LEOLA E. ANDERSON
Leola E. Anderson was one of fourteen children born to Marshall and Alice Byrom. She was born on September 23, 1921 in Hartley, Iowa, and passed away on October 6, 2001 at the Worth County Convalescence Center in Grant City, Missouri at the age of 80. Leola has now joined her two heroes, husbands Edward and Charles.
Leola first met and married Edward E. Graves in 1941. To this union one son, Robert E. Graves was born. Leola received word that her husband, Edward, while serving in the U. S. armed forces during World War II had given his life during that war's worst battle, The Battle of the Bulge. In his last letter to Leola he had written, "Honey, I have to go be a good soldier and you have to stay home and be a good soldier, too." He gave his life for his country and died with honor, being awarded several medals, including the Silver Star, the Silver Cluster and the Purple Heart.
Leola, now a widow with her two-year-old son, Robert, was left alone to make a new life. After a time she met and married the second love of her life, Charles M. Anderson. Charles was a farmer and he and Leola and Robert made their home in Blockton, Iowa. They purchased a farm in the area and worked the land. Charles raised Robert as his own son. Charles became a Shriner and Leola a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Blockton. From a picture taken at that time in her life it was evident how happy and proud she was. They worked that small farm and Robert grew up only knowing Charles as his father. Today he speaks proudly of both men, as well as of his mother, Leola.
Leola just had her 80th birthday, along with a celebration to honor the event, thanks to her closest friend and caregiver Joyce Brown. The hearts of Leola's family can't thank Joyce and Richard and their family enough for all they have done on her behalf. The family prays that God would truly bless and keep the Brown family for all the years of help and care shown to Leola.
The staff of the Worth County Convalescence Center showed tender loving care to Leola throughout her years there and the staff at Ringgold County Hospital gave great care to Leola during the times she was a patient at their facility.
Leola was a member of the Blockton Christian Church, having been baptized by George Swan on January 22, 1950, and was a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Blockton.
Leola was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and may be considered as an Eastern Star herself, now shining down upon her family.
Leola is survived by her son Robert E. Graves and wife Judy of Henderson, Colorado; her sisters, Agusta Oldfield of Nebraska City, Nebraska and Rose Miller of Mount Ayr, Iowa; her brother Wayne Byrom of Cameron, Missouri; her grandchildren, Colleen Stilson of Freeport, Illinois, Shawn Graves of Freeport, Illinois, Melinda Graves of Madison, Wisconsin and Melissa Sisler of Madison, Wisconsin; her great-grandchildren, Dannielle Stilson, Ty Austin Stilson and Camdon Jon Sisler; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at the Christian Church in Blockton with Reverend Scott Marcum officiating. Musicians were Marvel Lawrence and Jodi Lawrence. Casket bearers were Richard Brown, Russell Naill, Richard Johnson, Joe Everhart, Earl Drake and David Loutzenhiser. Honorary pallbearers were Leo Dillon, Glen Hall and Edgar Meek.
