Philip Kuchel
Services were Jan. 10, 2000 for Philip Arthur Kuchel, 86, of Kingsley at Kingsley United Meth-odist Church. The Rev. Paul Evans officiated with burial in Kingsley Cemetery
under the direc-tion of Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Mr. Kuchel died Jan. 6 at Kingsley Rehab and Care Center in Kingsley.
Mr. Kuchel was born Feb. 20, 1913, in Holstein, the son of Philip and Minnie (Lage) Kuchel. He moved with is family to a farm near Kingsley when he was six years old. He attended Kingsley High School.
He married Maxine Steffe May 18, 1937, in Kingsley. He served his country during World War II with the Work Projects Administration, where he learned painting and carpentry.
Following his return to the Kingsley area, he became a general contractor doing construction and painting. He also was a land developer and built many houses in Kingsley and the surrounding area.
He was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church and Cosmos Masonic Lodge 470, where he was a past Master. He served on the Kingsley City Council.
Survivors include his wife; six sons and their wives, Don and Twila Kuchel of Brandon, S.D., Terry and Deborah Kuchel of Tucson, Ariz., Ken and Doneen Kuchel, Mark and Barb Kuchel and Kevin and Shari Kuchel, all of Kingsley, and Blaine and LuAnne Kuchel of Spirit Lake; two daughters, Deb and her husband, Lowell Chinn and LuAnne Ruba, all of Kingsley; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Russell and Keith Kuchel of Montana, Berneil "Buck" and Carol Kuchel of Arizona and Gaylen and Wanda Kuchel of Omaha, Neb.; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kuchel of Mechanicsville.
Kelly Koopman
Services were Jan. 10, 2000 for Kelly Sue Koopman, 32, of Le Mars at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Richard Ries officiated with burial in Calvary Cemetery
in Le Mars under the direction of Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Koopman died Jan. 7 at her home.
Mrs. Koopman was born April 12, 1967, at Britt, the daughter of Harlen and Florence (Houts) Harris. She grew up in Remsen and graduated from Remsen-Union High School. She graduated from Iowa Western College in Council Bluffs.
She married Keith Koopman June 3, 1989, at Le Mars. The couple made their home in Le Mars. She worked for Wells Dairy for several years and then operated a day care center in her home.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Rachel, at home; two sons, Zachery and Matthew, both at home; her mother of Le Mars; her father of Superior; five sisters and their husbands, Micki and John Fischer of Arthur, Jackie and Mike Schnepf of Le Mars, Vickie and Doug Eaton of Plymouth, Minn., Diane and Wayne Wolf of Mart, Texas, and Cyndi and Don Emida of Fort Madison; four brothers and their wives, Marlen "Sam" and Donita Harris of Glencoe, Minn., Kevin "Roy" and Diane Harris of Castle Rock, Colo., Tom and Joyce Harris of Georgetown, Texas and Randy and Jane Harris of Virginia Beach, Va.; maternal grandmother, Barbara Houts of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mark and Bernice Koopman of Le Mars; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Doug and Stephanie Koopman of Aurora, Colo., and Denny and Lori Koopman, Scott and Marle Koopman and Kim and Darrell Hargens, all of Le Mars.
Nilmah Gilbert
Services were Dec. 28, 1999 for Nilmah Cecelia Gilbert, 93, of Danbury at the United Methodist Church in Danbury. The Rev. Glenn Fouts III officiated with burial in Liston Township Cemetery
in Danbury under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton.
Mrs. Gilbert died Dec. 23 in Sioux City.
Mrs. Gilbert was born April 27, 1906, in Ashton, Ill., the daughter of Charles P. and Ada Grace (Ed-gington) Baker. In 1910, the family moved to Mapleton and in 1912 moved nine miles southeast of Dan-bury. She graduated from Dan-bury Public High School in 1925. She attended the University of Ne-braska at Lincoln where she re-ceived her teaching certificate. She then taught in a country school for five years.
She married Clark Gilbert Dec. 19, 1931, in Wilbur, Neb. The couple moved to Tabor in 1946 and returned to Danbury in 1951. She worked for the Flora Betts Insurance Agency from 1951-67 when she purchased the business and renamed it the Gilbert Insurance Agency. Her husband died in 1970. She retired in June of 1982.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Danbury where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, served as church treasurer and Sunday School superintendent and taught Sunday school. She served as the Liston Township clerk from 1968-95.
