IOWA FALLS - Elsie Rogers, 80, of Iowa Falls, died Tuesday (June 15, 1999) at Mill Pond in Ankeny.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Church of The Open Bible, Iowa Falls. Burial will be in the Alden Cemetery , Alden.

Visitation was held Friday at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls.

ARLYN L. TONDERUM

CLARION - Arlyn L. Tonderum, 46, of Clarion, died Thursday (June 17, 1999) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident southeast of Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 21, at the Church of Christ, Clarion, with Mark Young officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery , Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion.

DALE G. HELM

MASON CITY - Dale G. Helm, 79, of 222 S. Pierce Ave., died Friday (June 18, 1999) at the Sunrise Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 21, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home and will continue until time of services on Monday.

REV. RODNEY HOLMBERG

MASON CITY - The Rev. Rodney Holmberg, 71, of 20 S. Vermont Ave., died Thursday (June 17, 1999) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City.

There will be no visitation. The Rev. Holmberg's body was cremated according to his wishes.

MARIAN G. MCDONALD

MASON CITY - Marian G. McDonald, 85, of 630 Briarstone Dr., died Thursday (June 17, 1999) at her home.

According to her wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Medical School.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. David Beckman and Monsignor Joseph Slepicka concelebrating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery , Mason City, at a later date.

Marian's family will greet friends starting at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. The Athenian Study Club will conduct a Rosary at 6 p.m., followed by a Scriptural Wake service at 7 p.m.

Marian G. McDonald was born March 13, 1914, at Graettinger, the daughter of Ernest and Edith (Turncaure) George. She graduated from Graettinger High School as valedictorian and in 1929 placed first in the state in algebra in the State University of Iowa Academic meet. She attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College and at the age of 71, graduated from NIACC with a 4.0 grade-point average.

She was a bookkeeper for Peoples' Gas and Electric (later Interstate Power) until her marriage on May 18, 1942 to Francis E. "Bud" McDonald at Immaculate Conception Church in Graettinger. They made their home in Mason City except for 3 1/2 years during World War II when Mr. McDonald was stationed in Cincinnati with the Army Engineers. Mr. McDonald died in 1983.

She was a homemaker except for the period from 1969 to 1979 when she was employed as community relations assistant director and volunteer coordinator at Mercy Hospital.

She was an avid reader and worldwide traveler, having toured more than 30 countries and most of the United States. For over thirty years, she was an organist at Holy Family Catholic Church, accompanying the choir, also playing piano and organ for various area events.

She was very active in community affairs serving on numerous boards and committees and volunteering many hours in various organizations notably Mercy Auxiliary, Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, Kinney Pioneer Museum and Heritage Care Center, where she taught Little Red Schoolhouse.

She was a 60-year member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Ladies Guild and had served on the Parish Council, was a lay distributor of communion and active in the Church Women United.

Marian was a founder, board member and officer of Kinney Pioneer Museum for many years.

She was a member of the Athenian Study Club, the Mercy Auxiliary, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, the New England Women, the Daughters of the American Colonists, the North Central Iowa Genealogy Society and numerous other genealogical organizations.

She is survived by two sons, James E. McDonald and his wife, Line' of Albuquerque, N.M., and Joseph F. McDonald and his wife, Jane, of Petaluma, Calif.; five grandchildren, Beth and Amy and her husband, Bryan Sullens; and Evan, Emily and Alex McDonald; one great-granddaughter, Edie; stepgrandson, Barry Tracey; a special grandson, Chris Bowe; a sister, Alice McDowell, of Eugene, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Eleanor McDonald, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Col. R.E. George; two sisters, Helen Jackman and Margaret Johnson; an infant son and an infant daughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Kinney Pioneer Museum, Hospice of North Iowa or Holy Family Catholic Church Restoration Fund.

