KATHLEEN SMITH

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Kathleen Smith, 79, of Rockledge, Fla., formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (April 20, 1999) at her son's home in Cocoa, Fla.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Brevard Memorial Funeral Home, Frontenac, Fla.

Visitation will be from 1 until 2 p.m. on Friday at the Brevard Memorial Funeral Home, (407) 636-3720.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, in memory of Kathleen Smith.

She was a member of the Rockledge Senior Center and St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was an artist and a duplicate bridge player.

She is survived by her sons, Ronald R. Smith of Titusville, Fla., Robert J. Smith of Kansas City, Mo., and James L. Smith of Cocoa, Fla.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Agnes Grosland, of Rochester, Minn.

HAZEL M. MENKEN

GREENE - Funeral services for Hazel M. Menken, 97, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 26, at the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor Gene Burry officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Hazel Maurie Lawyer was born Jan. 28, 1902, in Bruce Township, Benton County, a daughter of Alonzo David and Olive Minnie (Kenaston) Lawyer and died Thursday (April 22, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

She attended rural schools in Tama and Benton counties and graduated as Valedictorian of her class at the Dysart High School in 1919. She moved to Greene following graduation to live with her parents, who had moved two months earlier. She later attended Cornell College. As a young lady she worked for the Buchholtz and Dralle Department Store.

On Dec. 31, 1925, she was united in marriage to Richard O. Menken at the United Methodist Church in Greene. They farmed in the Greene area, purchasing their own farm in 1942. Following their retirement in 1957, they moved into Greene, where she became employed by the Dralle family at the department store.

She was a lifelong faithful member of the United Methodist Church and a Charter member of the Greene Women's Club. All through her life she had a great love for music.

Living family members include her son, Bruce and his wife, Marie Menken, of Greene; two grandchildren, Mervin and Robin Menken, of Greene, and DeAnn and Arthur Beger, of Lyons, Ill.; five great-grandchildren Amanda, Hillary, and Emily Menken and Christopher and Olivia Beger; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ada Heckt; and two brothers, Courtney and Graham Lawyer.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Hazel M. Menken Memorial Fund in care of the family.

L. FLORENCE HERBENER

MASON CITY - L. Florence Herbener, 95, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday (April 21, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jack Van den Heuvel of Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church officiating. Interment will be in LuVerne Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Florence was born Sept. 12, 1903 in rural LuVerne, the daughter of John and Henrietta (Curran) Northrop. She attended LuVerne schools. She worked for the Telephone Co. in Fort Dodge and moved to Mason City in 1923 with the Telephone Co., where she became a long distance supervisor at the age of 20.

She was married to Gerald E. Herbener in 1927 at LuVerne. She attended Mercy Hospital's Nursing training and passed the state boards in Des Moines as an LPN. They lived in Klemme from 1971-1979, then returned to Mason City.

She was a Red Cross Volunteer for many years.

She is survived by one son, Gerald "Jerry" E. Herbener, of Mason City; grandchildren, Kathleen Esser of Mason City, Kimberly West of Pasadena, Calif., Gerald R. Herbener of San Bernardino, Calif., Karen L. Herbener of Long Beach, Calif., and Kelly L. Hanson of Arizona; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters.

ROSE E. TRAVITS

CLEAR LAKE - Rose E. Travits, 93, of 5062 S. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Friday (April 23, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

JUNE ELIZABETH GALLAGHER-FLORES

MASON CITY - June Elizabeth Gallagher-Flores, 82, of 222 S. Pierce Ave., died Thursday (April 22, 1999) at the Sunrise Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

NORMAN CONRAD BLAKESTAD

ST. ANSGAR - Norman Conrad Blakestad, 90, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (April 23, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

GARNET D. MCCORMICK

MASON CITY - Garnet D. McCormick, 88, died Friday (April 23, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 26, at the Presbyterian Church in Red Oak, with the Rev. Tom Gard officiating.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak.

Garnet was the daughter of James A. and Blanche Baker Dunn. She was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Washington Township, Montgomery County. She attended rural school until she was 10, when the family moved to Villisca. She attended Villisca Public Schools, graduating in 1928. After one year at Red Oak Junior College, Garnet taught seven years in rural schools of Montgomery, Page, and Pottawatamie counties.

In 1936, she married Paul G. Smith of Stanton. They farmed in Washington Township. They were parents of three children, Carol Jean, Carmen D. and Thomas Paul. They retired and moved to Red Oak in 1972. Paul passed away in October of 1979.

In March of 1983, she married Lysle McCormick. Lysle passed away in July of 1997.

Garnet was a long-time and active member of the Presbyterian Church and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She had resided at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City since October of 1997.

She is survived by three children and their families, Mike and Carol Jean Iverson, of Mason City, Warren and Carmen Johnson, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Tom and Linda Smith, of Ankeny; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Richard and Charles McCormick and Susan Williams and their families. Verlyn Okerlund, Edna Smith and Jeanette Dunn, brother and sisters-in-law, also survive her.

Preceding her in death, besides her husbands, were her parents; and three brothers, John, James and Thomas Dunn.

ERVIN C. BLY

OSAGE - Ervin C. Bly, 64, of Osage, died Thursday (April 29, 1999) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell, with military rites by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation is from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home in Osage, (515) 732-3706, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Ervin was born March 6, 1935, in Austin, Minn., the son of Ellis O. and Hilda (Skogeboe) Bly. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1954. After graduation he entered the United States Army and served for three years, which included a tour of duty in Korea. He married Norma Lovejoy and they were parents to five children. Ervin married Bonnie Tibbits on Oct. 8, 1976, in South Dakota, and they were parents to five children. Ervin was employed by area farmers for many years, worked for Kensett Homes as a truck driver, at Featherlite in Nashua, and as a custodian at Lincoln Elementary School in Osage. He was a member of the American Legion, Pony Express of America and North Iowa Ropers.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Osage; five sons and five daughters, Vickie Norby and husband, Bill, of Rudd, Rickie Bly and wife, Sandy, of Virginia Beach, Va., Joseph Bly of Osage, Michelle Warner and husband, Keith, of Rockford, Cheryl Brandau and husband, Curtis, of Osage, Wanda Dahle and husband, Joseph, of Lake Mills, Edward Jackson of Kehei Maui, Hawaii, David Jackson of Newport, Minn., Kelly Bly of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kristopher Bly of Osage; a sister, Anola Beyer and husband, Dean, of Mitchell; two brothers, Curtis Bly and wife, Jane, of St. Paul, Minn., and Virgil Bly and wife, Carolyn, of Kensett; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Geraldine Prantner; and a brother, Earl Bly.

PEYTON LEIGH READ

CLEAR LAKE - Peyton Leigh Read, 30, died Thursday (April 29, 1999) in Des Moines.

A memorial service is being planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete.

DONALD M. MCGUIRE

ALGONA - Donald M. McGuire, 72, died Friday (April 30, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home. A parish rosary will be held at 3 p.m., a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., and a parish rosary at 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
