WILLIAM ANDREW SMITH

ADAMS, Minn. - William Andrew Smith, 87, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Adams, Minn., with the Rev. Gregory Leif officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Adams.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Adams Funeral Home, Adams, with a rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home Wednesday.

William was born July 6, 1912, in Adams Township, rural Mower County, the son of John and Catherine (Gerber) Smith. He attended St. John's School at Johnsburg, Minn.

He was married to Magdalena Goergen on Oct. 3, 1936, at Johnsburg, Minn. They farmed in the Adams area and he was a partner in WW Livestock, buying and selling.

In 1973 they moved into Adams and were the Grand Marshals of the 1977 Dairy Days. In August 1998 William was inducted into the Mower County Livestock Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and of Catholic Aid.

William enjoyed attending auction sales and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Maudie Smith, Adams; sons and daughters-in-law, Erland and Dorothy Smith, Adams, Albert and Shirley Smith, Rose Creek, Minn., Marvin and Lita Smith, Rose Creek, Minn., and Robert and Diane Smith, Adams; daughter and son-in-law, Johanna and Ralph Russell, Rochester, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Alvina Theobald, Richmond, Calif., and Marita and Wilmer Michels, Rose Creek, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Smith, Adams, Roy and Helen Smith, Rochester, and Vernon (Pat) and Marcella Smith, Adams; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul Goergen, Adams; Ralph and Kay Goergen, Adams, Clements and Margaret Goergen, Adams, Naida Goergen, Austin, Minn., and Beatrice Goergen, Adams; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

William was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph, and his grandson, Jason Smith.

SIENNA M. GISH

MASON CITY -Sienna M. Gish, 89, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before service time at the funeral home Tuesday.

MASON CITY - Gary Eppens, 60, of 109 S. Ohio Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at his home.

MASON CITY - Pauline M. Espinosa, 74, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

LEROY WILSON

MASON CITY - LeRoy Wilson, 58, of 1712 S. Virginia Ave., died Monday (Jan. 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N. E., with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon until time of services today at the funeral home.

LeRoy was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Charles City, the son of Jasper LeRoy and Linnie Mae (Gallup) Wilson. He was united in marriage to Connie Samson on July 24, 1967, in Council Bluffs. They lived in Mason City until moving to Chandler, Ariz., in 1973. They returned to Mason City in March of 1998. LeRoy had worked as a custodian at Mason City High School since returning to the area. He enjoyed watching sports and woodworking.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Connie, of Mason City; his daughter, Constance Hall, of Mesa, Ariz.; his son, Tim Wilson, stationed in Italy with the U.S. Navy; eight grandchildren, Michael, David, Brandy, Nicholas, Alicia, Katie, Nathan and Alyssa; one great-grandson, Alex; four brothers, Chuck Wilson and his wife, Betty, of Nora Springs, Larry Wilson and his wife, Norma, of Jerome, Idaho, Don Wilson and his wife, Mary, of Grain Valley, Mo., and Paul Wilson and his wife, Sharon, of Crescent; two sisters, Marilyn Ingersoll of Mason City and Janice Sheldon of Clear Lake; his father-in-law, Fred Samson, of Mason City; his mother-in-law, Audrey Hart and her husband, Charles, of Swaledale; his brother-in-law, , John Samson and his wife, Jean, of Monroe; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Schippers and her husband, Larry, of Pella, and Phyllis King and her husband, Tom, of Dows; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, William Hall.

HAZEL E. GRAPER

ROCKFORD - Hazel E. Graper, 84, of the Nora Springs Care Center, formerly of Rockford, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at the care center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church of Rockford with the Rev. John Albrecht officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and will continue for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church.

Hazel was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Madison, S.D., the daughter of Frank and Etta (Peck) Holt. She graduated from Clear Lake High School and La James College of Beauty. Hazel owned and operated Modernette Beauty Shop in Rockford before she was married.

She was married to Clarence W. Graper on Dec. 18, 1938, in Rockford.

