August 13, 1918 - January 10, 2006

- Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa

Leonard Dee Hern 87 of Burlington died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at his residence.

Born August 13, 1918 in Gorin, Missouri, he was the son of Charles Leonard and Hattie Marie Johnson Hern. On August 3, 1946 he married Helen Marie Powell in Burlington.

Mr. Hern was a 1936 graduate of Fort Madison High School and attended business college in Fort Madison. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran serving at the rank of First Sergeant and stationed at Bellow Field in Hawaii.

He worked as a purchasing agent for Bonewitz Chemical for 36 years retiring in December of 1981. He was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church. He was very active in vision impaired support group and was a 50 year member of Burlington Noon Lions Club where he also served as secretary/treasurer, a 50 year member of Malta Lodge #318 AF&AM, a member of Camera Club where he also served as treasurer, and a member of Hospital Auxiliary. He was very active in boy scouting.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Hern of Burlington; one daughter, Judy Ray of Marion; two sons, Larry (Marti) Hern of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Greg (Sandy) Hern of Huffman, Texas; seven grandchildren, Shawn (Alison) Ray, Heather (Guy) Simons, Laura (Austin) Pollard, Eric Hern, Melissa Hern, Brett Hern, and Christopher Hern; two great grandchildren, Katie Ray and Cole Simons.

His parents and one sister, Lula (Charles) Kapfer preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established for Parkside First Baptist Church and Burlington Noon Lions.

Billy Dean Hester
June 30, 1943 - May 15, 2007

There will be no visitation. According to his wishes, the body of Mr. Hester has been

cremated
-Graveside Memorial Funeral Service and Niche Inurnment: Saturday, May 19th, at

11:00 AM in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Reverend George Rogerson will officiate

Military rites will be provided by the Burlington Veterans Honor Guard
There will be a time of fellowship and refreshment at the Christ Episcopal
Church following the graveside inurnment services

Billy Dean Hester, 63, of Burlington, Iowa died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at his home after a ten-month battle with cancer.

Born June 30, 1943 in Burlington, he was the son of Willie and Alice Cable Hester. On March 3, 1967, he married Janice Adolphson in Burlington.

Mr. Hester was a 1962 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam era. He worked at J.I. Case from August 1966 until his retirement in August of 1998.

Mr. Hester enjoyed vacationing, months in Florida, walking, riding his bike long distances, Burlington Bees and Cardinals games and visiting with people. He loved spending time with his wife, family and mom.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Hester of Burlington; two sons, Scott Hester of Burlington and Brian Hester of Utah; two sisters, Joyce (Slim) Pender of Burlington and Marilyn Mullens of Rock Island, Illinois; and six brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Hester, Raymond (Shirley) Hester, Wayne (Annamay) Hester and Larry (Barbara) Hester all of Burlington, Jim (Janice) Hester of Wayland, Iowa and David (Susan) Hester also of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents preceded him in death.

Florence C. Hester
September 6, 1918 - February 3, 2007

Florence C. Hester, 88, of Rockford, Illinois for the last 15 years, and formerly of Chicago and Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:32 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007, at Rockford Memorial Hospital, Rockford, Illinois.

Mrs. Hester was born September 6, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. She married Roy Chester Looney October 1, 1938 in Chicago. He died September 26, 1973. She then married Ernest Lou Hester October 7, 1974 in Memphis, Missouri. He died July 26, 1989.

She was of the Catholic faith. She enjoyed music and going to lunch with her friends.

Survivors include one niece, Colleen (Hugh) Stoermer of Burlington; and two nephews, Robert (Jenny) Moore of Alabama and Terry (Carol) Moore of Arizona.

Her two husbands, parents and one daughter Patricia Morgan preceded her in death.

Dennis John Heyne
October 4, 1944 - September 3, 2006

Catholic Church in West Burlington.

Dennis John Heyne, 61, of Burlington died at 12:38 p.m. Sunday, September 3, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born October 6, 1944 in Ashland, Wisconsin, he was the son of Martin and Jean Malcheski Heyne. On November 5, 1966 he married Carol Klink in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Mr. Heyne was a 1962 graduate from DePadua Catholic High School in Ashland and a 1967 graduate of Milwaukee School of Engineering. For almost 30 years he worked as an engineer at Case New Holland in Wausau and Burlington and was a master inventor.

