LOUIE SMIDT JR.

BRITT - Louie Smidt Jr., 90, passed away Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at his home in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, with the Rev. Doug Farrel and the Rev. Steve Mulder officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Britt.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Louie, the son of Ludwig and Lena Heerkes Smit, was born April 16, 1909, at their farm home.

On Dec. 28, 1933, he was united in marriage to Hattie Cooper at the Kanawha Christian Reformed parsonage. The couple made their home with Hattie's parents until 1938 at which time they moved to a farm southwest of Britt where they farmed until 1974. They then moved to a home in Britt.

Louie and Hattie enjoyed traveling. Louie looked forward to running the combine every fall for his son-in-law, Harvey, even doing some last year at the age of 89. Louie was a member of the Britt Christian Reformed Church.

"Gramps," as he was affectionately called, found great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was in turn cherished by them.

Louie is survived by one daughter, Mary Lou Johnson of Forest City; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Dawn Bunnell and her husband, Jim, and sons, Mitchell and Trevor, of Kansas City, Mo., Jason Johnson of Ames and Kristi Wirtjes and her husband, Greg, of Forest City; and one sister, Annie Smidt, of Britt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, son-in-law Harvey, five brothers and two sisters.

FRANCIS 'JOHN' STURGES

ROCKWELL - Francis "John" Sturges, 75, of Rockwell, died early Sunday morning (Aug. 15, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery , with military rites conducted by members of Gallagher Post No. 208 of the American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Parish Center, with a rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the John Sturges Memorial Fund.

John was born Jan. 2, 1924, the son of Frank and Mary (Scholl) Sturges, on the family farm near Rockwell. He graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School in 1941 with 12 years of perfect attendance. Following graduation, he attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines for one year.

John was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 18, 1946, at Fort Snelling, Minn. He was a member of the 22nd Criminal Investigation Unit. Upon separation, John had received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.

On Oct. 8, 1949, John was united in marriage to Mary Cahill at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell.

John was a very active member of the community. His many endeavors included 15 years on the Rockwell-Swaledale School Board with 10 of those years as the chairman and service on the NIACC Foundation Board, the FHA Board, the Rockwell Locker Board, the North Iowa Fair Board and the Rockwell Fire Department Board, as chairman. He also served as Bath Township clerk for 35 years.

John also was a member of the Rockwell Lions Club for 33 years, a 50-year member of the VFW and was active in Gallagher Post No. 208 of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

John and Mary enjoyed spending their winters in Snow to Sun RV Park in Weslaco, Texas. In his farming operation, he raised purebred Hampshire hogs and also did custom spraying for many years.

In his spare time, he played cards, golfed and loved to go dancing. John was an avid fisherman who spent many summers at Baudette, Minn., at Lake of the Woods. John's most valued time was spent with his grandchildren and great-grandson.

Those thankful for having shared in John's life include his wife, Mary; three daughters, Dianne and her husband, Gary Philpott, of Monona, Peggy and her husband, Bob Hanfelt, of Waverly, and Jane Sturges, of Bloomington, Minn.; two sons, Jim and his wife, Leann Sturges, of Roseville, Calif. and Steve and his wife, Sheree Sturges, of Rockwell; one sister, Marcile "Sal" Palmer, of Dubuque; three brothers, Harley Sturges of Rockwell, Paul Sturges of Waverly and Clyde Sturges of Carmel, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sturges was preceded in death by his parents.

RICHARD LEE MILLER

DUMONT - Richard Lee Miller, 63, of Dumont, died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa West, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Dumont Reformed Church, Dumont, with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Monday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Richard Lee Miller was born June 23, 1936, in Butler County, a son of Rube and Dena (Penning) Miller. He was a graduate of Dumont High School.

He was a farmer. He was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church. He played music in a band called Rich's Ramblers. He also enjoyed farming and going to auctions.

He is survived by his special friend, Mary Ann Campbell, of Dumont; mother, Dena Miller, of Dumont; daughter, Marilee and her husband, Harley Knapp, of Dumont; and one grandson, Kurt Knapp, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his father and one son.

IRENE GENEVA OVERLAND

KENSETT - Irene Geneva Overland, 79, of Kensett, died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. "Sam" Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

The family of Irene Geneva Overland has requested that memorial contributions be made to Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, in her memory.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Geneva Overland was born on Feb. 20, 1920, in Kensett, the daughter of Elmer and Nellie (Medlang) Peterson.

She was united in marriage to Mandell Overland on Feb. 26, 1942. He preceded her in death.

She was a longtime member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, its Ladies Aid and the church circle.

Left to cherish her memory are two children, Ileen Dahl and her husband, Sandy, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Robert Overland of Mason City; six grandchildren, Mitchell Dahl of Minneapolis, Minn., Michelle Bratrude and her husband, Rick, of Ramsey, Minn., and Paul Overland, John Overland, Brian Overland and his wife, Debbie, and Andrew Overland, all of Mason City; four great-grandchildren, Cody, Aaron and Kathlyn Overland and Alecia Bratrude; one sister, Doris Cooper, of Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Connie Peterson; two sisters, Nora and Elsie; and one grandson, Adam.

DONALD E. 'DOC' DOCKHORN

CLEAR LAKE - Donald E. "Doc" Dockhorn, 52, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jon Anderson of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW.

Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to time of services on Wednesday at the church.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Donald E. "Doc" Dockhorn Memorial Fund.

Donald E. "Doc" Dockhorn was born on Jan. 10, 1947, in Hampton, the son of Lewis and Betty (Montandon) Dockhorn. He received his education in the Hampton school system, graduating from Hampton High School in 1965. After completing his schooling, he was inducted into the U.S. Navy in November of 1965, serving overseas in the Vietnam War as a medic until his honorable discharge in October of 1969.

He was united in marriage to Jeri Snyder on June 12, 1971, in Armstrong.

Donald joined the Globe-Gazette newspaper in Mason City on Dec. 21, 1970, as an apprentice pressman. He continued to work in the pressroom throughout the newspaper's conversion from hot metal to "cold type" and became a camera operator and plate maker as well as press operator. He was named assistant pressroom foreman in December of 1978.

Donald became an advertising sales representative in September of 1984. In 1988, he was named Lee Advertising Executive of the Year. He was selected for the honor from among about 600 sales executives from throughout Lee Enterprises, parent company of the Globe-Gazette. In February of 1989, he became circulation manager of the Globe. He returned to ad sales in 1992.

"Don will be greatly missed by the fellow Globe-Gazette employees, his friends, and the many advertising clients he served throughout his career," Globe-Gazette publisher Howard Query said upon learning of Donald's death.

Donald earned his associate of arts degree from North Iowa Area Community College in 1984.

He enjoyed video games, was self taught on the computer, also enjoyed cooking, was a Star Trek fan, had a love for German shepherd dogs, antique cars and especially his GTO, and loved the lakes in Minnesota. But his great love and enjoyment was his family and visiting with his friends.

He was a member and Quartermaster of the VFW in Clear Lake; and was very active in community and civic organizations, both in Clear Lake and Mason City. He also was active in the Habitat for Humanity organization.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jeri Dockhorn of Clear Lake; his father and mother, Lewis and Betty Dockhorn of Hampton; his mother-in-law, Mavis Snyder, of Armstrong; one sister-in-law, Margaret Lemire and her husband, Mark, of Aitkin, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Paul Snyder, of Lakeville, Minn.; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his brother, Dennis Dockhorn; and his father-in-law, Frank Snyder.

STACYVILLE - Hilda A. Adams, 94, of Stacyville, died Tuesday (Aug. 17, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Hospital, Osage.