IRENE E. "POLLY" DRABEK

BRITT - Irene E. Drabek, 71, passed away Friday (June 18, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Britt.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to the service at the church Monday. A parish wake service will begin at 7 p.m. today and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Polly, the daughter of Albert A. and Josephine Monson Nelson, was born at their home south and west of Britt on May 16, 1928. Her father, Albert Nelson, died when she was two years of age and she was raised by her second father, Harvy Nelson. She received her education in the Erin Township county schools and graduated from Britt High School in 1944. She spent her entire life in Britt, except for nine months spent in Esherville.

She was baptized into the Catholic faith early in 1947 and was confirmed in 1948. She was united in marriage with Raymond L. Drabek on Sept. 10, 1947, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley, Minn. The couple made their home in Britt.

Polly was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt. Her interests centered around her family, her grandchildren and her many friends. She enjoyed playing Bingo.

She was the mother of seven children: Shari and her husband, Loren Frank, of Woden, Connie and Linda Drabek of Britt, Randy and his wife, Mary, of Britt, Larry and his wife, Jan, of Britt, Paul and his wife, Dee, of Britt, and Lori and her husband, Dave Lomholt, of Britt; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Vavrik of Britt and Edythe Huisinga and her husband, Paul, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Bill and his wife, Heddy Nelson, of Coconut Creek, Fla., and Jim and his wife, Joann Nelson, of Grand Junction, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Nelson, of Britt

Polly was preceded in death by her parents; the father who raised her; her husband, Raymond, who died April 4, 1986; an infant brother; and a brother, Harvey.

DALE G. HELM

MASON CITY - Dale G. Helm, 79, of 222 S. Pierce, died Friday (June 18, 1999) at Sunrise Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery , Plymouth.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and will continue until the time of the service Monday.

Memorials may be directed to the Dale G. Helm Memorial Fund.

Dale G. Helm was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Plymouth, the son of Clarence A. and Tilba (Rossum) Helm. Dale graduated from Plymouth High School in 1938.

He worked for the Manly State Creamery as a bookkeeper for 19 years and then worked as a custodian for the North Central School District at the Plymouth elementary school for 24 years, retiring in 1986.

Dale served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a staff sergeant from 1941-45.

Dale was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church. Dale married Ethel I. Trebil on July 30, 1943, at the Plymouth United Methodist parsonage.

Dale is survived by two sons, Ricki M. Helm and his wife, Judy, of Little Rock, Ark., and LeAlan D. Helm and his wife, Becky, Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Darla D. Rosenberg and her husband, Jim, Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Erica and Corey Helm, Abbe and Adam Helm and Tyler Rosenberg; a brother, Ellsworth Helm, Popejoy; a sister, Buena Gould, Mason City; three sisters-in-law, Laura Helm, Plymouth, Geraldine Trebil, Mason City, and Wilma Trebil, Manly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel, in 1995; and his brother, Laurel, in 1997.

ORVILLE K. MABEN

GARNER - Orville K. Maben, 89, passed away Thursday (June 17, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Daniel Bloesch officiating. Interment will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday. Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Orville K. Maben, the son of O.K. and Jennie B. (Lewis) Maben, was born Aug. 28, 1909, southeast of Forest City. After graduating from Garner High School in 1928, he worked at various jobs in the Garner area. In 1929 he joined his father in the insurance business, in which he was active until his retirement in 1975.

On May 17, 1933, he married Gladys Smith at Davenport.

He was active in the State Association of Mutual Insurance Association and was president of the organization in 1954. He was a long-time board member and treasurer of IMT Insurance Company. He was active in civic organizations, being past president of the Garner Lions Club, served on the Garner Public School board and was involved on the planning committee for the Garner Memorial Building.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Maben and his wife, Patricia, of Garner and their son, Scott Maben, and three grandchildren, Dakotah Maben, Jeremy Jeambey and Jenna Jeambey, and Duane Maben and his wife, Diane, of Katy, Texas, and their four children, Shane Maben, Shannon Maben, Justin Maben and Kaley Maben; and a great-grandson, Aaron Maben.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys A. Maben, Oct. 22, 1993; a granddaughter, Sarah Jo Maben Jeambey, April 14, 1996; his parents; and two brothers, Clifford Maben and Merle Maben.
