LYMAN G. NELSON

MASON CITY - Lyman G. Nelson, 84, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Saturday (June 26, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

There will be no services per Lyman's wishes. His body was donated to the College of Medicine, University of Iowa, Iowa City.

There will be no visitation. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

Lyman G. Nelson was born July 8, 1914, at Forest City, to Nels and Elfie T. (Taylor) Nelson. He attended Forest City schools, then worked in construction. On Oct. 29, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II. He served in Normandy, France, and Czechoslovakia, earning five battle stars as a telephone switchboard and radio operator with the artillery. When the war ended, he served in the Army of occupation in Germany until his discharge on Dec. 12, 1945.

He then came to Mason City, where he worked as a plasterer for various contractors. For 12 years he worked for W.S. Easley and Sons. Later he worked for the Mason City school system as a repairman and custodian at John Adams Junior High. He retired July 1, 1979, after 18 years with the school system.

Lyman had married Nora Lein on June 15, 1946. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Lyman is survived by a step-son, Royce Nelson, of Iowa City; a brother, Jack Nelson, of Forest City; nephews, Keith Nelson of Columbia, Mo., David Nelson of St. Cloud, Minn., and Ervin Feeny of Bettendorf; a niece, Aileen Weld of Holyoke, Mass; and a special friend, Don Freese and his wife, Lila, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

HENRIETTA I. MEEK

GREENE - A funeral mass for Henrietta I. Meek, 70, of 510 High Street, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Henrietta Irene Ackley was born June 12, 1929, in rural Marble Rock, Floyd County, a daughter of Harrison and Gertrude (Castle) Ackley, and died Thursday (June 24, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene, of cancer.

She received her education in the Marble Rock public schools, graduating in 1946. As a young lady she worked at the Crabtree Restaurant in Greene.

On Oct. 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wayne Meek at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They made their home in Greene until 1960, when they moved to the home farm northeast of Greene. Henrietta helped farm and milk cows and raise her four children. In 1976 they returned to town when Wayne started working at the Farmers Coop and continued to farm.

In 1981, Henrietta started to work as a cook at the Greene High School until her retirement in 1991. Henrietta and Wayne celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1997.

Henrietta's most prized possession were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Throughout the years Henrietta and Wayne followed their children and grandchildren's school and athletic activities.

Her interests included baking, bird watching, reading and crossword puzzles. She will be remembered for her potato salad, angel food cakes, and popcorn balls.

Living family members include her husband, Wayne, of Greene; three sons, Jerry and his friend, Joni, of Greene, Jim and his wife, Pat, of Dows, and Jeff and his wife, Lisa, of Coon Rapids; one daughter, Jayne and her husband, Kenneth Knapp, of Greene; eight grandchildren, Rob, Lisa, John, Rick, Jamie, Brandie, and Dustie Meek and Heather Knapp; four great-grandchildren, Hayley, Dillon, Brianna and Nathan Meek; two sisters and their spouses, Margaret and Lester Hurd, of Nashua, and Beverly and Dick Woods, of Portland, Ore.; three brothers and their spouses, Roger and Marie Ackley, of Chillicothe, Ill., Kenneth and Mickey Ackley, of Dubuque, and Arthur and Mona Ackley, of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her son, Duane, in 1948; her parents; and three sisters, Thelma Hayungs, Irma Snavley, and Wilma Marion.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Henrietta I. Meek Memorial Fund in care of the family or to the Hospice of North Iowa.

MARIE DIRKSEN

BELMOND - Marie Dirksen, 85, died Thursday (June 24, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church, Alexander, with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday.

Marie (Kuhlers) Dirksen, the daughter of Albert and Grace (Vierkant) Kuhlers, was born on April 9, 1914, near Meservey. She was baptized as an infant in the Meservey Reformed Church in Meservey. Marie attended and graduated from the Heidelburg Catechism. She made her confession of faith and was a member of the Meservey Reformed Church.

On Dec. 15, 1938, Marie was united in marriage to Louis Dirksen. The couple lived on their farm north of Alexander and had two children, Karen Bobst and Robert Dirksen.

After marriage, Marie became an active and faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander. She was a member of the Dorcas Society, the Ladies Aid, and later, the Reformed Church Women's Association (R.C.W.).

