Harold William Loose

Harold William Loose, 87, of Burlington died at 12:29 AM Saturday, August 5, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born November 16, 1918 in Burlington, he was the son of Albert and Helen Johnson Loose. On May 29, 1942, he married Ozetta Wagler in Burlington.

Mr. Loose was a graduate of Burlington High School. He completed Army signal school training at Des Moines, IA, and Camp Kobler, CA; he then completed Radar Systems training at the University of Colorado. Harold was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran serving in the Signal Corps as a Staff Sergeant, he served in the Elite 23rd Headquarters, Special Troops, the Army’s first massive tactical deception operation in Europe; he served as a Cryptologic Message Center Chief, supervising 25 enlistees and providing de-coded communications directly to general Omar Bradley; he received combat credit for the following campaigns: Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland. He was awarded the European African-Middle Eastern Campaign badge, The Rifle Marksman badge, and the Good Conduct medal.

Mr. Loose was a Senior Weapons Inspector, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, with the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant until his retirement in 1974. Following his retirement he worked as an associate at Pioneer Supply Co. in Burlington. He was a life-long member of First United Church of Christ in Burlington. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; the American Association of Retired Persons; and Burlington Civic Music. He was a former member of the Eagle Service Organization.

His interests included time with beloved family, reading, church activities, golf, table tennis and throwing horseshoes. Mr. Loose was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and followed their football and basketball competitions with great enjoyment.

Survivors include his wife Ozetta Loose of Burlington; one son Greg Loose and his wife Sandra of Woodbridge, Virginia; two grandchildren Michelle E. Schrotz and Scott A. Loose; and one brother Donald Loose.

His parents, two sisters Margaret Stigge, and Arlene Loose (in infancy); two brothers Eugene Loose and Dale Loose (in infancy) preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Christ.

Gilbert Sylvester Lotz
January 27, 1924 - January 22, 2007

Gilbert Sylvester Lotz, 82, of Port Charlotte, Florida and formerly of Burlington, Iowa died at 3:40 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2007, at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte.

Born January 27, 1924 in Grand Ridge, Illinois, he was the son of Elmer Alfred and Martha Josephine Kattner Lotz. On October 3, 1953 he married Agnes M. Thomes in New London Presbyterian Church. She died December 22, 1989. On September 28, 1991 he married Marjorie L. Gray in Burlington.

Mr. Lotz attended schools in Grand Ridge and Streator, Illinois where he graduated high school.

He worked in assembly and shipping at J.I. Case Co. for 26 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Lotz of Port Charlotte; one son, David Lotz of Pooler, Georgia; one daughter, Cheryl Lotz of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Sandra Gray of Burlington and Cheryl Norton of New London, Iowa; one step son, Kenneth D. Gray of Kenosha, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Lotz of Kaysville, Utah; two sisters, Lorraine Richard of Vincennes, Indiana and Judith Thielbert of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

His first wife and parents preceded him in death.

Alma Frances Luckenbill
March 12, 1906 - April 12, 2006

Alma Frances Luckenbill, 100, who resided with her daughter, Karen Wagner, of Jacksonville, IL, since 1995 died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. She moved to Burlington, IA, in the early 1960's and previously lived in Yates City, IL, and Little York, IL.

Born March 12, 1906, in Pasadena, CA, she was the daughter of Louis and Annie Volney Jensen. On August 18, 1932, she married Paul A. Luckenbill in St. Paul, MN. He died January 7, 1973.

