GENE MERLE VEST
CLEAR LAKE - Gene Merle Vest, 76, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (March 31, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday April 3, 1999 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis, of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Columberium, Highway 18, Mason City.
Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the Chapel.
Gene Merle Vest was born on Oct. 23, 1922, in Harlan, the son of Everett and Laura (McGee) Vest. He attended and received his education in the Defiance School System, graduating from Defiance High School. After completing his schooling, he was inducted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 17, 1942, at Camp Dodge, serving overseas in the European Theater during World War II, until his honorable discharge on Nov. 4, 1945, at Fort Knox, Ky.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Lindsley on May 9, 1946, in Carol. After their marriage together they owned and operated "Farmers Produce" in Madrid for several years, he drove a truck for the U.S. Postal Service in Madrid for four years, worked for SMB driving charter buses in Des Moines for five years, owned and operated the "Frontier Restaurant in Perry for 17 years, worked for Winnebago Industry in Forest City driving Winnebago's, and worked for Field Stone Cabinetry in Northwood until his retirement in 1995.
He enjoyed playing pool, watching T.V., sports and traveling, but his great love and enjoyment was his wife, family and grandchildren.
He was a Methodist by faith.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Ruth Vest, of Clear Lake; five children, Romona Cushman of Minneapolis, Donald Vest and his wife, Sherri, of Des Moines, Jo Ann "Jodie" Lewerke and her husband, Dennis, of Clear Lake, Dean Vest of Camdenton, Mo., and Dale Vest and his wife, Jean, of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Janice, of Ankeny; one sister, June Murray and her husband, Walter, of Irwin; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis Vest; and two brothers, Dale and Howard Vest.

LEONA PEARL BAUM
CLEAR LAKE - Mrs. Leona Pearl Baum, 84, of Penelope Retirement Home, Ankeny, formerly of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (March 30, 1999) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery , Clear Lake.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour before services on Friday at the church.
The family suggests memorials to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura.
Leona was born May 17, 1914, in Swea City, the daughter of John James and Katie Pearl (King) Patterson. She graduated from Grant Consolidated High School near Swea City, and then continued her education at the Iowa Beauty School, Des Moines.
Leona was a beauty operator for over 42 years, having shops in Lakota, Ames, Nevada, Garner and Clear Lake, retiring in 1977. She moved to Clear Lake in 1958.
Leona enjoyed crafts and quilt making. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ankeny, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, American Legion and Clear Lake Senior Citizens and Ankeny Senior Citizens.
Leona is survived by three children, William James Baum and his wife, Marjorie, of Clive, Suzanne Joy Auxier and her husband, Larry, of Des Moines, and Marva Lee Sheriff and her husband, Jeffrey, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, John Baum, Joseph Baum, Julianne Sarcone, Marianne Brown, Kristin Love, Eric Auxier, Gregg Auxier, Aaron Sheriff, Ryan Sheriff and Mark Sheriff; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Streiff and her husband, Haven, of Eyota, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1980, and three brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ankeny.

ST. ANSGAR - Clarence Gaylord Skjeveland, 92, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (March 31, 1999) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery , Northwood.

LAKE MILLS - Grace V. Walle, 86, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday (March 31, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minn. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
