Brail V. Kelly, 73, of rural Burlington, died at 7:10 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.
Born February 14, 1933 at rural Danville, he was the son of Lynford and Madge Williams Kelly. On August 26, 1951 he married Lois R. Roscum in Denmark. She died August 2, 2002.

Mr. Kelly was a 1950 graduate of Denmark High School. He farmed near Denmark until 1977 and then operated Kelly Appraisal Service and was a real estate appraiser since 1981. He also sold insurance for Grinnell Mutual Insurance.

He was a member of Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ and a former Fort Madison Lions Club member. Mr. Kelly was a past board member of Pilot Grove Saving Bank and past president and board member of Fort Madison Community School District. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice (Mike) Better of Albany, New York and Wendy Slocum of Fort Madison; one son, Timothy (Sandy) Kelly of Keokuk; four grandchildren, Kelly (Jonathan) Deen, Amanda Better, Ivy Richardson, and Jessica Morss; two sisters, Joyce Hanna of Sacramento, California and Gloria Pruett of Greenville, South Carolina, and his beloved dog Tippy.

His wife, parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Relay for Life.

Rhonda Jean Kelly
May, 21, 1957 - March 21, 2007

There will be no service. According to her wishes, the body of Ms. Kelly has been

Rhonda Jean Kelly, 49, of Burlington, Iowa died at 1:21 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at Great River Medical Center.

Born May 21, 1957 in St. Joseph, Missouri, she was the daughter of Robert E. Furlong and JoAnn Farmer Witt.

Ms. Kelly was a 1975 graduate of Burlington High School. She worked as a caseworker for Hope Haven. She enjoyed yard work, yard ornaments and spending time with her grandchildren. She also frequently provided a foster home for pets and donated food to the Animal Shelter.

Survivors include two sons, Jeremy (Melinda) Steele and Josh (Jessica) Steele both of Burlington; her mother, JoAnn (Wayne) Witt of Winter Park, Florida; four grandchildren, Alex Steele, Sean Steele, Logan Steele and Ethan Steele; one sister, Sherri (Ray) Tedrow of Burlington; and one brother, Steve Witt of Mahomet, Illinois.

Her father preceded her in death.

Frances Kent
September 14, 1907 - March 5, 2006

Frances Kent, 98, of Burlington died of natural causes 3:30 a.m. Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.

Born September 14, 1907 at her grandparents’ farm home near Raritan, Illinois, she was the daughter of Ernest and Mamie Cook Sweasy. On June 2, 1962 she married Thomas E. Kent. He died June 27, 1992.

Mrs. Kent was a graduate of Stronghurst High School and Burlington Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed by Dr. J. H. Murry for over 30 years. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and Burlington YMCA/YWCA.

Survivors include two step-sons, Dan (Juliene) Kent of Ottumwa and John Kent of Phoenix, Arizona; two step-grandchildren; a nephew and several cousins.

Her husband; parents; step-father, Oscar Sanderson; step-brothers, Dick, Jim, Kenny, Guy and Max Sanderson preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for Messiah Lutheran Church

Donald E. Kerns
April 13, 1928 - December 24, 2006

Pastor Carl Engstrom will officiate.
Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard
following the services.
-Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa

Bethany Lutheran Church

Donald E. Kerns, 78, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 24, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born April 13, 1928 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, he was the son of Hugh Elliot and Garnett Juanita Danels Kerns. On July 4, 1948 he married Donna Lee Reckner in Burlington.

Don attended Burlington schools and was a Navy veteran serving during World War II from 1946 until 1948 as Seaman First Class.

While living in California he was a honeycomb bonder for Northrup Aircraft. He retired after 25 years with the Iowa Correctional Facilities in Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant where he helped write policy for the Medium Security Unit in Mount Pleasant when it opened in the mid 1970s.