Survivors include a son, Harry Gilbert of La Habra, Calif.; three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Keith Tucker of Glenwood, Kay and Tom Pfaffle of Placentia, Calif., and Mary and Leon Ortner of Danbury; two sisters, Donna Longlee of Castana and Norma Johnson of the Whiting Care Center in Whiting; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Amelia Harris
Services were Dec. 30, 1999 for Amelia M. Harris, 87, of Holton, Kan., at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Larkinburg Cemetery.
Mrs. Harris died Dec. 27 at her home.
Mrs. Harris was born May 29, 1912, in Crawford County, the daughter of John and Anna (Rahn) Wittmaack.
She married Leo C. Harris July 15, 1928, in Ida Grove. She lived in Arrington and Whiting before moving to Ida Grove where she lived for more than 20 years. She was a homemaker. Her husband died in 1977. She had lived in Holton since 1991.
She had been attending the Larkinburg Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Bagwell of Whiting and Shirley Calvert of Topeka; five sons, Wilbur Lee Harris of Hoyt, Leslie Wayne Harris of Westmoreland, Eldon Leo Harris of Holton, Wendell Edward Harris of Meriden and Kenneth Eugene Harris of Arizona; 44 grandchildren; 92 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Joseph Stapleton Jr.
Services were Dec. 31, 1999 for Joseph P. Stapleton Jr., 73, of Battle Creek at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Dr. Herbert Johnson officiated with burial in Ida Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Stapleton died Dec. 29 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mr. Stapleton was born Aug. 28, 1926, in Ida County, the son of Joseph and Jane (Hayward) Stapleton Sr. He grew up in the Battle Creek area and graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1943.
He married Donna A. Williams Sept. 23, 1947, in Ida Grove. The couple made their home near Battle Creek where he farmed for many years. He also worked as a truck driver for Godbersen-Smith Construction.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Patrick Lee and Kate Stapleton of Battle Creek; a daughter, Sandra Kay Jepsen of Early; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Gretchen Louderbach of Holstein; three sisters, Mary Rice of Kingsley, Ellen and her husband, Mike Furlich of South Sioux City, Neb., and Rose and her husband, Herbert Hein of Battle Creek.
Paul Burkhardt
Services were Jan. 3, 2000 for Paul J. Burkhardt, 81, of Holstein at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein. Burial was in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery
in Odebolt under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Mr. Burkhardt died Dec. 29, 1999 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Kara Pithan
Services were Dec. 30, 1999 for Kara Kay Pithan, 16, of Danbury at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. The Rev. David Hogan officiated with burial in Danbury Catholic Cemetery
under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton and Danbury.
Ms. Pithan died Dec. 27 as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Danbury.
Ms. Pithan was born Dec. 15, 1983, at Sioux City, the daughter of Greg and Janet (Fitzpatrick) Pithan. She lived her entire life in Danbury. She started school in the kindergarten class at Maple Valley School in Mapleton. She attended Danbury Catholic School through the sixth grade, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto Junior High School in Anthon and was currently a member of the sophomore class at Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto High School in Mapleton.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury where she participated in St. Mary's CCD program. She played softball on the Danbury Little League team throughout her childhood, sharing championship titles with her teammates in the Minors in 1995 and Majors in 1996. She went on to play softball, volleyball and basketball during her junior high and high school days. This school year, she was active as a manager for the Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto High School wrestling team and served on the student council.
Survivors include her parents; a sister, Maggie, at home; her maternal grandmother, Laura Fitzpatrick of Danbury; a paternal grandmother, Helen Pithan of Danbury; her lifelong best buddy, Megan Armstrong of Danbury; and other relatives, neighbors and classmates.
Wayne Raasch
Services were Jan. 3, 2000 for Wayne Alfred Raasch, 89, of Odebolt at First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Charles Bulger officiated with burial in Odebolt Cemetery
under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Raasch died Dec. 29, 1999 at his home.
Mr. Raasch was born April 21, 1910, in Richland Township, near Odebolt, the son of Henry and Josephine (Halboth) Raasch. He was a farmer and supportive of his church, community and the Odebolt Cemetery . He helped Harry Iversen with the Pee Wee square dancers in his earlier years.
He married Elizabeth Love of Arthur on Aug. 1, 1933. The couple lived on a farm in Richland Township until 1978 when they moved to their home in Odebolt. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1983. She died in 1984.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Salem Reformed Church. When it closed, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 477 and a lifetime member of the R.L. Tilton Lodge in Des Moines.
Survivors include a sister and her husband, Caroline and Howard Peterson of Alta; a sister-in-law, Elaine Raasch of Odebolt; a brother-in-law, Wesley Love of Arthur; a niece and her husband, Bonnie and Gerald Mason of Branford, Conn.; three nephews, Robert and his wife, Ann Peterson of Aurelia, Jim Raasch of Odebolt and Dan and his wife, Rachel Love of Arthur; four great-nieces; and a friend, Margaret Meyer of Lake View.
