NORBERT O. HOGBIN

JOICE - Norbert O. Hogbin, 78, of rural Joice, died Wednesday (Aug. 25, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice-Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer "Sam" Hernes and the Rev. Tim Nappe officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery , Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Norbert O. Hogbin was born May 19, 1921, in rural Manly, the son of Emmanuel Reason and Hilda Mae (Berhow) Hogbin. He graduated from Hanlontown High School.

On Oct. 10, 1943, he was united in marriage to Leora Hodson in Fertile.

Norbert farmed in Worth County all his life and was a longtime member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett. He absolutely loved to dance, especially the polka and he also loved his tractors and old cars. He cherished the time he spent with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed carpentry work.

He was a member of the Elks club in Albert Lea, the Manly Camera Club and volunteered his time at RSVP and the Lime Creek Nature Center.

He is survived by three children, Curtis Hogbin, of Indianapolis, Ind., Daryl Hogbin and his wife, Lisa, of St. Louis, Mo., and Diane Hammond and her husband, Steve, of Polk City; grandchildren, Michelle Sharett and her husband, Kevin, Denice Mefford and her husband, Steve, and William Hogbin and his wife, Katrina, all of Indianapolis, Ind., Daniel Hogbin and Zachary Hogbin, both of St. Louis, Mo., Tyler Hammond and Erin Hammond, of Polk City; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Meagan and Morgan Sharett and Brittany Mefford; and his special friend and companion, Peg Mannens, of Manly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

MARLYS M. ARENDS

ROCKFORD - Marlys M. Arends, 65, of 208 Eighth St. N.W., Rockford, died Wednesday (Aug. 25, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, following a lengthy illness.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W., Rockford, with Father Leo Riley officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery , Rockford.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Holy Name Catholic Church, with a rosary service at 5 p.m.

The Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main Street, Rockford, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Arends, the former Marlys Marie Zeran, was born March 15, 1934, in Rockford, the daughter of Russell Frederick and Mildred Josephine (O'Rourke) Zeran. She attended school in Rockford. On Oct. 31, 1953, at the Holy Name Church Rectory, in Rockford, she was united in marriage to John Alvin Arends.

Mrs. Arends was employed in the laundry department of the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City for several years. In 1979, she began her employment at the Sperry/Unisys Corporation, of Clear Lake. She remained there until the plant's closing in 1991.

Marlys was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Altar Guild, Women's Circle and Rosary Society of the church. She was also a member of the Rockford Women's Club, T.O.P.S. and Al-Anon. Marlys was a former volunteer crossing guard for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School District.

A noted care-giver, Marlys was often called to baby-sit the young and assist the elderly in their homes. She possessed a knack for carrying on a lively conversation on the telephone. Marlys loved to read, travel and walk with her dog, Serenity. Marlys also received great satisfaction from her cooking and flower gardening skills. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, as she made every attempt to attend their sports and school events.

Those thankful for sharing these years with Marlys are her husband, John, of Rockford; seven children, Diane Jamtgaard, of Mason City, Kathy Young and husband, Terry, of Manly, Joan Hendrikson and husband, Brian, of Northwood, Jean Ackermann and husband, Jim, of Blaine, Minn., Karen Schlader and husband, Jerry, of Rockford, John Arends and wife, Rochelle, of Rockford, and Keith Arends and his friend, Monica Breaux, of Mesquite, Texas; two brothers, Dr. Theodore "Ted" Zeran and his wife, Margaret, of Burlington, and Richard Zeran and his wife, Mabel, of Lawler; one sister, Barbara Dugan, of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, LaVonne Zeran Butterfield and her husband, Richard, of Center Point; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William Zeran; and two grandchildren.

DONALD E. SHAHAN

CLEAR LAKE - Donald E. Shahan, 32, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday (Aug. 25, 1999) at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jana Swenson, the Rev. Jonathan Swenson, the Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Steve Smith, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and continue on Monday until noon. Visitation will begin again one hour prior to services at the church.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Don E. Shahan Memorial Fund.

Don was born March 3, 1967, in Mason City. He attended school in Clear Lake and lived most of his life in the Clear Lake and Lake Mills area. He was employed at Larson Manufacturing in Lake Mills.