He was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, SAE Fluid Power Society, MSOE Alumni, Patent Society, and Triangle Fraternity Alumni. He could fix anything, was very handy, and enjoyed hunting, traveling, and working on his cars.

Survivors include his wife of over 39 years, Carol Heyne of Burlington; one son, Aaron (Jennifer) Heyne of Grafton, Wisconsin; one daughter, Theresa (Brad) Vajgrt of Rockford, Minnesota; and one grandson, Benjamin.

His parents and one sister, Ellen Jean Heyne preceded him in death.

Ruth M. Hickerson
September 27, 1908 - September 15, 2006

Ruth Marie Hickerson, 97, of West Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:38 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2006, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis, Iowa.

Born September 27, 1908 in Rushville, Illinois, she was the daughter of Wheeler W. and Carrie Boyd Moore. On October 22, 1933 she married Ora D. “Johnny” Hickerson in Rushville. He died February 14, 1991.

Mrs. Hickerson was a graduate of Rushville (Illinois) High School and attended Western Illinois Teachers College in Macomb, Illinois. She taught in country schools in her younger years and later worked at Younkers, in charge of the Needlework Department, until her retirement in 1982. She also ran the grocery store at Iowa Ordnance Plant for several years. She was a member of Middletown Presbyterian Church and was a Past Worthy Matron and 50 year member of Schuyler Chapter #694 Order of Eastern Star.

She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Her whole life revolved around her family.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Elizabeth Higgins (Paul) Engel of West Burlington; two grandsons, Scott (DeeDee) Higgins of Macomb and Eric (Sarah) Higgins of Beatrice, Nebraska; six great grandchildren, Alexander and Jack Engel of West Burlington, Benjamin and Hannah Higgins of Macomb and Bailey and Riley Higgins of Beatrice, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband; infant son, Monte Lee Hickerson; daughter, Carol Higgins; parents; and two brothers preceded her in death.

July 18, 1907 - October 22, 2006

Mrs. Ruby Mary Hills, 99, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, October 22, 2006, at Klein Center of Great River Medical Center.

Born July 18, 1907 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of John Paul and Katherine Andrew Knoll. Ruby was one of twelve children and eight of them were twins (four sets).

On March 2, 1929 she married Albert Jay Hills in Burlington. He died April 27, 1971.

Mrs. Hills cleaned in homes, worked several places in the Burlington area, including production at I.A.A.P., Borax Company, Burlington Willow Ware, Midwest Biscuit, and at Marc Island Shipyard in San Francisco, California.

She was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church, V.F.W. Auxiliary, Gold Star Mothers, American Legion Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary, and the Burlington Gymnastics Club. She enjoyed dancing, playing pinochle, bingo, fishing on the Skunk River, horseshoes, horseback riding, and amateur photography.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Lee (Tom) Erickson of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Lynn Hills, Michelle Hills, Rebecca Blackman, Chris Erickson, Theresa Chabot, Ray Hills, and Ronald Hills; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons, Raymond Hills, Chester Hills (in the Korean Conflict), and Richard Hills; parents; and brothers and sisters, twins Earl and Ervin, Ruth (Ruby’s twin), Lester and Ester, Mary and Marie, Edna, Mildred, Viola, and Lillian.

Luke F. Hingst

December 31, 1912 - March 22, 2006

Luke F. Hingst, 93, of West Burlington, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at his residence with family members present.

Born December 31, 1912 in Burlington, he was the son of John (Jack) and Elizabeth Schuch Hingst. On April 14, 1941 he married Ruth L. Mohler in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Burlington.

Mr. Hingst graduated from St. John’s business school. He worked as a storekeeper for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad for 45 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, past president and member of the Eagles and its Drum and Bugle Corps, Railroad Veterans, Mainliners and served on the West Burlington City Council.

Mr. Hingst enjoyed baseball, and played semi-pro baseball. He also enjoyed playing cards, cross word puzzles, woodworking, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a devoted husband and father.

Survivors include his wife of over 64 years, Ruth Hingst of West Burlington; three sons, Donald (Gayleen) Hingst of Columbus, Nebraska, Timothy (Jenny) Hingst of San Diego, California and Robert Hingst of Burlington; two daughters, Patricia (William) Schurk of rural Burlington and Carolyn Hingst of Davenport; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Paul Hingst of Burlington; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

One daughter Marilyn, his parents, five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established for SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and Great River Hospice.
