Frank Adam Hellenthal, 98, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 9:00 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2007, at Bickford Cottage.
Born December 29, 1908 in Burlington, he was the son of Frank William and Clara Louise Walker Hellenthal.
Mr. Hellenthal was an Army Veteran of World War II serving from 1941 to 1945 as a Corporal.
He and his partner, Art Nelson started the Dairy Queen in Burlington in 1947, built another one in 1948 and built their third one on Roosevelt Avenue in 1964. He retired in 1971.
Mr. Hellenthal was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1922.
Survivors include one brother, H. Michael “Mike” Hellenthal of Fort Madison, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents; two brothers, Roy Hellenthal and Orval Hellenthal; and one sister, Evalyn Engstrom preceded him in death.

David LeRoy Helmick Sr., 58, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:45 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2006, at his home.
Born April 13, 1948 in Burlington, he was the son of James Raymond and Lela Maude Kimbrough Helmick. On August 10, 1974 he married Kim Shepherd in Rock Island, Illinois.
After graduating high school Mr. Helmick attended the University of Iowa. He held various positions in sales and finance at Westland Ford, J.D. Byrider, and Deery Brothers in Burlington.
Mr. Helmick was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, Moose Lodge No. 579 and Burlington Knights of Columbus. He was a Burlington Steamboat Days volunteer for 25 years, P.T.S.O. president of Washington School, active in Boy Scouts and Order of the Arrow, past president of Carroll, Iowa Jaycees and member of the Optimist Club. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling, but mostly spending time with family.
Survivors include his wife, Kim Helmick of Burlington; one daughter, Heather Topping of Burlington; one son, David L. Helmick Jr. of Somerset, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Danny Topping, Davie Helmick, Megan Topping and Kade Helmick; five sisters, Mary Hammond of Wapello, Iowa, Lela Tull of Burlington, Helen Riley of West Burlington, Carol Warth of Burlington and Patricia Boney of Ector, Texas; four brothers, James Helmick of Burlington, John Helmick of Sherman, Texas, Tom Helmick of Burlington and Jack Helmick of Washington, Iowa.
His parents; two sisters, Maxine Schaefer and Karen Soule; and one brother, Dale Helmick, preceded him in death.

James “Jim” E. Helmick, 64, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 4:21 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester,
Minnesota.
Born July 28, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of James Raymond and Lela Maude Kimbrough Helmick.
On January 4, 1964, he married Karen J. Carpenter in Burlington.
Mr. Helmick was a 1960 graduate of Burlington High School. He was an Army Veteran serving from 1961 – 1964. He worked for 35 years at J.I. Case Co., retiring in 1999. He then served as the Administrator of Moose Lodge No. 579.
He was a former member of First United Church of Christ where he served on various committees. He attended First Christian Church – Disciples of Christ most recently.
As a member of Moose Lodge No. 579 in Burlington, he served in numerous positions. He was president and vice president of Iowa/Eastern Nebraska Moose Association, and was appointed Deputy Supreme Governor by Moose International in 1999 at the International Convention in Toronto, Canada. On May 27, 2000 he was presented the Pilgrim Degree, which is the highest degree in the Moose Association.
In addition, Mr. Helmick was a Shriner, member of Patriot Masonic Lodge No. 650 AF&AM, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150 and also served on the Burlington Baseball Association Board. He was involved in Boy Scouts, Little League and was serving as president of the board for Casebine Credit Union. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include, his wife of 43 years, Karen Helmick of Burlington; one daughter, Marsha (Lance) Johnson of Burlington; two sons, James (Cielit) Helmick of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Brian (Terri) Helmick of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Lexis, Anna, Angelica, Emeline, Hunter and Ava; three brothers, Tom (Sue) Helmick of Burlington, John (Marty) Helmick of Sherman, Texas, and Jack (Debbie) Helmick of Washington, Iowa; four sisters, Mary Hammond of Wapello, Iowa, Lela Tull of Burlington, Helen (Bob) Riley of West Burlington and Patricia (Rodney) Boney of Ector, Texas; one sister-in-law, Kim Helmick of Burlington; two brothers-in-law, Paul Shaefer of Burlington and Bradley Soule of Muscatine, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Maxine Sheafer, Karen Sue Soule, and Carol Warth; and two brothers, Dale Helmick and David Helmick.

Charles “Chuck” L. Hemerling, 59, of Burlington, Iowa died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at his residence.
Born June 18, 1947 in Burlington, he was the son of Howard and Frances
Schmidt
Hemerling. On February 13, 1971 he married Connie Lou Danielson in Burlington. She died May 19, 2000.
Mr. Hemerling was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked in Maintenance at J.I. Case Co. retiring in 2003. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and John Wayne movies, going to 34 Raceway, hunting, and boating. He always kept busy and enjoyed side jobs. He spent a great deal of time with his granddaughter Chloe.
Survivors include one daughter, Chantelle Sue (Bruce) Diewold of Burlington; one granddaughter Chloe; one brother, Tom (Irene) Hemerling of Burlington; one aunt, Betty Stanley of Burlington; and special friend, Donna Whiting of Burlington.
His wife, one son in infancy, and his parents preceded him in death.
A memorial has been established for Chloe’s educational fund.
Hulda Louise Henderson

Hulda Louise Henderson, 96, of Burlington, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006, in Burlington Care Center.
Born September 14, 1909 in Franklin Township, rural Sperry, she was the daughter of Fredrick H. and Amalie Riepe Thie. She lived there until 1954 when she moved to Burlington. On August 27, 1942 she married John Lee Henderson. He died August 1, 1972.
Mrs. Henderson was a supervisor for 25 years at National Research Bureau. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and was active there for many years. She was assistant Youth Fellowship and Sunday school teacher for many years.
Survivors include one son, John Thie (Mary) Henderson of Goodyear, Arizona; granddaughter, Patricia (Jerry) (Henderson) Cleveland of Eglin AFB, Florida; grandson, Matthew Henderson of Brea, California; two great granddaughters, Kelsey Henderson and Natalie Cleveland; great grandson, D.J. Cleveland; nephews, Howard Thie of LaHarpe, Illinois and Donald Thie and Robert Thie both of Burlington; several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Her husband, parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
A memorial has been established for St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery
for perpetual care.
Alfred Henning

Alfred C. Henning, 91, of Burlington, formerly of Bettendorf and Fairfield Bay Arkansas died at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at Bickford Cottage.
Born May 3, 1914 in Galena, Ill. He was the son of Alfred Klaus and Anna Marie Stieger Henning. In 1951 he married Dorothy Nolan in Rock Island, Ill. She died in 1961. He later married Encel Breese in 1968 in Moline, Ill. She died in 1991.
Mr. Henning worked for Alcoa Aluminum as supervisor for 28 years retiring in 1978.
He was a 1932 graduate of Galena High School and a 1936 graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. He was a World War II Army Air Corps Veteran with a rank of Colonel. He also was a member of the Elks in Quad Cities, Lions in Fairfield Bay, and active in the Air Force Reserve Unit in Moline. He also was active in the Boy Scouts He enjoyed fishing and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include five sons, R. Craig Breese of Lake Bluff, Ill., David Henning of Coralville, Stephen Henning of West Burlington, Larry Henning of North Liberty, and Tom Henning on Enola, Ark.; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, both wives, one brother Donald, and one sister Katherine Feldman preceded him in death.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
