Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.

SHIRLEY SHANNON

MASON CITY - Shirley Shannon, 70, of 1228 N. Adams Ave., died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

VIOLA MAE TOWLE

HAMPTON - Viola Mae Towle, 101, died Wednesday (June 30, 1999) at Bear Creek Care Center, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

DR. PERRY UHL

VERMILLION, S.D. - Dr. Perry Uhl, 61, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hansen Funeral Home, Vermillion, S.D.

MASON CITY - Ruth B. Eppens, 73, of 1627 S. Wilson Ave., died Friday (July 2, 1999) at her home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

GLADYS E. SEEFELD

MASON CITY - Gladys E. Seefeld, 84, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and until time of services on Tuesday.

HENRY DEPPING

LATIMER - Henry Depping, 84, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Latimer. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery , Alexander.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.

LEON LEROY BRUNSWOLD

LAKE MILLS - Leon Leroy Brunswold, 96, of Lake Mills, formerly of Walker, Minn., died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Hancock, Minn.

There will be no visitation. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

NORA GARNER

BURT - Nora Garner, 101, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Burt Community Center, Burt. Burial will be in the Burt Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.

ROCKFORD - Francis Schweizer, 78, of Rockford, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rudd United Methodist Church, Rudd, with the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery , Rudd.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

DUANE F. SICKLES

READLYN - Duane F. Sickles, 60, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Readlyn, with the Rev. Alfred Kruse officiating. Burial will be in the St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

RICHARD W. SULLIVAN

PLATTSBURG, Mo. - Richard W. Sullivan, 65, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo., after a lengthy illness.

The funeral ceremony will be held Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Plattsburg, Mo. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery , Plattsburg. The Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Sullivan was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Mexico, Mo., to John and Ada Sullivan. He graduated from St. Brendan High School, Mexico, in 1952, and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

During the Korean conflict, he served as a Korean translator in Japan and Korea. He was a graduate of the National Security Agency Language School, Washington, D.C.

After his military service, Sullivan studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and received a bachelor's degree in 1960. He met his wife, Carolyn Kincaid, at the university. They were married on Dec. 26, 1959.

Sullivan began his journalism career as a sportswriter for the Mason City Globe-Gazette in 1960. He was later appointed assistant sports editor. In 1967, Sullivan moved to the news staff of the Globe-Gazette, covering city and county government, as well as other areas. He was appointed city editor in 1974. Sullivan received several journalism awards during his career, including the Associated Press Managing Editor's Sweepstakes Award for news writing in 1970 and 1976. One award was for a story he wrote after posing as a volunteer patient in a psychiatric ward of a Mason City hospital. He also wrote a popular column called "I Don't Know, Too," for many years.

Sullivan retired from the Globe-Gazette in 1986, and he and his wife moved to her hometown of Plattsburg. In Plattsburg, Sullivan was active in the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, serving as financial secretary for several years, and with the Plattsburg American Legion post. He also was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. He was a member of the St. Ann's Church, Plattsburg.

Sullivan is survived by his wife; three sons, Steven of Des Moines, Rick of Chicago, and Michael of Los Angeles; one daughter, Sally of Mason City; two grandchildren, Jordon and Brittany, also of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Callie Sullivan of Portland, Ore.; an aunt, Margarite Sullivan of Mexico, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Donald; a sister, Betty Pearson; and his parents-in-law, Alvis and Carrie Kincaid, Plattsburg.

Memorials may be sent to the Richard Sullivan Memorial Fund, 702 Lark St., Plattsburg, Mo., 64477.

RUTH B. EPPENS

MASON CITY - Ruth B. Eppens, 73, of 1627 S. Wilson Ave., died Friday (July 2, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery , Mason City.

Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church

Ruth B. Eppens was born Feb. 17, 1926, to John Bertram and Eva Marie (Overturf) Eppens. She attended Mason City schools.

On Sept. 27, 1947, Ruth married Charles Eppens in Mason City. Ruth worked for S.S. Kresge Variety Store and later for the NIACC food service.

Ruth was a member of First Baptist church. Ruth enjoyed her card club, playing marbles and her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, John Eppens and his wife, Carolyn, Mason City, and Dale Eppens and his wife, Barb, Clear Lake; a sister, Esther Wheeler and her husband, Eugene, Mason City; five grandchildren, Ronni Rettig and her husband, Shawn, Craig Eppens and his wife, Jennifer, and Brian, Brenda and Katie Eppens; and four great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 1992; five brothers, Chuck, Don, Kenny, Clarence and Bud; and one sister, Geraldine.
