VERA ABEL
Vera Abel, 87, of Boone, Iowa, formerly of Creston, Iowa, died August 6, 2000 at the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone.
Vera was born May 28, 1913 to Ethel Moore and William Henry Shafer in Cincinnati, Iowa. She graduated from Malvern high school. On July 20, 1935 she married Fred Abel in Rockport, Missouri. To this union were born a son Ronald and a daughter Barbara.
Vera worked as a homemaker. The family lived in Diagonal, Iowa before moving to Creston in 1972. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Afternoon Church Circle and the Birthday Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel Shafer; husband Fred Abel in 1990; infant son Donald; sister Anna Bartholomew; and brother-in-law Paul Benedict.
Vera is survived by her son Ronald (wife Vi) Abel of Boone; daughter Barbara (husband John) Hettinger of Missoula, Montana; brother-in-law John Bartholomew of Tabor, Iowa; sisters: Frances (husband Bud) Anderson of Shenandoah, Iowa, Thelma Benedict of Shenandoah and Dorothy Shafer of Tabor; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service in Creston with Reverend Gordon Elrick officiating. She was laid to rest in the Graceland Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church.
BETH EASON
Beth Beymer Eason, 92, died of pneumonia at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa on August 5, 2000.
Beth was born just southwest of Diagonal, Iowa, on October 10, 1907, to George Alonzo and Mary Estella Shafer Beymer. She was the seventh of nine children in this family. She later moved with her family to Creston, Tingley and Mount Ayr where she graduated from the Mount Ayr high school in 1925. After completing the Normal Training Program offered by the Mount Ayr high school she taught in the county country schools for a number of years.
In 1929 she was married to Paul J. Eason of Diagonal at the Methodist Church parsonage in Mount Ayr. Following her marriage she became a full time homemaker.
She and Paul made their home in Diagonal where their first son Jim was born. Later they moved to Mount Ayr where their second son Clair (Skip) was born. In 1934 they moved to the family farm where they resided until her untimely death.
Beth served as a Washington township 4-H leader for several years. She served a second brief stint as a country school teacher in 1946-47 as she completed a term for another teacher at the Washington township #9 school.
Beth was a Methodist Church member and was active with the United Methodist Women as long as her health permitted.
Beth's family was her life. Her sons and daughters-in-law provided her and Paul with eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was a hard to follow model of what a grandma is to be to their grandchildren. She remained close and involved with the greats and great-greats even though some lived out of the area. She was referred to as "Grandma Beth" by her own children, her grandchildren, of course, and a host of non-related adults and children who knew her.
Beth enjoyed gardening and took care of it as well as she did children. She felt working in the soil was good for the soul.
Until death came she spoke often of her husband Paul. They were a team. She missed him so.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul in 1978; two great-grandsons, Lucas Eason and Cole Smith; her four brothers: Paul Beymer, Mark Beymer, Luther Beymer and infant Beymer; three of her sisters: Olive (Mrs. Neil) Johnson, Esther (Mrs. Orlo) Johnson, and infant Beymer; and all of her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Jim and Nina Eason of rural Mount Ayr and their four children, Steve and Alisa Eason and their daughters, Amanda, Sara and Kelli, of Clarinda, Curt and Mary Eason and their sons Jim, Chris, Kyle and Korey of Mount Ayr, Mike and Lori Eason and their daughters Elizabeth and Jennifer of Dubuque and Susan Eason of Kansas City, Missouri; Clair "Skip" and Donna Eason of Waukee, and their four children, Ted and Paula Eason of La Crosse, Wisconsin and their children, Hilary and daughter Kendell and son Carter of West Des Moines, Paul and Jill Eason of Nixa, Missouri and Adrienne and daughter Emma also of Nixa, Missouri; Terry Eason and his son Trey of Waukee and son Tyler of Norwalk; Debra Eason Smith and husband Doug and their sons Adam, Lucas and Dylan of Waukee; Jo Ann Eason Schlitter and husband Terry and their son Cody and daughters Donna Jo and Claire Beth of Redfield; her sister Fern Badger of Rochester,
Minnesota and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were on Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr with Reverend Michael Druhl and Reverend Eydie Stephens officiating. Debbie Cannon and Dwight Ingram provided music. Casket bearers were Steve Eason, Terry Eason, Curt Eason, Mike Eason, Doug Smith and Terry Schlitter. Honorary pallbearers were Debbie Eason Smith, Susan Eason and JoAnn Eason Schlitter.
