KANAWHA - Melvin O. Burseth, 85, of Kanawha, formerly of Garner, died Friday (Sept. 24, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Salem Lutheran Church Chapel, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery , rural Lake Mills.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, in Lake Mills and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church chapel.

LIVERMORE - Mildred A. Hefty, 92, formerly of Livermore, died Thursday (Sept. 23, 1999) at the Caseman Hospital, in Albuquerque, N.M.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Livermore, with the Rev. Dale Reisner officiating. Burial will be at the Swiss Cemetery , in Hardy.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Harris Funeral Home, in Livermore.
JAMES LEROY BENNETT
SUN CITY, Ariz. - James LeRoy Bennett, 71, formerly of Mason City, died in Sun City, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at Ranfranz Funeral Home, Rochester, Minn., with Pastor Chris Brekke, of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue from noon until 2 p.m. Monday at the Ranfranz Funeral Home, 1705 Elton Hills Dr. N.W., Rochester, with a Masonic service at 1:30 p.m., followed by the funeral service. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery , St. Charles, Minn. where full military rites will be conducted.
At Jim's request those considering an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Shrine Hospital for Children in St. Paul, Min. Born on July 27, 1928, in Rochester, Minn., to Louis and Helen (Young) Bennett, James LeRoy Bennett moved to Mason City, Iowa at a young age where he lived until joining the U.S. Navy in 1945. After serving more than eight years, including the period during the Korean Conflict, he returned to Rochester in 1952. His work there included more than 18 years with IBM in the area of Production Control, with part time efforts in small farming, serving as a special sheriff's deputy in Dodge and Olmstead counties and as a member of the Rochester Police Reserve.
Activities with law enforcement encouraged him to become a successful and award winning member of the Sheriff's Pistol Teams. That also provided the opportunity to teach gun safety to young people and CPR/emergency assistance to IBM co-workers.
A move to the San Francisco area put him to work in the shipyards, where he remained for over eight years, returning to Rochester upon the serious illness of his parents in 1989. He moved to Mason City in 1992 after living in Arizona for a short time.
Jim had been active in several organizations including the American Legion, serving as Commander of the Eyota Post. For the past several years he had held dual Masonic memberships in Hiram Lodge No. 83 of Kasson, Minn. and Benevolence Lodge No. 145 in Mason City, as well as Osman and El Kahir Shrines. He served as president of the North Iowa Shrine Club in 1996 and co-chaired circus activities.
Jim is survived by his wife, Elaine; five children, James Jr. of Hayfield, Minn., Randy and Sheila, of Rochester, Patti Ressie, of Waconia, Minn., and Vicki Christensen, of Winona, Minn.; three brothers, Marlowe, Maurice "Pete" and Robert; 11 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him, J. Hue and Martha Young; parents; wife, Jean; two sisters, three brothers and two grandchildren.

CURTIS ROBERT SCHAUMBURG
CLARION - Curtis Robert Schaumburg, 34, of Clarion, died Thursday (Sept. 23, 1999) at the Hamilton County Hospital, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Woolstock, with the Rev. William VanNostrand officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery , in Eagle Grove.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the William Funeral Home, in Eagle Grove.

ROGER E. SAWYER
MASON CITY - Roger E. Sawyer, 85, of 186 Lakeview Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 23, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Buckingham Cemetery , Traer.
The family will greet family and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. His body was cremated at his request.
Roger was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Traer, Iowa to Louis and Nell (Tesmer) Sawyer. He graduated from Traer High School, attended Iowa State College and graduated from Kansas City Radio School. He joined KGLO radio in 1937 and was named Chief Engineer in 1945.
He was married to Delores E. Bangston on March 31, 1940 at her parents home in Goldfield. During his career at KGLO, television was introduced in 1954 and in 1958 a sister station, KEYC-TV was built in Mankato, Minn. He retired from KGLO in 1969 and has enjoyed trout fishing, golf, photography, amateur radio and a variety of gadgets. In his later years, he especially enjoyed having coffee every morning with his friends at the Elks.
He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity, the First United Methodist Church, the Mason City Country Club and a life member of the BPOE #375 (Elks). He was a licensed amateur radio operator WOAXT for 63 years.
He is survived by his wife, Delores E. Sawyer, of Mason City; daughter, Suzanne Gulden and husband, Dr. Kent, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; son, Tom Sawyer and wife, Joan, of Clear Lake; daughter, Kaye Steger and husband, Ken, of Pittsburg, Texas; grandchildren, Dr. Wendy Gulden, Christopher Gulden, Jeffrey Sawyer, Stephen Sawyer, Kerry Sawyer, Scott Parks and Natalie Parks; great-grandchildren, Graham and Collin Sawyer, Courtney and Jack Parks.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

ARLENE MARIE (RIVEDAL) GILL
WEST DES MOINES - Arlene Marie Gill, 72, of West Des Moines, died of a heart ailment Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) at St. Luke's Hospital, in Kansas City, Mo. She died on a plane enroute to Seattle, Wash. to see her brother and the plane was diverted to Kansas City.
Her memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Des Moines, with Monsignor Robert Hoefler officiating.
Her body has been donated to the Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements were by the Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines.
Arlene was born in Mason City to Sivert and Anna (Swendal) Rivedal. She attended school here and graduated in 1946. She then attended St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Mason City, graduating in 1953.
Arlene was a registered nurse and a certified emergency nurse. She had worked at Broadlawns Medical Center, Norwest Hospital and Hospice in Des Moines.
Arlene was active in the community by co-founding intramural sports for girls at St. Theresa's. She was softball and basketball coach for girls and youth leader at St. Theresa's. She was a volunteer nurse at WDM Dowling High School. Her inspiration was a Bible Study, Fellowship International.
Her husband, Gary Gill, formerly of Kensett, died July 13, 1999.
She is survived by a son, Gary and his wife, Karol, of San Antonio, Texas; five daughters, Cheryl Gill, of LaCrosse, Wis., Lori Liljedahl and her husband, Ken, of Des Moines, Valerie Gill, of Des Moines, Renee Johnson and her husband, Steve, of Onalaska, Wis., and Melanie Hansman and her husband, Frank, of Des Moines; and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Patricia Fandel and her husband, John, of Golden, Colo., Rosalie Olson and her husband, Paul, of Mason City, Bonita Kral and her husband, Roger, of Glenville, Minn., and Sandra Anderson and her husband, Wayne, of Athelstade, Wis. Her immediate family consisted of one brother, Stanley Rivedal, of Bethel, Wash. and some nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and four brothers, Arnold, Harold, Clarence and Hawkens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Central Iowa, St. Theresa's Youth Ministry or Iowa Right to Life Committee.
