Gaylord Bumsted
Services were March 17, 2000 for Gaylord Charles Bumsted, 88, of Mapleton at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton. The Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiated with burial in Liston Township Cemetery
in Danbury under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton.
Mr. Bumsted died March 13 at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
Mr. Bumsted was born Aug. 10, 1911, in Danbury, the son of Charles and Nellie (Davis) Bumsted. He attended country school and Danbury Public School until he was needed on the farm. He also worked for various farmers in the area.
He married Helen Bucoy Aug. 9, 1935, in Ida Grove. The couple farmed near Mapleton before moving to Danbury in 1940, where they farmed for 32 years. In 1969, they moved into Mapleton, where he worked in the maintenance department of Maple Heights Nursing Home for 18 years. He entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in January 1998.
He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ and Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Larry and Jean Bumsted of Oto, Jerry and Tootie Bumsted of Mapleton and Gary and Eileen Bumsted of Anthon; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; two brothers and their wives, Earl and Beverly Bumsted and Lloyd and Helene Bumsted, all of Ute; and a sister, Stella Fredrickson of Mapleton.
Donald Ullrich
Services were March 20, 2000 for Donald Ullrich, 69, of Denison at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery
in Denison under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Mr. Ullrich died March 17 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Kyle and Stephanie Ullrich and Dudley and Rebecca Ullrich, all of Kiron, and Jeff and Terri Ullrich of Denison; a special friend, Reva Swaters of Denison; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine Gierstorf of Schleswig and Helen and her husband, Jack Hanna of Panama City Beach, Fla.; two brothers and their wives, Delbert and Betty Ullrich of Dakota Dunes and William and Elizabeth Ullrich of Ida Grove.
Dorothy Schluter
Services were March 20, 2000 for Dorothy M. Schluter, 84, of Ida Grove at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. Benjamin Ray, pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, officiated with burial in Ida Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Schluter died March 18 at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Schluter was born April 27, 1915, in Crawford County near Westside, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Dahlke) Pacholke. She was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical faith and attended school near Westside.
She married Edward Schluter Aug. 2, 1933. The couple made their home in the Westside community. They moved to Ida Grove in 1942 and farmed there until his death in 1970. She remained in Ida Grove where she performed janitorial services for a number of people through December of 1999.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Walter Sonksen of Avoca; a son and his wife, Ronald and Mildred Schluter of Ida Grove; four grandchildren, Randy and his wife, Donna Sonksen of Oakland, Joan and her husband, Steven Erickson of Marshall, Minn., Lon Schluter of Ida Grove and Jan and her husband, Dan Martocci of Belvidere, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Chad and Corey Erickson and Taylor and Jacob Martocci; a sister, Vera Nobiling of Arcadia; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Robert Irwin
Robert E. Irwin, 74, of Germantown, Tenn., died March 1, 2000, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Mr. Irwin was born July 6, 1925, near Galva, the son of Matthew and Charlotte (Moffott) Irwin. From early childhood he lived on a farm in Silver Creek Township and was a member of Silver Creek Meth-odist Church. He attended Ida Grove High School , graduating in 1943. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946.
He married Donna Forney of Ida Grove Oct. 4, 1945, in Bellerville, Ill., while stationed at Scott Air Force Base. At war's end, the couple lived in Ida Grove before moving to Memphis, Tenn., in 1947, where he was founder and owner of Zip Products, a metal fabrication firm.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Timothy Irwin; a daughter, Vickie Brown; three grandsons, Timothy Jr., David and Phillip Irwin; and a brother, Merle Irwin of Ida Grove.

Laura Goodenow
Services were March 14, 2000 for Laura Marie Goodenow, 103, of Battle Creek at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. The Rev. Benjamin Ray officiated with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery
in Battle Creek un-der the direc-tion of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Goodenow died March 10 at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Goodenow was born Dec. 29, 1896, on a farm seven miles northwest of Battle Creek, the daughter of August A. and Maren (Hummelgard) Mickelsen. After her father's sudden death in January 1905, she moved to Battle Creek with her mother, sister Agnes and brothers Allen, John and Lloyd. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1915, then worked as a clerk in the Battle Creek Drug Store, A.J. Warn Jewelry Store and as a telephone operator.
She married Fred Ray Goodenow March 8, 1919. The couple continued to live near or in Battle Creek. During World War II, she worked in Robinson's Grocery Store, Christianson's Meat Market and as a relief phone operator. Her husband died in 1960.
She joined the First Presbyterian Church on April 10, 1910 and continued to be an active member, being recognized in 1985 for 75 years of membership. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir, a Deacon, and held many offices in the Women's Society. She was the Cradle Roll chairman for many years. She received the Senior Presbyterian Award from the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, Presbyterian Church (USA) by Prospect Hill Presbytery.
She was a Past Matron and member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 70 years; a charter member, past president and county officer of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years; a member and past president of the Ida County Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary; a member of Senior Citizens, Bridge Club, Women's Club and the Ida County Historical Society. She received the honor of being Queen of Battle Creek at the Battle Creek Quasquicentennial in 1990.