Beth was laid to rest in the Bethel Cemetery , Diagonal.

VERNA CLARA HUFF
Verna Clara Huff was born July 14, 1910 at Villisca, Iowa to Marion G. and Nellie (Russell) Rains. Verna passed away August 2, 2000 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Verna was united in marriage to Teddy Donald Huff on December 12, 1927 in Creston, Iowa. They farmed in Ringgold county, Iowa for many years, moving into Mount Ayr in 1961. Verna began working at the Ringgold County Hospital at this time and continued working there until the mid 1970's.
Verna was a member of the Blackmore Friendship club. She was a dedicated and faithful farmer's wife. She had a big garden and canned the produce to feed her family. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When faced with moving to the Clearview Home, Verna was ready and willing. She believed that they were the nicest people and appreciated all that they did for her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Nellie Rains; her husband Ted in 1968; two children, Billy Eugene and Marion Lois; one sister Margaret West; and three brothers, Carter, Elmer L. and Clark Rains.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Don Huff and wife Connie of Kellerton, Iowa, Carter Huff and wife Andra of Hiawatha, Iowa, Francis K. Huff and wife Judy of Lincoln, Nebraska, Carroll Huff and wife Ellen of Albany, Oregon, Darrold Huff and wife LuAnn of Loveland, Colorado and Janet Mercer and husband Don of Mount Ayr; 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Wick of Osceola and Norma Grady of Creston; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr on Saturday, August 5, 2000 with Reverend John Brillo officiating. Musicians were Nancy Sackett, Mary Trullinger and Margaret Bickers. Casket bearers were Richard Mercer, Terry Mercer, Jake Huff, Michael Mercer, Barry Huff and Willis Huff.
Verna was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr.
ELLA MAUDE QUICK
Ella Maude Malaney Quick was one of 11 children born to Daniel E. and Eva Ashlock Malaney. She was born March 11, 1902 at Lancaster, Missouri and departed this life on August 11, 2000 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center, Mount Ayr, Iowa where she had resided since 1996. She was 98 years and five months in age.
At the age of nine her family moved to Redding, Iowa where she lived until 1981 when she moved to Tingley, Iowa.
Maude and Glen Quick were united in marriage on November 30, 1932. They established their home on a farm north of Redding and lived there until 1955 when they moved into Redding and operated the telephone office. They were the parents of five children.
At an early age Maude joined the Methodist Church in Redding.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Eva Malaney; husband, Glen; an infant son Howard; an infant granddaughter Patricia; and three brothers and six sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Lyle (wife Jeannette) Quick of Tingley, Mary (husband John) Overholtzer of Tingley, Jean (husband Ron) Tull of Annandale, Virginia and Dale Quick of Martensdale, Iowa. She is also survived by her sister Helen Malaney of Des Moines; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren, three step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.
Services were held on Monday, August 14, 2000 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr with Reverend Michael Druhl and Reverend David Rauch officiating. Ginny Eighmy, John Allen and Alan Ibbotson provided music.
Casket bearers were John A. Overholtzer, David Quick, Wayne Von Hagel, Howard Tull, Leslie Rauch and Kenneth Quick.
Maude was laid to rest in the Redding Cemetery , Redding.
HELEN DEWELL
Helen Campbell Dewell, 75, of Ukiah, California died of lung cancer July 7, 2000.
Memorial services were held on July 16, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ukiah. Memorials may be directed to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society or the First Presbyterian Church in Ukiah. The Eversole Mortuary, 141 Low Gap Road in Ukiah was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Dewell was born April 7, 1925 in Blockton, Iowa to Harlan and Vera Campbell. She married Kenneth I. Dewell. She taught school in Blockton and then moved to Virginia for several years. She then moved to Ukiah, California and resumed her teaching career at Redwood Valley Schools in 1961. She retired as a special resource teacher after 20 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, an infant daughter and two brothers, Mack Campbell and Jack Campbell, both of Blockton.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Dewell of Ukiah, California; a son, K.C. Dewell of Rohnert Park, California; a daughter, Linda D. Adams of Redding, California; a sister, Betty Austin of Ukiah, California; her mother-in-law, Lillian T. Dean; and two grandchildren.
