Viola Laura Dockendorff, 94, formerly of Leavenworth, Kansas; Burlington, Iowa; DeWitt, Iowa; Vinton, Iowa; and Danville, Iowa; died at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Rest Haven West Nursing Home in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Born April 24, 1913 in rural Middletown, Iowa, she was the daughter of George W. and Mary Katherine Moehn Moehlman. On April 24, 1935 she married Irvy John Dockendorff of Danville, Iowa in Chicago, Illinois. He died October 30, 1994.

Mrs. Dockendorff taught school in Middletown and Sperry, Iowa after preparing at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. After raising her family she served as a Librarian in DeWitt, Iowa and taught the 4th grade in Calamus, Iowa. She was a member of Danville United Methodist Church and the Methodist churches in Burlington and DeWitt, United Methodist Women, Daughters of the Nile, Pierian Club (Federated Women), a 50 plus year member of Order of the Eastern Star, and was a charter member of Entre Nous Club.

Survivors include two sons, John R. Dockendorff of Leavenworth, Kansas and Jay D. Dockendorff of Sarasota, Florida; five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband, parents, six brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Jeanne A. Drebenstedt

January 1, 1932 - November 19, 2005

Jeanne Ann Drebenstedt, 73, of Burlington died at 4:57 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2005, at Great River Medical Center.

Born January 1, 1932 in Burlington she was the daughter of Arnold and Edith LaFeber Kindig. On September 23, 2961 she married Arthur E. Drebenstedt in Burlington. He died on February 9, 1981.

Mrs. Drebenstedt worked at various part-time jobs. She demonstrated at several stores in Burlington, greeting card representative, microfilmed records and cleaned Allgood Animal Hospital, was a mystery shopper, and a theater critic.

She was a 1949 graduate of St. Paul’s Catholic High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1988 and a member of the church choir. Jeanne was sustained by her unshakeable faith in the Lord.

She was a member and past president of People Pet Partnership and a member of Solution to Over Population of Pets. She enjoyed making jewelry, quilts, gardening and her cats.

Survivors include one daughter, Stephanie J. Drebenstedt of Burlington; two sons, Joseph A. (Annette) Drebenstedt of Wichita, Kansas and James H. Drebenstedt of Longmont, Colorado; one grandson, Jeffrey; one sister, Mary L. (Larry A.) Hagerla, of Morton, Illinois; and one brother, Donald J. (Patricia) Kindig, of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Her husband; parents; and two brothers, Jack L. Kindig and Paul Kindig preceded her in death.

Memorials have been established for Parkside First Baptist Church and STOPP (Solution to Over Population of Pets).

William D. Drumwright

January 29, 1927 - May 1, 2006

- There will be no funeral service or visitation at this time for Mr. Drumwright.
- According to his wishes, the body of Mr. Drumwright has been cremated.

William D. Drumwright, 79, of Burlington died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at Great River Medical Center’s – Klein Center.

Born January 29, 1927 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he was the son of Ira and Agatha Chandler Drumwright. On February 12, 1944 he married Ernestine Brown in Springfield, Missouri. She died in 1980.

Mr. Drumwright was a World War II Army veteran. He worked in sales at Rutherford Potato Company, retiring in 1981.

Survivors include his daughter, Kerry O’Daniels of Scottsdale, Arizona; son, W. David Drumwright of Glendale, Arizona; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren and his longtime companion, Helen Field of Burlington.

His wife and parents preceded him in death.

E. Robert "Bob" Duke
April 2, 1918 - May 26,, 2007

Mr. E. Robert “Bob” Duke, 89, of Burlington died at 6:50 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa.

Born April 2, 1918 in Burlington, he was the son of Moroni and Emma Lydia Bear Duke. On July 25, 1941, he married W. Janice Baker at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now called Community of Christ) in Burlington where he was a life long member. Mrs. Duke died June 5, 2005.

Mr. Duke was a 1938 graduate of Burlington High School.

He owned and operated Duke Construction Company for 45 years and retired in 1990.

He was a former member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America #534. He was a Boy Scout leader, church youth leader and enjoyed working with upholstery, building furniture, camping, bicycling, pool, horseshoes and fishing. In the Navy, he sailed around the world four times and was a shellback during World War II. He was discharged as Coxswain First Class.

Survivors include his two sons, Thomas (Carla) Duke of Burlington and Dale (Barbara) Duke of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin; one daughter, Sandra Murphy of Burlington; and five grandchildren, David Robert Duke, Elizabeth Michelle (James) Coeburn, Jonathan Robert Duke, Rachel June (Jeremy) Yeamans and Michael Leonard Duke.

He was preceded in death by his wife W. Janice Duke, parents, Moroni and Emma Lydia Duke, son-in-law, Michael A. Murphy, three brothers, Kenneth Duke Sr., Herald Duke and Leonard Duke, two sisters, Francis Lewis and Geraldine Duke.

Elizabeth Duncan
October 14, 1905 - May 8, 1906

Elizabeth “Betty” Duncan, 100, of Burlington and formerly of Lisle, Illinois died at 3:00 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2006 at Great River Medical Center’s – Klein Center.

Born October 14, 1905 in Champaign, Illinois, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stoecker. On November 25, 1931 she married Don C. Duncan in St. Louis, Missouri. He died August 22, 2002.

Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker.

Survivors include eight nieces and nephews.

Her husband, parents, sister, half sister and half brother preceded her in death.

James Arthur Dunn
June 10, 1946 - April 24, 2006

James Arthur Dunn, 59, of Burlington died at 9:25 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1946 in Jacksonville, Florida, he was the son of John Arthur and Violet Brown Dunn

On February 23, 1968 he married Glinda Grinder at West Hill United Methodist Church in Burlington.

Mr. Dunn was a 1964 graduate of Burlington. He was a Viet Nam Army veteran serving at White Sands Missile Range in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

He served the Burlington Fire Department for 30 years, retiring in 1999 as Deputy Fire Chief. He was a member of Iowa Fire Fighters Association.

Survivors include his wife, Glinda Dunn of Burlington; two sons, John James (Ericca) Dunn of Burlington and Christopher Allen (Michelle) Dunn of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren, Sherrie, Nicholas and Thomas Dunn and Ashley, Emily and Matthew Dunn; three step grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler and Mikey Mosena; three sisters, Nancy (Dennis) Kohl of Solon, Donna (Don) Swink of Burlington, and Patty (B.J.) Mitts of Orlando, Florida.

His parents preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established for Burlington Fire Department Ambulance Service.

Timothy Struthers Dupy
August 22, 1948 - May 24, 2006

Timothy Struthers Dupy, 57, of Burlington died at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Great River Medical Center Hospice.

Born August 22, 1948 in Ottumwa, he was the son of Lafe and Alice Louise Nelson Dupy.

Mr. Dupy was a 1968 graduate of Ottumwa High School and received his bachelor’s degree in teaching from Harris-Stowe Teachers College in St. Louis in 1977. He taught in the St. Louis School System and for Houston Independent School District until his retirement in June of 2005.

He was of the Catholic faith, loved genealogy, flowers and collecting Santa Clauses, and was a member of Des Moines County Genealogical Society

Survivors include two sisters, Stephanie (Bill) Albright of Burlington and Marcia (John) Doyle of Trophy Club, Texas; one niece, Molly Girard of Fort Worth, Texas; and one nephew, Sean Doyle of Roanoke, Texas.

His parents and grandparents preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established for Des Moines County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 493, Burlington, Iowa 52601.
