HAZEL MAE JACKSON
Hazel Mae Waugh was born December 27, 1910 on the family farm near Redding, Iowa. She was the youngest child of Charles M. and Matilda (Glendenning) Waugh.
Hazel grew up at Redding and graduated from Redding high school in 1928. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls in 1931. She taught in Ringgold county schools for three years.
In 1936, she was married to Luther Earl Jackson of Grant City, Missouri and lived the next 61 years on a farm in Worth county, Missouri. Hazel was active as a 4-H leader for many years while her children were growing up. She later worked for Grant City Manufacturing Company. She also did mending for Grant City Nursing Home for many years. Hazel was a news correspondent for the Times Tribune for several years.
Hazel was a lifelong member of the Middle Fork Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years. She was always a willing worker for her church. She was an avid gardener and loved to care for all plants, flowers and animals. She was a loving mother and grandmother and had made a special quilt for each of her grandchildren.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Matilda Waugh; husband Earl; son-in-law Doyle Austin; brother Clifton Waugh; and three sisters, Ferne Jackson, Glenna Waugh and Flora Belle Waugh.
Survivors include two sons, Charles and wife Melba of Clearfield, Iowa and Wendell and wife Joan of Redding; five daughters, Virginia Austin and friend Doug Dewaele of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Frances Fine and husband Marvin of Red Oak, Iowa, Janet Derby and husband Al of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carolyn Shupe and husband Roger of Cameron, Missouri and Linda Jackson of Mount Ayr; a sister Odean Kraft of Winnetka, Illinois; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, October 3, 2000 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Providing music were Ginny Eighmy, Mary Trullinger and Margaret Bickers. Casket bearers were Kevin Jackson, Douglas Austin, Robert Derby, Vincent Jackson, Chris Fine and Trent Shupe. Honorary pallbearers were Todd Jackson, Curt Jackson, Erin Jackson, Clinton Fine, Andrea Leonard, Darren Austin, Deanna Boese, Cassie Shupe and Cayla Shupe.
Hazel was laid to rest in the Middle Fork Cemetery , Redding.
CALVIN DEAN KIMBERLIN
Calvin Dean Kimberlin was born July 15, 1936, in Grant City, Missouri to Nemel and Mary (Dunn) Kimberlin and departed this life on September 22, 2000 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Calvin attended schools in Grant City, Missouri, Lenox, Iowa and Diagonal, Iowa where he graduated with the class of 1954.
After graduation Calvin continued to live in Diagonal where he worked several years at the Phillips 66 station. He continued his education and earned his CPA and then moved to Des Moines where he was employed as an accountant for the Greyhound Bus Lines.
Calvin was a past member of the Diagonal Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his father Nemel; a sister Norma; a niece Juanita Kimberlin; and a nephew Velmer Ugene Kimberlin.
Left to mourn his passing are his sons, Herb and Matthew Kimberlin; his mother Mary Kimberlin; brother Allen Kimberlin; sisters, Virginia Kimberlin, Judy Kimberlin, Sharon Kimberlin and Karen (husband Glen) Stevens; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held Thursday, September 28, 2000 at the United Church of Diagonal in Diagonal with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Judy Newton and Judy Kimberlin were the musicians. Casket bearers were Jack Taylor, Alvin Schlapia, John Rychnovsky, Frank Gunsolley, Claire Newton and Jay Watson. Honorary pallbearers were R. A. Beymer, A. J. Kessler and Jay Snyder.
Calvin was laid to rest in the Marshalltown Cemetery , Benton, Iowa.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr was in charge of arrangements.
ELVIN R. WAUGH, SR.
Elvin Roland Waugh, Sr., 78, of St. Joseph, Missouri, died Monday, September 25, 2000 at a St. Joseph hospital from injuries sustained in a tractor accident at his home.
Mr. Waugh was born in Grant City, Missouri on January 29, 1922. He had resided in St. Joseph since 1959.
He had been a supervisor at the former Katz Drugstore and then Skaggs Drugstore in St. Joseph until retiring. During World War II he served in the Army and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He attended the Wyatt Park Christian Church in St. Joseph. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans; King Hill Lodge No. 376, A.F. & A.M.; Radiant Chapter No. 88, Order of the Eastern Star; Masonic High-Twelve Club No. 49; and Paul's RV Camping Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary in 1992; his parents, Carl and Myrtle; and a sister Helen Waugh.
Survivors include Annetta Stone of the home; two sons, Gary Dudley of St. Joseph, Missouri and Elvin Waugh, Jr. of Dayton, Iowa; three daughters, Wendy Hatt of Leavenworth, Kansas, Gloria Larkins of Perry, Iowa and Nancy Sundberg of Des Moines, Iowa; two brothers, Leroy of Bedford, Iowa and James of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister Joann Spencer of Bedford; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, September 28, 2000 at Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph, Missouri with a Masonic service following.