Survivors include three grandchildren and their spouses, Ronald and Marilyn Owen of Bettendorf, Marcia and Junior Menke of Mason City and L. Douglas and Audrey Owen of Clinton; seven great-grandchildren, James Dlouhy of Mason City, Jennifer Owen-Kuhn and her husband, Kevin of Cedar Falls, Laurie and her husband, Matthew Harrison of Bettendorf, and Matthew, Andrew, Megan and Benjamin Owen of Clinton; four step great-grandchildren, Lizabeth and her husband, Tom Petersen and Greg and his wife, Laura Menke, all of Tucson, Ariz., Jodie Kush of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Tim Menke of South Pasadena, Calif.; and two great-great-grandchildren, Alexander Dlouhy of Belmond and Meghan Menke of Tucson, Ariz.
Joseph Dinges
Services were March 15, 2000 for Joseph G. Dinges, 91, of Arthur at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Allan A. Reicks officiated with burial in Wall Lake Cemetery
at Wall Lake under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Dinges died March 12 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mr. Dinges was born Dec. 17, 1908, northwest of Odebolt, the son of Joe Sr. and Katherine (Reis) Dinges. He grew up in the Odebolt area and attended St. Martin's Catholic School.
He married Opal Heidenreich in 1936 in St. Martin's Catholic Church. The couple farmed south of Arthur for many years. In the late 1970s, they moved into Arthur. She died in 1992.
He later married Pearl Roll at St. Martin's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter and her husband, Ramona and John Harris of Modesto, Calif.; three step grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Frances Vaughan and Ruth Roeder, both of Arthur, Vincent and Vera Miller of Pinehurst, N.C., Florence and Marvin Wunschel of Ida Grove and Don and Marguerite Miller of Odebolt.
Edwin "Brownie" Brown
Services were March 14, 2000 for Edwin H. "Brownie" Brown, 68, of Mapleton at First Christian Church in Onawa. The Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiated with burial in Spring Hill Cemetery
in Moorhead under the direction of Rush Family Chapel in Onawa.
Mr. Brown died March 10 at a Sioux City hospital.
Mr. Brown was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Barney and Ruby (Adams) Brown.
He married Phyllis Archer Aug. 14, 1954, at Onawa. The couple lived on a farm near Moorhead for 16 years. In 1970, they moved to Mapleton where they lived for 23 years. They moved to Sioux City in 1993, and returned to Mapleton in October of 1999.
While in Mapleton he worked for McNear Oil and was an over-the-road truck driver for American Freight, Warren Transport and Hunt Transportation. He also worked for Dial America in Sergeant Bluff and following his retirement he worked for several Sioux City businesses as a security guard.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Onawa, Peter A. Hanson American Legion Post and Elk Lodge 586, AF and AM of Moorhead.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and James Guernsey of Sergeant Bluff and Debra and Jerry Payne of Ida Grove; three sons, Michael and his wife, Karen Brown of Sioux City, Steven and his wife, Tracy Brown of Chariton and Brian Brown of Sanborn; 18 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Iva Hubbard
Graveside services were March 10, 2000 for Iva L. Hubbard, 102, of Sioux City at Graceland Park Cemetery
in Sioux City. The Rev. Leonard F. Sjogren of Grace United Methodist Church officiated under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Mrs. Hubbard died March 7 at Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Mrs. Hubbard was born Jan. 7, 1898, in Odebolt, the daughter of John H. and Rosella (Rorabaugh) Wagner. While in high school, she moved with her family to Marshall, Minn., and graduated from there. She moved to Sioux City in 1919 and graduated from Sioux City Business College.
She married Marion "Jack" Hubbard Dec. 8, 1920, in Sioux City. He died in 1968.
She worked for Galinsky Brothers Fruit Co. while attending business college, then Buckwalter Realty. She worked at Morningside State Bank for 40 years, where she was in charge of the insurance department for 25 years.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Miriam Circle, Order of Eastern Star Rose Croix Chapter, Sioux City Business and Professional Club, Sioux City Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary and St. Luke's Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She was appointed to a national committee to preserve Social Security and Medicare.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Ethel Yarley
Services were March 15, 2000 for Ethel Verlene Bartels Yarley, 72, of Pitts-boro, N.C., formerly of Hampton, S.C., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, S.C. Burial was in Law-tonville Cemetery
near Estill under the direction of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, S.C.
Mrs. Yarley died March 10 at her home.
Mrs. Yarley was born April 22, 1927, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Walter and Anna Louise (Wonder) Bartels. She was a retired nurse, having worked at the Veterans Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She had served as an Army nurse during the Korean Conflict.
She had been active with the Guillian Barre Syndrome Support Group (Charleston Chapter) and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax.
Survivors include her husband, Earle J. Yarley of Pittsboro, N.C.; a son, John Yarley of Franklin, Tenn.; a daughter, Luann Y. Wiggenhorn of Cary, N.C.; four grandchildren, Sara Megan Yarley, Jena Lauren Yarley, Katelyn Anna Wiggenhorn and Amanda Lauven Wiggenhorn; and a number of nieces and nephews.