Marie and Louis moved into Belmond in November 1979. Marie enjoyed her home and her flowers. She also very much enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Louis Dirksen, of Belmond; daughter, Karen Bobst and her husband, LeRoy, of New Hampton; two grandsons, Jeffery Bobst and his wife, Twila, of Waverly, and Justin Bobst and his wife, Lonna, of Alexander; six great-grandchildren, Jessica, Dana, Erin and Kari Bobst of Waverly, and Jeremie and Lea Bobst of Alexander; two sisters, Alice Dirks and Alvina Kuhlers, both of Belmond; and one brother, Carl Kuhlers and his wife, Shirley, of Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Robert in 1987; and siblings, Herman Kuhlers, Reka Pals, Albert Kuhlers, George Kuhlers and Grace Mennenga.

EDWARD P. MERFELD

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Edward P. Merfeld, 85, of 734 Bradford St., Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary service.

Edward Peter Merfeld was born Oct. 17, 1913, on the Merfeld family farm east of Marble Rock, a son of John J. and Katherine (Kramer) Merfeld, and died Saturday (June 26, 1999) at the Sunrise Care Center in Mason City of Alzheimer's Disease.

He received his education at the Marble Rock Public School and graduated from St. Mary's School at Roseville. As a young man he helped at home with the farming until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 13, 1942. He received his basic training at Camp Cook, Ga., and later served with Co. A., 707 Tank Battalion, in England, northern France, and at the Siegfried Line in Germany.

He was captured by the German Army on Nov. 8, 1944, and was held prisoner at Stallags 12A and 3B until his escape in May, 1945. He attained the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 17, 1945. On Memorial Day, 1999, he was awarded the POW Medal and the Ex-POW bar at services held at Fredricksburg.

On Feb. 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Audrey R. Campbell of Rockwell at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. They made their home in Marble Rock, and to this union were born four children.

He farmed in partnership with his brother, Bernard, for 20 years. Ed specialized in raising livestock as part of the farming operation. He had an interest in horses and ponies all of his life, which started as a hobby and later turned into a business. He was a founding member of the Pony of the Americas, and began raising and showing POA's over many states from California to New York. He won many trophies and ribbons for his ponies. His greatest accomplishment was when he sold one of the first POA ponies internationally to a lady in Australia. Following his retirement in 1975, he raised miniature horses until shortly before his 80th birthday.

He served on the board of directors of the Marble Rock Co-op Elevator, was a member of the Iowa POA Board and was a member of the North East Iowa Ex-POW Chapter. He also was a member of the Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion Post of Marble Rock and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville.

Living family members include his wife of 53 years, Audrey, of Marble Rock; two daughters, Judy and her husband, Steve Smith, of Bridgewater, N.J., and Carolyn Hickey and her fiance, Dean Athey, of Columbus, Neb.; two sons and their spouses, E. Alan and Sunny Merfeld of Harrisburg, Penn., and Douglas and Tracy Merfeld of Grand Forks, N.D.; five grandchildren, Travis Hickey, Tracey and her husband, Mark Leenheer, Tiffany and her fiance, Tony Kramer, Brian and his wife, Coleen Merfeld, and Scott Merfeld; two stepgrandchildren, Rob Johnson and Sheri and her husband, Jim O'Connell; one great-grandson; three stepgrandchildren; one sister, Agatha Krambeer of Marble Rock; and a sister-in-law, Gila Merfeld of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Sister Mary Marcellina, OSB, Christine Staudt, Barbara Staudt and Anna Kobbermann; and five brothers, Louis, Tony, Merrick, Leander and Bernard Merfeld.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Edward Merfeld Memorial Fund in care of the family.

DOUGLAS FABER

FOREST CITY - Douglas Faber, 38, died Saturday (June 26, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Petersen-Lund Funeral Home.

MILFERD J. HILBERT

BRITT - Milferd J. Hilbert, 80, died Saturday (June 26, 1999) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

ANTHONY J. 'TONY' KOLLASCH

BANCROFT - Anthony J. "Tony" Kollasch, 72, died Saturday (June 26, 1999) at the Fairmont Community Hospital, Fairmont, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ledyard, with the Rev. John Thomas and the Rev. Alan Reicks officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery , Ledyard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry Roberts Murphy Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church in Ledyard on Tuesday. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

WILBUR D. PALS

BELMOND - Wilbur D. Pals, 69, died Monday (June 28, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.
