Judy of Mount Ayr. Ruby immensely enjoyed her grandchildren: Jeffrey Hensley and wife Renee, Michael Hensley and wife Debbie, Kelly Hensley Nelson and husband Randy, Randy Hensley and wife Dennell and Russ Hensley. Ruby took great pride in her great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Joshua, Wyatt and Owen Hensley and Tyler Nelson. Survivors also include sisters, Betty Robinson, Helen DeFoe, Loretta Robinson and Leta Norris; in-laws, Mary Jane Denney, Nadine Hensley and Clarence Wilson and many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 21, 2000 at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Musicians were Ginny Eighmy, Edna Jones and Neva Fisher.
Casket bearers were Jeff Hensley, Randy Hensley, Randy Nelson, Mike Hensley, Russ Hensley and Billy Dean Thompson.
Ruby was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery
in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
WILLIAM LESTER LOGAN
William Lester Logan was born November 10, 1939 in Compton, California to Jack L. Logan and Helen Travis Logan. Bill departed this life on March 10, 2000 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Bill attended Paramount High School in Paramount, California.
In 1959 Bill and Diane Long were united in marriage and to this union one son was born, Tracy Lester Logan. On May 26, 1973 Bill and Minerva Newton were united in marriage in Kellerton, Iowa.
Bill joined the National Guard at age 17. He went to active duty in the U. S. Army and served for two years in Germany. He returned to the National Guard and retired with 26 years of service in May 1996.
Bill was self-employed for several years with Logan's Rubbish Service until failing health forced him to retire.
Though often outspoken, Bill enjoyed many friends in the Kellerton Cafe and Munyon's Mini Mart in Kellerton. Bill was a fun person, collecting many things, going to garage sales, auctions and flea markets. He will be sorely missed not only by people, but by a beloved Siamese cat named Geromino.
March 1, 2000 Bill received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Hall; his parents; and father-in-law, Junior Newton.
Bill is survived by his wife Minerva of Kellerton; son Tracy and wife Leticia of Perris, California; a sister Helen Dymond of Denver, Colorado; a brother Lyman Logan and sister-in-law Lana of San Bernadino, Califorina; a sister Stella White and husband Jack of Toledo, Oregon; mother-in-law Dorothy Newton, brother-in-law A.C. Newton and sister-in-law Linda Smith and husband Bill, all of Kellerton; brother-in-law Ronnie Newton and wife Lenora of Ankeny; multiple nieces, nephews and many firends.
Services were held at the United Methodist Church with Pastors Paul Avery and Charles Husted officiating. Special music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Barton Shields.
Military rites were performed by American Legion Post #676 and cremains were buried in Mapel Row Cemetery
in Kellerton, Iowa. Cremains were escorted to the grave by Mike and Billy Stark. Honorary pallbearers were the National Guard Unit #3654 Maintenance Company of Chariton, Iowa.
AVERY (JACK) WERT ROSS
Avery (Jack) Wert Ross was born May 14, 1919 on a farm northeast of Kellerton, Iowa to Dewey and Leona Munyon Ross. He was united in marriage on November 21, 1942 to Martha Ellen Griffith in Princeton, MO.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Avery; a daughter, Judy Ann Ross Hendershot; his parents, Dewey and Leona Munyon Ross; a stepmother, Leota Ross; a grandson, Kenneth Dale Hendershot; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Kay Reed Ross.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Ellen Griffith Ross; two sons, Jackie Edward Ross of Cumberland and Richard Lee Ross and wife Rosemary of Loveland, Colorado; a daughter, Conne Kay Ross Daugherty and husband Randy of Cumberland; a son-in-law, Dale Hendershot of Cumberland; one full sister, Ruth Ross Feuring of Schefield; many half-siblings including Everett Ross and wife of Osceola, Faye Ross Perks and husband of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Barbara Ross Durell and husband of Leon, Peggy Ross Corall of Leon, Shirley Ross Grim and husband of Des Moines and Wendell Ross and wife of Altoona; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Avery spent many years in farming and carpentry, as well as construction, forming Ross Construction Company while he was in Kellerton, Iowa with his wife and children. From there they moved to Loveland, Colorado where he continued working as a carpenter. He and his two sons worked together in Colorado for many years before settling in Cumberland, Iowa where they operated a plumbing service. Avery and his wife spent their retirement years together both in the Atlantic and Cumberland areas.
