GEORGE C. PAPPAS

MASON CITY - George C. Pappas, 58, of 230 Fifth St. N.E., died Friday (April 16, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery , with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

LARRY W. LEVERENZ

HAMPTON - Larry William Leverenz, 55, of Hampton, died Thursday (April 15, 1999) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24 at the Dike United Methodist Church in Dike with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery , Dike.

There will be no visitation. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, is in charge of arrangements.

WILLARD K. PEIL

ALEXANDER - Willard K. Peil, 81, of Alexander, died Friday (April 16, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Reformed Church with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

LELAND LARSON

EMMETSBURG - Leland Larson, 82, of Emmetsburg, died Wednesday (April 14, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Emmetsburg, with the Rev. Steve Ellerbusch officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Emmetsburg.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, 704 Grand Ave., Emmetsburg.

Leland Alton Larson, son of D. Alice (Lundene) and Elmer Larson, was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Osage, Iowa. He graduated from Osage High School.

On Feb. 27, 1942, Leland and Margaret Helen Brown were married in Osage, Iowa. After their marriage, they worked in a defense plant in Hutchinson, Kans., making aircraft parts. On Aug. 1, 1943, they purchased the Emmetsburg Produce, which he operated until the mid-1960s. After leaving the produce business, he established the Interstate Saving Center, which was later sold and became Wentzel's Farm and Home. In addition to these businesses, Leland also farmed in Palo Alto and Floyd counties.

Leland was active in the community, serving on the Emmetsburg City Council, Emmetsburg Community School Board, Bethany Lutheran Church Council, Lions Club and the Sons of Norway. He enjoyed piloting small airplanes, reading and traveling.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda, and her husband, Lon Twait, of Emmetsburg, and Diane and her husband, Woodie Haynes, of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Amy Twait of New Ulm, Minn., Tyson Twait of Emmetsburg, Erica Sloan of Omaha, Neb., and Stacey Sloan of Omaha; a brother, Donald Larson of Osage; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1996; his parents; and two brothers, Kenneth Larson and Melbourne Larson.

CHARLES R. COLBY

MASON CITY - Charles R. Colby, 83, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday (April 13, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer Hernes officiating. Military rites will be performed at the church by members of V.F.W. Post No. 6779 of Northwood.

There will be no visitation. The body will be donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City.

Memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church in memory of Charles R. Colby.

Mr. Colby was born Aug. 27, 1915, near Lake Mills, the son of Ralph and Christine (Johnson) Colby. He graduated from Kensett High School in 1935. Before entering the U.S. Army in May of 1941, he was a producer-dealer with the Cedar Valley Produce Company of Osage.

Charles was overseas during World War II for three of his four and a half years with the 168th Infantry, 34th Division of the Rainbow Regiment. Six months of that time, he was a volunteer with the British Commandos. They landed in the original landing at Algiers to harass German troops behind their lines. Upon victory in Africa, he served in Italy where they cracked the Gothic line. He was an infantry man and served as a rifleman, radio operator and driver. He received a Purple Heart and earned the European Theater Ribbon with four battle stars. He was in actual battle for more than 400 days. He was one of the few of the original soldiers of the 168th Infantry, 34th Division, to return home alive.

Upon returning home, he was employed at the Jacob E. Decker and Sons Meat Packing Plant in Mason City.

Charles was united in marriage to Bernice Olsen of Kensett on Aug. 27, 1947, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett, with the Rev. Thor Sigmond officiating.

In 1948, the Colbys began farming on her parents' farm near Bolan. Their farm has been a Century Farm of Iowa since 1976. Due to skin and allergy problems that developed, he was forced to rent out the land. Ten years before his retirement, he was self-employed, hauling fuel for Worth County Co-op Oil in Northwood.

Through the years he served on various committees, among them the Building Committee of Bethany Lutheran Church and Kensett Community Low Rent Housing Project. He and his wife had the pleasure of traveling through their working years. They traveled in all 50 states and all but one province in Canada, and made two trips to Mexico plus 24 days in Europe. After their retirement, they spent a winter in each state of California, Texas and Florida. The following 10 years, six months of every year were spent in Apache Junction, Ariz.

