Maudie Rath
Services were July 22, 2000 for Maudie E. Rath, 74, of Ida Grove at Church of God in Ida Grove. Dr. Herbert K. Johnson officiated with burial in Ida Grove Cemetery under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Mrs. Rath died July 20 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Mrs. Rath was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Thomas and Hazel (Barrett) Meece. She grew up in the Ida Grove area.

She married Marvin E. Rath March 16, 1944. The couple owned and operated Rath Asphalt and Gravel Company for many years, first in Ida Grove and then in Lake View. In 1978, she opened the Tip Top Cafe in Ida Grove, which she operated until retiring in 1983.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the AARP, the Democratic Party and the Church of God, where she helped with the Ladies Aid and was voted Mother of the Year.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Marva and Lonnie Bennigsdorf of Battle Creek, Marlene and Mike Reitz of Ida Grove, Myra and Gene Wessel of Ida Grove and Marilyn and Wesley Mohr of Breda; a son, Marvin Rath Jr. of Waukee; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Meece of St. Louis, Mo.; and a sister, Clarice Fowler of Atlanta, Ga.

Janet Grell
Services were July 21, 2000 for Janet Lee Grell, 64, of Washta at the United Methodist Church in Holstein. The Rev. Judith A. Piper officiated with burial in Cushing Cemetery under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.

Mrs. Grell died July 18 at her home.

Mrs. Grell was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Gilmore City, the daughter of Edwin and Ethel (McBride) Shelgren. She was raised in the Gilmore City and Rolfe areas and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1953. She attended the University of Iowa and Buena Vista University.

She married Joseph Grell Oct. 20, 1962, in Rolfe. The couple farmed in the Washta area and she taught school for several years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Holstein, where she was a member of UMW and had taught Sunday School. She was also a member of Nacirema, Douglas Homemakers and the neighborhood card club.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Jody and Lloyd Parker of Anthon, and Jeri and David Johannsen of Sutherland; a son and his wife, Jed and Deb Grell of Washta; seven grandchildren, Keith, Alex and Jake Parker, Drew and Dax Johannsen and Bethany and Cassie Grell; two brothers and their wives, Dave and Shirley Shelgren of Springfield, Ore., and Eddie and Judy Shelgren of Humboldt; four sisters, Pat Daughenbaugh of Chino, Calif., Ester Mae Sinek of Rolfe, Shirley and her husband, Earl Nielsen of Humboldt, and Nancy and her husband, Jim Martin of Rolfe; a half-brother, Gordon Shelgren of Pittsburg, Calif., and a half-sister, Edna DeVine of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Evelyn Warburton
Services will be at 2 p.m. July 26, 2000 for Evelyn B. Warburton, 94, of Ida Grove, formerly of Washta, at Washta United Metho-dist Church. The Rev. John Scherb will officiate with burial in Grand Meadow Cemetery in rural Washta under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Chero-kee.

Mrs. Warburton died July 22 at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.

Mrs. Warburton was born May 15, 1906, in Douglas Township, Ida County, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Bergmann) Schuett. She attended country school.

She married Charles E. Warburton May 14, 1932, in Dakota City. He died June 9, 1978. She was a longtime Washta resident before moving to Holstein in 1980. She entered Hilltop Care Center in Cherokee in 1987, and resided there until moving to Morningside Rehab and Care Center in October 1998. She had also resided in Cherokee Villa for a short time.

She was a member of Washta United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert C. Warburton of Sun City, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Beverly and Richard Lorenzen of Holstein; five grandchildren, Ken Warburton of Peculiar, Mo., Randy Warburton of New Castle, Wyo., Barb Gile of Glendale, Ariz., Mike Lorenzen of Missouri Valley and Kristi McCormick of Lake View; nine great-grandchildren, Matthew and Shannon Warburton, John, Nathan and Kyle Lorenzen, Devin and Derek Conover and Carey and Jason Hieb; and two-great-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Madison Hieb.

