CLARION - Caroll S. Pate, 82, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holmes Lutheran Church, Holmes. Burial will be in the Holmes Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion.

JAMES A. OLESON

CLEAR LAKE - James A. Oleson, 76, of 310 N. Ninth St., died Tuesday at home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

RUTH AALBERS

LATIMER - Ruth Aalbers, 78, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.

GARY CLINTON SMITH

OSAGE - Gary Clinton Smith, 54, of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of Osage, died suddenly on Feb. 12, 1999, in Bradenton.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. There will be no visitation. A time of fellowship and a light lunch will follow the memorial service at Our Savior's. Graveside inurnment services were held at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Bay Pines, Fla.

Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Gary was retired from the U.S. Navy, where he served during the Vietnam era. He received the Navy Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 400, Bradenton, Fla., and the Fleet Reserve Association.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Clinton Smith Jr. and Benjamin Joseph Smith of Bradenton; his mother, Martha L. Smith of Phoenix; a sister, Janice (Smith) Benttine and husband, Lester, of Osage, and their children, Wayne and Cynthia; and a brother, Dennis Smith of Osage, and his children, Amanda and Jennifer.

He was preceded in death by his father Loren, and his grandparents.

TIMOTHY DEAN SMITH SR.

MASON CITY - Timothy Dean Smith Sr., 33, of 430 First St. N.E., died Monday (July 12, 1999) following a motor vehicle accident.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. David A. Anderson, of St. James Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, and will continue on Friday until time of service.

Memorials may be directed to the Timothy Dean Smith Sr. Memorial Fund.

Tim was born March 13, 1966, in Iowa City, the son of Jerry Smith and Linda (Fransen) Westendorf. He married Peggy Huerta on Dec. 26, 1986, in Reno, Nev.

Tim was a loving father and husband and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid Oakland Raiders fan, he loved racing, boxing and wresting and loved lifting weights with his sons.

He attended Mason City High School and was a member of the 1133rd National Guard. He worked for Food Services of America and Heartland Asphalt, and at the time of his death he was employed with Ruan Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Smith of Mason City; four children, Nancy of Mason City, and Billy, Tim and Kim, all at home; his parents, Linda Westendorf of Mason City, and Jerry Smith of Charles City; three sisters, Kim Jones and her husband, Joe, Mason City, and Nicky and Megan Smith, both of Charles City; four sisters-in-law, Connie, Jeannett and Debbie Huerta, all of Stockton, Calif., and April Huerta of Portland, Ore.; two brothers-in-law, Steve Huerta and Vicky Flores, Mason City, and Rudy Huerta and his wife, DeeDee, of Stockton, Calif.; a granddaughter, Alisia Jamaca; his maternal grandmother, Beverly Murphy of Mason City; his maternal great-grandfather, Carl Waddell, Mason City; his mother-in-law, Nancy Carbajel, Garner; his father-in-law, Billy Huerta and his wife, Violet, Stockton, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Westendorf and Randy Tuttle; his paternal grandparents, George and Clara Mae Smith; his maternal grandfather, Loren Murphy; his maternal grandfather, Donald Fransen; and his maternal great-grandmother, Florence Waddell.

DAVID E. TRAUB

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - David Earl Traub, 60, died June 26, 1999, in a local hospital.

Mr. Traub was born in Mason City, Iowa, and was employed by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department of the Naval Amphibious Base at the base bowling center. David was retired from the U.S. Navy as a senior chief musician for 30 years of service.

He had held the positions of a registrar and instructor at the School of Music at Little Creek Amphibious Base for 25 years. He was an All-Navy bowler for six years and won the All-Navy championship in 1982. David was elected to the Tidewater Bowling Council Hall of Fame in 1989. He was a resident pro at the Amphibious Base Bowling Center for 11 years.

David was pre-deceased by his parents, Benjamin Traub, formerly of Albuquerque, N.M., and Carroll Baago, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Julie Traub; four daughters, Tami Wright of Chesapeake, Teri Mann of Norfolk, Toby Calise of Virginia Beach, and Tonya Craig, also of Virginia Beach; four brothers, four sisters, seven grandchildren, and three sons-in-law.

A funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

DONALD J. MATHISON

CLEAR LAKE - Donald J. Mathison, 46, of 1912 N. 32nd St., died Sunday (July 11, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, 340 20th St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Jack VandenHeuvel officiating. Committal services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Emmanuel Cemetery , Grove City, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Donald James Mathison was born Aug. 2, 1952, at Paynesville, Minn., the son of Norman and Alma (Schmitz) Mathison.

Don loved to do things for other people and was always one to help if someone needed something. He was very talented at building and fixing things. He loved working on his acreage and also enjoyed working on cars and trucks. As a young man, he valued the time he spent helping his Dad with auto body work at the Chevrolet Garage in Belgrade, Minn.

He was district sales manager for Northrup King Company for more than 25 years. He was then employed by Mycogen Seeds for two years.

Don was a very active member of the Gideons and the president of the local group in Clear Lake. He was a member of the Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church for 12 years and served as a council member there. He also was active in a men's Bible study club at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Those left to cherish his memory are his three children, Debra Mathison of Clear Lake, James Mathison of Amboy, Minn., and Kris Mathison of Clear Lake; his parents, Norman and Alma Mathison, of Roswell, N.M.; and brothers and sisters, Sharon Spanier-Mathison of Watertown, S.D., Bob Mathison and his wife, Sande, of Belgrade, Minn., Jan Nehring and her husband, Mike, of Paynesville, Minn., Rick Mathison of Laughlin, Nev., and Barry Mathison and his wife, Kendra, of Roswell, N.M.

He was preceded in death by both pairs of grandparents.

MASON CITY - Martha Eckhart, 93, of Mason City, died Wednesday (July 14, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

IMELDA M. 'MELLY' MARING

CLEAR LAKE - Imelda M. "Melly" Maring, 74, of Remer, Minn., formerly of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at her son, Bill Maring's, home in Clear Lake.

Services are tentatively set for 1 p.m. Monday, July 19, 1999, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