He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 10102 and a 50 year member of Beach Cities Masonic Lodge AF&AM in Hawthorne, California. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, collecting coins, going to auctions, mushroom hunting at the farm, caring for horses, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Lee Kerns of Burlington; two daughters, Gail Ann Kerns and Laura Lee (Jim) Hopkins both of Burlington; four grandchildren, Mark Allen Hopkins, Brian James Hopkins, Amanda Diane Carruthers and Kyle George Carruthers; and one brother, Danny Charles Kerns of Liberty, Missouri;
His great granddaughter, Hailey Ann; parents; and two brothers, Hubert Kerns and Max K. Kerns preceded him in death.

March 4, 1951 ~ July 22, 2008

Debi S. Kinney, 57, of rural West Burlington died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 4, 1951 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Page A. Jr. and Shirley L. Roberts Randall. On June 6, 1970 she married Randall L. Kinney in Biggsville, Illinois.

Mrs. Kinney was a graduate of Union High School near Biggsville and received her bachelors and masters degrees at Western Illinois University. She was a teacher for 32 years, most recently at James Madison Middle School.

Mrs. Kinney was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She was active in the church choir and in church activities. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and taking motorcycle trips with her husband..

Survivors include her husband, Randall L. Kinney of rural West Burlington; one daughter, Heidi Danise (Dustin R.) Van Winkle of Mediapolis; one son, Daniel Lee Kinney of Burlington; one grandchild, Alexis; her mother, Shirley L. Randall of Biggsville; one brother, Robert (Jeanette) Randall of Biggsville; four sisters, Ann (David) Propst of West Milton, Ohio, Barb (Bob) Bailey of Gladstone, Karen (Tim) Bower of Muscatine and Judi Randall of Monmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her father and one sister, Sharon preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for the Deborah “Debi” S. Randall-Kinney Scholarship Fund for students entering the education field.

David Anthony Kirby
July 28, 1951 - July 22, 2006

David Anthony Kirby, 54, of Burlington died Saturday, July 22, 2006, in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born July 28, 1951 in Ottumwa he was the son of Teddy Roosevelt and Ruby Darlene Billings Kirby. He was previously married to Vicki Anderson Kirby.

David was a material handler for Global Link Technologies in Burlington and previously worked for Hope Haven and Vista Bakery.

He attended Four Square Church faithfully. He loved playing guitar and singing gospel songs.

Survivors include two sons, Chad Luers of California, Nathan Kirby of Keota; one daughter, Heather Sawyer of Ankeny; six grandchildren; mother, Ruby Paxton of Muscatine; four sisters, Delores Wilkens of Davenport, Patricia Downing of Ottumwa, Barbara Jean (Bud) Ash of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Marilyn (Ken) Paulding of Des Moines; two brothers, Steve Kirby of Ottumwa, and Mark Kirby of Muscatine; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

His father, Teddy Kirby; stepfather, Kenneth Paxton; brother, Dale; and sister Carole preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.

Richard E. Klein
September 19, 1934- November 28, 2005

Richard Estel Klein, 71, of Burlington, died at 12:10 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born September 19, 1934, in Sweet Springs, Missouri, he was the son of Clarence and Wanetta Carey Klein. On August 21, 1959, he married Doris Jean Barnes in Ogden, Utah.

Mr. Klein was a jet mechanic in the Air Force for 24 years, retiring in 1977. He then worked in maintenance for Great River Medical Center from 1978 to the time of his death.

He was a graduate of Nauvoo-Colusa High School and received his associate of applied science degree from Southeastern Community College. He was a Vietnam War Air Force veteran, where he attained the rank of tech sergeant. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed computers.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Klein of Burlington; two daughters, Geraldine Kay Klingseiss of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Debra Jean Dahlsten of Burlington; four sons, Richard Allen Klein and Blair Allen Klein, both of Burlington, Bob Lee Klein of Blandinsville, Illinois, and Rob Lee Klein of West Burlington; 30 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Delbert Klein of Stronghurst, Illinois.

His parents preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.