Mrs. Luckenbill was a 1923 graduate of St. Ansgar High School, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1930 from Cornell College, and her Masters of Science from Western Illinois University in 1963. She had additional studies at the University of Colorado, University of Utah, Northern Illinois University, and University of Iowa. She was an educator and school librarian. Her career included Huron Consolidated School in Oakville, IA, teaching upper grades from 1925 - 1927; Laurens Junior High School in Laurens, IA, from 1928 - 1929 teaching English; Wapello Junior High School in Wapello, IA, in 1930 teaching English; Genoa High School in Genoa, IL, from 1930 - 1934 teaching English and Social Studies; Yates City High School in Yates City, IL, from 1944 - 1951 teaching English and Social Studies; Little York Township High School, Little York, IL, from 1951 - 1960 teaching English and directing plays; Oak Street Junior High School in Burlington from 1960 - 1963 teaching English and from 1963 - 1967 where she served as school Librarian; Burlington High School in Burlington, IA, from 1967 - 1971 as school Librarian; Southeastern Community College in Burlington, IA, from 1969 - 1971 as evening Librarian; and after her retirement, she was employed at Notre Dame High School in Burlington, IA, as a school Librarian.

Mrs. Luckenbill was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Honor Society, and national and local organizations of Retired Teachers. She enjoyed her association with retired teachers, volunteer hospital work, her sorority friendships, directing school plays, travel and reading, especially poetry.

Survivors include two daughters Shirley (Arnold) Rabe of West Burlington, IA, and Karen Wagner of Jacksonville, IL; four grandchildren, Michael Melton, Julie Melton, Kristin Oakley and Kara Wagner; three step-grandchildren, Timothy Rabe, Debbie Mathews and Jaimie Rabe; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Her husband, parents, and two brothers, Raymond Jensen and Vernon Jensen, preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Virginia L. Lutenegger
June 23, 1917 - July 7, 2006

Virginia Louise (Senn) Lutenegger, 89, of New London since 1964 and formerly of Burlington, died at 1:25 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2006, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born June 23, 1917 in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Kathryn (Boeckel) Senn. On November 3, 1939 she married Alfred Lutenegger in West Burlington. He died September 16, 1963.

She was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and enjoyed sewing, reading, mushrooming and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy K. (Eiden) El-Khatib of Fairfax, Virginia; a son, Alan J. (Rhonda) Lutenegger of Sunderland, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Amany, Nadia, Hanan and Tarik El-Khatib and Damon, Danielle, Ashton and Jaren Lutenegger; and two sisters, Esther Schroder of New London and Ethel Helms of Burlington.

Her husband, infant child, parents, four brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice of Central Iowa.

Lavelle Magel
November 30 1923 - June 23, 2007

According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Magel has been cremated.

Lavelle Magel, 83, of West Burlington, Iowa died at 3:19 p.m., Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 30, 1923 in May, Texas, she was the daughter of Charles and Ida Morrison. She married Robert H. Magel January 24, 1942 in Brownwood, Texas. He died June 16, 1995.

Mrs. Magel attended school in May and Brownwood, Texas. She worked and retired from Sylvania Electric in Burlington. She enjoyed gardening, trips to Texas for family reunions, traveling and going on cruises with her family. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary 10102 and the Animal Protection League.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie (Dick) Garnjobst of Burlington; two sons Jerry (Joan) Magel of Burlington and Larry (Tina) Magel of West Burlington; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Morrison of Texas and Cecil Morrison of North Carolina; and one sister, Ida Belle Morrison of New Mexico.

Her parents, husband, two sisters, and three brothers preceded her in death.

Donations or memorials will be established to the Local Chapter of the Animal Protection League.

Bessie Markus
May 14, 1928 - June 12, 2006

Bessie Markus, 78, of Burlington died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born May 14, 1928 in Washington, she was the daughter of Chris and Bertha Benendyck Rayburn. At age four, she and her six brothers and sisters were orphaned when their parents died in an automobile accident. Mrs. Markus spent the next ten years in an orphanage.

Mr. and Mrs. Todd took in Mrs. Markus at age 14 where she worked as a maid for 34 years until she met Raymond. On May 14, 1977 she married Raymond Markus in Burlington.

She was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir, a nursery attendant and an AWANA Club leader. She enjoyed crafts, painting and travel, and loved to paint houses.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Markus of Burlington; and two stepsons, Robert Markus of Cedar Rapids, and Willard Frank Markus of West Burlington.

A memorial has been established for West Avenue Baptist Church.

According to Mrs. Markus’ wishes, her body has been cremated.