Charles' retirement hobbies included rock polishing, furniture refinishing, clock making, both rock slabs and wood, and making large 100-light Christmas balls, all of which he loved to share with others.

Charles was registered internationally as a clown named "Chuckles." Most of his public service as a clown was performed in Arizona and in Iowa.

Charles and his wife moved from their Century Farm to The Willows in 1990 and most recently had been living at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Charles is survived by his wife, Bernice V. Colby, of Mason City; son, David Colby and his wife, Darlene, of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Ruth Miller and her husband, David, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jeanette (Colby) Smith, Jeffrey Colby, Jerry Colby, Bryan Stone and Cindy Schlundt-Bodine; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Smith, Jolene Smith, Justina Smith, Dustin Colby, Danielle Colby, Megan Colby, Steven Colby, Allison King, Aaron Stone, Adam Stone, Breanna Stone, Brody Stone, Carissa Stone and David Schlundt-Bodine; one sister, Alice Winkler, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and several foster children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gerhard; and one sister, Rachel Stahl.

LOUELLA JUNE TAYLOR

MASON CITY - Louella June Taylor, 85, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday (April 20, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and until time of services on Friday.

Louella June Taylor was born June 26, 1913, in Sibley, to George Sr. and Verna (Kruger) Busse. She attended country school near Sibley. Louella worked at the Tagney Hotel in Spencer for several years.

On Sept. 17, 1947, Louella married Lyle H. Taylor in Mason City. They moved between Mason City and Spencer several times as his work with the railroad required. In 1967, they settled in Mason City, where she worked out of her home as a seamstress.

Louella was a member of First Baptist Church and Circle 6 of the church. She was also a member of the Milwaukee Railroad Women's Club and the Moose.

She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, gardening and watching birds.

Her family includes her daughter, Lila Taylor, of Mason City; her grandchildren, Shane, Jarod and Shauna; brothers-in-law, Carlos Taylor and his wife, Lillian, of Marshalltown, and Virgil Taylor and his wife, Ingeborg, of Albert Lea, Minn.; sister-in-law, Leona Taylor, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and five brothers.

LORAN LAVERNE HADLEY

ROWAN - Loran LaVerne Hadley, 83, died Tuesday (April 20, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery , Rowan.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Loran, the son of Herbert and Mabel (Drury) Hadley, was born Aug. 16, 1915, at Belmond. He grew up in the Rowan and Belmond areas where he attended school, graduating from Belmond High School in 1932.

Loran was united in marriage to Esther Marie Antionette Betz on June 20, 1942, in Maynard. The couple made their home near Rowan, where Loran farmed. Esther passed away July 8, 1955. Loran was united in marriage to Marladean Stadtlander on Dec. 30, 1958, at her parent's home. They made their home near Rowan, where Loran continued to farm. Loran was a salesman for Pioneer Seed Corn, selling for the company for more than 30 years. Loran farmed his entire life and never really retired. His heart was always in farming. He was a lover of animals, most notably horses and exotic poultry. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and accumulated an extensive collection over the last 10 years.

Loran was an active member of his community. He served the 4-H over 25 years, was on the Wright County ASCS Committee for 37 years, was a Midwest Genetics board member, and served on the Wright County FHA board. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Rowan Apartments, and also a member of the Rowan Lions Club. An active member of the United Church of Rowan, Loran sang in the choir, served as Sunday school superintendent, and also kept busy with other committees in the church.

Loran is survived by his wife, Marladean; one daughter, Tracy Gabrielson and her husband, Randy, of Belmond; two sons, LaVerne and his wife, Mary, of Hampton, and Kevin and his wife, Betty, of Rowan; eight grandchildren, Dean and his wife, Sara, Katherine, Kyle, Wyatt, Christy and her husband, Tony, Cherish, Alex and Alyssa; also, one great-grandchild on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Esther; and a sister, Celeste.
