ELROY SANFORD BREEN

NORTHWOOD - Elroy Sanford Breen, 95, of rural Northwood, died Thursday (June 24, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at the Lutheran Retirement Home Chapel, 700 10th St. N., Northwood, with the Rev. Al Stoa, Chaplin of the Lutheran Retirement Home and the Rev. Steve Smith of Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery , rural Northwood.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of services on Saturday at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. So., Northwood, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Elroy Sanford Breen was born on May 9, 1904, in Silver Lake Township, rural Northwood, the son of Elling and Minnie (Rue) Breen. He was baptized by the Rev. N.E. Boe and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation by the Rev. O.C. Brenna at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood.

He attended and received his education in the Silver Lake No. 6 rural school system and also attended and graduated from the Luther Academy in Albert Lea, Minn. Elroy farmed in the Silver Lake Township area all his life until his retirement.

He was a member of the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, and held various offices within the church. He was also on the board of directors at Northwood State Bank for 25 years.

He is survived by distant relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Clarence Breen, who died on Dec. 18, 1997.

EVELYN S. CHENEY

OSAGE - Evelyn S. Cheney, 87, of Waterloo, formerly of Osage, died on Wednesday (June 23, 1999) at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab in Waterloo.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Stillwater Cemetery , rural Orchard.

There will be no visitation. Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES H. RADECHEL

CLARION - Charles H. Radechel, 68, of Clarion, died Wednesday (June 23, 1999) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating.

After the services there will be a time of fellowship until 4 p.m. Monday at the church.

RALPH MCDONALD

GREENE - Ralph McDonald, 85, of 2795 290th St., died Wednesday (June 23, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt, pastor of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Osage officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City, with military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.

PEARL WALTERS

MASON CITY - Pearl Walters, 91, of 718 N. Van Buren Ave., died Wednesday (June 23, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, at the First Christian Church, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

ELIZABETH HAYUNGS

WODEN - Elizabeth Hayungs, 96, of Woden, died Thursday (June 24, 1999) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden, with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Interment will be in Bingham Township Cemetery , south of Woden.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Woden, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

SAMUEL L. CROOKS

GREENE - Funeral services for Samuel L. Crooks, 89, formerly of 702 Riverview Drive, will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Greene. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.

Samuel Leo Crooks was born July 3, 1909, in rural Ionia, Chickasaw County, a son of Samuel George and Almina Lucinda (Huffman) Crooks, and died Wednesday (June 23, 1999) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

At the age of nine, he became the foster son of Edward and Estella Eikenberry of Greene. He attended rural Dayton Township schools and attended the Greene High School. As a young man, he worked for various farmers in the Greene area and in Orange Township near Waterloo.

On Jan. 24, 1930, he was united in marriage to Alice Menken at the Methodist Parsonage in Greene. They began farming south of Greene until 1962, when they moved into town and he became employed as custodian and bus driver for the Greene Community School District. He retired in 1974.

He was united in marriage to Blanche Beguelin Mather on June 9, 1974, at the Methodist Church in Greene. They made their home overlooking the Shell Rock River until entering the Liebe Care Center in 1994.

Sam's greatest love was farming. He enjoyed fishing, mowing the lawn, gardening, making latch-hook rugs, cracking walnuts, playing pool and spending time with his grandchildren. He was always willing to help out on community projects including the park benches, the historical society and the church roof project. He was a member of the Farm Bureau.

He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Greene, where he served as trustee, member of the parsonage committee, and a member of the Outlook Class.

Living family members include his wife of 25 years, Blanche of the Liebe Care Center; three daughters and their spouses, Ruth and Allan Jacobson, Joan and Harold Meyer, all of Greene, and Barbara and Robert Lee, of Rochester; one son, Ron and his wife, Beverly Crooks, of LaPort City; one stepdaughter, Marjorie and her husband, Neal O'Brien, of Greene; two stepsons and their spouses, Paul and Loan Mather, of Fort Washington, Md., and Duane and Rose Lee Mather, of Janesville; nine grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 19 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice, on Feb. 5, 1971; five sisters, Opal Snyder, Almina Houts, Florence Bos, Gertrude (Emily) Smith and Carrie in infancy; four brothers, Harley, James, Rueben, and Bert Crooks.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Samuel Crooks Memorial Fund in care of the family.

HENRIETTA IRENE MEEK

GREENE - Henrietta Irene Meek, 70, of 510 N. High, died Thursday (June 24, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, with a 7 p.m. scripture service, followed by a rosary service.

GARNER - Anne Brear, 93, of Garner, died Thursday (June 24, 1999) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.
