MABEL E. MELLEM-MAIN
GRAND MEADOW, Minn. - Mabel E. Mellem-Main, 87, died Tuesday evening (Jan. 30, 2001) at Stewartville Care Center, Stewartville, Minn.
A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Church in Grand Meadow, Minn., with the Rev. Tom Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hindt Hutchins Funeral Home, Grand Meadow, and at the church one hour before the service Saturday.

Mabel Eldora Furness was born July 29, 1913, in Banks, N. D., where her parents homesteaded. The family moved to a farm near Hanlontown in 1922.
She married Harold E. Mellem in 1930. They farmed near Northwood and Rock Falls for 13 years and then moved near Grand Meadow in 1955. They farmed there until 1972. They were divorced in 1972. She married Ralph Main in July 1973.
Mabel is survived by three children, Carole (JW) Pagett, Ventura, Calif., Betty Knoepke-Adams, Overland Park, Kan., and Harold Jr. (Katharina) Mellem, Rochester, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jennie (Burton) Aasland, Mason City, Evelyn (Harold) Klein, Albuquerque, N.M., Dorothy Schulte, Albert Lea, Minn., and Helen Kingland-Hanks-Balfe, Nevis, Minn.

Mabel was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold E. Mellem, in November 1977; her second husband, Ralph Main, in April 1991; her daughter, Joan Russell-Wyatt, in December 1986; a grandson, Dan Russell, in 1999; five brothers; and six sisters.

LILLIAN C. ROGERS
NORTHWOOD - Lillian C. Rogers, 86, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) at her residence in Northwood.
A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Northwood United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Norway Township Cemetery , rural Kanawha.

MILDRED J. (MRS. FRANK) HANNA
MASON CITY - Mildred J. (Mrs. Frank) Hanna, 92, formerly of 501 S. Tennessee Place, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 125 E. State, Mason City.
There will be no visitation.

HELEN HAUGEN
OSAGE - Helen Haugen, 90, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be at Osage Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church Saturday.

MILDRED MARIE RYAN
BURLINGTON - Mildred Marie Ryan, 82, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lunning Chapel, 2620 Mount Pleasant St., Burlington, with her sons, the Rev. E. Wayne Ryan and the Rev. Larry Ryan, officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Cemetery.
Friends may call after 8 a.m. today at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
A memorial has been establish for Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd St. S.W., Mason City.
Mildred Marie Ryan was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Burlington, daughter of William H. and Mary Penrod Timmerman.
On Feb. 9, 1935, she married Everrett R. Ryan in Burlington. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1983.
They were blessed with seven children: E. Wayne Ryan and wife, Elda, of Mason City, Charlene Crilley and husband, David, of Stoutsville, Mo., Ronald Ryan and wife, Renae, of Wichita, Kan., Marilyn Wischmeier and her husband, Glen, of Burlington, Barbara Cummings, deceased, Larry Ryan and his wife, Gayla, of Wichita, Kan., and Robert Ryan and his wife, Paula, of Burlington.
Mildred is survived by four brothers, Fredrick and Robert Timmerman of Burlington, Jack Timmerman of Stuart, Fla., and Harry Timmerman of Palm City, Fla. She has two living sisters, Ruby Stevens of Fredricksburg, Texas, and Dorothy Rodin of Xenia, Ohio.
She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Three brothers preceded her in death, Harold, Willis and George Timmerman.
Mildred has been a member of the Free Methodist Church.
She worked as unit leader for Stanley Home Products, Montgomery Wards, I.A.A.P. and retired from J.C. Penney's in 1991.
Mildred went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 82 years of age at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
Mildred Ryan was like a woman described in Proverbs 31-"Who can find a virtuous woman, for her price is far above rubies. Her children arise up and call her blessed."

EVELYN CAROL SORENSON

HANLONTOWN - EVELYN CAROL Sorenson, 79, of rural Hanlontown, died Monday (March 19, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery , rural Hanlontown.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her name to Grace Lutheran Church, Special Projects Fund.

Evelyn C. Sorenson was born March 26, 1921, to Samuel and Mildred (Stuckey) Gooden, at Britt. She received her education in country schools through sixth grade. She attended junior high in Hanlontown and graduated as an adult from North Central Community High School in Manly.

She was united in marriage to Kelmer Sorenson on Aug. 14, 1937. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown.

She was active throughout the years as a Sunday school teacher, a member of W.E.L.C.A., a church council member and a member of the church circles.

She was director for six years at the Worth County Children's Development Center in Kensett and was director for two years at the Children's Garden in Northwood, which she helped to organize.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years, Kelmer, of rural Hanlontown; one daughter, Deloris Downs, and husband, Dan, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; one son, Lynn, and wife, Cynthia, of rural Hanlontown; five grandchildren, Stacey Lunsford and husband, Victor, Joel Lemmerman and wife, Leah, Jamie Sorenson and wife, Angela, Michelle Gobrecht and husband, Duane, and Christina Sorenson; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kyra Sorenson, Drew Lunsford, Jake Gobrecht and Shelby and Courtney Lemmerman; one sister, Lavon; one brother, Sam Gooden and wife, Rita; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.

