MARY MINNIE BRADEN

MASON CITY - Mary Minnie Braden, 85, of 302 Thirteenth St. SE, died Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at the Manly Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Riverside Friends Church, 527 N. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Spencer Thury officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery , Mason City.

Her body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

Mary Minnie Braden was born May 1, 1914, in Selech, Poland, daughter of Michael and Helen Laskewick. Mary grew up in Poland and moved at the age of 14 to the United States.

She worked at Jacob E. Deckers for many years until retiring.

Mary enjoyed nature and animals. She loved to garden and do yard work.

She is survived by one daughter, Dianne Holt and her husband, Les, Mason City, and four nieces and nephews, Bill, Rose Marie, Julie and Jim.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Nina Golbuff.

JOHN EDWARD O'BANION

MASON CITY - John Edward O'Banion, 74, of 401 21st St. SE, died Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. SE, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. NE, Mason City, with a scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

John Edward O'Banion was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Dougherty, son of Claude and Rena (Cassidy) O'Banion. He married Mary Lavonne Rice on Aug. 21, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.

At the age of 10, John and his family moved from Dougherty to Mason City. He attended Mason City High School and then served in the Navy during World War II. He was stationed in San Diego, Calif., on the USS Reno.

John drove truck for McCoys Trucking and then with Briggs Transportation until his retirement in 1975. He loved spending time with his family, walking in the mall with his friends and watching television. He was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW, St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Teamsters' Local 828.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Lavonne O'Bannion, Mason City; five children, Michael O'Banion and his wife, Barbara, Littleton, Colo., Patrick Obanion and his wife, Ginger, Cedar Rapids, Timothy O'Banion and his wife, Darla, Redfield, Teresa Garlock, Mason City, and Michelle Kittleson and her husband, Joel, Mason City; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special pet, his dog Suzie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

LORETTA C. BROWN

MASON CITY - Loretta C. Brown, 84, formerly of 1618 N. Carolina, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Nielsen, pastor at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. SE, Mason City.

Loretta was born on Oct. 19, 1915, at Badger, Iowa, in Webster County. She was the daughter of Clarence and Laura Kendall Thompson. She attended school in Badger and was baptized and confirmed at the Badger Lutheran Church.

She was employed as a waitress and cleaning person for the Revira Hotel in Onawa. On March 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Clifford C. Brown in Sioux City. In 1957 they moved to Mason City.

She enjoyed vegetable gardening and was especially adept at her flowers. If there was a stray child in the North Carolina Avenue area they could usually be found at her kitchen table eating cookies. She also enjoyed reading in her spare time. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

Loretta is survived by her son, Wesley Lee and his wife, Nancy, Collette, Mason City; one daughter, Shirley Jean Collette-Hollis and her husband, Henry Hollis, Framingham, Mass.; two stepsons, Horace James Brown, Aurora, Colo., and Donald Brown, Lake Mary, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Mabel M. Teddlie, Westman Row, La.; one brother, Jessie O. Thompson, Kent, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford, in June 1986; two sisters, Irma and Mildred; two brothers, Glen and Vearl; one stepson, Charles; and one grandson, Stephen Szretter.

MELVIN ADAMS

STACYVILLE - Melvin Adams, 63, died Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at his home in Stacyville of natural causes.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Inurnment will be at Visitation Cemetery with military rites by the Stacyville Legion Post 569.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the church hall with a wake service beginning at 7 p.m.

Champion Funeral Home of Osage is in charge of all arrangements.

Melvin was born March 5, 1936, at Stacyville, the son of Benedict F. and Caroline (Weber) Adams. He attended Visitation School in Stacyville.

Melvin served in the U. S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash., for two years. After service he returned to Stacyville and was employed by Stacyville Lumber for many years.

Melvin was a member of the Austin Eagles Club and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was also an avid fan of NASCAR Winston Cup racing and attended many races.

He is survived by one brother, Gerald Adams of Osage; one sister-in-law, Jennie Adams of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ray.

FREDERICK WILLIAM JURGENA

HAMPTON - Frederick William Jurgena, 87, died Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at Franklin General Nursing Facility, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley with the Rev. Jack Ritsema officiating. Burial will be in Washington Reformed Church Cemetery , rural Ackley.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

BERTHA E. WAY

ROCKWELL - Bertha E. Way, 96, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rockwell Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Bertha E. Way Memorial Fund.

Bertha was born on Jan 21, 1903, near Rockwell, the daughter of Henry and Elise (Oeltjenbruns) Brunstein. She was a lifetime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed.

On May 15, 1932, she was united in marriage to Arthur F. Way at St. Peter Lutheran. She spent her life making a home for herself and Arthur in Rockwell.

She enjoyed her garden, cooking meals and making buns and bread from scratch. She was an avid reader of the Bible and living the simple life that it taught.

Those thankful for sharing her life include several nieces and nephews.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur in 1988; three brothers; and one sister.
