JOANNE CATHERINE MARSH

GREENE - Funeral services for Joanne Catherine Marsh, 58, of 502 N. Bluff, Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev. Gene Burry and the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Joanne Catherine D'Antonio was born June 8, 1941, at St. Mary's Help Hospital in San Francisco, Calif., the daughter of John and Lillian (Hufrichter) D'Antonio, and died Tuesday (July 6, 1999) at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

She received her education at the Immaculate Conception Academy for Girls in San Francisco, from which she graduated in 1959, 40 years ago.

Joanne met Bruce M. Marsh in May of 1960, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. They were married on June 16, 1962, in Millbrae, Calif. To this union were born two sons and one daughter.

The couple's first home was in San Diego, where Joanne worked for Lloyds of London Insurance Company, after being transferred from her job in San Francisco. When Bruce was discharged in October of 1963, they moved back to Iowa, where Bruce was engaged in farming on the family farm. She saw her first snow in Laramie, Wyo., on their trip back to Iowa.

They moved to the Worth County area in 1971, and to Grafton in 1974, where they owned The Gobblers Roost and Marsh Insurance Agency. Joanne was a great cook, serving Italian dishes, and continued to work as a cook at the restaurant until her health limited her. While in Grafton, she and Bruce were active members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She belonged to Minerva's Club and Coffee Club.

The couple moved back to Greene in 1992 and made their home at 502 N. Bluff. They became active members of the United Methodist Church. They reaffirmed their faith in Christ as their Savior on Jan. 7, 1996. She took part in the United Methodist Women, Bible Fellowship, the Woman's Club of Greene and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved bingo and had a special friend in her Aunt Ruth.

Joanne underwent a heart transplant on Nov. 18, 1997. At the time of the transplant, she appreciated community support from the Greene and Grafton areas in the form of benefits and prayer vigils. She received special care from her husband and his family. Joanne and Bruce appreciated the prayers and support of the family, friends, her doctors, nurses and all who cared for her. She spent the past year and a half being cared for at home, in the hospital and in nursing homes, due to various complications.

During this time, she became an inspiration to many for her strong Christian faith and her positive attitude in adversity, often cheering up those around her. She participated in heart research, using various experimental drugs, and at the time of her passing, her kidneys were failing her.

Joanne's favorite saying was, "I love you!" and she has instilled that in her children and grandchildren. She loved her family. To them she was their strength and was always there for them. She was a great cook and a great lady. She loved angels and with her wings, she is now serving the Lord in Heaven.

Living family members include her husband, Bruce, who has been blessed being part of her life the past 37 years; two sons, Steve Marsh, of Grafton and Darren Marsh and his wife, Lori Marsh, of Grafton; one daughter, Kelli Hemann, and her husband, Mike, of Stacyville; four grandchildren, Aubrey Marsh, Cody and Abbie Marsh and Samantha Hemann; her sister, Georgene Fanella and her husband, Bob, of Boulder Creek, Calif., and their children, Eddy and Nichole, of Millbrae, Calif.; and one brother, Kenneth D'Antonio and his daughter, Deanna, of Millbrae, Calif.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Joanne Catherine Marsh Memorial Fund in care of the family.
