Robert Harold Davilla
February 25, 1920 - January 3, 2006

Robert Harold Davilla, 85, of Carman, Illinois, died at 10:12 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born February 25, 1920 in San Francisco, California, he was the son of Harold Milton and Hazel Story Davilla. On March 24, 1945 he married Melba A. Richmond in Athens, Georgia.

He attended Mission High School in San Francisco and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving from March of 1942 until his discharge in November of 1945 at the rank of Aviation Radioman 1st Class. He served on the USS Yorktown in the Bombing Squadron VB5 in the South Pacific for 2 ½ years and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and a Presidential Citation. His Naval officer training was received at Monmouth College.

Mr. Davilla was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Burlington and was a farmer in rural Carman since 1954. He was president of the Bank of Oquawka for 32 years and president of the Henderson County Unit 115 School Board for 12 years. He was a member of the Burlington Golf Club, Farm Bureau, and Palmbrook Country Club in Sun City, Arizona. He was a ham radio operator, pilot and avid golfer. He loved to boat, water ski, travel, and participated in photography. He was a champion swimmer in San Francisco and played baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Melba A. Davilla of Carman; two daughters, Dr. Roberta Davilla of Waverly and Donna Davilla of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Peter Adams and Edward Adams both of Carman, and Kaitlin Burhaus of Cedar Falls; one great granddaughter, Stephanie Adams of Carman; and three nephews, Dr. Mark Carmody and Dr. Tim Carmody both of California, and Eugene Carmody, Jr. of Washington.

His parents and one sister, Lois Carmody, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Davilla will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. in First United Methodist Church, Burlington, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Tevis officiating. The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29 will conduct military rites. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.

William C. "Bill" Dean
February 8, 1922 - September 16, 2006

-Funeral Service: Wednesday, September 20th, 11:00 AM in Lunning chapel

William C. “Bill” Dean, 84, of West Burlington, died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2006 at his home.

Born February 8, 1922 in Quincy, Illinois, he was the son of Harry J. and Philena Peterson Dean. He married Marcella “Sally” Eckelkamp June 22, 1946 in Washington, Missouri.

Mr. Dean was an Operating Engineer with Operating Engineer Local #537 for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington, Iowa. He was a pilot and owned thirteen different aircraft over the years, enjoying purchasing one, flying it for a while, selling it and purchasing another. His family also had a home adjacent to the airport where he built a hanger and taxied his aircraft from home onto the airport.

He served in the Navy during WWII as a Seaman First Class,where he operated radar on the ship and participated in the invasion of Europe.

Survivors include his wife, Marcella "Sally" Dean of West Burlington; two sons, Wayne C. Dean of Okeechobee, Florida and Lyle Dean of New London, Iowa; five grandchildren, Richie Dean and Angela Anderson and Josh Dean, Justin Dean, and Christopher Dean; two great grandchildren, Aaron Anderson and Brennan Woods; one brother Harry Dean of Burlington; and one sister Neva Bohlen of Danville, Iowa.

One son Dennis Dean and his parents preceded him in death.

Norman Deethardt
November 7, 1920 - April 2, 2006

- Graveside Memorial Funeral Service and Inurnment: Thursday, April 6, 2006
11:00 AM in Fairmont Cemetery , Davenport, Iowa

The US Army will conduct Military Rites.

According to Mr. Deethardt's wishes, his body has been cremated.

Norman Deethardt, 85, of Burlington and formerly of Florida died at 10:12 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born November 7, 1920 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Martin C. and Mabel Schuerman Deethardt. He married Helen Cooksey.

Mr. Deethardt was a World War II Army veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, 321st Glider Battalion. He served at Normandy, Rhineland, the Ardennes, and in Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, the Bronze Arrowhead, and the Glider Badge.

He was a welding supervisor retiring in 1985.

Mr. Deethardt was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge Good Faith No. 235 AF&AM in Winfield, American Legion Post 643, V.F.W. Post 7641 in New London and Order of Eastern Star No. 440 in New London.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Deethardt of Burlington; one daughter, Janet Wadsworth of Diamond Bar, California; and two sisters Marian McQueen of Miramar, Florida and Norma Brisbin of Norwood, Ohio.