J. JUNIOR "JAKE" JEZEK
He was a man of simple pleasures--An early morning sunrise, the melodic song of the robin, a fun-filled Sunday afternoon with family, a music jam with dearest of music friends, the purple martin's arrival in early spring or the discovery of an Indian artifact. These were the joys that brightened his life.
Joe Junior Jezek, known by relatives and friends as "Jake," was born south of Diagonal, Iowa, on a farm which was homesteaded by his great-great-grandfather, Anton Jezek, Jr., in 1856. He was the only child born to Joseph Anton and Matilda Marie (Skroh) Jezek, his birth date being January 15, 1920. He departed this life on August 19, 2000, at the age of 80 years, seven months and four days, on this same farm, the land he loved.
Jake was an only child; therefore, he learned to entertain himself at an early age. He and each of his faithful canine companions combed the family farm from boundary to boundary always searching and finding nature's many wonders. He and childhood friends, Don and Leonard Sobotka, always took an annual Easter swim, climbed the tallest trees and ice skated on all of the local creeks and rivers.
Jake's school days began at Washington #4 Lincoln country school and he later completed his education at Diagonal high school. After graduating from high school in 1938, Jake began working full-time on the family farm with his father. Although his formal education ended with a high school diploma, he was one of the brightest self-taught learners. He was a master of mechanics and nature.
On August 19, 1944, he was united in marriage to Bertha Mae Brown. Seven years later on January 18, 1951, a daughter Barbara Elaine was born.
Jake was a talented musician with an ear for music. He began playing at age eight when he sold his pet pig to purchase his first accordion from Sears Roebuck. He played the clarinet in the high school band and after high school he joined a Bohemian band that traveled throughout southern Iowa and northern Missouri. On any given night, Jake could be found playing a variety of instruments. If he could run a musical scale, it was his to play. He continued to play regularly throughout his life and toward the end, when his body was succumbing to sickness, music became a major portion of the medicine that kept him going.
In addition to music, family was very important to Jake. After retiring from the farm, he continued to watch his son-in-law Jerry Stephens work the land. Grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren also played an important role in his life. Even on the toughest days, he could find a smile and clever response for the little folks.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Matilda (Skroh) Jezek and parents-in-law, Vern and Beatrice (Everhart) Brown.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Bertha; his beloved daughter Barb (husband Jerry Stephens); two cherished granddaughters, Lesa (husband Roger Dolecheck) of rural Beaconsfield, Iowa and Terri (husband Matt Higgins) of Diagonal; and four adorable great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Kyle Dolecheck and Alyssa and Cole Higgins; one brother-in-law Vern "Bud" Brown (wife Jeane) of Des Moines; four sisters-in-law, Doris (husband Bill) Overholser of Diagonal, Evelyn (husband Sam) Sickels of Mount Ayr, Janis (husband Elbert) Sobotka of Zearing, Iowa and Donna (husband Bill) Dodson of Greenfield, Iowa; six nieces, six nephews, great-nephews and nieces, his Czech cousins and his "adopted" family, The Stephens Fifteen, along with a never-ending list of friends and caring neighbors.
Services were on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at the United Church of Diagonal with Reverend Pam Farren and Reverend Eydie Stephens officiating. Judy Newton and Cindy Rhodes provided music. Casket bearers were Dave Stephens, Jim Stephens, John Stephens, Don Stephens, Jack Stephens, Kenny Stephens and Steve Stephens.
Jake was laid to rest in the Bohemian Cemetery , Diagonal.

CLARENCE LENT, JR.
Clarence Lent, Jr., 73 of Lake Monticello, Virginia, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2000 at the University of Virginia Medical Center of complications following heart surgery.
Born in Beaconsfield, Iowa on May 15, 1927, he was the son of the late Clarence and Birdie Lent. He was preceded in death by a son, Lyle, and two brothers.
Clarence was president of Cavalier Camping Center Inc. before his retirement in 1993.
Clarence is survived by his wife Berneice; a son, Robert; two grandsons, Cristopher and his wife, Darlene and Michael, all of Lake Monticello; three sisters, Wanda Creveling of Des Moines, Iowa and Emma Pohl and Pat Brown of Reno, Nevada; and a special niece, Marie Lent.
