Evangeline Murray
Services were June 5, 2000 for Evangeline G. Murray, 89, of Norfolk, Va., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dubuque. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery
in Key West, Iowa under the direction of Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home.
Miss Murray died June 1 at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Va.
Miss Murray was born Jan. 6, 1911, in Dubuque, the daughter of John B. and Grace (Vandanaker) Murray Sr. She grew up in Dubuque and was a dental assistant for her father, Dr. John B. Murray Sr. D.D.S. at his office in Dubuque.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk, Va.
Survivors include two sisters, June Link of Norfolk, Va., and Ruth Sievers of Dubuque; a brother and his wife, John B. Jr. and Virginia Murray of Ida Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family requests no flowers.
Walter Petersen
Services were June 7, 2000 for Walter Dean Petersen, 72, of Anthon at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Petersen died June 4 at Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland.
Mr. Petersen was born Dec. 7, 1927, in Battle Creek, the son of John and Eeta (Barger) Petersen. He graduated from Anthon High School in 1945. From 1945-46 he participated in Golden Gloves boxing.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946-48. After his discharge, he attended Iowa State University at Ames and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Survivors include a sister and her husband, Martha Ann and Donald Hanson of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother and his wife, Benjie and Marnis Petersen of Anthon; and several nieces and nephews.
Dorothy Lowe
Services were May 26, 2000 for Dorothy Pearl Lowe, 84, of South Sioux City, Neb., at First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City, Neb., under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. An afternoon service was held at the United Methodist Church in Holstein with burial in Holstein Cemetery
under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Mrs. Lowe died May 24 at her home.
Mrs. Lowe was born March 6, 1916, in rural Holstein, the daughter of Arthur and Christina Hass. She graduated from Holstein High School in 1933 and later from Sioux City Business College in 1934.
She married Lyall L. Lowe Aug. 18, 1938, in Omaha, Neb. The couple started many business enterprises in Sioux City including Lowe Coat Company, Friendly Furnace Company, Lowe Rental Services, and the Town House Motel in South Sioux City, Neb. He died in 1993.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Senior Center in South Sioux City.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamella of South Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Jerry Lowe and Janet Brown-Lowe of Bettendorf and Chip and Julie Lowe of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Alex, Natalie, Meredith, Erika and David; a sister, Katherine Wiese of Holstein and extended family members.
Leonard Newman
Services were May 30, 2000 for Leonard E. "Tuey" Newman, 83, of Mapleton at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. The Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiated with burial in Grant Cemetery
in Rodney.
Mr. Newman died May 25 at a Sioux City hospital.
Mr. Newman was born Nov. 24, 1916, at Ticonic, the son of Charles Orval and Dora (Peacock) Newman. He grew up and was educated in the area. From 1936 to 1937 he served with the Conservation Core Camp.
He married Ethel Mary Treiber July 19, 1937, in Marshalltown. The couple lived and farmed in the Anthon area from 1937-1941. From 1941-1975, they farmed outside of Mapleton. In 1975, they retired and moved into Mapleton. She died in 1988.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jerry and Mavis Newman of Madrid and Roy and Patty Newman of Piedmont, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Newman of Alma, Ark.; five grandchildren, Cindy McClelland, Lei Lani Tilson, Leisa Ryder, Alan Newman and Don Newman; nine great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Leland "Pi" and Betty Newman of Ida Grove; a sister, Beulah Lucas of Mapleton; and other relatives.
Robert Heser
Memorial services were May 18, 2000 for Robert Kenneth Heser, 74, of Camdenton, Mo., at St. George's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Timothy Coppinger officiated under the direction of Allee-Reed Funeral Home in Camdenton, Mo.
Memorial gifts may be made to St. George's Episcopal Church or to the Camden County Library.
Mr. Heser died May 15 at his home.
Mr. Heser was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Sparta, Wash., the son of Albert and Lieta (Green) Heser. He married Elizabeth Aldrich Oct. 13, 1950 in Sparta, Wash.
He served as a signalman in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic and practiced in Holstein for 36 years before retiring to the Lake of Ozarks in 1991.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Julie and Dennis Wares of Otley and Mary and Andrew Dunn of Morro Bay, Calif.; two sons, Dr. Robert Heser of Denver, Colo., and Thomas and his wife, Cynthia Heser of Urbandale; four grandchildren, Ken, Jeff, and Wendy Wares and Melanie Heser; and two brothers, Ruland Heser of Sparta, Wash., and Ronald Heser of Houston, Texas.
Francis "Fiz" Tunink
Services were May 23, 2000 for Francis A. "Fiz" Tunink, 74, of Odebolt at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Allan Reicks officiated with burial in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery
in Odebolt, with full military honors conducted by American Legion Roose Post #313 of Odebolt, under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Tunink died May 20 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City.
Mr. Tunink was born Dec. 23, 1925, near Heisler, Alberta, Canada, the son of Bernard and Katherine (Turner) Tunink. The family settled in the Raeville, Neb., area in 1926, where he grew up. In 1946, he moved to Carroll County.
He married Joan Kerkhoff Dec. 27, 1952, in Templeton. He was employed by Adams Ranch, and over the years, pursued various agricultural interests including cattle buying and farming. He later owned and operated Tunink Feed Service in Odebolt.
