DICK D. FOX

MASON CITY - Dick D. Fox, 72, of 9 Asbury Place, Mason City, former owner and operator of Mason City Roofing, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Nils "Chris" Hellevik officiating. A flag presentation will be conducted at the church by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Dick Dwayn Fox was born on May 27, 1927, in Mason City, son of Llewellyn and Frances (Godderz) Fox. He was a 1945 graduate of Mason City High School and attended Mason City Junior College before enlisting in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, where he received his naval training. He served as a fireman first class aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt on its shakedown voyage through the Panama Canal.

After his discharge, he returned to Mason City and worked in his father's business, Mason City Roofing Company. Dick purchased the company in 1965 and served as president and treasurer of the firm, retiring in 1990.

On April 12, 1948, he married Mary Catherine Doolan at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, In 1998, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Jeykll Island, Fla.

Dick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher and on the Board of Buildings and Grounds. He was a member of the American Legion, Rockwell Post.

He is survived by his wife, Katie Fox, of Mason City; two children, Steven Fox and his wife, Ruth, of Mason City and Ellen Carter and her husband, Michael, of Tallahassee, Fla.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Fox, of Goulds, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Bernice) Cinkle and Mrs. Paul (Elizabeth) Poppen; and two brothers, Kenneth Fox and the Rev. Robert Fox O.S.B.

MAURICE SQUIER

ST. ANSGAR - Maurice Squier, 89, of St. Ansgar, formerly of Osage, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Champion Funeral Home.

LUCILLE B. EBELING

MASON CITY - Lucille B. (Mrs. Leo) Ebeling, 83, 318 8th St. S.E., died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with Father Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. There will be a parish scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. tonight at Fullerton's. Visitation will continue from 9 until 11 a.m. on Friday at Fullerton's.

Mrs. Ebeling, the former Lucille Barbara Watson, was born May 11, 1916, in Sexton, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Rose Watson. On Nov. 11, 1941, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Buffalo Center, she was united in marriage to Leo John Ebeling. The couple has made their home in Mason City all of their married life.

Lucille was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Cecelia Circle of the church. Lucille loved to go fishing, especially at the family's cabin on Clear Lake. She also enjoyed the outdoors in many ways, and loved to share the story of pheasant hunting the day after their wedding. Until the time that she entered Good Shepherd two years ago, Lucille was noted in her family for her cooking and knitting ability.

Those thankful for sharing Lucille's life are her husband of nearly 58 years, Leo, of Mason City; three children and their spouses, John and Jeannette Ebeling, of Clear Lake, Mary Jane and David Johnson, of Victoria, Minn., and Richard Dick and Julie Ebeling, of Mason City; two brothers, Clarence Swatty Watson of Britt, and Kenneth Bud Watson and his wife, Donna, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Schlueger and Shirley Watson, both of Britt; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Miller and Florence Stuflick.

MARY J. BUTCHER

ROCKWELL - Mrs. Mary J. Butcher, 58, of 18567 140th St., Rockwell, died Tuesday morning (Oct. 19, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Rockwell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery , Mason City.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. today and Friday morning at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. 3rd St. Rockwell. Further visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Mary J. Butcher memorial fund.

Mary was born on August 10, 1941, in St. Paul, Minn., to Alan LaClair and Rose Marie Schmidt. She was later adopted by her parents, Herbert and Lillian Schwanke. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1959 and then received her registered nursing degree from Iowa Lutheran in Des Moines in August of 1962.

She was employed at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and then the Rockwell Nursing Home.

On Dec. 8, 1962, at Our Saviour' s Lutheran Church in Mason City she was united in marriage to Merlyn Butcher. To this marriage were born two sons.

She was a member of the Rockwell United Methodist Church, TOPS, and a past member of the Rebecca Lodge in Mason City.

Mary was an avid Beanie Baby collector. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and was an excellent seamstress and cross stitch worker. She also enjoyed singing with the Praise Team singers at the church and was an especially proud grandmother and loved her time with her grandchildren.

Those thankful for sharing Mary's life include her husband of 36 years, Merlyn of Rockwell; her two sons, Jeffrey and his wife, Carlene, Butcher, of Belmond, and Gregg Butcher and his fiancee, Melanie Mintz, of Denver, Colo.; three grandsons, Phillip, Brandon and Eric; and three brothers, Al and his wife, Marilyn, Schwanke, of Albuquerque, N.M., William and his wife, Corin, Hillman, of Ripon, Calif.; and Steven and his wife, Barbara, Hillman, Pleasanton, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her biological and adoptive parents; and one brother, Roger Schwanke.

ALVERDA LOUISE KOENEN

MERSERVEY - Alverda Louise Koenen, 79, of Meservey passed away Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.

Funeral services for Alverda L. Koenen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Jim Gouchenouer officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Alverda, the daughter of Carl and Elma Gobeli Hopkey, was born Jan. 29, 1920, on the family farm north of Meservey in Cerro Gordo County. She grew up in the Meservey area where she attended country school and graduated from Meservey High School in 1937. Following graduation from high school, Alverda attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Alverda was united in marriage with Leland Koenen on May 4, 1942, in Bethany, Mo. The couple made their home in Meservey. During their 37 years of marriage, Alverda worked as a housewife and mother and cooked at Chapman's Truck Stop in Belmond. Leland passed away Feb. 2, 1979. Alverda continued to live in Meservey. She worked as a cook at the Thornton schools for 10 years. Alverda also cooked at the Methodist Camp in Clear Lake, which she dearly loved. She also cleaned the Meservey Bank for a number of years.

Alverda was active in many community projects. She helped at the polling sites during the elections in Meservey. She was a member of the Meservey Area Promotional Organization, Area Community Commonwealth, Meservey Women's Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, Meservey Senior Citizens, and the Mason City Chapter of the United Ostomy Association. She was a lifelong member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, where she was currently serving as the church's financial secretary.

Alverda is remembered as a wonderful mother and friend. She most enjoyed being with her friends and baking sweets for her neighbors.

Alverda is survived by a daughter, Dixie Lee VanHorn and her husband, Duane, of West Des Moines; a son, Lynn Edwin Koenen, of Dixon, Ill.; four grandchildren, Terri and her husband, Perry, Holtkamp, Brian and his wife, Amanda, VanHorn, Jeramy and Eric Koenen; two great grandchildren, Brandon and Dillon Holtkamp; one sister, Merle Steenhard and her husband, George, of Rockwell; one brother-in-law, Jake E. Koenen and his wife, Mavis, of Meservey; two sisters-in-law, Grace Pals and her husband, Bert, of Meservey, and Lyda Wiemann, of Meservey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leland; and one brother, Ardell Hopkey.

TRAVIS ROBERT GRIMM

OSAGE - Travis Robert Grimm, 26, of Waterloo and formerly of Osage, died on Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from injuries he received in an automobile accident east of Mitchell on Friday, Oct. 15.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Father Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St. Osage, with an 8 p.m. Scripture service.

Travis was born on Nov. 29, 1972, in Osage, the son of Robert Grimm and Marjo (Koster) Grimm. He attended Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1991.

Travis married Dawn Hackman on April 10, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They lived in Waterloo where he was employed by Industrial Fabrication and Machine.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Grimm, of Waterloo; mother, Marjo Grimm, of Osage; and father, Robert Grimm, of Lake Mills; two brothers, Jason Grimm, of Osage and Kenneth Grimm and his wife, April, and their children, Taylor and Morgan, of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Aloysius and Adella Koster; and paternal grandparents, Norma and Charles Wells.
