MARY M. EVERIST

Mrs. Roy (Mary M.) Everist, 96, 309 E. Francis, La Habra, Calif., formerly of Mason City, died April 2, 1999, in Whittier, Calif.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 6, in Anaheim United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Shannon Conklin Miller, the Rev. Dr. Robert Shepard and the Rev. Mary Hibbard officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery , San Diego.

A memorial fund was established in her memory at the Anaheim United Methodist Church.

Mary Mabel Faye Gifford, daughter of the Rev. Charles Tabor and Harriett Direxa (Rowen) Gifford, was born March 17, 1903, in Gifford. Her father, who operated Gifford General Store and pastored the Gifford Methodist Church, died in 1911. In 1913 Mary moved with her family to Marshalltown, where she attended the Marshalltown schools and graduated from Marshalltown Business College. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for several local merchants.

On July 15, 1925, Mary married Sidney LeRoy (Roy) Everist, and they moved to Eldora, where they operated the Everist Oil Company until 1927, when they moved to Marshalltown to operate Roy's father's service station. On July 4, 1928, they moved to Mason City, where they operated several different businesses until September of 1950, when they moved to Ocean Beach, Calif. In 1962 she completed her high school education. Roy died May 12, 1958. Mary moved to Anaheim in 1968 and in 1994 she moved to her daughter Billie's home in La Habra.

Mary was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City, and of Point Loma Methodist Church in San Diego from 1950 to 1968. She became a member of Anaheim United Methodist Church on Sept. 22, 1968. She was Women's District treasurer for many years. She was a member of Morning Squares. She made many items for the church bazaar. She was also a member of Anaheim Senior Citizens Center and Partners in Chime. She made many Christmas stockings for family members as well as friends. She operated a computer and sent e-mail to all her children and other family members.

Mary had several hospitalizations beginning November 1998 and had a stroke on Jan. 19, 1999. On January 21, she entered Berryman Health East Whittier, where she passed away April 2.

Happy to have shared Mary's life are her daughters, Lois Everist Harder, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Wilmyth (Billie) Crowder, La Habra; her three sons and their spouses, Kempton and Margaret Everist, LaGrange, Calif., the Rev. Carroll and Dixie Everist, Mulvane, Kan., and the Rev. Burton and Norma Everist, East Dubuque, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; an infant daughter, Harriet Winona Everist; three grandsons, Sidney LeRoy Everist, Guy Carroll Everist, and Emmett Kenneth Crowder Jr.; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer Joy Cooper and Don and Dee Harder's baby girl; three sisters, Rhoda Stewart, Vivian Hicks and Beattrice Shaffer; and two brothers, Charles Gifford and Jasper Luverne Gifford.

PLYMOUTH - Verna A. Chehock, 102, formerly of Plymouth, died Sunday (June 20, 1999) at Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, (515) 454-2242.

HAMPTON - Thyra H. Oleson, 86, died Saturday (June 19, 1999) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 today at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

SHEFFIELD - Christian W. Lindloff, 90, died Sunday (June 20, 1999) at the Sheffield Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Grarup Funeral Home, 203 Maple St., Sheffield.

CORA J. RICE

LAKE MILES - Cora J. Rice, 78, died Saturday (June 19, 1999) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with the Rev. Roger Dystra and the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery , Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.

Cora Julia Rice was born in Worth County near Lake Mills on Jan. 30, 1921, the daughter of Corbet and Sarah (Bye) Adams. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1940.

On Aug. 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Elwood Ingolf Rice in Albert Lea, Minn. Together they farmed in the Lake Mills area. Elwood passed away Sept. 4, 1998.

Cora loved flower gardening and was very active in Salem Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She also spent a lot of time as a volunteer, helping at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, doing whatever needed to be done.

She is survived by her children, Susan Rice of Clear Lake, Larry and his wife, Helen Rice, Gregory and his wife, Julie Rice, and Richard and his wife, Linda Rice, all of Clear Lake, and Coleen Rice of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Daniel and Jennifer Rice, Nicholas and Tyler Rice, and Phillip, Alex, Katelin, and Emily Rice; brothers and sisters, Eva Hareid of Albert Lea, Minn., James Adams of Lake Mills, Blanche and her husband, Howard Hareid, of Minneapolis, and Donald and his wife, LaVonne Adams, of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elwood; a sister, Carma Adams; a sister-in-law, Maevis Adams; a brother-in-law, Louis Hareid; and a granddaughter, Mary Rice.

A. EVERETT WICKS

KANAWHA - A. Everett Wicks, 86, passed away Thursday (June 17, 1999) North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kanawha Lutheran Church with Pastor Keith Sievers officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery , Kanawha.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, Kanawha, and one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

A. Everett Wicks was born Jan. 8, 1913, in Kanawha to Nettie Erickson and Cryder Wicks. Everett graduated from Kanawha High School in 1931.