According to Mr. Deethardt’s wishes, his body has been cremated.

A memorial has been established for Good Faith Lodge No. 235 AF&AM.

Joyce DeLang
January 6, 1934 - November 8, 2005

Joyce Wynn DeLang, 71, of Burlington died at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2005, at Great River Medical Center.

Born January 6, 1934 in Fort Madison she was the daughter of Floyd F. and Nellie Mae Short Funkhouser.

Ms. DeLang was a 1951 graduate of Fort Madison High School and a graduate of Southeastern Community College. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

For many years Ms. DeLang worked as a secretary at Southeastern Community College. She was involved with several bridge clubs, Riverbend Investment Club, Nancy Naifie Park Committee, scrabble club and her high school reunion committee. She loved reading, playing cards, painting and doing arts and crafts, traveling, shopping, playing tennis and gardening. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Jade DeLang Hart (Brad) of Cedar Rapids and Gwen DeLang Jennison (Jeff) of Burlington; two sons, Drake DeLang (Kathleen) of Mount Pleasant and Drew DeLang (Becky) of Burlington; five grandchildren, Alison Hart and William Hart of Cedar Rapids, Dana DeLang and Guy DeLang of Mount Pleasant and Jay Jennison of Burlington; and two brothers David Funkhouser of Mason City and Joe Funkhouser of Fort Madison.

Her parents preceded her in death.
A memorial has been established for Burlington Public Library.

Betty Jean Denny
April 26, 1930 - April 29, 2007

the Nazarene

Betty Jean Denny, 77, of Burlington, Iowa went to be with her Savior Sunday, April 29, 2007.

Born April 26, 1930 in Ottumwa, Iowa, she was the daughter of William Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Ware Leonard.

On July 22, 1950 she married William Thomas Denny in Ottumwa, Iowa. He died February 9, 1999.

Mrs. Denny was a graduate of Ottumwa High School. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Denny was a member of First Church of the Nazarene where she was involved in the Outreach Ministries. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include one son, James T. Denny of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four daughters, Pamela Jean Denny of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rebecca Lynn Johnson and Barbara Sue Denny, both of Burlington, Peggy Lee Cecil of Lehigh Acres, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; one brother, James W. Leonard, of Ottumwa; three sisters, Mary Maxine Chickering and Dorothy Harshbarger both of Ottumwa, and Ruth Ashworth of Rockford, Illinois.

Her husband, parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Wilma Jean Deuitch
June 29, 1936 - November 16, 2006

- Family Visitation: Saturday, November 25th, from 2:00 until 4:00 PM in Messiah
Lutheran Church
According to her wishes the body of Mrs. Deuitch has been cremated.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice of Great River Medical
Center

Wilma Jean Deuitch, 70, of Burlington, Iowa and formerly of Livingston, Montana, died at 7:39 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2006 at Burlington Care Center.

Born June 29, 1936 in Lakota, North Dakota, she was the daughter of William Octave and Genevieve Charlotte Welker Leith.

On May 25, 1963 she married Eugene “Gene” Edward Deuitch in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He died March 22, 2002.

Mrs. Deuitch was a graduate of Doyon (North Dakota) High School and attended Mayville State Teachers College in Mayville, North Dakota and Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. She was a career schoolteacher first in North Dakota, then Montana and in Iowa, retiring from the Burlington Community School District in 2006.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Livingston Junior Women’s Club, and an active Hospice volunteer in Montana.

Survivors include two daughters, Suzie (Mel) Bray of Burlington and Betsy (John) Perry of Tacoma, Washington; one son, Jason Deuitch of Hillsboro, Oregon; five grandchildren, Emilee, Shayla, and Andrew Deuitch and Jordanne and Brittany Perry; and two sisters, Betty Stoll of Selah, Washington and Kay Martin of Buxton, North Dakota.
Her husband; parents; two brothers, Ray Duane Leith and George “Buster” Leith; and one sister, LaVonne Henschel preceded her in death.