Sr. Monica of the Eternal Father OCD
Services were July 24, 2000 for Sr. Monica of the Eternal Father OCD, 71, of Sioux City at the Carmelite Monastery. The Most Rev. Daniel N. DiNardo, Bishop of Sioux City, was the celebrant and homilist. The Most Rev. Lawrence D. Soens, retired Bishop of Sioux City, was the concelebrant, along with Monsignor Michael D. Sernett, Rev. Patrick O'Kane, Rev. Michael T. Larkin, Rev. Richard A. Sitzman and other guest priests. Burial was in the monastery cemetery under the direction of Larkin Funeral Home Inc.

Sr. Monica of the Eternal Father OCD was the former Geraldine E. Croxell. She was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Sioux City, the daughter of Harold F. and Mary Rose (Hadan) Croxell. She was raised in the rural Correctionville area. She attended country school and graduated from Correctionville High School in 1947. When she came to Sioux City, she worked for Palmer Candy Company for a couple of years. She then became a cost accountant at Swift and Company for 15 years, and later for three years at Cudahy Packing Company. In September 1968, she went to work in the Livestock Exchange Building as a bookkeeper and office manager for L.H. Jones and Partners Company and the Hayes Order Buyers Company. She retired in 1983.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was active with 4-H Clubs, the American Kennel Club and was a volunteer for the League of Women Voters.

On Oct. 14, 1983, she entered the Carmelite Monastery of Our Lady of the Incarnation. On Sept. 8, 1984, she received her Carmelite habit. On Sept. 8, 1986, she took her first profession and on Oct. 7, 1989, she took her solemn profession.

Survivors include a brother and his wife, Robert and Joan Croxell of Holstein; a sister, Ruth Durham of Correctionville; a brother-in-law, Erasmo Garza of Pleasanton, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Naomi Cox
Memorial services were July 18, 2000 for Naomi F. Cox, 73, of Lander, Wyo., at the First Baptist Church in Lander. The Rev. Ralph Partelow officiated.

Mrs. Cox died July 14 at Lander Valley Medical Center in Lander.

Mrs. Cox was born Aug. 31, 1926, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Leonard and Mae Hare. She grew up in Battle Creek and graduated from high school in 1943. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City. At the peak of World War II, she went to work for the military as a civilian employee. She worked at Sioux City Air Base and at Camp Maxey in Texas.

After the war, she worked in Sioux city for a short time before going to work for the Veterans Administration in Des Moines.

She married Rollie Cox Aug. 13, 1950, in Battle Creek. The couple moved to Nyssa, Ore., where he began his teaching profession. In 1952, they moved to Lander, her husband's hometown. They lived in Lander for eight years before moving to their ranch. She remained at home with her children until they reached school age before going back to work.

She was employed for a brief time at NOLS and spent 25 years in the employment of the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. At the time of her retirement in 1987 from the Bureau of Land Management, she was the Land Law Examiner in the Lander office. Her husband retired the same year, and they spent that time traveling and enjoying their ranch, children and grandchildren.

She was active in her church and held several offices in the Lander Christian Women's Club and the Borner's Garden Extension Club. She was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and served two terms as president, belonged to the Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered often in the hospital gift shop.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Carol Ahmed of Rio Rancho, N.M., Roger Cox of Santa Clara, Calif., David Cox of Lander, Wyo., and Beth Cox of Corrales, N.M.; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Kerr of Thermopolis, Carol Thorsen of Blair, Neb., and Donna Hoard of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Leslie Hare of Lander and Leonard Hare of Waterloo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), P.O. Box 4809, Palos Verde, Calif. 90274; or the Lander Christian Women's Club, c/o Mrs. Lemons, 1325 McDougall Dr., Lander, Wyo. 82520.

Catherine King
Memorial services were July 14, 2000 for Catherine M. King, 66, of Sioux City at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel in Sioux City. Burial of the cremains was in Piero Bethel Cemetery in Anthon.

Mrs. King died July 10 at her home.

