Graveside services for Ben Boger, 97, of Ida Grove, will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at the Grant Township Cemetery near Schleswig, under the direction of the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. There will be no visitation. The Rev. Tom Sabel officiated.
He died May 17, 2003, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove.

He passed away Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.

Merle D. Irwin
Merle D. Irwin, age 75, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Silver Creek United Methodist Church in rural Galva, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Doris Lindley will officiate service, with burial to follow in Galva Township Cemetery East. Friends may call at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Friday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
Born July 2, 1927, in Ida County, Iowa, Merle was the son of Matthew James and Charlotte Lucinda (Moffitt) Irwin. He grew up and received his education in Ida County, graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1945. Merle served in the United States Army during World War II, then returned to Iowa, where he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Jean Trieschman, on September 26, 1948. The couple farmed in Ida County for many years.
Merle was a member of Silver Creek United Methodist Church and the Ben Hur Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and tinkering in his shop. He treasured time spent with his family, and especially appreciated the many winters he and Jean spent in Arizona and Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; three children and their spouses, Jim and Lori Irwin of Arthur, Tom and Jean Irwin of Flower Mound, TX, and Linda and John Sichenze of Oak Hill, VA; eight grandchildren, Mike, Tim, Tracey, and Ali Irwin, James McNatt, Jennifer Kockler, Dan Cotter, and Janalee Woodard; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Donna Irwin of Memphis, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.

Lawrence Nepper
Lawrence "Bud" Nepper, 76, of Ida Grove died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at his residence.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Church of God in Ida Grove. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery . Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Jim Fick
Jim Fick, 63, of Battle Creek died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at his brother's farm in Battle Creek.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery , Battle Creek. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Goldie Hink
Funeral services for Goldie Hink, 86, of Norwalk, Iowa, formerly of Ida Grove, will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove is in charge of arrangements where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. There will be a 7 p.m. Scripture Service.
She passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at Regency Care Center in Norwalk.

Esther Fowler Shotwell
Interment for Esther Fowler Shotwell was Feb. 7, 2003, at Rosecrans National Cemetery.
She died Jan. 26 in San Diego, Calif.
She was born June 28, 1909, to David T. and Genevra (Lewis) Fowler of Battle Creek. Esther Martha was the youngest of six surviving children. Her mother died when she was three.
The family then moved from the farm to town. She was raised by her father, sisters Edith and Mabel and three brothers, David, Gene and Vernon, all deceased.
She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1926. One of her activities was girls' basketball; the team played home games in the opera house. She attended Iowa State College and then worked in Perry and Des Moines, mainly accounting for Woolworth's.
In 1942, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In 1944, she married Robert Shotwell, also in the Army. After the war, they lived in San Diego. Robert survives her there.
They particularly enjoyed the San Diego Zoo, and she was an avid reader. She was a loving, caring wife and, first, a babysitter, and ever the devoted aunt to the following:
Marion (Herman) Dorfman, Bethesda, Md.; Paul Fowler, deceased; Stanley (Mary Lee) Marshall, Portland, Ore.; Gordon (Jean) Marshall, Milwaukee, Wis.; Jeanette Nichols, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Nancy (Grif) Griffiths, Omaha, Neb.; Helen (Whitney) Scully, Woodstock, Va.; Katherine (David) Kramer, Northbrook, Ill.; and Donna (Joe) Burke, San Marcos, Texas.

Helen Schumacher
Helen Mae Schumacher, age 91, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Sunday, February 9, 2003, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2003, at the Church of God in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Reverend Jarol Duerksen will officiate the service, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery . Friends may call at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
Born October 8, 1911, in Correctionville, Iowa, Helen was the daughter of Albert and Jessie (Croxell) Mahin. She graduated from Correctionville High School with her Normal teacher's training certificate in 1928.
On December 29, 1928, Helen was united in marriage to Lester Raymond Schumacher in Ida Grove. The couple farmed in the Cushing, Correctionville, and Battle Creek areas. In 1949, they made their home on a farm south of Ida Grove, where they continued farming until Lester's death in 1970. Helen then moved into Ida Grove, where she was employed for many years at Farley's Clothing. She most recently resided at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Helen was a member of the Church of God in Ida Grove. She enjoyed writing poetry, dancing, crossword puzzles, and playing cards with family and friends. She will always be remembered for being a part of the special times in the lives of her family.
Survivors include three children and their spouses, Jim and Beverlyn Schumacher of Ida Grove, Beverly and Delbert Hupke of Battle Creek, and Judee and Wayne Schumann of Anthon; thirteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille "Babe" Eckert of Sioux City.
In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jary Schumacher; two grandsons, John and Monty Hupke; four brothers, Kenneth, Alva "Shorty", Gerald "Buck", and Lee "Hiney" Mahin; and two sisters, Ione Schumacher and Evelyn Robinson.

Russell W. Gray
Russell W. Gray, 90, of Holstein died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holstein United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery , Washta, Iowa, with a Masonic service conducted by the Little Sioux Masonic Lodge 521. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will resume 8:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church in Holstein.

Fern Willmerling Ellgen
Fern Ellgen, 90, of Storm Lake passed away on Thursday March 27, 2003 at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Memorial Services will be on Monday March 31, 2003 at 2:00pm at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Little Sioux Valley Cemetery , Rembrandt, Iowa at 3:45 pm.

Viola M. "Vi" Barnes
Viola M. "Vi" Barnes, 82, of Mapleton died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery , Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Viola Marie Barnes was born May 26, 1920, in Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Augusta (Henshen) Pranschke. She was baptized July 11, 1920, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She grew up and was educated in the area.