Among his many accomplishments, Avery was a member of the Masonic Temple (Masons) and a 4-H club leader in Kellerton. In Cumberland he was a member of the Lions Club and mayor in the late 1970's where he was implemental in bringing gasohol to the area.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, picnicking, listening to country music, and spending time with his family and friends.
Avery was thought of as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, as well as great-grandfather.
Avery and his wife Martha spent many summers and much of their retirement traveling throughout the United States and Mexico. When not traveling, camping with the grandchildren was a favorite pasttime.
After suffering from a stroke in the mid-1990's, Avery resided in the Colonial Manor nursing home in Anita, Iowa, until he passed away on March 13, 2000 from complications of another stroke.
Avery will be missed by many and remembered with much love and respect.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 17, 2000 at the Christian Church in Kellerton, Iowa with Pastor Rick Titus officiating. Musicians were Marie Murphy, Mary Trullinger and Margaret Bickers. Music selections were "Whispering Hope" and "Beyond the Sunset".
Casket bearers were Rick Ross, Don Ross, Ron Ross, Dave Ross, Tyler Hendershot, Charlie Daugherty and Travis Ross.
Avery was laid to rest in the Maple Row Cemetery
in Kellerton, Iowa.
LETA MAE HORNE
Leta Mae Horne, daughter of Rena Harris and Minor Leroy Curtis was born on October 18, 1910 in Harrison County, Missouri. Leta was a good athlete and played girls basketball on the high school team even before she was in high school.
Leta was united in marriage to Raymond "Art" Elmore on July 18, 1934. Art passed away in 1954. Leta later married J. E. Horne in 1958. He passed away in 1984.
Leta was good with animals. She had a talent for medicating and caring for them. She was also a good cook. The family was especially fond of her pies.
Leta passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2000 at the Westridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville at the age of 89 years, four months and 24 days due to cardiac arrest.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Art; second husband, J.E.; one half brother, Raymond Kellogg; one brother, Paul Curtis; one sister, Hazel who died in infancy and one great-grandchild, Aaron.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Renabell and Doyle Adams of Knoxville; two brothers, Jack Curtis of Las Vegas and Harley Curtis of Indiana; three granddaughters and their husbands, Kathy and Doug Balmer of Kellogg, Kellie and Tim Gotta of Knoxville and Karmen and Mike Winters of Knoxville; five great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Shannon, Karey, Andrew and Nathan, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Graveside funeral services were held at the Freedom Cemetery
in Pleasanton, Missouri on March 15, 2000 with Pastor Gerald R. Feulmer officiating. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Knoxville, Iowa.
CLARENCE BARKER
Clarence Barker was born on September 1, 1912 on the family farm near Benton, Iowa, the third of six sons born to Harry M. and Alice (Evans) Barker. Clarence passed away at his home on March 22, 2000 at the age of 87.
Clarence grew up on the farm, attended school at Benton and graduated from Benton high school in 1931. After high school he worked in the orange groves in California, worked as an airplane mechanic for United Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyoming and operated a garage and implement dealership in Mount Ayr before enlisting in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He then returned to the farm where he was born to spend the remainder of his life.
Clarence was a dedicated farmer and enjoyed every aspect of farming and farm life. He was happiest when caring for the young livestock, especially his Angus cattle.
He was united in marriage to Vera LaViece Main in 1941 and their home was blessed with six children, all of whom survive. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, always putting the welfare of his family and community before his own. Many will remember Clarence for his very strong work ethic. He also had strong personal convictions of what was right and wrong and lived his life accordingly.
