Martha Carol Haendler, 76, of Fort Madison, died on Saturday, October 7, 2006, at Fort Madison Care Center in Fort Madison.

Born on November 8, 1929, in Smithshire, IL, she was the daughter of Edward J. Clark and Winnie Marie Johnson. She married Leland D. Yaley on June 21, 1942 in Burlington, he died on March 9, 1991, and she then married Norman Haendler on September 20, 1991 in St. Louis, MO.

Mrs. Haendler worked as a cashier at Hy-Vee for eight years and she was also Office Manager at Merchants from 1968-1989, when she retired. She was of the Methodist Faith. Her passions were quilting and sewing, cooking and baking, gardening and her family.

Survivors include her husband Norman; three daughters Carol Heglin of Lakewood, Colorado, Linda Sattler of Burlington, and Debra Starr of Hamilton, Illinois; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters Eileen Gugeler of Burlington, and Dorothy Schmeiser of Kingston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Leland, and a brother Leo Clark.

Janice A. Hagerla
February 13, 1936 - July 16, 2006

Janice A. Hagerla, 70, of West Burlington passed away on July 16, 2006 at 7:05 a.m. at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. She had complications from Pulmonary Fibrosis and Sclera Derma.

She was born February 13, 1936 in West Point to Francis (Dutch) and Lola (Stewart) Fullenkamp. Janice married Ronald W. Deen November 17, 1953. Ronald passed away June 9, 1973. She then married Mark R. Hagerla May 29, 1976.

Janice is survived by her husband Mark R. Hagerla, children Gary (Nancy) Deen of West Burlington, Vickie (Jim) Flake of Wapello, Janette (Joe) Mertz of Phoenix, AZ, Ron (Debbie) Deen of West Burlington, Duane Deen of West Burlington, Steven Hagerla of Phoenix, John Hagerla of Kerrville, Texas, Joni (Les) Boling of West Burlington, Allan (Robin) Deen of West Burlington; 20 grandchildren; one great grandchild; sisters, Joan (Art) Wunnenberg of Mediapolis and Geraldine “Jeri” Webb of West Burlington; sister-in-law, Carolyn Fullenkamp of Burlington; and brother, Michael Fullenkamp of Burlington.

Janice worked at Sylvania in Burlington and General Electric. She and her husband (Mark) owned and operated Hagerla’s Grocery Stores, catering and holiday fruit baskets. Janice was a member of Iowa State Legislative Ladies League, Elizabeth Circle of Kings Daughters and an active participant of the Iowa Pulmonary Support Group. She was also a counsel member of St. Paul United Church of Christ of West Burlington, always ready to volunteer to cook, paint, and decorate or anything else that needed done.

Since retirement, Janice loved having coffee every morning with her coffee group and looked forward to her swimming exercises. She enjoyed bird watching on the farm, especially the Red Bird that came to her window. Most of all she loved and enjoyed her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, former husband, grandson Jade Klein, and brother Jim Fullenkamp.

Memorials have been established for St. Paul United Church of Christ Of West Burlington and Iowa Pulmonary Support Group.

Clarence "Lefty" Lloyd Hall
November 17, 1911 - February 16, 2006

Clarence “Lefty” Lloyd Hall, 94 of Burlington, died Thursday, February 16, 2006 at Rosebush Garden Assisted Living in Burlington, Iowa.

Born November 17, 1911 near Holyoke, Colorado in a sod home, he was the son of George Oliver and Ethel Brown Hall. On September 14, 1939 he married Melba L. Fynquist in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She died on February 25, 2004.

Mr. Hall worked at J. I. Case Company for thirty-four years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Des Moines County Extension Service Board and he also played baseball for the Burlington Semi Pro League on the J. & R., Moose Lodge, and J. I. Case teams. Mr. Hall also enjoyed his family, sports, games, golfing and working on his farm.

Survivors include one son, Royce D. (Linda) Hall of Bettendorf and one daughter, Barbara K. (Russell) Ralphs of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Lori (Philip) Hall Burke of Oxnard, California, Jerry M. (Laurie) Hall of Camarillo, California, Stephen P. (Tina) Vardaman of Vail, Colorado, Julie R. Vardaman of Ames, Iowa, Seth T. Ralphs of Monticello, Minnesota, Jesse W. Ralphs of Burlington and Jeremy S. Ralphs of Burlington; four great grandchildren, Tiffany and Alex James Hall and Lauren and Sophie Vardaman; one sister, June Blakeley of Mesa, Arizona; several nieces and nephews.