BEVERLY EWENS

DUMONT - Beverly Ewens, 62, of Dumont, died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at the Dumont Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery . Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, is in charge of arrangements.

ERVEY W. SMITH

CLEAR LAKE - Ervey W. Smith, 88, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (March 17, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Gary Johnson, hospice chaplain, officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Ervey W. Smith.

Ervey was born Feb. 12, 1913, in Kendallville, the son of Charles D. and Adelle (Reuter) Smith. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1932.

Ervey married Nellie Mae Olson in 1936. His long sales career began in 1934 with Singer Sewing Machine in Mason City. He continued to manage Singer stores in various cities until he acquired his own retail store, Smith-Herzog Sewing Center in Marshalltown, in 1947. Erv was the organizer and first president of the Independent Sewing Machine Dealers of America. He formed Anker Corp. of Iowa and the Tall Corn Distributing Co. in 1952.

After selling his businesses in 1956, Erv and Nell moved to Clear Lake in 1957, where they lived at 2611 S. Lakeview Drive for 41 years. Erv's career continued with regional sales manager work for Viking Sewing Machine, Minneapolis, Minn. His retirement in 1978 allowed motor home travel to Texas and Arizona, in addition to his lakeside enjoyment and expert hunting in Canada and the West. His family was his priority.

After moving from their home, Erv and Nell resided at Willow Pointe Assisted Living and the I.O.O.F. Home. Erv's final residence was Good Shepherd Health Center.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Ervey is survived by three children, Larry A. Smith of Las Vegas, Nev., Carolyn A. Freeman and her husband, Fredric, of Boulder, Colo., and Douglas C. Smith and his wife, Patricia, of Lisle, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Lyndon B. Smith and his wife, Rose, of Las Vegas, Nev., Robin E. Holmlund and her husband, Brian, of Canton, Mich., Kurt A. Smith of West Yellowstone, Mont., Christopher B. Smith and his wife, Andrea, of Frederick, Md., Marc K. Freeman of Boulder, Colo., Karin M. Freeman of Sacramento, Calif., and Stacy S. Schick and her husband Rodd, of Lisle, Ill.; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vera Roberts, of Stockton, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nellie Mae Smith, April 5, 2000; and one brother, Harland D. Smith.

JOHN COLBY THOMPSON

FOREST CITY - Memorial services for a former Forest City business leader, John Colby Thompson, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating.

Mr. Thompson, 80, died unexpectedly March 2 (2001) at his residence in Kirkland, Wash. Death was attributed to heart failure.

He was a member of a Forest City banking and real estate development family that could trace its roots back to Robert Clark, the founder of Forest City. He started working for his father's real estate and insurance agency in 1932 while attending Forest City High School.

Thompson graduated from Forest City High School in 1938 and began working with his father full time. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1942, and served throughout the North Africa campaign. He was discharged in 1945 with a staff sergeant rating.

In Forest City and the state of Iowa, Thompson was active in many ways. He was leader in the organization and operation of the present Forest City Golf Club, serving on the club's board of directors for many years. He held offices for the Republican party at city, county and district levels.

Because of his lifelong interest in hunting and fishing, Thompson served on the Winnebago County Conservation Board and was appointed by Gov. Robert D. Ray to serve on the Iowa State Conservation Commission from 1973-79. Through his work on the commission, he was given the opportunity to join the Defense Orientation Conference Association, a group of civic leaders from across the nation which meets annually at a military post to better understand the work of the military. Thompson was a member of the Forest City Masonic Lodge and of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine chapter in Des Moines. He was a member of the Forest City American Legion post and the Leland VFW post and of the Forest City United United Methodist Church.

He retired in 1984, selling his insurance and real estate business to Joe A. and Jean DeBoest. Later he became office manager for his nephew, Ralph Thompson, in Cincinnati, Ohio. When the nephew sold his business, Thompson retired again.

Thompson was one of five children of Merle M. and M'Dora Thompson, and was born in Forest City on April 9, 1920. He married Clara Elizabeth Peterson, of Buffalo Center, on Sept. 2, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Thompson died unexpectedly on July 31, 1964.

Survivors include a son, Robert P. Thompson and his wife, Cynthia, and a granddaughter, Clarissa, all of Forest City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara; two brothers, Clark Thompson and Philip Thompson; and two sisters, Lucille Zebarth and Margaret McGuire.

Mr. Thompson, whose body was cremated, will be interred in the family plot in Oakland Cemetery in the spring.

RICEVILLE - Marie E. Lubbert, 88, of Riceville, died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Riceville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville.

MARTHA SCHWARZ

LAKOTA - Martha Schwarz, 86, of Lakota, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Lakota, with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery , Lakota.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center.