Clarence was a member of the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #172 of Mount Ayr, IOOF Lodge of Benton and was a township trustee. In the past he was on the school board of the Benton school.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Harold, Lawrence, Raymond, Donald and Marshall; a grandson, Nathan Hunter and an infant granddaughter, Lila Barker.
Those left to cherish his memory with love and respect are his wife LaViece; daughters and sons-in-laws, Barbara and Garold Canny of Montgomery, Texas, Karyn and Raymond Stone of Des Moines, Lana and Richard Gibson of St. Joseph, Missouri and Rita and Larry Hunter of Tokyo, Japan; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Carol Barker of Des Moines and Dan and Jeannie Barker of Benton. Grandchildren surviving are Linda and husband Gary Klejch, Lisa and husband John Han, Malinda and husband Kevin Thomas, Michelle and husband Joe Marchesano, Monica Stone, Mark Stone, Heather Barker, Erin and husband Bruce Brumm, Michael Barker, Sean Barker, Leslie and husband Dr. Ramez Salamah, Dr. Lance Barker and wife Debbie, Stephen Gibson and wife Shelly, Stephanie and husband Curtis Reinke, Brian Canny and Allison Hunter. Great-grandchildren are Wesley, Jordan and Leah Klejch, Jun Hyuk and GaYoung Han, Tyler and Tiffany Gibson, Taylor and Lindsay Reinke, Nicholas and Emily Thomas and Allie Jo Marchesano. He is also survived by a cousin Weldon Barker and wife Lois, several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, all very dear to him.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa on Saturday, March 25, 2000 with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Musicians were James and June Smith. Musical selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Whispering Hope."
Casket bearers were Brian Canny, Stephen Gibson, Mark Stone, Lance Barker, Michael Barker and Gary Klejch.
Clarence was laid to rest in the Benton Cemetery
at Benton, Iowa.
FRIEDA L. O'GRADY
Freida LaVaun Delp O'Grady was born January 14, 1916 at home in Monroe township, Ringgold county, Iowa. She was the only child of George and Faye Smith Delp.
Frieda graduated from Ellston High School in 1932 with her future husband, Raymond L. O'Grady. On March 3, 1933 they were married in Grant City, Missouri and to this union three sons were born.
Frieda lived her entire life in Ringgold county and in the Ellston area on a farm. She was a dedicated farm wife, maintaining the home while helping with the farm work in any way that she could. She was an excellent cook and seamstress.
In later years, Frieda worked at the hospital in Creston and was the housekeeper for the priest at St. Edward Catholic Church rectory in Afton, Iowa. Frieda and Raymond moved to Bloomfield, Iowa in the early 1990's. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Grand River, Iowa and the Altar Society.
Frieda passed away in Bloomfield, Iowa on March 23, 2000 at the age of 84 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Raymond on December 22, 1995 and an infant son, James.
Left to mourn her passing are her two sons, Mike and wife Shirley of Kansas City, Missouri and Steve and his wife Rhonda of Bloomfield, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Grand River, Iowa on Monday, March 27, 2000 with Fr. John Frost officiating. Musicians were Nancy Sackett and Mary Trullinger.
Casket bearers were Joe Shields, Joe Dukes, Ted McNeill, Charles Case, Ronald Creveling and Richard Schwalbe. Honorary pallbearers were Richie O'Grady, Bryan O'Grady, Trever O'Grady, Kevin O'Grady, Tyler O'Grady, Bob Roe and Francis Walters.
Frieda was laid to rest in the St. Edward Catholic Cemetery
in Afton, Iowa.
MARK PAYNE
Mark Payne, age 47, of Rock Rapids, Iowa died unexpectedly Monday, March 20, 2000 at Ames, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, March 29 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa with Fr. J. Charles Yetmar officiating. Burial of the cremains followed at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery
in Rock Rapids.
Mark was born on January 25, 1953 in Maryville, Missouri, the son of Milo (Mike) and Lois (Reynolds) Payne. He grew up in northwest Missouri and southern Iowa. Mark graduated from Mount Ayr Community high school in 1971. After graduation he worked for area construction contractors.
