JAMES A. OLESON

CLEAR LAKE - James A. Oleson, of 310 N. Ninth St., passed away Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at his home.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating and Military Honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services on Saturday at the Church.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

James was born Oct. 29, 1922, at Mason City, the son of Joseph and Lucy Maud (Tabb) Oleson. James graduated from Northwood High School in 1940, then attended Mason City Junior College and Drake University.

James served in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He spent time in England, France and Germany in World War II.

James married Betty Petersen in Clear Lake on Aug. 31, 1950. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1992.

James worked for Peterson Construction of Clear Lake for 19 years. After that he was employed by the City of Clear Lake for 11 years as Clear Lake's first building inspector. He was cited in 1985 by the Iowa Association of Building Officials as a "walking encyclopedia." At that time he was the only person in Iowa who had earned certification in five different categories and one of less than 10 people in the country with that certification. He was certified as a building inspector, mechanical inspector, plumbing inspector, electrical inspector and plan examiner.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Clear Lake. He was also a 53-year member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, a charter member of Habitat for Humanity in Mason City, member of Clear Lake V.F.W. and the Iowa Association of Building Officials. He also enjoyed music and dancing.

James is survived by his sister, Shirley Groff, of Austin, Minn.; sister-in-law, Juana Kay Petersen, of West Des Moines; special friend, Eleanor Brekke, of Clear Lake; three nieces, Janet Westendorf and her husband, John, of Austin, Minn., Kathy Rapp and her husband, John, of West Des Moines, and Debbie Betts of Overland Park, Kan.; one nephew, Thomas Groff and his wife, Cindy, of Conger, Minn.; six great-nieces and nephews, Jeffrey and James Westendorf, Megan, Allison, and Kelly Rapp and Christine Betts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Betty.

RUTH REBECCA AALBERS

LATIMER - Ruth Rebecca Aalbers, Latimer, died on Tuesday (July 13, 1999), at the Mercy Medical Center-Cedar Rapids, of Cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Zion Reformed Church, Sheffield. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.

Ruth was born Aug. 19, 1920, on a farm 6 1/2 miles northeast of Latimer to Jerry C. and Lena Plagge Jurgens. She attended the Plain View country school and Latimer High School. After graduating in 1941 from Central College in Pella, she taught music and English for two years in the Owasa school system, followed by two years at Huxley.

She was united in marriage to Marion N. "Max" Aalbers, of Alton, on May 15, 1945. After living in Pella and Sioux Center, where Max taught vocational agriculture, the family returned in 1952 to Ruth's birthplace and farmed there until August of 1983, when they moved to Latimer. Max died the following January.

Ruth's life revolved around her faith, her family and her love for music. For more than 50 years, she taught piano and organ to students in the area. As a member of Zion Reformed Church, she served in many capacities through the years: church organist, pianist, youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. She held positions of leadership in Reformed Church Women's Ministry on the local, classical and synodical level. At one time, she represented Pleasant Prairie Classes on the National Board. In 1987, she was honored with a lifetime membership in this organization.

In addition, she was actively involved in the Gideon's International Bible Society, Park Society, Over 60's Club, Joy Fellowship and Neighborhood Club. She was a piano player for the Alexander Kitchen Band. In 1993, Ruth received the Outstanding Service Award from the Latimer Community Club.

Survivors include her son, Richard and his wife, Rachel, of Mt. Vernon; her grandchildren, Daniel and wife, Shelly, of Hampton, Benjamin of Oveido, Fla., and Abigail of Mt. Vernon; as well as a sister, Margaret Ruppert, of Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sisters, Wilma Koenen, Leona Mollenbeck, Evelyn Hovey and Dorothy Mussehl.

Ruth's legacy of joyfully serving others was motivated by her great love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Moved by God's grace, she spent her lifetime following her master's command to love her neighbor, as herself. As a daughter of Zion, her quiet witness touched many lives, enriching and inspiring them by her humble but powerful example. She will be greatly missed.

ROYDEN H. MARTINSON

LAKE MILLS - Royden H. Martinson, 77, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dystra officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

ROYDEN HAROLD MARTINSON

LAKE MILLS - Royden Harold Martinson, 77, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will be at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Rice Lake Chapter of the Isaak Walton League.

Royden Harold Martinson was born on Oct. 26, 1921, the son of Ingebrit and Clara (Christianson) Martinson, on his parents' farm in Winnebago County, near Lake Mills.