On July 27, 1940, in Denison, Iowa, she married Chester Minor Barnes of Ute, Iowa. They then lived and raised their family in Mapleton. Chester died in April 1988.
She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Women. She developed a talent for embroidering, which she enjoyed along with watching "Wheel of Fortune". But her best times were those spent with her family.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include three sons and their wives, Ron and Rose Barnes of Sioux City, Don and Myra Barnes of Mesa, Ariz., and Rick and Denise Barnes of Defiance, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Judy and Roger Furne of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Jolene and Dick Streck of Schleswig, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herb Pranschke of Sioux City and Ed Pranschke of Denison, Iowa; and several other relatives, neighbors and good friends.
Along with her husband, she also was preceded in death by her parents; three sons, Kenneth, Gary and Terry; a great-grandson, Geoffrey Barnes; two brothers, Martin and Bob Pranschke; two sisters, Clara Pitts and Lucille Hesse; and a very special friend whose company she enjoyed, Leonard Jungen.

David D. Bennett
David D. Bennett, age 85 of Rembrandt, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Rembrandt with Reverend Emily Allen officiating. Interment will be in the Little Sioux Valley Cemetery in rural Rembrandt. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2003, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.
David D. Bennett was born July 12, 1917, to Dresden Jasper Bennett and Ruth N. (Bleakly) Bennett in Ida County, Iowa. He married Lucille Christina Skov on February 7, 1942. To this union four children were born; Ruth, Joyce, Jewel and Dick. Lucille died September 17, 1970. On the 25th of September 1976, David married Joyce Ellen Ginkens. To this union two children were born: JaMae and Aletha.
He attended both Iowa State College and Buena Vista College, and during World War II served in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge he returned to farm, seven miles south of Schaller, where he was also employed at the Woodke Machine Shop. In 1960, he moved to Rembrandt and was employed by Skov Trucking and Lumber. He was also a self-employed carpenter, and ran the Rembrandt Sewer and Water Treatment Plant.
David organized both the Cub and Boy Scouts in Rembrandt, serving as leader for many years and attaining Order of the Arrow status. He was a member of Silver Creek Methodist Church, he was a Sunday School teacher, a 4-H leader for thirteen years, a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, a member of the Saddle Club, and was a square dance instructor. During his life he enjoyed horseback riding, square dancing, fishing, camping, reading and attending Rendezvous' and Living History events with his son Dick.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; one sister, Elsie Christiansen and her husband Arthur.
David is survived by his wife, Joyce of Rembrandt; daughters; Ruth McNeece and husband Bob of Port Angelos, WA, Joyce Fisher and husband Ron of Dexter, IA, and Jewel Kruckman and husband Al of Albert City, IA; son, Dick Bennett and wife Jen of Rembrandt; daughters, JaMae Bennett of Sutherland, IA, and Aletha Bennett of Sioux City, IA; step-daughter, Dena Ginkens of Arizona; and Randie Ginkens of Rembrandt; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister MaryRuth Campbell and husband Verne of Storm Lake, IA; brother-in-law, Emmet Skov and wife Viola of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law, Harry Ginkens of Marion, IA; and sister-in-law, Shirley Jones of St. Paul, MN; along with many other friends and relatives.

Elsie J. Albers
Elsie J. Albers, 94, of Holstein died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Good Samaritan Home in Holstein following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Holstein Cemetery . There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Lorna Mae Petersen Aldag
Services for Lorna Mae Aldag, 56, were June 23, 2003, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Kearney. The Rev. Russell Sommerfeld officiated
Private inurnment will be at a later date. The Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma, Neb., was in charge.
She died June 19 at Huntley, Neb., from injuries sustained in a car accident three miles north of Huntley, while enroute to work in Kearney, Neb.
Lorna Mae Aldag was the only child of Elnora Fredericka (Knudsen) and Lorenz August Petersen. She was born Oct. 13, 1946, at Battle Creek.
She was baptized Nov. 3, 1946, in the rural Grant Lutheran Church near Schleswig. She later was confirmed March 26, 1961, in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Schleswig.
She attended schools at Schleswig, where she graduated from high school with the class of 1964. After high school, Lorna attended the National Business College in Sioux City. She completed numerous classes with the American Banking Association.
On Dec. 5, 1965, she was united in marriage to James Henry Aldag at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. To this union, two sons were born: Travis James and Troy Alan. The Aldags resided on the family farms near Ida Grove, in Ida County, where "Jim" farmed and Lorna worked as a secretary in the shipping department of GOMACO. They moved into Schleswig in 1990.
They moved to Kearney, Neb., in April 1994, and Lorna became employed at Builders Warehouse and as secretary and bookkeeper of the family business, Countryside Construction. In 1999, Lorna became employed at the Kearney State Bank, where she was the head teller. The Aldags had moved to the VanDyke farmstead northwest of Huntley in December 2001.
Lorna was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. Her hobbies were gardening, raising puppies and horses. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Lorna recently had surgery and been treated for cancer and was on the road to recovery.
She leaves to mourn her passing her loving and devoted husband "Jim" of their rural home north of Alma; two sons: Travis of rural Ida Grove and Troy and wife Michele of Vernon, Conn.; and four grandchildren: Austin and Melissa Aldag at home with their father in Ida Grove and Casey and Cailyn Aldag at home with their parents in Vernon, Conn.
Additional survivors include her mother, Elnora (Knudsen) Petersen of Schleswig; her father-in-law, Theodore "Theo" Aldag of Schleswig; two sisters-in-law, Janice Winsor of Kearney, Neb., and JoAnn Clausen and husband Larry of Schleswig; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1990, her mother-in-law, Leona Aldag; and a brother-in-law, John "Jack" Winsor.
A memorial fund has been established to the American Cancer Society, Omaha, Neb.