NaDyne Patrick
Memorial services were Jan. 4, 2000 for NaDyne Newman Patrick, 86, of Iowa Falls at First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. The Rev. Sarah Rohret-Odoom officiated with inurnment in Mount Hope Cemetery
in Mapleton under the direction of Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Mrs. Patrick died Dec. 30, 1999 at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Mrs. Patrick was born May 23, 1913, in Mapleton, the daughter of Samuel and Helen (Newman) Nepper. She graduated from Mapleton Community School in 1930. In 1934, she graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. degree in math and physics from Morningside College in Sioux City.
She married Sylvester Joseph Patrick Oct. 16, 1935, at her par-en-t's home in Mapleton. She began teaching at Moorhead in 1964, then in Battle Creek. The family moved to Iowa Falls in 1968. She taught one year at Dumont and the next 10 years at Iowa Falls Junior High School. She retired in 1979. He died in 1986.
She was a member of the Iowa Falls Mothers Club and United Methodist Women.
Survivors include seven sons, Neil Patrick of Hays, Kan., Joel and his wife, Aloma Patrick, of Sioux City, Lynn and his wife, Shirley Patrick, of Earlville, Arlen and his wife, Carol Patrick, of Ames, Galen and his wife, Petie Patrick, of Gowrie, Kyle and his wife, Pam Patrick of Richfield, Minn., and Kevin and his wife, Linda Patrick, of Carroll; six daughters, Sandra and her husband, Lamar Cope of Waukesha, Wis., Pamela Fox of Plantation, Fla., Nancy Patrick of Everly, Amy and her husband, Russell Johnson of Creston, NaDyne and her husband, Larry Meyer, of Garnavillo, and Sara Jane and her husband, Ed Hayward, of Primera, Texas; 34 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Rev. Alfred Pautsch
Memorial services were Jan. 5, 2000 for Rev. Alfred Otto Pautsch, 74, of Rockford at First Evangelical Free Church. The Rev. Brad Soenksen, professor at Lutheran Brethren Seminary, and Rev. Howard Lanphear of First Evangelical Free Church officiated with private graveside services in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery
under the direction of Honquest Family Funeral Services.
Rev. Pautsch died Jan. 1.
Rev. Pautsch was born May 10, 1925, in East Peoria, Ill, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Edward Pautsch. He lived in Athens, Ill., from age three to 18. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years.
He married Ingrid Neteland July 4, 1949. He was a 1951 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill. He served churches in Waverly, Ill., Marshfield, Wis., Ida Grove and DeWitt. He retired in July 1992. Following his retirement from parish ministry, he worked for the Salvation Army for three years and for the Rockford Rescue Mission for four years. He preached in various pulpits in the area, participated in chapel services at Fairhaven Retirement Center and taught Sunday School classes at First Free Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Ruth and Lois; three sons, David, Mark and Joel; 26 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Walter and Arthur Pautsch.
Memorials may be given to the Rockford Rescue Mission or DeWitt Lutheran Fellowship in DeWitt.
Lenora Gries
Services were Jan. 6, 2000 at 11 a.m. for Lenora Dorothy Gries, 100, of Holstein at United Meth-odist Church in Holstein. The Rev. Judith A. Piper will officiate with burial in Holstein Cemetery
under the direction of Barker Fu-neral Home in Holstein.
Mrs. Gries died Jan. 2 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Gries was born Aug. 13, 1899 in Holstein, the son of Adolph and Alma (Blunk) Schmidt. She attended Holstein public school through the eighth grade and later attended a sewing school in Davenport.
She married Otto Gries, Nov. 26, 1919 at her parent's farm in Holstein. She pursued a sewing career for others until her marriage and continued that in her home and for her children. The couple resided in the Holstein vicinity all their lives. He died in 1981. She entered Holstein Good Samaritan Center eight months ago.
She was a member United Methodist Church, Dorcas Circle, Brunch Club, Golden Hour Homemakers, 500 card club, sheepshead club and Senior Citizens Club. She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary where she held various offices and was Ida County president for a term.
Survivors include three daughters, Elaine and her husband, Charles Armiger, of Holstein, Jeanette and her husband, Melvin Bauer, of Holstein and Arlene Flaskey of Brookings, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myra McNichols of Mesa, Ariz. and Henrietta Meier of Cherokee; and many nieces and nephews.
Selma Reimer