He was baptized on Nov. 24, 1921, and confirmed on May 19, 1935, both at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.

Royden was united in marriage to Geneva Bye on March 25, 1945, in Scarville.

Royden started work at the Lake Mills Post Office in 1941, where he worked as a clerk for 10 years. He was transferred to a rural route, working a total of 38 years. In that period of time, Royden only took five days of sick leave. The Post Office cited Royden for a "million-mile accident free" record. He also worked for the DNR part-time for 10 years after completing his regular job each day as rural mail carrier. Together, Royden and Geneva owned and operated the Mills Theater for 12 years.

He was an active member and past president of Rice Lake Chapter of Isaak Walton League and was awarded the Tobin Award for recognition of his outstanding leadership along with 50 years of dedication to this chapter.

Royden's great love for the outdoors occupied much of his spare time for many years. This included hunting, trapping and fishing. He enjoyed meeting his friends at the Grand Cafe for coffee and also playing cards at Rice Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva, of Lake Mills; two children, Linda and her husband, Gary Sigler, of Owatonna, Minn., and Larry and his wife, Mary Martinson, of Forest City; five grandchildren, Nicole Joly, Michael and Timothy Sigler, Randy Martinson and his wife, Sarah and Amy Martinson; one sister, Orene Sanden, of Lake Mills; one brother-in-law, Les Tiedman, of Wells, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Josephine Martinson, of Lake Mills; one half sister, Ode Rasmusson, of Emmons, Minn.; along with several nieces and nephews.

Royden was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and Vernon; two sisters, Arlene Gordon and Carmen Tiedman; and one half brother, Morin Martinson.

MAE EVERDING

MASON CITY - Mae Everding, 98, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Wednesday (July 14, 1999) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Poland of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Oleana Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center.

Friends may call from noon until the time of the services today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory.

Memorials may be directed to the Mae Everding Memorial Fund.

Mae Everding was born Aug. 28, 1900, in Buffalo Center, the daughter of Abe and Anna (Westendorf) Ahlfs. Mae attended schools in Buffalo Center and lived in the Buffalo Center and Rake areas.

Mae married Albert Everding on March 1, 1923, in Titonka. Albert and Mae farmed until Albert died on Sept. 17, 1961.

After his death Mae moved to Mason City in 1962. Mae enjoyed gardening, doingembroidery and crocheting.

She is survived by her son, Alvin Everding and his wife, Barbara, Mason City; her daughter, Betty DeHaan and her husband, Gerry, Thief River Falls, Minn.; four grandchildren, David Everding, Mason City, Kenneth Everding, London, England, Michael DeHaan and his wife, Diane, Thief River Falls, Minn., and Debra Breiland and her husband, Jerry, Bozeman, Mont.; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Callie Breiland, Bozeman, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mae was preceded in death by her husband in 1961, her parents, six brothers and five sisters.

IMELDA M. 'MELLY' MARING

CLEAR LAKE - Mrs. Imelda M. "Melly" Maring, 74, of 5149 Ingu Trail N.E., Remer, Minn., died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at her son's home in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 19, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and the Rev. John R. Kremer officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery , Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials to the Imelda M. Maring Memorial Fund.

Imelda was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Waterloo, the daughter of George and Anna (Kremer) O'Connell. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterloo in 1942.

Imelda married Leon William "L.W." Maring on June 14, 1947, at St. John's Catholic Church in Waterloo. They lived in Waterloo, Mason City and in 1968, moved to Clear Lake. After her husband's retirement in 1978, they moved to Lake Inguadona near Remer, Minn., where she resided until her time of death.

Imelda enjoyed reading, flowers and making quilts. She was a member of the garden club in Longville, Minn., St. Edwards Catholic Church, Longville, and a former member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Imelda is survived by four children, Barbara Karoli of Edina, Minn., June McManus and her husband, Jim, of Austin, Texas, William Maring and his wife, Sharon, of Clear Lake, and John Francis Maring and his wife, Torey, of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, Timothy Karoli, Carmen Maring, Tanya Maring, Laura Maring, Britton Hines and Benjamin Hines; one great-grandson, Lucas Maring; five brothers and sisters, Irene Gall of Waterloo, Margaret Mary Shirley of Waterloo, Francis O'Connell of Gilbertville, Daniel O'Connell of Gilbertville, and Richard O'Connell of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1996, and her sister, Adelyn Lavenz.