Mr. Waugh was laid to rest in the Memorial Park Cemetery , St. Joseph.

FLORA BELLE WAUGH
Flora Belle Waugh was born March 9, 1906 on the family farm near Redding, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles M. and Tillie (Glendenning) Waugh.
Flora Belle grew up and lived most of her life near Redding. She graduated from Redding high school in 1928 and started her college education in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She then transferred to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
Flora Belle taught school for 50 years. She started out in Ridgeway, Missouri; later teaching in Blockton and Gravity, Iowa before starting a 26-year tenure in Treynor, Iowa. She then taught in Stuart and Afton, Iowa and retired as a teacher at Diagonal, Iowa. Flora Belle was the librarian for the Mount Ayr Public Library and the Mount Ayr correspondent for the Creston News Advertiser for many years. She moved in Mount Ayr into 1968.
Flora Belle was a lifelong member and Sunday school teacher at Middle Fork Methodist Church, the Literature Club, D.A.R. and the Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Tillie Waugh; a brother Clifton Waugh; and two sisters, Ferne Jackson and Glenna Waugh.
Survivors include two sisters, Hazel Jackson of Mount Ayr and Odean Kraft of Chicago, Illinois; nine nieces, Helen Bence of Indianola, Marjorie Hudson of Knoxville, Tennessee, Anna Louise Liles of Illinois, Alice Gardner of Creston, Iowa, Virginia Austin of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Frances Fine of Red Oak, Iowa, Janet Derby of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carolyn Shupe of Cameron, Missouri and Linda Jackson of Mount Ayr; and two nephews, Charles Jackson of Clearfield, Iowa and Wendell Jackson of Redding.
Services were held on Friday, September 29, 2000 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Ginny Eighmy and Mary Trullinger were the musicians. Casket bearers were Curt Jackson, Kelly Main, Amon Hunt, Walt McGinnis, Bernard Crawford and John Hunt.
Interment was in the Middle Fork Cemetery , Redding.
DAYLE STAGNER
Dayle Leroy Stagner of Corvallis, Oregon, died Monday, October 2, 2000 in Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 84 years old.
Mr. Stagner was born to Stiles and Ona Walter Stagner on January 6, 1916, in Lamoni, Iowa. He moved with his family to Montana when he was three years old and lived in a sod house on the prairie. They moved to Corvallis, Oregon in 1929. As a young man, he rode railroad freight cars all over the Northwest and Canada.
He married Iva Ellen Barnhouse on October 30, 1937, in Albany, Oregon. He drove logs and lumber between Fall Creek and Philomath for Sy Mann. He later worked for the city of Corvallis for 15 years, driving sweepers at night. He retired in 1981.
He was a ballplayer and loved to fish and hunt. He also enjoyed visiting his family in Iowa.
Survivors include his wife; son Lynn of Albany; daughter Joyce Carey of Fayette, Iowa; brother Paul of Lebanon, Oregon; sisters, Vaneta Francis of Portland, Oregon and Ruth Stagner of Philomath, Oregon; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Pauline Stagner and Eva Rosier.

ELVIN ROLAND WAUGH, SR.
Elvin Roland Waugh, Sr., 78, of St. Joseph, Missouri, died Monday, September 25, 2000 from injuries sustained in a tractor accident at his home.
Elvin was born in rural Grant City, Missouri on January 29, 1922 to Carl and Myrtle Faye (James). Elvin was the eldest of five children. The family moved to Blockton, Iowa in 1942. He graduated from Blockton high school with the Class of 1943.
On August 8, 1943 he was married to Mary Saville. To the union was born two children, Elvin Jr. and Nancy Sundberg.
He entered the service in September, 1944 and served in the Phillipines during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He had resided in St. Joseph, Missouri since 1959. He was supervisor at the former Katz Drug Store and then Skaggs Drug Store in St. Joseph.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans; King Hill Lodge #376 A.F. & A.M. Radiant Chapter #88, Order of the Eastern Star; Masonic High Twelve Club #49 and Paul's RV Camping Club.

Survivors include Annetta Stone of the home; son Elvin, Jr. (Jo) of Harcourt, Iowa; daughters Nancy (Ray) Sundberg of Des Moines and Wendy Hatt of Leavenworth, Kansas; stepchildren Gary Dudley of St. Joseph and Gloria Larkins of Perry, Iowa; two brothers, Leroy (Vera Jane) of Bedford and James (Carol) of Omaha, Nebraska; sister Joann (Clyde) Spencer of Bedford; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several cousins, many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday, September 28, 2000 at Rupp Funeral Home of St. Joseph with Rev. Eugene Mockabee officiating. A Masonic service followed.