Mrs. King was born Feb. 13, 1934, in Anthon, the daughter of Jens and Viva (Parker) Katelsen. She attended school in Anthon and graduated from Anthon High School. She attended Merciden School of Practical Nursing in Marshalltown, where she received her practical nursing license. She moved to Sioux City in 1958.

She married Charles King May 28, 1960, in Papillion, Neb. She was employed as a practical nurse with St. Luke's Hospital from 1958 to 1993. Her husband died Sept. 17, 1991, in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a Bible School volunteer.

Survivors include four sons, Brent Duane and his wife, Sumiko of Pearl City, Hawaii, Shawn Richard and his wife, Mary Lou, Nathan Charles and his wife, Cindy and Barry Allen, all of Sioux City; a daughter, Randi Ranee Ruttkay of Sioux City; three brothers, Mike and his wife, Elaine Katelsen of Lawton, Chris J. and his wife, Mary Katelsen and Hans Katelsen, all of Anthon; three sisters-in-law, Geraldine Schrader of Battle Creek, Darlene Dirks of Tama and Barbara King of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established in her memory.

Evert Nielsen
Services were July 10, 2000 for Evert Raymond Nielsen, 90, of Storm Lake at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. The Rev. Steve Schulz officiated with burial in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Mr. Nielsen died July 7 in Holstein.

Mr. Nielsen was born Jan. 17, 1910, in Galva, the son of Thomas and Anna (Oberg) Nielsen. He was raised and attended school in both Ida and Woodbury Counties. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He married Dorothy M. Fritz Sept. 15, 1937, in Ida Grove. He was a lifelong farmer in Ida and Sac Counties. He retired in 1979 and moved to Storm Lake.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, LaVonne and Ron O'Meara of Storm Lake; a brother, Walter Nielsen of Odebolt; two sisters-in-law, Helen Vannatta and Lucille Sauter; three grandchildren, Julie Johnson, Marcia O'Meara and Brenda O'Meara; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia "Pat" Schonts
Memorial services will be announced at a later date for Patricia "Pat" Schonts, 73, of Traverse City, Mich., formerly of Ida Grove, under the direction of Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Mrs. Schonts died July 9 at her home.

Mrs. Schonts was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Fairmont, Va., the daughter of Harry and Virginia (Portman) Drake. She married Harry Fuller, then later married Harold Schonts, who preceded her in death in 1989.

She spent most of her life in the Traverse City area, except from 1970 until 1990 when she lived in Iowa. She was employed by the Ida County Courier from 1979 until 1986.

Survivors include four sons, Mike Fuller of Alton, N.H., David Fuller of Interlochen, Scott and his wife, Diana Schonts of Odebolt and Jay and his wife, Wendy Schonts of Traverse City, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.

Helma Rusch
Services were July 15, 2000 for Helma Margaret Rusch, 91, of Wall Lake, formerly of Denison, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The Revs. Kurt R. Kaiser and David M. Sewing officiated with burial in Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig under the direction of Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.

Mrs. Rusch died July 12 at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.

Mrs. Rusch was born Aug. 9, 1908, on a farm in rural Mapleton, Crawford County, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Seehusen) Laumbach. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed at Presho, S.D., in 1922. She was raised on a farm at Presho, S.D., receiving her formal education in rural schools. Following her education, she returned to Mapleton where she was employed in domestic work for her aunts.

She married Harvey Rusch Sept. 25, 1934, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple had five children, Beverly, Merlin, Lois May, Larry and Janice. They farmed in Crawford and Ida Counties moving to their Paradise Township farm in 1957. After their retirement from farming, they moved to Denison in 1980. She moved to Twilight Acres in Wall Lake March 16, 1995.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. In earlier years, she was a member of Zion Ladies Aid and a local square dance club.

Survivors include her husband of Wall Lake; two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Duane Wunschel of Wall Lake and Janice and Ray Harris of Pine Bluff, Ark.; a daughter-in-law, Theonne Rusch Kolls of LaQuinta, Calif.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Booth of Fort Pierre, S.D.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