On January 31, 1976 he was united in marriage to Margaret (Peggy) Munns in Ellston, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home in southern Iowa and Oklahoma before moving to Rock Rapids, Iowa in 1983. Mark worked various construction jobs until 1985 when he started his own painting and sandblasting business. In 1997 he started a new business of roofing industrial buildings. In his spare time, Mark enjoyed treasure hunting, scuba diving, hunting, fishing and trapping.
Mark is survived by his wife, Peggy of Rock Rapids, Iowa; one son, Michael Payne and his wife Beth of Inwood, Iowa; three daughters, Erin Payne of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tara Payne of Ames, Iowa and Caitlin Payne at home in Rock Rapids; two grandchildren, Taylor and Jayd Payne of Inwood, Iowa; his mother, Lois Boarts of Maryville, Missouri; one brother, Robert Payne of Maryville, Missouri; and two sisters, Mary Lahiff and Cora Maki, both of Jacksonville, Florida.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Milo and his brother, Terry Payne.
DUANE WEAVER
Funeral services for Duane Weaver, age 72, of Sharpsburg who died Thursday, March 23, 2000 at his home were held Sunday, March 26, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Al Rusk officiating. Interment was held in the Athelstan Cemetery . Services were conducted the by Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford. Memorials can be directed to the Powell Center at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Duane LeRoy Weaver was born on April 4, 1927 near Blockton in Taylor county, Iowa, the son of Raymond O. Weaver and D. Fern Golliday Weaver. In 1932 he started school at the Works School which he attended for seven and one-half years and then the Blockton Community High School. Growing up Duane attended both school and worked on the farm. When he was in the sixth or seventh grade, the area roads were very muddy and he would carry the mail around a mile square for Harlan Campbell and was paid the whole sum of thirty-five cents per trip. Duane went to work for a welding outfit and built up the joints on the rails for the Great Western Railroad. Later he went to work for Famo Feed Mill in St. Joseph, Missouri and would travel to different areas to shuck corn. He also worked for Ray Cook as a carpenter and helped to build the Missouri Theater in Maryville, Missouri. It was while working there he met Virginia Clark who was attending the summer session at Northwest Missouri College. They went to the show and to the Sheridan Picnic Reunion and after that they stared dating. On May 28, 1945 he and Virginia were married in Troy, Kansas. To this loving union five sons were born; Larry, Terry, Dale, Richard and Delvin.
Duane and Virginia made their home in Maryville, Missouri where he worked at Gray Oil Company and later returned to Iowa to farm. He enjoyed all aspects of the farming life, whether it was raising cattle or just being outdoors to work the fields. Duane and Virginia had traveled to almost every state during his lifetime and he enjoyed camping and collecting mini John Deere tractors. However, the greatest joy in his life were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, even the two that are due on his birthday. He was a great father and parent, imparting his knowledge and wisdom to his five sons. Duane was highly respected by those who knew him. Duane was a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and really enjoyed working at the State Fair driving the shuttles around. Duane was baptized into the United Methodist Church and attended the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Sharpsburg; the Sharpsburg Community Club and Assistant Commissioner of the Taylor County Soil Conservation.
Preceding Duane in death were his parents, Raymond and Fern.
Left to cherish Duane's memory are his wife Virginia of Sharpsburg; five sons: Larry Weaver and wife Sharon of Sharpsburg, Terry Weaver and wife Trudy of Sharpsburg, Dale Weaver and wife Treasa of Lenox, Richard Weaver and wife Maureen of Red Oak and Delvin Weaver and wife Patti of Des Moines; a brother, Donald "Buck" Weaver and wife Mary of Blockton; six sisters,: Iona Force of Deepwater, Missouri, Marie Campbell and husband Paul of Blockton, Thelma Johnson of Blair, NE, Fern Leight and husband Don of West Point, Joye Weidler and husband Del of Iowa City and Mary Hildreth of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Carol May and husband John of Mount Ayr; sixteen grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
