MARGARET JUNE BRANDON RIETZ
ROWAN - Margaret June Brandon Rietz, 91, of Rowan, passed away Monday (July 5, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services for Margaret Rietz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Rowan, with the Rev. JoAn Skryme officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery , near Rowan.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Margaret, the daughter of Peryl "Pete" Otis and Golda Fannie Innis Brandon, was born June 17, 1908, at Stratford. At an early age, her family moved to Clarion, where she attended school. Margaret graduated from Clarion High School in 1925, where she received her normal training.
She worked for a dentist in Clarion after high school. Margaret then attended Monmouth College, in Monmouth, Ill., for one year on a scholarship. She later took courses at Iowa State Teachers College and Drake University. Margaret began teaching in 1927 at the country schools in the Clarion area. She began teaching at Rowan in 1932.
Margaret was united in marriage to Karl H. Rietz on June 2, 1935 at her aunt's home in Clarion. The couple made their home in Rowan. During World War II, she began teaching again full-time. Margaret first taught at the Rowan School until 1970, then taught her last few years in Belmond.
After retiring in 1972, Margaret and Karl enjoyed traveling within the United States and overseas. However, their favorite drive was from Rowan to Lake Cornelia to Clarion to home.
While at home, Margaret enjoyed reading,embroidery and crossword puzzles. She was also an avid quilter. Margaret moved to the Belmond Health Care Center in 1997.
Margaret was a charter member of the Rowan Review Club. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Rowan, where she held numerous offices and positions.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Karl; one son, Roger and his wife, Joan, of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Carmen Jorgenson and her husband, Ted, of Fremont, Calif.; four grandchildren, Thomas Rietz and his wife, Karen, of Iowa City, Sarah Rietz, of Iowa City, Chad Jorgenson and his wife, Angie, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Doug Jorgenson, of Fremont, Calif.; one great-grandchild, Thea; and many other loving relatives and former students.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

BELMOND - Gladys M. Thompson, 92, of Belmond, died Tuesday (July 6, 1999) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

GAIL NOVIS
ZURICH, Switzerland - Gail Novis - singer, pianist, composer.
Gail was born March 2, 1956 in Mondovie, Wis., and she died June 9, 1999 in Zurich, Switzerland.
Gail Novis was a popular pianist/singer who played clubs throughout the Diablo Valley/Santa Cruz area in the '70s, '80s and '90s. She had been on performance tour of Europe for the past eight years and lived in Zurich.
She grew up and attended school in Mason City, Iowa.
She is survived by her mother, Eva Novis, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; sister, Rochelle Novis, of Illinois; sister, Paula Statman, of Oakland, Calif.; and niece, Lauren Statman, of Oakland, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jacob.

I. LEONARD WALLS
CLEAR LAKE - I. Leonard Walls, of Rockford, Ill., died Sunday (July 4, 1999) at the Swedish American Hospital, in Rockford, Ill.
Leonard was born Jan. 2, 1915, in Clarion, the son of Isaac L. Sr. and Lola (Sanders) Walls.
Leonard lived many years in Clear Lake before moving to Rockford in 1967.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pauline (Blakley); and daughter, Barbara (Steve) Fleeman, both of Rockford; daughters, Marjorie (Dave) Toft and Mary (Don) Running, of Savage, Minn.; daughter, Patricia (Andy) Olson, of Sidney, Ohio; sister, Cecil (Emil) Broers, of Clear Lake; stepchildren, Lora Ann Quartuccio, of Las Vegas, Nev., Mara Beth McBride, of Rogers, Ark.; and Wilbur Nelson, of Benetia, Calif.; and many special grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by parents and brothers Howard, Russell, Ralph and Donnie.
A brief visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday with Special Friend in Christ, Mrs. Ila Mae Morgan, of Rockford, officiating.

MARTHA ANNETTA SIEMERS
EMMETSBURG - Martha Annetta Siemers, 80, of Emmetsburg, died Tuesday (July 6, 1999) at the Palo Alto County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg, with the Rev. Dennis Angland officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Emmetsburg.
Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, 704 Grand Ave., Emmetsburg.
Martha Annetta Siemers was born April 2, 1919, in Dell Rapids, S.D., to Ben and Grace (Poel) Bohlen. She attended country school in Grant County, S.D.
She was united in marriage to Hinderk "Henry" Siemers on Nov. 24, 1938, in Twin Brooks, S.D. He died on March 20, 1997.
She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and Church Circle.
Martha is survived by five children, Ruth Mohr, of Mankato, Minn., Gilbert Siemers, of Emmons, Minn., Marcella Kressin, of Clear Lake, Ben Siemers, of Centerville, and Tim Siemers, of Cylinder; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Buttke, of Corona, S.D., and Bernice Athey, of Milbank, S.D.; and one sister-in-law, Marie Bohlen, of Milbank, S.D.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Grace; and brother, Ado Bohlen.
IZOLA ALICE SMITH
OTTUMWA - Izola Alice Smith, 78, formerly of 2629 Marilyn Rd., died at 6:30 p.m. Monday (July 5, 1999) at the Ottumwa Manor.
Prayer services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon, with the Rev. David Albert officiating. Open visitation will begin following prayer services until 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kremer Funeral Home.
Further graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the LuVerne Cemetery
in LuVerne.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1920, near Thompson to Leroy and Alsena Walkner Smith. She married Milo I. Smith on April 7, 1944, in Blue Earth, Minn. He died on June 9, 1976.
She was a homemaker and traveled with her husband who was a construction worker. She moved to Ottumwa in 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Streeby, of Eldon; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sylvia Boelman, of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and twin sisters.
MICHAEL E. PREFTAKES
IOWA CITY - Michael E. Preftakes, 38, of 46 Camborn Circle, died Tuesday (July 6, 1999) at his home.
A memorial gathering of friends will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. Burial will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Mason City.
The family will greet friends after 12:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Visiting Nurse's Association.
Michael was born March 24, 1961, in Mason City, the son of Alex and Phyliss Wagner Preftakes. He was a 1979 graduate of Mason City High School and had attended NIACC for two years. He was a 1983 marketing graduate of the University of Iowa.
Michael was the chief operating officer for That's Rentertainment for the past 15 years. While under his tenure, That's Rentertainment was in the top 100 video chains in the country five times. He had been featured in the Video Store Magazine for his marketing skills. Michael was well known for his knowledge of the film industry.
Survivors include his parents, Alex and Phyliss; one sister, Jean Nordstrom and her husband, Norman, of Novi, Mich.; his niece, Nicole; three aunts and two uncles, Delores Wagner, Dolly Preftakes and her husband, James, and Henry Mataloni, all of Mason City; and Beverly Kroll, of Lee Center, Minn.; his former wife and friend, Deb Preftakes, of Mason City; and six cousins.