Graveside funeral services were conducted on Sunday, August 13,2000 at Fork Union Cemetery
with the Rev. William J. Bess officiating.
The family received friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 2000 at Teague Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue Squad, 10 Slice Court, Palmyra, VA 22963.
LETA F. NORRIS
Leta F. Norris, 71, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, August 11, 2000 of lung cancer in the home of her daughter Linda Smith, surrounded by her family.
Leta was born October 25, 1928, in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She was united in marriage 53 years ago to Harold Norris on February 1, 1947 in Troy, Kansas. She was an assembler at Square D for 31 years, retiring in 1991.
Survivors include her husband Harold; two daughters, Sue Michel and husband Don of Fairfax, Iowa and Linda Smith and husband Ted of Cedar Rapids; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Ted Smith, his wife Lisa and son Jason, Tracy Simmons and her son Justin, Tiffany Miller and her husband Aaron, John Michel, his wife Lisa and son Parker and Joe Michel.
Also surviving are three sisters: Loretta Robinson of Texas, Helen De Feo of New York and Betty Robinson of Alaska.
She was preceded in death by a son Greg Norris; her parents, Lee and Maude Hobbs; and two brothers and four sisters.
A memorial service was held Monday, August 14, 2000, at the Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Reverend Ken Glandorf, Chaplain of Hospice of Mercy conducted the service.
Leta was laid to rest in the Linwood Cemetery.
ALBERTA LEE (TURNER) LARSON
Alberta Lee (Turner) Larson, daughter of Douglas and Mayme (Lee) Turner was born July 21, 1922 on a farm near Bedford, Iowa. She departed this life at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa on August 21, 2000 at the age of 78 years and one month.
She graduated from Clearfield high school in 1940, then attended college in Maryville, Missouri. Alberta taught country school for several years, either walking or riding her horse to work.
On December 24, 1943, Alberta married Phillip W. Larson at the Methodist parsonage in Clearfield, Iowa, witnessed by their special friends, Hazel and Darwin Sollars. To this union three children were born, Phillip Lewis, Gregory John and Janice Kay. Alberta was actively involved in their farming operation southwest of Clearfield until they moved to town in November, 1974. Taylor county has been her home her entire life.
Alberta was a member of the Christian Church and spoke often of the many fond memories she had teaching Sunday school. She was also a member of the American Auxiliary, Eastern Star and of the Entrenous Bridge Club.
She was always a very caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her grandchildren tremendously and eagerly attended their activities when her health permitted. Alberta never knew a stranger and always had time to visit with family and friends. She was loved by all and will be sadly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Doug and Mayme Turner; one brother Doyle Turner; an infant sister; one grandson Chad Larson; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Jim Larson; her stepmother-in-law Jackie Larson; two sisters-in-law, Alora (Bailey) Peterman and Marguerite Thalacker; and one brother-in-law Robert Larson.
Alberta is survived by her husband of 56 years Phil; her children, Lewis and wife Martha, Greg and wife Jeanie and Janice Mobley and husband Glee; her grandchildren: Will, Robby and Shaun Larson, Angie Miller and husband Brian, Brandon Larson and wife Debbie, Wyatt Mobley and fianceé Josie Stephens, Elaine and Melonie Mobley; her great-grandchildren: Zachary, Morgan and Brooke Miller, and DeMarcus Rife; sister-in-law Yasuko Turner; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jake and Barb Larson; brother-in-law Weldon Thalacker; uncles and aunts, Tom and Irma Larson and Cecil and Helen Uglow; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 23, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church in Clearfield with Reverend Eydie Stephens officiating. Mrs. Jean Huffman and Mrs. Carol Ann Kinder provided music. Casket bearers were Wyatt Mobley, Melonie Mobley, Brandon Larson, Robby Larson, Elaine Mobley, Angie Miller, Will Larson and Shaun Larson. Honorary pallbearers were Marjorie Barry, Lavon Brown, Dorothy John, Marilyn Schlapia, Verla Dean Taylor, Charlene Brott, Hilda Darst, Mickey Routh, Hazel Sollars and Luella Wilson.
Alberta was laid to rest in the Clearfield Cemetery , Clearfield.
