Cathleen B. "Kate" Janssen
Services for Cathleen B. "Kate" Janssen, 90, of Cherokee and a former longtime resident of Ida Grove, will be June 28, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery at Holstein, under the direction of Greenwood Funeral Home of Cherokee.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.
She died June 21 following a brief illness.
Mrs. Janssen was born March 18, 1913, in Logan Township, Ida County, to Clifton and Cora (Nicholson) Conover. She was educated in country school and later graduated from Holstein High School.
While in high school, she ran on the first track team in the school's history. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City and received her teaching certificate.
Kate taught rural school, all by herself, that included grades K-8. The classes included some German students who had little understanding of the English language.
On June 4, 1936, she married Richard Omino "Dick" Janssen in rural Ida Grove. Kate took on many other jobs during her life, including working at the Holstein Advance as the offset machine operator and also serving as a nurse's aide in the Ida Grove hospital. She and Dick also farmed for many years.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ida Grove for many years, where she was involved with Lutheran Church Circle and the Lutheran Ladies' Aid. Upon moving to Cherokee, she transferred her membership to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. She also was a member of the Lone Star Homemakers.
Kate enjoyed her grandchildren, sports, birdwatching, cooking, reading, flowers and gardening. She passed these passions to her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Martin and husband, Dr. Robert, of Cherokee and Faye Greenway and husband, Chuck, of Independence, Mo.; and a son, Steven Janssen and wife, Glenda, of Plano, Texas.
Additional survivors include a brother, Tom Conover and wife Shirley of Holstein, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on July 5, 1985; two brothers, Cornelius and Alex; two sisters, May Bell and Jeanne; and one great-grandchild.

Margaret Bennett
Margaret Eileen Bennett, age 83, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove.
An Order of Eastern Star service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Schaller, Iowa. A luncheon will follow the service, and at 1:00 p.m. a Memorial Service will be held at the church, all under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes, Ida Grove. The Reverend Carol Gailey will officiate the service, with inurnment to follow in the Schaller Cemetery.
Born May 31, 1920, in Sioux City, Iowa, Margaret was the daughter of Frank D. and Minnie (Butcher) Reed. She grew up and received her education in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School in 1938. Margaret furthered her education at the University of South Dakota, where she graduated in 1941, and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and the Mortar Board Scholastic Society.
Margaret began teaching high school Home Economics and Mathematics in Arthur, Washta, and Yankton, South Dakota. On May 23, 1944, she was united in marriage to Willis Alvin Bennett in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple made their home near Schaller, where they farmed and raised their family. Margaret resumed teaching when her children were older, first at Galva and later at Crestland of Early.
She was an active member of the Schaller United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Horn AuxSilliary Clowns. Margaret also was a 60-year member and past matron of the Arthur Order of Eastern Star #471.
Survivors include three children, Diane Jensen and husband Larry of Starbuck, MN, Dennis Bennett of Schaller, and Cynthia Dodge and husband Paul of Chesterfield, MO; six grandchildren, Michael Jensen and wife Renae, Matthew Jensen and fiancée Miranda Jameson, Cindy Ruth Freed and husband Brian; and Michelle, Jason, and Benjamin Dodge; a great-grandson, Mitchell Jensen; and a brother, Bruce Reed of Littleton, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Willis in 1999; and a son, David.

DaNelle Groote
DaNelle Groote
Services for DaNelle Groote, 48, of Wellsburg, formerly of Ida Grove, will be 1:30 Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg. The Rev. Todd Rempe will officiate. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg, under the direction of Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
She died Aug. 24, 2003, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, cause of death pending an autopsy.

Kathleen L. Greenwald
Kathleen L. Greenwald, 78, of Fonda, Iowa, formerly of Battle Creek, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Fonda Nursing Home.
Memorial services will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. Arrangements are being handled by Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Battle Creek.

Elaine Ehlen
Elaine C. Ehlen, age 73, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2003, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends John Schauer and Gary Scharrer will officiate the service, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery . Friends may call at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Friday from 3-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
Born November 25, 1930, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Elaine Carol Ehlen was the daughter of Walter and Evelyn (Kiertzner) Rehse. She was baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove.
Elaine graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1948. She was employed at the Haase Pharmacy in Ida Grove for a time, and in July, 1951, married Bob U. Hall in Ida Grove. The couple made their home on an acreage east of Ida Grove. Elaine owned and operated the "Bo-Peep," a children's dress shop. It was later sold and she and Bob moved to Anoka, Minnesota, where Elaine worked at Federal Cartridge Corporation for several years. Bob passed away in 1966.
Elaine married Francis Ehlen on December 27, 1969. One son, Karl, was born to this union. Fran had two sons, Mark and Donald, whom Elaine helped raise. After her separation from Francis, Elaine returned to Ida Grove in 1991.
Elaine loved working in her back yard, gardening and tending her flowers. She knitted many beautiful sweaters, scarves, dishrags, and baby caps for newborns. She liked playing cards in the card marathon, as well as cooking and canning. Elaine was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, where she participated in the Ladies Circle.
Survivors include her son, Karl Ehlen and wife Erin of New Smyrna Beach, FL; two step-sons, Mark Ehlen and wife Roberta of Champlain, MN, and Donald Ehlen of Seattle, WA; a step-grandson, Cory; a brother and his wife, Walter and Janet Rehse of Ida Grove; three sisters, DeLoris Stewart of Ida Grove, Rheta Negless and husband Gaylen of Anoka, MN, and Mary Corbin and husband Al of Ida Grove; as well as other relatives and friends.