Intermet was at the Memorial Park Cemetery
in St. Joseph.
HAROLD STEPHENS
Harold Keith Stephens, adopted son of Albert and Eva Thompson Stephens, began his life with them on September 9, 1906. Harold was raised on the homestead farm in southern Ringgold county, Iowa and resided there until the last few days of his life, when he was moved to Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
As a young man he attended school at the Red Brush school and was taught by Genevieve Shepherd and Flossie Woollums. He then attended the Caledonia School and was taught by Gladys Stuck.
Harold was a man of the land. His love for nature was evident by his lifestyle. He was a caretaker of both plant and animal life. Gardening was a love of Harold's and he so enjoyed sharing with his neighbors. Caring for animals and raising chickens, guineas, pigeons, parakeets and canaries were a big part of his life also. Harold shared many hours with his best friend, his dog Tammy.
Harold knew the meaning of the word neighbor. He so enjoyed baking cookies or cakes and having the neighbor kids come to share a tune on his piano, a little poem recited by him and one of his special treats. Many fond memories have been shared by those of us here today.
Harold died at 1:45 p.m. on October 9, 2000, at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He was 94 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents and one baby sister. He will long be remembered in the hearts of those who shared his neighborhood.
Graveside services were held in the Rose Hill Cemetery , Mount Ayr, on Thursday, October 12, 2000 with Pastor Ed Shields officiating. Musical selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden." Casket bearers were Jerry Shields, Junior Reynolds, Barton Shields, David Still, Mick Still and Dick Still.

THEOLA BARBOUR
Theola M. Barbour, 91, of Indianola, Iowa died of Parkinson's disease Sunday at Westview Care Center, Indianola.
The body was donated to Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center. Memorial services were on Wednesday at Chapel of Faith in Indianola.
Mrs. Barbour was born in Kellerton, Iowa and had lived in Des Moines before moving to Indianola seven years ago. She was the retired owner of Theola's Cafe and a member of Rebecca Lodge. She enjoyed playing cards and working with crafts.
She is survived by a daughter Betty Wilson of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; a brother Orville Bear of Mount Ayr, Iowa; a sister Doris Campbell of Indianola; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Hamilton's Funeral Home on Lyon Street, Indianola was in charge of the arrangements.
MARCELLA PAULINE BRINER
Marcella Pauline (Brown) Briner was born to Byron J. and Eva Brown on December 25, 1928, at Lenox, Iowa, and passed away at the home of her son Jim Johnson in Mount Ayr, Iowa on October 19, 2000 after a long bout with cancer.
Marcella graduated from Lenox high school in 1946 and then she went to Des Moines and attended the Iowa School of Beauty, graduating in 1947.
Marcella was a lady of many talents: waitressing at the Lenox Café, the Sun Valley Clubhouse and Small Corral; owner and operator of Marcella's Beauty Shop in Diagonal, Iowa and Mount Ayr; and a "pizza maker" at Casey's in Mount Ayr for 15 years.
Marcella always kept her hands busy in her spare time. She loved flowers and gardening. She also had a goldfish pond in her front yard and young children would come and throw pennies in. She loved embroidering, knitting, and crocheting, and made some beautiful quilts for all her grandchildren.
Marcella was baptized in the Christian faith on Mother's Day, 1999.
Her parents, a sister Lorraine, a brother Virgil, and a great- granddaughter Desirae preceded her in death.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, a daughter Sandra Johnson of Mount Ayr, three sons: James Johnson and wife Joyce of Mount Ayr, Allen Briner and wife Julia of Chillicothe, Missouri and Steven Briner and wife Paula of Newell, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Heather, Jayla, Bambi, Marshall, Blake, Patrick, Stephanie, Amanda and Jessica; five great-grandchildren: Levi, Lincoln, Craven, Chance and Devin; one brother Charles Brown and wife Pearl of Lenox; two sisters, Veda Miller and husband Marvin of Lenox and Annabelle Jones and husband Robert of Des Moines, Iowa; and a long time companion Russell Sweeney of Mount Ayr as well as a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home with Ed Shields and Doris Klejch officiating. Musicians were Annabelle Jones, and Judy Newton. Casket bearers were Ed Still, Bernard Crawford, Rodger Cannon, George Dailey, David Lynch and Jason Lynch. Honorary pallbearers were Heather Martin, Jayla Johnson, Bambi Briner, Stephanie Bauschman, Amanda Briner and Jessica Briner.
Marcella was laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery
in Lenox.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa, First Christian Church of Mount Ayr or Ringgold County Hospital.
