FANNIE JANE PAINTER

NORTHWOOD - Fannie Jane Painter, 103, of Northwood, formerly of Manly, died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings of Bethel United Methodist Church of Manly officiating. Interment will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be just prior to the service at the funeral chapel.

The family suggests memorials to the F. Jane Painter Memorial Fund.

Jane was born Oct. 1, 1895, in Crocker, Mo., the daughter of John P. and Elizabeth (Price) Roam. The family moved to Mountain Grove, Mo., where she finished high school and attended business college. She was employed several years in Mountain Grove at the poultry experimentation station as superintendent of the packing department.

Jane moved with her family to Manly in 1933. In 1941, she was married to Lester Painter at Austin, Minn. They made their home in Northwood, until his death in 1967. She then moved back to Manly.

Jane was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, former member of the Happy Hour Circle and Royal Blue Rebekah Lodge, a 50-year member of Royal Neighbors of America, a member of the young at heart club, camera club and the senior citizens club.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Eva D. Gavin, of Tucson, Ariz.; and one son, John Scott, of Mason City; one brother, Lyndell Roam, of Venice, Fla.; six grandchildren, William Simpson, of Mason City, Michael Gavin, of Escondido, Calif., John Scott, Eddy Scott, Ben Scott, and Cathy Scott; seven great-grandchildren, including Susan Easley, of Charles City, Debra Weiser, of Flagstaff, Ariz., Joshua Simpson, of Northwood, Stephanie Gavin, of Escondido, Calif., and Brittany Gavin; two great-great-grandchildren, Zach Brown, of Mason City and Meagan Easley, of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one husband; one daughter, Evelyn Simpson and six siblings.

BETTY L. COOK

MASON CITY - Betty L. Cook, 73, of 825 Eighth St. S.E., died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery , Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today and until time of service Friday morning at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Betty L. Cook Memorial Fund.

Betty was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Mason City, the daughter of Edward and Violet (Keel) Anderson. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1943.

Betty married Harold L. Cook on Feb. 2, 1946, in Minneapolis.

Betty is survived by her husband, Harold L. Cook, of Mason City; daughter, Barb Rawlings and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Rawlings, of Mason City; two sisters, Beatrice Pool, of Mason City, and Ardeen Kitner and her companion, Roy Gallup, of Mason City; three nephews; one niece; and several cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents.

ALFRED T. PETERSEN

CLEAR LAKE - Alfred T. Petersen, 81, of Clear Lake, died Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment will be at Concord Township Cemetery , Garner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Alfred Thomas Petersen, the son of Fred and Maren (Back) Petersen, was born Feb. 14, 1918, at Blairstown. He attended school at Belle Plaine and then moved with his family at an early age to Garner, where he graduated from high school in 1935.

On Jan. 20, 1940, he married Marjorie Elizabeth Becker at Garner. They farmed in the Garner-Forest City area all of their married life. Alfred worked for Hancock County from 1967-1977. After Marjorie's death in 1988, he lived in the Garner and Clear Lake areas.

On June 22, 1991, he married Allene "Fat" Fay Purviance Hollatz at the Hollatz home farm in Clear Lake. They lived in the rural Clear Lake area until the time of his death. Alfred enjoyed his family, friends, fishing, golfing and driving cars. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller and had attended church at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura.

He is survived by his wife, Allene "Fat" Fay Petersen, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Maren Olson, of Minneapolis, and her four children, Rev. Kevin Olson and his wife, Sandi, Eric Olson and his wife, Trina, Brian Olson and his wife, Elizabeth, and Kristin Olson; Penny Lovell, of Las Vegas, Nev., and her two children, Teresa Greenbaum and her husband, Howard, and Thomas Lovell and his wife, Wendy; a son, Allan "Murph" Petersen and his wife, Cindy, of Fountain City, Wis., and their three children, Marcy Larson and her husband, Eric, Ryan Petersen and his wife, Lori and Michael Surdukan; nine great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Connie Hejna and her husband, Ed and their two children, Darcey Bast and her husband, Dennis and Bob Hejna and his wife, Ranae, and Joel Hollatz and his wife, Claudia and their children, Joshua Hollatz, Peter Hollatz, Jessica Hollatz and Allan Hollatz; two stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathryn Goll, of Garner, Edna Smith, of Garner and Evelyn Daly, of Des Moines; a brother-in-law, Robert Gerhardt, of California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Petersen on Oct. 31, 1988; his parents; a son-in-law, James Olson, on Nov. 12, 1990; a daughter-in-law, Marlene Petersen, Dec. 29, 1994; a sister, Phyllis Gerhardt; and a brother, Nels Petersen.

MARION L. EASTON

CLARION - Marion L. Easton, 90, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at the Clarion Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with Mark Young officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery , Hampton.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday at Willim Funeral Home, Clarion.

CORWITH - Doris J. Green, 72, of rural Corwith, died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at her home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Corwith.

PHILLIP J. FUNK SR.

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Phillip J. Funk Sr., 85, formerly of 222 S. Fifth St., Marquette, Mich., died Tuesday (Aug. 10, 1999) at the Norlite Nursing Center, Marquette, where he had been a resident since March.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home, 926 N. Third St., Marquette, Mich., with the Rev. Paddy Palomaki, of New Life Church, officiating. Family inurnment will take place on Sept. 1, 1999 at Memorial Park Cemetery , in Mason City, Iowa.

The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born July 7, 1914, in Mason City, Iowa, to Jacob and Louise (Schmidt) Funk and had lived in this area for many years. Years ago, he worked as a butcher for the Armour Meat Company in Mason City and prior to retiring, worked as a security guard at Marquette Senior High School for many years.

He attended the New Life Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his many friends at Snowberry Heights.

Phillip is survived by two daughters, Delores (Ronald) VanHorn, of Mason City, and Louise Copple, of South Sioux City, Neb.; two sons, Phillip (Sandy) Funk Jr. and Claude (Marcia) Funk, both of Mason City; three sisters, Mary (Jesse) Allen, of Plymouth, Iowa, Regina (Robert) Ackerson, of Cedar Rapids,and Betty Funk, of Mason City; two brothers, Frederick (Marion) Funk and Frank Funk, both of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bettie, in 1997; brothers, Albert, Joe, Jake, Willie and Herman; a sister, Rosa; and three grandchildren.

EMOGENE A. GRANDSTAFF

BRITT - Emogene A. Grandstaff, 81, of Britt, died Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, of Britt, with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating.

CORWITH - Doris Jean Greene, 71, of Corwith, died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at her home, in Corwith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Corwith. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, in Corwith and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.

VACLAV 'JIM' SHINDELAR

CHARLES CITY - Vaclav "Jim" Schindelar, 78, of 601 N. Grand Ave., died Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with the Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Cemetery , Fort Atkinson.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with a Vigil Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