He served as a medic in the U.S. Army Fifth Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. He attained the rank of sergeant first class and earned several medals including two Bronze Service Stars.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Kent Woodhead of Lincoln, Neb., Jean and Terry Watters of Estherville and Karen and Michael Ricciotti of Wichita, Kan.; a son, Curtis Tunink of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Tunink, Kristen and Angela Watters and Brandon and Courtney Woodhead; three sisters, Cecilia Theim of Petersburg, Neb., Marie O'Brien of Belmont, Calif., and Delores and her husband, Alfred Metz of Aurora, Neb.; and three sisters-in-law, Erma Tunink of Glidden, Monica Tunink of Guthrie Center and Mitzi Tunink of Santa Ana, Calif.
Carol Kuester
Services were May 12, 2000 for Carol J. Kuester, 59, of Calumet at Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. The Rev. Lola Rosenberger officiated with burial in Liberty Township Cemetery
under the direction of Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.
Mrs. Kuester died May 9 at a Sioux City hospital.
Mrs. Kuester was born Nov. 18, 1940, in Cherokee, the daughter of Edward and Alice (Kuehl) Reimers. She attended Calumet schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1959.
She married Leonard Kuester July 15, 1976, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was employed as a secretary with C-S Agrow Service in Calumet for many years. The couple then operated Kuester's Kove in Calumet for seven years. She then managed Primghar Golf and Country Club for four years.
She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. She co-founded Calumet First Responders and served as co-chairman of the Calumet Centennial celebration.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Denise and Jim Nicholson of Ida Grove and Deb and Brent Shatto of Estherville; a son, Todd Davis of Montana; six grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan, twins Adam and Caleb, Kelsey and Seth; a sister, Delores Gerstandt of Paullina; and a brother and his wife, Duane and Vi Reimers of Paullina.
James Crow
Memorial services were May 11, 2000 for James Michael Crow, 60, of Cushing at River Valley High School Auditorium in Correctionville. Sister Mary Clare Walling officiated under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.
Mr. Crow died May 7 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.
Mr. Crow was born Dec. 16, 1939 at Sioux City, the son of Emery and Margaret Ann (Jensen) Crow. He graduated from Sioux City East High School in 1958 and Morningside College in 1962. He received his masters degree from the University of South Dakota in 1971.
He married Margaret Anne Fude Feb. 23, 1963, in Laurens. The couple lived in Cushing. He was a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and athletic director for Cushing, Eastwood and River Valley Schools. He is remembered for coaching many high school football teams, including the 1978 Class 1A Iowa State High School championship football team, Eastwood High School.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathy and her husband, Bob Morgan of Eldersburg, Md., Karen Crow of Carroll and Tracy and her fiancé, Tommy Brangham of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Patty Glisar of Sioux City and Colleen and her husband, Larry Barth of Clive; and nieces and nephews.
Irene Paulsen
Services were May 10, 2000 for Irene Dorothea Anna Paulsen, 90, of Ida Grove at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiated with burial in Morgan Township Cemetery
in Schleswig under the direction of Chris-tensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Paulsen died May 7 at Horn Memo-rial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Paulsen was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Grant Township, Ida County, the daughter of John F. and Hertha (Marth) Abbe. She was baptized and confirmed at Grant Church in rural Ida County.
She married Carl J. Paulsen July 4, 1928. The couple farmed west of Schleswig for five years, then made their home south of Arthur, where they farmed for 35 years. They retired and moved into Ida Grove in 1968. He died in 1972.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig since 1928.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Roger and Shirley Paulsen of Ida Grove; two granddaughters, Julie Kay Paulsen and her fiancé Rod Marron of Holstein and Deanna Marie and her husband, Scott Cranston of Odebolt; a grandson-in-law and his wife, Ron and Jenny Sorensen of Odebolt; six great-grandchildren, Shelby Marie, Dani-elle Sharon and Presley Hope Cranston and Brenna Jo, Jesse Lee and Hannah Mae Sorensen; a brother, Theodore Abbe of Sch-leswig; three sisters, Clara Stockfleth of West Chester, Ohio, Esther Jepsen of Spirit Lake and Lois and her husband, Raymond Scott of Danbury; and a sister-in-law, Caroline Paulsen of Schleswig.
Harold Demarest
Services were May 10, 2000 for Harold Wesley Demarest, 93, of Cushing at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing. The Rev. Joelle Colville-Hanson officiated with burial in Cushing Cemetery
under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.
Mr. Demarest died May 6 at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville.
Mr. Demarest was born Oct. 9, 1906, in Cushing, the son of Charles Wesley and Bertha Lee (Slater) Demarest.
He married Clara Goodburn in December 1927. He worked for Graham Page Garage in Sioux City as a mechanic and then went to work for Fairmont Creamery. He worked there until his dad got sick and then he returned to farming. In 1964, the couple moved into Cushing. She died in 1974.
In 1976, he married Alyce Schulke. She died in 1996. During his married life, he owned and operated Al Groth's gas station and had a tank wagon service; he also had a gas station at Rock Branch; he sold Studebaker cars; and sold Farmer's Hybrid seed corn. He operated a threshing ring for many years and also did custom farming. In June 1996 he moved into the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center.
He served on the school board for 30 years, was a substitute school bus driver, was in the ASCS office for 13 years and was mayor of Cushing for 12 years.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Gaylen and Myrtie Demarest of Cushing; a daughter and her husband, Laurel and Wayne Babb of Moville; a son-in-law and his wife, Robert and Rita Rohde of Ida Grove; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Goodburn of Cushing and Ethel Goodburn of Yankton, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
