WILLIAM 'BILL' JOHANSEN

WEST DES MOINES - William "Bill" Johansen, 68, of 408 Fifth St., Valley Junction, West Des Moines 50265, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at the Cavanaugh House, of lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Chapel, 7601 Fluhrer Drive. Des Moines, with Allan and Wayne Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sunset Chapel.

Bill was born Sept. 30, 1930 in Creston, Iowa, the son of William Martin and Olga (Collings) Johansen. Bill was united in marriage to Toni Moses on Oct. 8, 1950 in Creston. Toni was a guidance counselor at the Mason City High School for 10 years.

Bill was a long time employee of Curries Manufacturing in Mason City.

He sang in the Barbershop Quartet in Mason City and the chorus for 35 years.

Bill played Harold Hill in the Mason City production of "The Music Man" in 1968.

Bill was a pilot and loved to fly. He sang tenor and loved to sing more than anything. He loved his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 48 years, Toni Johansen, of West Des Moines; one daughter, Charlotte Draeger and her husband, Paul, of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Christopher, eleven years old, Kenneth Michael, three years old, and Nicholas William, one year old; and two sisters, Diane Froid, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Pam Reed, of Muscatine.

ALBERT H. BRANDT

CLARION - Albert H. Brandt, 88, of Clarion, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at the USA Health Care Center, Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Clarion, with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Dodge Memorial Park, Fort Dodge.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, Clarion.

MARY LOU BUSCH

SWEA CITY - Mary Lou Busch, 70, of Swea City, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Swea City, Burial will be in the Harrison Township Cemetery , Swea City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, is in charge of arrangements.

MARIE C. MEYER

ROCKWELL - Marie C. Meyer, 88, of Rockwell, died Monday (July 26, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation was held Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services today at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the St. Peter Lutheran Church or the Marie Meyer Memorial Fund.

Marie was born July 23, 1911, the daughter of Albert and Wilhelmiene (Wiele) Liekweg, in Sheffield.

On Nov. 15, 1936, Marie was united in marriage to Paul F. Meyer, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Sheffield. The couple resided in Sheffield for a year until moving to a farm in the rural Sheffield area. In 1949, the couple moved to the farm near Rockwell.

Marie was involved in different aspects of the church including membership in the Martha Circle and helping make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She was also an enthusiastic teacher of the nursery Sunday school class for many years, retiring in the late 1960s. Marie enjoyed crocheting in her spare time, especially afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was also known for her great cooking and baking, for example, her monkey bread that everyone was fond of. Paul and Marie would always take time for a cup of coffee, if anyone would stop. They also loved to go visit family and friends. Marie's most precious time was spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those thankful for having shared in Marie's life include her three sons, David and his wife, Sharon Meyer, of Mason City, Kenneth and his wife, Linda Meyer, of Rockwell and Donald and his wife, Sandi Meyer, of Clive; two sisters, Maude and her husband, Dwain Schinagel, of Sheffield, and Hilda Mae Dhondt, of Sheffield; three brothers, Robert Liekweg of Marshfield, Mo., Edward and his wife, Betty Liekweg, of Iowa Falls, and Richard and his wife, Peg Liekweg, of Iowa Falls; one sister-in-law, Helen Liekweg, of Sheffield; one brother-in-law, Marvin and his wife, Anna Mae Meyer, of Sheffield; nine grandchildren, Kim Platts, Susan, Philip, and Penney Meyer, Wendy and her husband, Doug Jorgensen, Schelly Meyer, David and his fiancee, Julie Quam, Melissa and her husband, Dave Slocum, James and his wife, Jodi Meyer; five great-grandchildren, Kari Platts, twins, Melissa and Michael Piper, and Lisa and Anne Jorgensen; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul on Jan. 19, 1999; three sisters, Edna Kock, Elsie Liekweg, and Doris Liekweg; two brothers, August and Clarence Liekweg; and one granddaughter, Lisa Meyer.

AMANA - Merry Weld Dick, 26, of Amana, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at the Mercy Medical Center-Cedar Rapids, the result of an automobile accident on Highway 151 east of Cedar Rapids.

ALGONA - Mary Casey, 99, of Algona, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, Irvington. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery , Algona.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

CLARION - A. E. "Beth" Kluss, 65, of Clarion, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at her home in Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, with the Rev. Curt Miner officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery , Clarion.

FOREST CITY - The Rev. Herbert Peterson, 98, of Forest City, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, Forest City.

GLADYS J. BUTTLEMAN

CLEAR LAKE - Gladys J. Buttleman, 94, of Clear Lake, died Friday (July 30, 1999) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jana Swenson officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to the Gladys J. Buttleman Memorial Fund.

Gladys was born Dec. 28, 1904, in Clear Lake. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1924. She worked for the Clear Lake Telephone Company from 1924-1925.

Gladys married Jesse R. Buttleman on Sept. 17, 1926, in Hollandale, Minn. She had lived her entire life in Clear Lake. Gladys enjoyed reading, flowers, playing cards and fishing with her grandchildren on Clear Lake.

Gladys was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, where she was baptized and confirmed, past president of the WWI Auxiliary, Star Club, former member of Royal Neighbors, the Clear Lake AmVets and other social clubs.

Gladys is survived by two sons, George Buttleman and his wife, Maureen, of Mendota Heights, Minn., and Edward Buttleman and his wife, Hiroka, of Tokyo, Japan; 11 grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1966, and two stepsons, Dale and Duane Buttleman.

REV. HERBERT PETERSON

FOREST CITY - The Rev. Herbert Peterson, 98, of Forest City, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, with the Revs. Lee Laaveg, Gerald Dyste and David Samuelson officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

The Rev. Herbert A. Peterson was born on the family farm near Badger, on Feb. 16, 1901, the son of Jacob and Jorgina (Halverson) Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed at Badger Lutheran Church and attended rural school near his home. He furthered his education at Waldorf Academy in Forest City, St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He was ordained on Feb. 4, 1934, at Badger Lutheran Church.

He married Rachel Folkestad in Thompson, on June 2, 1932. She died on June 24, 1998.

Rev. Peterson served churches in Merrill, Wis., Kasson, Minn., Ottawa, Ill., Minneapolis, Minn., Hendrum, Minn., Williams, Iowa and Joice, Iowa. He was an active member of these communities as well, serving on various boards and working with many "outreach" programs.

He was always interested in his Norwegian heritage and enjoyed collecting family pictures. After retirement, Herbert and Rachel were active in providing services to the residents of the Good Samaritan Center.

In 1988, the Rev. Peterson was recognized by the Iowa Health Care Association as "Clergy of the Year," providing some 20 plus years of ministerial services to Good Samaritan residents. Herbert maintained an interest in farming and farm-related activities. He enjoyed attending livestock auctions and managed to have a garden in nearly every parish he served. He died on July 29, 1999 at the age of 98 years.

Herbert is survived by his daughters, Miriam Clayton, of Sioux City, and Ruth Bakken, of Park Rapids, Minn.; sons, Herbert Peterson Jr., of Williston, N.D., and Philip Peterson, of Mora, Minn; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rachel; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