Mae Aukerman
Services for Mae Aukerman, 93, formerly of Cedar Rapids, are today (Wednesday) at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Hess will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery , under the direction of Teahen Funeral Home.
She died Nov. 30, 2003, in Keokuk after a short illness.

Agnes Treiber
Services for Agnes Treiber, 80, of Battle Creek will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery . Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday), with a rosary at 4 p.m., at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
She died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Born July 31, 1923, in rural Danbury, Iowa, Agnes Matilda Treiber was the daughter of Otto and Emma (Wunsche) Thul. She grew up and received her education in rural Danbury. On Jan. 25, 1950, she married Leo Treiber at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. The couple farmed many years near Danbury. Leo passed away July 7, 1991.
Agnes was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, and was a retired member of the Rosary Society. She enjoyed baking, crocheting and birdwatching and will be remembered as a devoted farm wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She especially appreciated visits from her family.
Survivors include six children, Katie Weston and husband, Art, Doris Shoultz and husband Darrell, all of Sioux City, Anne Beery and husband Bruce of Battle Creek, Betty Treiber of Battle Creek, Linda Allaman of Keota, and John Treiber of Danbury; 17 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Dose of Anthon; a sister-in-law, Mary Dirksen of Danbury; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends. In addition to her husband, Agnes was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers, Helmut, Emil, Henry, Harry, Otto Jr. and George Thul.

Wanda Schramm
Wanda Schramm, age 84, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Monday, December 8, 2003, at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2003, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends John Schauer and Gary Scharrer will officiate the service, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery . Friends may call at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
Born August 19, 1919, in Corydon, Iowa, Wanda was the daughter of Rex Homer and Vera (Cobb) Little. She grew up and received her education in Ida Grove, graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1938. Wanda married Edward Jepsen on February 8, 1939. Edward died on December 27, 1965. On December 4, 1968, Wanda was married to Louis Huseman. He later died.
Wanda was employed in the laundry department at Horn Memorial Hospital for several years, then worked as a nurses aide. On September 4, 1976, she was united in marriage to Raymond R. Schramm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Raymond passed away on October 26, 1998.
Wanda was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, where she was active in her circle and quilted with the Dorcas Society. She enjoyed crafts, playing Bingo, crocheting, and playing cards.
Survivors include five children, Robert (Lillian) Jepsen of Britton, SD, Janice (Merle) Rupert of Ida Grove, Roger (Edna) Jepsen of Munford, TN, Rick (Tammey) Jepsen of Danbury, and Randy Rex Jepsen of Aberdeen, SD; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Jepsen; two grandsons; and a brother, Ralph Little.

Max Vernon Bell
Max Vernon Bell, 77, of Galva, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Services will be on Friday, February 6th at 10:30 at St. John Lutheran Church Galva, Iowa with Pastor Paul Egger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 5, 2-8:00 pm with the family present 6-8:00pm at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Max was born July 12,1926 to Lester and Maude (Stauffer) Bell near Moville, Iowa. He received his education at a country school northwest of Danbury.
On June 9, 1946, Max was united in Marriage to Ida Fick at Danbury, Iowa. This union was blessed with a son, Charles and two daughters, Barbara and Susan.
Max was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, Iowa where he served as a trustee for 6 years, cemetery custodian for 3 years, and was a voting member.
Max worked at Kyser Ship Building, U.S. Steel Co. and Wilson Trailer, but his greatest joy was when he started to farm in 1954. He retired in 1986 when his son took over the farming operation. Although retired, his passion for farming kept him involved with his son until he became ill in 2000. In 1992 Max and his wife moved into Galva. Max enjoyed fishing, visiting with people, and had a smile for everyone.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Ida of 57 years of Galva; his children, Barbara and husband David Hayes of Nora Springs, Iowa, Charles and his special friend Julie of Schaller, Susan and husband Rick O'Hara of Mequon, Wisconsin; three grandchildren David Hayes Jr and his wife Lawanda of the Air Force Base at Altus, OK, Matthew Hayes and his wife Jessica of the Air Force Base at Omaha, NE, Susan Hayes of Omaha, NE; Three great grandchildren, Madalyn Hayes, twins David Hayes lll and Danielle Hayes; two step great grandchildren, Dedrick and Jasmine Cannon; one sister, Ellie Mohrhauser of Danbury and many nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends. Max will be missed by everyone.
Preceding Max in death were his parents; 4 brothers, George, Marion, Gordon, Lester Jr. and a sister Arlene.
In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in the name of Max Vernon Bell.

Donald Pearson
Services for Donald Pearson, 85, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City and Ida Grove, were this morning (Wednesday) at Eternal Life Lutheran Church in Mesa. The Melcher Mission Chapel in Mesa, Ariz., was in charge of arrangements.
He died March 30, 2004, in Mesa.
Mr. Pearson served on the board of education in Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lola; in-laws Eldora Wiedemann and Morelle and Darlene Christiansen, all of Ida Grove; Charles Gemmill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Agnes Buehler, Anna Mae Gemmill and Leone Hargens; and three brothers: Herb, Lee and Lloyd.