On Aug. 11, 1990, he married Wendy Ball at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. They have two daughters, Megan and Erin, ages 8 and 6. Don was a totally devoted and loving husband and father. He was also a well-read person who enjoyed many interests, including war and aviation history, theology, Jeeps, birding and Star Trek stories and myth.

Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and while living in the Lake Mills area, he attended Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood.

Since his diagnosis of leukemia in December of 1997, he has enjoyed witnessing and talking to people. While working at a group home in Waterloo, Don was reintroduced to Christianity by a co-worker. For the first time in his life, he developed a personal relationship with God. It was as a Christian that Don began speaking to members of his church and young people about his life and lessons he learned. Because of his faith, Don lived his final days on earth without fear or anger.

Don is survived by his wife, Wendy Shahan, of Lake Mills; two daughters, Megan and Erin Shahan, of Lake Mills; parents, Marlin (Slim) and Patricia Meints, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Kelly Carew and her husband, Paul, of Ankeny, and Cheryl Meints, of Clear Lake; three brothers, Joe and Gabe Meints and Mitch Skellenger, all of Clear Lake; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Ward, of Clear Lake; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Darlene Meints, of Sheffield; and mother-in-law, Janis Ball, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Donald Ward, and father-in-law, Clarence Ball.

His family and many, many friends will sadly miss Don. He was an inspiration and a source of joy for us all.

AMY STEFFEN GARDNER

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. - Amy Steffen Gardner, 96, of Laguna Hills, Calif., died on Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999). She was born Nov. 27, 1902, in Ludlow Township, near Waukon, daughter of Albert I. and Martha (Helming) Steffen.

She married A. Floyd Gardner, M.D. on Aug. 13, 1972, and moved to Long Beach, Calif. He died in August of 1976.

Amy lived nearly 70 years in Iowa, teaching in Clear Lake, West Des Moines and Forest City. She moved to Mason City in 1943 to teach social studies at Monroe Junior High, where she taught until retirement in 1968. During World War II, she spent summers as a nurses' aid in army hospitals in New Orleans and Honolulu. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa.

Amy was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Long Beach, where she served as an elder and as a commissioner to General Assembly. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and NEA, and in Long Beach, belonged to Ebell Club. She traveled extensively and she did exquisite needlework. After selling her Long Beach home in 1984, Amy lived at Leisure World until 1997 when failing health brought her to Laguna Hills.

Survivors include nieces, Martha Ericson (Roger) Logeson, of Rockford, Ill., and Elizabeth Fenwick, of Hillsboro, Ore., and nephew, Dr. Eric S. (Gretchen) Ericson, of Rockford, Ill.

She was preceded in death by parents; and by sisters, Laura Steffen, Althea Ericson, Frances Steffen and Marion Fenwick.

Cremation will be followed by scattering of cremains and a memorial service at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 in El Toro Memorial Park, 25751 Trabuco Road, Lake Forest, Calif., with Dr. Jack Ogden of Leisure World Community Church officiating.

EMOGENE ARDELL GRANDSTAFF

BRITT - Emogene Ardell Grandstaff, 81, passed away Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating.

Emogene, the daughter of Floyd Sr. and Loraine Carr Rummel, was born April 21, 1918, at Dows. She attended school in the Dows area and graduated from Williams High School in 1935. She attended Grant Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, graduating on June 4, 1942.

She served with the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II as a Second Lieutenant, serving in the European Theatre and the Anzio Beach Landing. She was discharged from the Army on July 15, 1943, and moved to Britt in 1958. She was formerly married to Forrest Grandstaff, of North Platte, Neb.

Emogene is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Suarez, and her children, Tino and Cristy, of Spartanburg, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Rummel, of Saratoga, Wyo.; three nieces; and two nephews; and a great-uncle in California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, James and Floyd.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy may make their memorial contributions to the West Hancock Scholarship Fund.

EVANS R. HOWE

CHARLES CITY - Evans R. Howe, 80, of 603 Second Ave, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at the Floyd county Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Bethany Alliance Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Jim McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

CHARLES CITY - Margaret L. (Mrs. Kenneth) Quinby, 81, of Salsbury Baptist Home, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.