His wife, parents, and two brothers, Larry and Gaylen preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.

LeRoy Arthur Hallgren, 77, of Burlington, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007, at Ft. Madison Health Center.

Born June 24, 1929 in Burlington, he was the son of Roy Arnold and Jessie Elaine Nichols Hallgren. On June 10, 1963 he married Leola Grannaman in Burlington. She died October 17, 1994. On June 7, 1996 he married Lois Duel in Marietta, Georgia. She died January 8, 2003.

Mr. Hallgren was an Army Veteran of The Korean War. Mr. Hallgren worked for Witte Drug for 47 years, retiring as manager in 1994. Mr. Hallgren was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Burlington, where he was very active as a trustee and other jobs. He enjoyed gardening and his church activities.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Darlene Griffith of Austell, Georgia and Gwen Baker of Cumming, Georgia; one stepson, Brian Devereaux of Cumming, Georgia; two sisters, Mildred Rappenecker of Muscatine, Iowa and Katherine Olson of Phoenix, Arizona; sister-in-law, Michelle Chapman of Austell, Georgia; four nieces, Judy Hasenkamp of Warrenton, Missouri, Donna Badtram of West Burlington, Connie Nicholson of Eustis, Florida, and Cindy Olson of Phoenix, Arizona; and two nephews, Michael Rappenecker and David Rappenecker both of Burlington.

His two wives; parents; and one sister, Dorothy Laue, preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 11th, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hallgren will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 12th, in Heritage Baptist Church, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Brad Cranston will officiate.

Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa.

A memorial for Heritage Baptist Church has been established.

Helen Joan Hamann
April 15, 1934 - July 25, 2006

Helen Joan Hamann, 72, of Burlington, formerly of Mediapolis died at 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Burlington Care Center.

Born April 15, 1934 in Cameron, Missouri, she was the daughter of Walter and Leona Hodge Kenney. On July 30, 1954, she married Edward Hamann in Burlington. He died May 15, 1987.

Mrs. Hamann was a custodian for Mediapolis School District for 19 years, retiring in 1991. She was a graduate of Norte Dame High School in Burlington. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Dodgeville. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, flowers, gardening, birds and latch hook work.

Survivors include her children, Lisa Cloke of Middletown and Sharon Calvin of Morning Sun, Scott Hamann of Fredericksburg, Iowa, Ron Hamann of Mt. Pleasant, Gayle Bagwell of Mediapolis, and Eric Bagwell of Washington; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and three sisters, Theresa Rosson of Burlington, Mary Luth of Wilton, and Margie Harper of Kidder, Missouri.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Mya Brianna Harrell
Stillborn - May 8, 2007

Mya Brianna Harrell was stillborn Tuesday, May 8, 2007. She was the daughter of Jonathan Fitzgerald Harrell and Bridgette Brook Brandenburg of Burlington, Iowa.

Survivors include her parents; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Robbie Brandenburg of Burlington; paternal grandparents of Arkansas; and several aunts and uncles including Ronnie Brandenburg of Burlington and Brandi Hansel of North Liberty, Iowa.

Minerva "Minnie" Harris
September 3, 1965 - July 7, 2006

According to her wishes, Mrs. Harris' body will be cremated following the service

Minerva “Minnie” Harris, 40 of Burlington, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at her residence.

Born September 3, 1965 in Juarez, Mexico, she was the daughter of Pedro and Yolanda Puente Rocha. On August 17, 1984 she married Keith A. Harris in Burlington.

Mrs. Harris was a 1983 graduate of Burlington High School and a graduate of Bill Hill’s College of Cosmetology in Fort Madison. She worked at North Hill Elementary School as a teacher’s associate and at SSang’s as a hairdresser.

Mrs. Harris was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church. She also was a member of Wasaba Birthday Club. She enjoyed working with the children at North Hill and helping others as a translator or with transportation. She loved antiques and gardening and enjoyed gambling. Mrs. Harris was a very loving and giving person, thoughtful of others and a great friend.

Survivors include her husband, Keith Harris of Burlington; two sons, Nicholas Harris of Burlington and Benjaman Harris at home; one daughter, Sarah Harris at home; her parents Pedro and Yolanda Rocha of Burlington; two sisters, Janie Orr and Catalina (John) Berry both of Burlington; one brother, David (Ivonne) Rocha of Kansas City, Kansas; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her grandparents and two aunts preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for Sarah’s education.