He and Viola Erickson were united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1936; farmed in Story County; and in 1951 moved to a farm near Kanawha where they resided for many years. In 1974 they retired and moved to town.

Ev and Vi celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of 1986 and Viola passed away in October of that year. Everett had been a resident of the Kanawha Community Home since 1997.

Everett will be remembered for his dedication to his wife and family, his respect for farming and love of the land, his wise business judgment and his curiosity about current events. He enjoyed people, sharing his stories of the past with passion and a twinkle in his eye. He was a living history book, as his recollection of details of events brought the past to life. His sense of humor was woven artistically through each tale he told. Upon retirement from farming, he readily became active in sports, enjoying bowling, golf, and his all-time favorite, billiards. In later years he added bingo to his list of activities.

In addition he made time each day for his "coffee buddies," also known as "the boys." Solving the world's problems while continually trying to control the weather to ensure a bountiful crop became intertwined with happy and jovial banter among genuine, good friends.

Survivors include Everett's six children and their families, Sheryl and Burrell Buren, Britt, Jan Wicks, Mason City, Delilah Stewart, Lakewood, Calif., Valerie and Ronald Trca, Spokane, Wash., Lana and Don Gray, Laverne, Calif., and Kevin and Trudy Wicks, Reno, Nev.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carole Basler, Thousand Oaks, Calif., LaVonne Nosbusch, Los Angeles, Calif., and Maxine and Paul Maland, Charles City; and one brother, Ray and Imogene Wicks, Belmond. Everett will be sadly missed by his many friends and his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola; a grandchild; and a brother.

MARTHA ANN JAX

STACYVILLE - Martha Ann Jax, 90, died Sunday (June 20, 1999) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville. Burial will be in Johnsburg Cemetery , Johnsburg, Minn.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Visitation Church Hall with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

STELLA MAE OLSON

DES MOINES - Stella Mae Olson, 93, of 4210 Hickman Road, died Sunday (June 20, 1999) at Calvin Community, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Des Moines.

Funeral services will also be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center. Burial will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 6:45 to 9 p.m. today at the Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Rd., Des Moines, with a 6:45 p.m. Eastern Star service.

Stella was born in Buffalo Center and had lived in Des Moines since 1947.

She taught school in Scarville, Stanhope, Hubbard and Belmond prior to teaching in Des Moines. She had taught in the Des Moines Public Schools for 22 years. She retired in 1967 after having taught school for a total of 42 years.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Des Moines and the Rachael Circle. She was a member of the Des Moines Women's Club, the National Retired Teachers Association, the Acanthus Order of Eastern Star, the Scandinavian Club, the Sons of Norway, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Alpha Mu (Music and fine arts). She was a volunteer for the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines for 28 years.

She is survived by four nieces, Rosalie Ekdale, of Menlo Park, Calif.; Marilyn Burnson, of New Orleans; Stella Rosalie Rainey, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Elizabeth Dronsnik, of Orlando, Fla.; and two nephews, Leo Paul Miller Jr., of San Mateo, Calif. and Arthur Olson Jr., of Tuscaloosa, Ala.

VERNA AGNES CHEHOCK

MASON CITY - Verna Agnes Chehock, 102, died Sunday (June 20, 1999) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Memorial services and celebration of her life will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, at Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Bohemian Cemetery in Plymouth.

There will be no visitation. According to her wishes, her body was cremated.

Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Verna Agnes Chehock was born on Jan. 30, 1897, in Plymouth, the daughter of John E. And Anna (Reindl) Chehock. She received her education in the Plymouth school system, graduating from Plymouth High School in 1914.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Mason City and graduated from Mason City Business School. After completing her education, she worked as a bookkeeper for many years in the Cerro Gordo County Treasurer's Office in Mason City.

She also spent several years in California where she worked for various companies before moving back to Mason City working as a bookkeeper for several years for Lundberg's Dress Shop.

She enjoyed classical music and was a very talented pianist.

Verna had been a resident of the Good Shepherd Health Care Center for 34 years.

Left to cherish her memory is a brother, Glenn Chehock of Duluth, Minn.; a sister, Annabelle Gallagher of Lake Mills; two nieces, Carole Ahlgren and her husband, Floyd, of Duluth, and Susan Gallagher of Iowa City; three nephews, Gerry Chehock and his wife, Marsha, of Mesa, Ariz., Craig Gallagher and his wife, Marci, of Iowa Falls, and Jay Gallagher and his wife, Christine, of Cedar Rapids; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Arnold and Joseph Chehock.