Hazel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford where she was involved in various activities. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed writing poetry, having a book of poetry published.

Hazel enjoyed being with her family and surrounding them with her love.

She is survived by two daughters, Kareen Clifton and her husband, M.L. "Duke," of Missouri, Valley, and Julie Eisentrager and her husband, Gene, of Hampton; a son, Ronal Graper and his wife, Ruth, of Barksdale Air Force Base, La..; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Holt of Manly; and one sister, Frankie Bowcock and her husband, Lewis, of Mason City.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; and one brother, Lester.

HILMA VAN RIPER

LAKE MILLS - Funeral services for Hilma Van Riper will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will be in Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery , rural Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour before service time Friday at the church.

Hilma I. Van Riper, daughter of Ole and Annie (Ingebritson) Hermanson, was born Dec. 17, 1912, in rural Lake Mills. She was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills.

She was united in marriage to Raymond Van Riper on Dec. 27, 1930, in Mason City. She was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of the Lake Mills area. She was a member of the Altar Guild.

Hilma passed away Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Survivors include two daughter and their husbands, Joanne and Ronald Jurasek of Nora Springs and Verlaine and Delbert Spurgeon of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; three granddaughters, Pamela and Tom Wingfield of Boone, Lori Spurgeon of Lake Mills and Joan and Robert Prevete of Plainview, N.Y.; three great-grandsons, Jacob Wingfield and Joshua Wingfield, both of Boone, and Christopher Durand of Lake Mills; and Robert Paul Prevete, to be born in March; two sisters, Ruth Holtan of Forest City and Leila Kloster of Lake Mills; and two sisters-in-law, Olga Hermanson of Lake Mills and Edna Uker of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; a son, Ronald H., in infancy; a grandson, Daniel Spurgeon; two brothers, James Hermanson and Richard and his wife, Mavis Hermanson, and four sisters, Cora Killand, Ella Peterson, Evelyn Peterson and Alice Jordahl.

JOHN G. BROWN

MISSION, Texas - John G. Brown, 67, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at the Mission Hospital in Mission.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 209 Second St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Betty Brown, 1525 Riverbend Drive, Mission, Texas 78572.

John G. Brown was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Mason City, the son of John G. and Vera (Curtis) Brown. He attended Mason City High School and in 1949 enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Korean War, Vietnam War and was stationed in Japan. After 20 years of service he was discharged.

In 1978 he married Betty Schulte (Tanner) in Manly. In 1980, he moved to Topeka, Kans., and was employed at St. Francis Hospital as a security guard. Retiring in 1987 to become "winter Texans," the Browns moved to Mission fulltime in 1996. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 733 in Mason City and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Brown of Mission; two sons, Fred Brown and his wife, Bonnie, of Coralville, and Steve Brown and his wife, Terry, of Irvine, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Sommers and husband, Wayne, of Riverton, Utah; two stepdaughters, Pam Stockton and husband, Bill, of Louisville, Ky., and Lori Scott and husband, Jeff, of Victoria, Texas; one stepson, David Schulte and wife, Cheryl, of La Crescent, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; as well as a host of friends and neighbors. He will be sadly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, E. Warren Brown.

VIRGINIA M. WONG LIVERS

NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Virginia M. Wong Livers, 82, of North Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at the Woodbine Health Care Center in Missouri.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at McGilley Antioch Chapel, 3325 N.E. Vivion Road, Kansas City, Mo. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the chapel.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Northland Cathedral Missions in Kansas City, Mo.

Virginia Livers was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Mystic, Iowa. She lived in Mason City most of her life. She moved to North Kansas City, Mo., 15 years ago. She was a member of the Northland Cathedral.

Survivors include six sons, Jon Wong of LaJolla, Calif., Lee Wong of Kansas City, Mo., Vic Wong of Junction City, Kan., James Wong of Ames, Frank Livers of Mason City and Charles Livers of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Moy Sappenfield of Gladstone, Mo., and Marie Rose Wong of Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Mildred Wright of Horsham, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
